This highly acclaimed 1997 musical meeting between rising American trumpet star, Roy Hargrove, and a collection of Cuban musicians including Chucho Valdes, founder of Irakere, is indeed a fine piece of music making. Given the politics of our times, much was made of the rapprochement between Cuban and American musicians. However, if you approach it expecting to hear something like most contemporary Cuban dance or popular music, you may initially be disappointed. The Cuban influence is subtle rather than blatant; the dominant flavor comes from the jazz tradition. But let it work its magic on you over a few listens and the inner strengths of the two styles become entwined, the sophistication of the vision will transport you to some place where only music, and not politics, matter. These musicians work together like the fingers on your hand. --Jonathan E.

Even though he has lived in Sweden for four decades, Bebo Valdés's playing is so poignantly Cuban that you can practically smell the cigar tobacco. Some will remember Valdes as a standout on the soundtrack for Calle 54 or from his Blue Note album El Arte del Sabor from 2001. Here, on Recuerdos de Habana, a double-disc set first released as an import in 1999, he plays with the same fire as on the above two albums. The pianist often goes it alone or is joined by his young son Rickard on timbales, while occasionally they are joined by other percussionists or bass. Regardless of the setting, Valdés's playing sparkles as he rolls from bolero to mambo to guajira with the same ferocious yet romantic piano style that he taught his son Chucho. Along with 28 songs, fans also get a fascinating interview and music lesson in English with the pianist. As good a self-portrait as one could hope for, Recuerdos is required listening for Cuban jazz fans. --Tad Hendrickson

Amazon.com essential recording
His two decades of success as leader, main composer, and arranger of the supercharged Cuban jazz fusion group Irakere have often obscured the talents of Jesus "Chucho" Valdés as a pianist. Now Valdés seems ready, indeed eager, to take his playing center stage. Bele Bele en la Habana, recorded in Toronto early in 1998, features Valdés with a stripped-down quartet playing a program of originals and Cuban standards. It's an impressive show. With sure technique, Valdés seamlessly blends elements of jazz (postbop phrasing and rich harmonies reminiscent of Bill Evans), classical, and Afro-Cuban music. He offers high energy and lyricism ("Son Montuno"), an implacable groove ("Con Poco Coco," "La Sitiera," "But Not for Me"), and even a dash of melodrama now and then (the classic "Tres Lindas Cubanas"). Irakere might have lost their leader, but jazz has gained a superior pianist. --Fernando Gonzalez

In a word - awesome.......2002-07-01
I saw Chucho play live at Symphony Hall in Chicago about 3 years ago. Our seats were in the very last row, and the sound quality was just horrible...but I could hear enough to know that his group was really cooking. So I finally broke down and got "Bele Bele en La Habana", and wow, am I glad I did. Not only is the sound quality terrific (check out the bass drum kicks on La Sitiera), but the performances are just amazing. This is complex, incredible music, and has appeal that goes well beyond the confines of jazz and latin genres.
This is an amazing CD.......2002-05-09
If you like Eddie Palmieri, you must try this CD. It's more improvizational than Eddie's work but you will not be disappointed. Chucho is an amazingly talented artist and now this is my new favorite CD that I just can't stop listening to.
acquired taste.......2001-08-14
I first heard a track from Valdes' "Lucumi" album on a sampler CD and I bought "Bele Bele..." and "Briyumba Palo Congo" wanting to hear more. There's no doubt that Valdes is brilliant, but you have to enjoy lightning speed to enjoy these two recordings. Even at his most relaxed he pounds rather hard here. I'm still trying to get a copy of "Lucumi." On the track I heard there, "Adiva," Valdes seemed to combine classical with a touch of gospel--tender and thoughtful. I don't mean to downgrade his other recordings. I was just in the mood for something quieter.
Bele Bele en La Habana.......2001-08-08
If you like jazz and Latin music you will love this CD. Chucho combines the two to develop a wonderful sound.

not a group.......2003-10-09
This recording has some merit, but as a whole, it is not very cohesive. It is obvious that these are capable musicians, but it's also obvious that they had not spent any real time playing together before this recording session. It is loaded with weak spots both in time, and melodic thought. Lacking direction and common musical goals, it is pretty insipid, and leaves me feeling I've wasted my time with it. Throughout most of the tracks, the players resort to playing loudly what they are used to playing, and very little communication takes place. Sometimes it sounds like very little listening to each other is happening, or that maybe they were having a hard time hearing each other.
Good players.....Bad setting.....mediocre music.
dope jazz.......2002-12-22
Ive long been a fan of latin jazz, but this album is so good that it made me bored with my collection. The complex beats, the powerful soloing, the wide range of moods in the songs and the genereal arc of the album: all make 'Habana' utterly, utterly compelling. The best jazz recording ive heard in years.
'Habana' starts off slow, but by track 7 [mountaings] you pulse will be pounding.
its dope.
Latin Jazz at its finest.......2001-12-20
In modern times, it is rare to hear a Latin Jazz album of this quality. Roy Hargrove has taken his traditional jazz trumpet and flugelhorn chops and adapted them to work with Cuban rhythms. The mix is spectacular, and the artists chosen to work on the album couldn't be better. Everything was recorded in Cuba, with a majority Cuban group, and it shows in the quality of the music. This is a must-have album for any jazz enthusiast.
Bastante Bien.......2001-08-06
I happened to see Roy Hargrove perform live earlier this year and he blew me away, so I had high hopes for this record. (His set wasn't big on Latin flavor, but since I happen to be particularly suseceptible to Latin jazz, and since the set I saw was so wide-ranging and impressive, this seemed like a good place to start.) I'm not as impressed with Hargrove as recorded here with various Latin-flavored backing. About half the record is good (Afrodisia, Mambo for Roy, Mr. Bruce), but none of it is great, and some of it is quite weak, especially the numbers that prominently feature guitar. Oh well. There was enough here that I'll probably try another Hargrove recording, but this one didn't come close to matching his live power.

A STANDING OVATION FOR ROY HARGROVE'S CRISOL HABANA.IF YOU ENJOY GREAT TRUMPET & FLUGELHORN SOLOS WITH A AFRO-CUBAN SOUND THEN YOUR'RE SURE TO ENJOY HABANA.

I can't stop listening!.......2005-11-18
This is the soundtrack to a Cuban movie by the same name. The first half of the CD is the best music I have listened to in years! I have had it in my CD player for 6 months. The up-beat, danceable songs are catchy, and the ballads are sad, and easy to learn (in Spanish). The songs toward the end are mostly just filler, but the final song, a ballad sung by an amazing gravelly, older woman's voice, is also great.
I STRONGLY recommend this CD to anyone who likes salsa music, or any other type of spanish music! (Actually, I recommend it to everyone...you don't have to know Spanish to be able to enjoy this CD!)

Joyous rhythms, hopeful lyrics and sterling instrumentation give life and soul to Boomerang, the third disc from Cuban collective Habana Abierta. The eight members reside in Madrid, but the group's collective heart remains in its native Cuba. They address issues of identity, political unrest and isolation, but the music remains spirited throughout the set. Boomerang is an effortless, elegant and often electric ode to not only native sounds, but music in general. Songs flow naturally into each other, incorporating elements of rap and rock alongside bolero, jazz and flamenco. Each member takes his turn behing the mic, but it never feels disjointed or haphazard. The complexities--and ultimate beauty--of life is what ties all of Boomerang's stellar tracks together. Standouts are impossible to pick, ranging from the aching beauty of "La Novia de Superman" and "Corazon Boomerang" to the prickly tropical flair of "Bailala Bien." An easy pick for one of 2006's best releases--and a likely award contender in the coming months. --Joey Guerra
