"It's About Time!" marks the CD debut of Chicago piano great Willie Pickens. When the Pickens name is mentioned in Chicago, it resonates the world over. A master sound technician, composer and innovator, Pickens continues in a tradition of Chicago-based improvisors that started with Earl Hines and Lennie Tristano. Pickens has become the Chicago sound. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Pickens career includes his work as a Chicago Public School System educator, house pianist to the famed Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase, road artist with the invincable Elvin Jones, and pianist with the Ravina "Mentors", it is indeed time for this CD.

The original direct to digital tracks from 1997 have been remastered on this disc. Also included are 4 unreleased bonus tracks, 3 from a concert in 1981 at The Uptown Hull House on a vintage 1930's Steinway and the final surprize, a live date from the 1986 Chicago Jazz Festival, courtesy of Dick Wang, the archival administrator to the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

There is no "rest" in savoring the music of Mr. Pickens. His profound technique rivals any jazz or classical master, and it becomes pointless to try and describe his musical essence with words. You don't hear snatches of "other" cats, but you witness the blending machine called Willie Pickens, mixing melody with dissonance, jazz with latin, classical with the avant garde and emotion with technique. Buy it. Play it. And don't lend this CD to your friends.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.
