Pianist Frank Kimbrough has distinguished himself strongly as a leading member of the Herbie Nichols Project, a vibrant horn-rich sextet that pays homage to the late pianist whose name they've taken. But here Kimbrough is stripped down, playing introspective tunes enriched by vibraphonist Joe Locke's floating commentary, resonant soloing, and note-for-note shadow puppetry. In truth, many of Kimbrough and Locke's ventures here sound like extended improvisations in the vein of Paul Bley's early 1960s trio with Jimmy Giuffre. But the playing on Saturn's Child is less cerebral and more emotionally complex, frequently echoing the Modern Jazz Quartet. The more one listens to Saturn's Child, it becomes clear that the duo is insistent on the sublime, playing with such rich harmonic sensibilities that the music can turn the listener's face flush. --Andrew Bartlett

One of my favorite recordings. Absolutely beautiful jazz duo playing. The timbres of the vibes and piano work so well together. And Locke and Kimbrough share such a deep musical connection---a remarkable combination of heartfelt lyricism, harmonic depth and virtuosity. Favorite track? "Saturn's Child" -- one of the most beatiful ballads I've heard in years, this one deserves to be a jazz standard. Locke's melody haunts you (in the best way) long after the disc has stopped spinning.
