Trumpeter Nicholas Payton's heartfelt tribute to the great Louis Armstrong, Dear Louis, might instead be better titled Dear New Orleans. That's because, despite the renditions of various Armstrong-related tunes that make up the disc's 13 tracks, this is more of an extended love letter to the cascade of musical styles that make up the city of Armstrong's (and Payton's) birth. Aside from swinging renditions of tunes such as Armstrong's "Potato Head Blues" and the bluesy "Tiger Rag" that one might expect from an Armstrong tribute, there's also a generous helping of rollicking Dr. John-style New Orleans shuffle, and Mac "Dr. John" Rebbenack himself makes that link plain by lending his signature vocal style to spirited versions of "Mack the Knife" and "Blues in the Night," where he's joined by Dianne Reeves. Any Louis Armstrong tribute, of course, has to feature some fireworks in the trumpet department, and Payton delivers some searing solos on "Tiger Rag," "Tight Like This," and elsewhere that do justice to King Louis while still charting their own path. For all the hoopla over Armstrong after Ken Burns's Jazz, Payton's Dear Louis is far from an attempt to cash in on rote renditions of Armstrong classics. It is instead an impressive outing that honors Satchmo's diversity and innovation by showcasing some of Payton's own. --Ezra Gale

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile contribution to musical history.......2006-06-29

The reviewers who complain of "naive" and "weak" orchestration should read the liner notes. The orchestrations are not Gottschalk's, mostly, but those of Richard Rosenberg, artistic director of the Hot Springs Music Festival. And while it may seem easy to blast Rosenberg, Gottschalk was no master of orchestration himself. I played in the Hot Springs Music Festival Orchestra this summer, including recording more Gottschalk (as well as Nazareth and Bares) for Naxos, and I promise that Gottschalk's treatment of Mehul's "Grande Chasse de Jeune Henri," which will soon be released on Naxos, will leave no doubt in your mind that Gottschalk was right to restrict most of his activity to the piano. (More proof that Gottschalk was indeed the the "Chopin of the Creoles")
At any rate, this series of recordings seems to me a worthwhile historical project. There is some really beautiful music on these discs, in addition to some music that really need never have been revived. In any case, the listener to this disc will find some enjoyment, little offense, and much food for thought about the development of American musical culture.

5 out of 5 stars Just plain fun.......2004-12-13

I'm not sure how other reviewers could have found this music weak and naive--too much Schönberg, maybe? Or maybe they were trying to delve its musical profundity, when in fact this music isn't profound and doesn't claim to be. It's just energetic, fun music from a composer who wasn't content to color within the Classical-era lines. If you can imagine "Creole Classical," in fact, that's a good description of this CD. Although the bulk of the album consists of rollicking showtunes (most of which feature the piano as the dominant instrument, since most of the songs are orchestral arrangements of piano pieces), there are some surprisingly tender, lyrical moments as well. The whole album is imbued with an intriguingly pre-Jazz flavor that combines with the classical structure to create some of the best moments in American music: catchy, energetic and always entertaining. For those moments when Beethoven (or Schönberg) is too much depth for one day, this CD is the perfect alternative... particularly at this price.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Fun Taste of America!.......2002-04-30

Every once in a while, I like to buy a CD of a composer I'm not familiar with (and with NAXOS's low prices, why not?). When I got home and listened to this one, once wasn't enough. I listened twice through. This CD is real fun!!

In his day, Gottschalk was called "the Chopin of Creoles." Most of his writing was for the piano and this CD is generally short piano pieces arranged for orchestra. The music mixes strong folk melodies and New Orleans Creole inspired syncopation with the European Classical tradition- the result being a distinctly american divertimenti.

The music as a whole is very motif oriented with a touch of variation and some interesting arrangement twists. While and orchestral CD, the piano gets a lot of attention, giving us some nice interplay between the two.

The only complaint I have is that the CD was recorded at a music festival where professional musicians are playing side by side with selected 'pre-professionals.' I'm not a snob and normally it wouldn't bother me, but Gottschalk's unusual syncopation tends to be unprofessionally slopppy at times. Fortunately, any mistakes are in the supporting insturments. No star shall be subtracted because NAXOS has done such a great job giving us a quality CD at a good price.

1 out of 5 stars Weak Music.......2002-04-24

Upon listening to this CD I understand why Gottschalk is noted mainly for his piano compositions. I found the whole CD weak musically and the orchestration naïve. It seems as if these pieces are piano works that want to be orchestral compositions when they grow up.

I have several other CDs by this conductor, not sure of his credentials, who seems on a mission to champion the music of the unknown composers. While I applaud his work in bring the music of composers of color to the public's attention I must say that there are many more notable Black and Hispanic composers who deserve to have their music played before we go dipping into this well of musical obscurity.

I think that this conductor needs to ask himself something that many musicologist ask before wasting time on second rate composer: why is a composer's music not known in the first place?

5 out of 5 stars light, fun music.......2000-07-29

this CD is one of the best in the "american classics" series i have heard. the playing is warm, playful and full of energy.

these delightful compositions for orchestra and piano seem almost timeless. again thanks to naxos for bringing this largely unknown composer's talent to a modern audience at a steal!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

5 out of 5 stars Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21

Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.

5 out of 5 stars A classic compilation.......2006-10-07

This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)

This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)

A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)

For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.

1 out of 5 stars A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01

Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.

The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.

This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.

This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Unique .......2004-10-19

I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Great set.......2001-10-16

I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.

I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!

I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.

Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Peaceful CD For These Very Troubled Times.......2002-01-03

This CD surprised me when I first listened to it. It is among the most beautiful and peaceful music I have ever listened to. The song, "Dear Father", written by Neil Diamond for the movie, Johnathan Livingston Seagull, is my absolute favorite on the entire CD. All songs on this CD are beautiful and it is a very good value for the money. It's nice to be surprised by a CD now and then. This album is very soothing and is wonderful when you need to unwind and want to relax. Great to listen to before bedtime or as you are dropping off to sleep. I recommend this CD for all considering the fact that we live in very troubled times since the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks on the USA.

4 out of 5 stars The Nature Of America: A Musical Impression.......2001-01-09

This is a very good sampler of contemporary American composers, weighted more towards those writing for the movie industry. The music is very relaxing, and is quite enjoyable to sit back and listen to. The tracks are generally quite recognizable. We purchased this initially as a gift for some French friends. But we enjoyed it so much, we ended up buying a copy for ourselves.

3 out of 5 stars A Soothing CD.......2000-10-23

I found this cd to be one of my favorites to pull of the shelf when I am doing meditation or just in need of relaxing. Track 8 is my favorite. The strings are just beautiful and the melody heart warming and soothing at the same time. As much as I love the cd, I must give 3 stars because of the lack of nature sounds accompanied by the music. If you want a cd filled with the sounds of nature this may not be the one for you, however, if you simply wish a good cd with relaxing music then I would highly recommend this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Hymns in the Anglican Tradition Beautifully Performed.......2007-01-24

This is one more example of hymns in the Anglican Tradition, sung by the always excellent choir of King's College, Cambridge. It is a splendid example of the sonorous sound of men and boys, accompanied by a classic English organ and, for the quieter hymns, the gentle sound of harp. All the familiar hymns and hymn tunes are here. You will not regret adding this CD to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring music.......2005-07-06

I always enjoy listening to this Cd and particularly because of the orchestra and mellifluous choir. I especially enjoy: A Mighty Fortress, Come Down, O Love Divine, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, and Thine Be The Glory. Some of the selections are soft such as "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears." Still, it is a fabulous selection and one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Great English Hymns.......2005-02-10

This was one of my Christmas gifts and I really looked forward to listening to it. I had just visited King's College, Cambridge back in August and really liked it--you should try to make it out there if possible.

Anyway, this CD was great to listen to. Some hymns are scored for orchestral accompaniment, choir and organ, while the majority of tracks are just for choir and organ.

Recorded in the King's College Chapel (the front cover has a great shot of the ceiling's trademark "fan" stone carving), the hymns are pure English sound--boys' treble voices along with men's changed voices singing with a pure, clean, straight tone. It's very sweet-sounding.

The hymns chosen are also great; "Be Thou My Vision," an Irish classic, appears along with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," and "Morning Has Broken" (later recorded by Cat Stevens).

The singing isn't especially elaborate--they're just simple hymns. They're orchestrated very well, however, and they sound great.

Religious people may prefer these recordings more in general--these are Christian hymns after all--but I think it's a great recording and is worth listening too, especially if you enjoy that English sound!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!.......2004-09-20

Having heard Kings College Choir twice, in the flesh, at Kings, this CD is a wonderful example of what you might hear. If you can't make it to Cambridge, buy this CD. It contains many of the old favorites and also some hymns that are not found on other English hymn CD's.

3 out of 5 stars English Choirs.......2002-12-18

Having visited many Cathedrals throughout the UK and listened to the enchanting voices of the boys choirs, I was disappointed with this particular rendering from Kings. Perhaps I am biased in that I enjoy the organ background or no background but the use of a full blown orchestra, in my opinion, tended to overwhelm and was totally unnecessary and somewhat grandoise choice on the part of Stephen Cleobury. Apart from that, much of the music was excellent. In comparison with other CD's from Kings, this was disappointing.

--Ezra Gale

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Louis in Name Only.......2007-01-21

Nicholas Payton's sluggish arrangements, not his occasionally interesting but over-elaborate playing, sinks this "tribute" to the great Louis Armstrong. Payton's arrangements, with their screechy brass, turn "Hello, Dolly," one of Louis's happiest songs, into a dirge. "Tight Like This," a flat tune in search of a melody, trips over an overlong drum solo. Fans of Satchmo's piercing horn, his bouncing Dixieland music, or his growling blues should stay clear of this blatant ripoff of his name.

Only "Blues in the Night," sung by Dr. John and Dianne Reeves, and "West End Blues," featuring a Payton trumpet solo, bow to Armstrong's style.

Though changing the name of this CD would lessen the crime against Armstrong, a new name would not save the music.

4 out of 5 stars Potato Head Hard Bop.......2006-07-13

Utilizing songs from New Orleans jazz tradition is always comendable activity, but is the idiom of hard-bop the right way to approach this material?
Payton is obviously a great musician. There are other excellent musicians on this CD, interesting arrangements, many innovative solos, etc., but still, when approached from Payton's hard-bop perspective, some of the material shows its weakness and hides its strength...

5 out of 5 stars Dear Louis - Nicholas Payton.......2002-07-30

This is one of the finest albums released yet by the incredible Nicholas Payton. Born and raised in New Orleans, this album features the infinitely talented trumpeter in his element, with a band full of tonal variety, dynamic quality, and a damn good lead trumpet player, playing re-interpretations of Louis Armstrong classics. If u like the trumpet, Louis Armstrong, or just the general concept of a swingin' Big Band, then this is for you. Nicholas Payton boasts a fine set of weapons: impressive range, a really fat sound, a solid concept of rhythm, and the flexibility to change his sound depending on the style of the music. Highly influenced by Clifford Brown and Louis Armstrong, Payton utilises everything he's got to really set the listeners ears on fire. Growl on!

5 out of 5 stars Grammy-nominated trumpeter, with mad skills.......2002-01-07

It should come as no suprise that Nicholas Payton's most recent CD, "Dear Louis," has garnered him yet another well-deserved Grammy nomination. The title track, "Dear Louis," plus "Tight Like This" and the Cuban classic, "Peanut Vendor," are by far three of the best tracks on this amazing CD. Not only does Payton demonstrate a flair for composing his own works, but he also does a masterful job of arranging a number of Louis Armstrong favorites. If Louis Armstrong were alive today, I'm convinced he, too, would hold this CD is the highest regard. So, make "Dear Louis" an essential addition to your jazz CD collection--it's a winner.

4 out of 5 stars Give it a Second Listen!.......2001-10-10

When I first heard this cd, I thought, this has nothing to do with Louis Armstrong! Of course, some of Mr. Armstrong's signature pieces are covered on this cd. A second, and third, listen, however, had me appreciating Mr. Payton's beautiful playing. He has really developed his own style, and yet, one can hear the sounds and feel of New Orleans jazz coming through on each piece. A beautiful and loving tribute to Satchmo, but in Payton's own voice. A worthy cd to own for serious jazz lovers.

    3 out of 5 stars A Cautionary Note.......2006-03-22

Prospective purchasers of this CD should be aware that the major work here, the Jeremiah Symphony, is not a modern recording but an ancient monaural one from 1945 with a youthful Bernstein conducting the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (with Nan Merriman as the passionately committed soloist). It sounds its age. The other works here are modern digital recordings from 1992.

    Album Description

Rebuilding the Lost Oz Before Judy Garland sang Over the Rainbow, Oz had inspired over 200 songs. This CD provides an overview of the rich early musical legacy of Oz. Most of the original music of Oz is associated with Baums stage works: The Wizard of Oz (1902), The Woggle-Bug (1905), and The Tik-Tok Man of Oz (1913). In the absence of published vocal scores, music was gathered in the form of published songs, piano or orchestral medley arrangements, and manuscripts. For the Wizard suite, I drew upon Tietjens own manuscript indications and a 1902 orchestral selection by Hilding Anderson, who would later orchestrate for Gershwin shows. The Tik-Tok Man selection is a 1913 orchestral arrangement by J. Bodewalt Lampe, who, like Gottschalk, was a pioneering film composer. From these scores, it was a matter of laying down the parts track by track; fortunately, advances in digital sampling synthesis have allowed me to record this music within a reasonable budget without sounding like Switched-on-Baum. The scores and parts are available for performance. The Cowardly Lions share of this collaboration was done before David and I met, through hours of on-line conversation. The audience for The Wizard of Oz in 1902 largely arrived in horse drawn carriages to see the first stage show in history with electrically controlled lighting. For this project to have been coordinated through the internet and realized digitally is a wonder worthy of Baums imagination.

    4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Restorations.......2006-06-04

James Doyle does a wonderful job restoring and re-creating these early scores which would otherwise be lost to time. You should also check out his recording "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz - Toronto Cast Recording", a completely new musical production which is extremely faithful to Baum's original book.

    5 out of 5 stars What?.......2000-07-20

Can someone PLEASE help me? I love the story of The Wizard of Oz. I'm sure this is a great CD, but does it have any words or is it just music. If some one can help me I would be vary thankful!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, historical, entertaining.......2000-01-01

The Hungry Tiger CD _Before the Rainbow_ is excellent and I recommend it highly. I might (or might not) have preferred "period instruments" to the synthesizer, but then it would have cost too much to produce and we'd be without anything. My roommate/landlady said the final grand march from Patchwork Girl sounded like "roller skating music." But that was intended as a compliment. No Oz fan can live without this recording.
