About the Artist
Known in parts of the Midwest as the Fishin Musician (he also ties his own flies), Joe Augustine's interest in flyfishing is second only to his love of playing piano. His musical ability went undiscovered until the age of 15, when he sat down at a piano in the music room of his high school and repeated what the student teacher there had just played. The teacher, realizing his aptitude for the instrument, encouraged him to take lessons.

This he did, studying for 2 years with Gene Rush, presently the director of the Jazz program at the University of Memphis. Gene greatly influenced Joes jazz playing and also directed him to classical instructor Dolores Fitzer, a former soloist at Carnegie Hall. Joe remained under Dolores tutelage throughout his college years at Youngstown State University. Although he earned his bachelors degree in business, Joe played 5-6 gigs a week while in college as well, never seeming to get enough time at the piano.

Upon graduation in 1971, Joe walked into the newly opened Avalon Resort in Warren, Ohio and has been playing there 6 nights a week ever since. Of his 25-year engagement Joe comments, Ive had to learn, play and understand all kinds of music. Painting that musical picture each night is a wonderful way to market new arrangements.

Joe has received professional acclaim over the years for his performances with local symphony orchestras and in 1987 The Ohio Arts Council selected him as an Ohio Artist On Tour. More recently, the Steinway Piano Company honored Joe by making him one of their designated Steinway Artists.

His economic yet expressive style allows any listener to feel involved in his music. The spirit of pleasing the listener is reflected in Joes recordings as well as his live performances. Constant practice in front of a live audience produces an artistic virtuosity that allows Joes arrangements to change and evolve through continual improvisation. His understanding of harmonic texture and musical color reveals an artist who is sensitive to the emotions evoked by a song and has a real desire to appeal to his audience. Featuring: Joe Augustine, Ronnie Zito, David Finck.

Product Description
Swing, that unmistakable period in American history when jazz and pop first created their alliance. "This music," says Joe, "culminates in movement and mood - a synergy of sound, energy, and creativity during a specific moment in time."

In collaboration with New York's finest musicians, Joe leads this trio through a recording session which captures the excitement, sensitivity, and spontaneity which is Joe Augustine.

    5 out of 5 stars What a breathtaking album!.......2005-12-04

It's a stunning album that you can't miss; Margaret Whiting sounds wonderful and her voice is extremely amazing. How an old lady can sings so well....just ask her!!!.

5 out of 5 stars Updated oldies, terrific new songs, and Gerry Mulligan........2004-07-05

What more could a Margaret Whiting fan want? Recording this album in 1990, when she was sixty-six years old, Whiting gives a contemporary new sound to some of her old standards, such as "Old Devil Moon," "It Might as Well Be Spring," and "That Old Black Magic." With Gerry Mulligan's baritone sax to compliment her lower register on several songs, especially on "Moonlight in Vermont," she experiments with new tempos and rhythms, and shows that while she may not have quite the range that she once did, that she is still a great song stylist who is still experimenting and having fun as a performer.

In "The Lies of Handsome Men" and "The Coffee Shoppe," much newer songs than her standards from the '40s and '50s, she really hits her stride, using her acting ability to speak directly to the audience through song, and making these two of the strongest songs on the album. Piano accompanist Lee Musicker keeps his arrangements simple and often jazzy, riffing in "That Old Black Magic" with an up-tempo beat, and providing syncopation for "It Might as Well Be Spring," giving a whole new sound to these familiar songs.

Whiting's voice is at its strongest in the middle and upper registers, in which she also seems to have noticeably more confidence. Arrangements which include a lot of half-tones and switches from major to minor and back, as in "What is a Man," "The Best Thing for You," and "Can't Teach My Old Heart New Tricks" are not as strong as those which take advantage of her ability to make a traditional ballad come alive. Though there's sometimes a little quaver and a certain fuzziness in her lower register, few Whiting fans are likely to mind--it's such a thrill to hear this great lady of song still going strong. Mary Whipple

5 out of 5 stars Classy Whiting delivers wonderous set.......1999-03-07

Margaret Whiting is the other girl singer, not Peggy Lee, or Roe Clooney, or Dinah Shore, or Helen O'Connell, but the other blonde. In this selection, with smooth stylings and top-notch back-up, Whiting delivers with a coolness and bravado that is simply no longer around. Her voice is full-throated and the songs pleasureable

These are the songs the country was singing and listening to during World War II. It is always interesting to know what music America was listening to during various stages in its history and this two CD set contains an excellent sample of the songs that were popular during this period. I wasn't familiar with all the songs, but I have heard of most of them. Prior to being aware of this music set, I introduced a number of these songs to 4th and 5th graders in a volunteer class and they enjoyed listening to them and singing along to the words. I bought a number of this CD set as a surprise gift for them and I know they will enjoy it when I send it to them. It showed me that kids will enjoy old music if they are introduced to it. You will enjoy these songs whether you remember them or not. This is the way it was. Listen!

A fabulous double CD of the music of the war years interspersed with news flashes of great historic importance. A wonderful trip down memory lane for those who remember these years and a great historic resource for those who do not. The selection of the music is outstanding!

5 out of 5 stars MY FIRST RECORDING OF THIS GREAT LADY.......2004-10-30

I love the fact that on this recording her voice sounds well travelled....it makes you get in touch with the songs and the singer even more. I have since listened to one of her earlier recordings and granted her voice is much smoother but this one really tells you that she has lived the songs she sings....

For those who love the real deal in jazz singers this lady sure was one of them.......

3 out of 5 stars Only for those who must have everything Ms. Syms recorded........2001-03-19

I first became awared of Sylvia Syms back in the late 1960's, and found her husky singing quite seductive. I have close to a dozen of her LP's, and quite a few of her CD's. This album was recorded toward the end of Ms. Syms' career; and, sad to say, the lustre of her earlier recordings is no longer apparent. Listening to her as she valiantly struggles from one song to the next is almost painful. As fond as I am of Sylvia Syms, I cannot honestly recommend this album to any but the most die-hard of her fans.
