Album Description

Charles Frazier's novel and the film Cold Mountain opened the door to a world of Appalachian history, life, and music. Now, John Cohen and Smithsonian Folkways take you all the way home to the source and the spirit of Appalachia in the signature sounds of its musical elders. Descendents of the 19th-century Appalachian frontier families perform traditional music they inherited from their Civil War-era ancestors. 70 minutes, 36 page booklet, historic photos.

5 out of 5 stars dark magic.......2004-12-21

First, this is not the soundtrack to the Cold Mountain movie. That recording, released a year or so ago, featured talented modern musicians who recreated the 19th-Century music from the film and the Charles Frazier novel on which it was based. Back Roads to Cold Mountain covers much (and more) of the same material, except as it was done by authentic mountain musicians.

With one or two exceptions, these songs and tunes were alive during the Civil War. They survived into the early and mid-20th Century, to be rediscovered by folksong collectors. Most selections come from Folkways' deep archives, ably picked by John Cohen, whose recordings with the New Lost City Ramblers introduced many of us to the Appalachian tradition during the 1960s folk revival and after. Frazier himself, who provides the introduction to the enclosed booklet, explains how this music inspired his novel, set in Civil War-era North Carolina. Cohen's extensive liner notes and annotations are informative and engrossing.

Few of the musicians are likely to be familiar, though names like the Stanley Brothers, Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Roscoe Holcomb, and Tommy Jarrell will resonate with those who have at least passing knowledge of the tradition. The performances are always inspired, sometimes rawly emotional in a way that has vanished from today's music; sometimes a performance may be even a little frightening, for one dramatic example Oscar Parks's angry rant at the conclusion of the ballad "The Battle of Stone River." French Carpenter's fiddle tune "Camp Chase," on the other hand, aches with mournful beauty.

The sound quality, thanks to modern technology, is so perfectly executed that it serves to erase distance between listener and performer. Time and geography roll away, and you're right there on a back porch or a church bench, hearing the ballads, fiddle pieces, and hymns in person. There is a dark magic in this old music, and Back Roads evokes it brilliantly.

Album Description

Travel along the back roads of vintage country music with a stop off in the Louisiana bayous.

Backroads & Bayous combines Karen's two musical passions, early country music and traditional Cajun music. The two styles are close first cousins with a similar spirit. Karen performs regularly with two groups The Blue Moon Cowgirls and Squeeze Bayou. Both groups are featured on this recording along with friends Dede Wyland and Ric Sweeny.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Listening Fun.......2005-04-12

I stumbled across this album while browsing Amazon's free downloads. It's a great collection of cajun and old-time country style that I had to buy as soon as I heard the sample. The cajun tracks are a lot of fun and they have done a lot with some classic 'oldies'. It's great listening, but there is a lot more of Ira's guitar heard than Karen's fiddle. I hope that the next album includes a bit more of the fiddle. I agree with another reviewer - it's probably my favorite CD purchased this year.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Cd this year........2005-02-23

"Backroads & Bayous" by Karen Collins is my favorite CD this year. The selections are well chosen, with each tune bearing its own signature. The material is in keeping with the theme, as Cajun songs are comfortably tucked within the country songs. Each tune is distinct, with vocals ranging from powerful to haunting to sentimental to passionate. But there is a constant element: every note, every harmony, reveals definite purpose and fits just right. The music is mindful but uncontrived. Like
Karen's voice, the CD production is polished yet maintains its valuable
uniqueness and authenticity.

5 out of 5 stars "BACKROADS & BAYOUS" - GOOD STUFF.......2004-05-28

From the driving beat of the first song, "If You're Waiting On Me", to the Loretta Lynn standard, "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin'", with a side trip to the wonderful world of Louisiana style traditional Cajun music, this album is exactly as titled - "BACKROADS & BAYOUS". The Backroads country tracts aren't the glitzy commercialized so called country music that Nashville turns out, but a return to old time good singin', good harmony and just good pickin' thanks to Ira Gitlin's talented contributions. Karen displays her musical gifts singing lead and backup vocals and playing fiddle and rhythm guitar. Blue Moon Cowgirls (Ann Porcella & Dana Ward) add harmony as only they can and make traditional country songs like "Trademark" and "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin'" a truly new listening experience. And who else could turn out a country version of "Blue Moon" but Karen and Blue Moon Cowgirls. Dede Wyland and Ric Sweeny provide almost soulful vocals that blend to produce a very good old time country sound. The Bayous Cajun tracts are typical of Squeeze Bayou and their love for traditional Cajun music. As Karen says, the CD is a unique blend of her two musical passions, early country music and traditional Cajun music, and it shows. They blend together very nicely. I hope this first isn't the last.

4 out of 5 stars Back roads is frontline fusion.......2004-10-30

Tenor virtuoso Bob Berg teams up with (a.o) Dennis Chambers and Mike Stern to create an album with a combination of heavy fusion and jazz ballads. The album was a 1991 Grammy Nominee and in this case, that really was for a good reason. Bob Berg shows the duality which modern jazz saxophone players strive to achieve: being able to play funkfusion as well as jazz. Bob Berg does both exceptionally well.
The track "Nighthawks" is the masterpiece of this album. Dennis Chambers playing polyritmic 6/8 and 7/8 which make you feel like you are in dark Afrika. Bob Berg replys with staccato groovy melody.
All those who think fusion was at it's peak in the 70's with Weather Report and Miles Davis are shown wrong by the tenorgiant Berg.
Although the 70's brought many good compositions (Jaco Pastorius, Chick Corea), they sounded awfull on the records themselves. This was mainly caused by the use of primitive synthesizers. In contrast, Back Roads sounds almost too good. Typically of the 80's and early 90's, the record is overproduced:every sound on the record has an echo. Fortunately, the quality of the music itself is so high that this does not become irritating. With Back Roads modern fusion reaches it's epitomy. After this Bob Berg as well as Michael Brecker returned to the jazz standards.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Pat Donohue "Backroads".......2003-12-30

I Love this CD! After I saw him play live, I had to have this CD. Pat Donohue is a Master Acoustic Guitar player with poet's heart. The lyrics are deep and real, it's nice to hear someone sing from the heart. There is song on here called "I don't worry about the Blues" which is a beautiful song I dedicated to my wife. It's exactly what I want to say but just couldn't get out. Pat Donohue is one of those Masters that noone really hears much about, but is on higher level that many don't appriciate. I do, and I think you will too.

5 out of 5 stars Seventy-five dollars!?!!?.......2005-12-16

This is a great album, and it's too bad it was allowed to go out-of-print, but asking $75 as one seller does is mind-blowing. Reminds me of the controversy in 1993 when it was almost pulled off the market through a lawsuit because no one "official" knew who this guy "David G. Porter" was and that as far as they knew he has no authorization to do any work whatsoever on Ives's music. EMI had the spine to keep it on the market but it looks like someone decided it wasn't selling well enough to reprint. My advice is to find a friend's copy and burn a boot of it, and scan the booklet for my program notes in your favorite language. Truly a great CD but that's too much to ask.

4 out of 5 stars The Brass Band Marches on with Ives.......2005-05-28

The concept of transcriptions of music originally written for various instruments, orchestras, voices, piano etc goes back a long time. Ensembles comprised solely of winds, or brass, or strings gather various transcriptions (at times those of the composers who wrote the original score!) and make their repertoire more varied in adding such new insights. Such is the case with the Detroit Chamber Winds under the direction of H. Robert Reynolds and this very interesting CD is devoted to the music of Charles Ives.

Ives had great respect for brass ensembles and wrote music expressly for them. These are included as are a number of works for chamber orchestra etc. The collection is played beautifully and the recorded sound is excellent. With some reservations this 'Remembrance: A Charles Ives Collection' is not only successful but a fine addition to the Ives recordings.

Perhaps just returning from a performance of 'The Unanswered Question' performed by the LA Philharmonic with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting where the mystery and spirit of Emerson's poem "The Sphynx" which inspired Ives to write this brief 6-minute piece colors this listener's full appreciation of these transcriptions. Originally scored for strings, four flutes, and trumpet (in the wondrous Disney Hall acoustics Salonen stood alone on the stage conducting the off stage strings, the flutes in the organ loft and the trumpet in the highest balcony in a three way conversation that seemed to come both from within the bodies of the audience and the ether of the universe, this work fails to hold the importance of the solo brass instrument playing against a brass ensemble. A small quibble perhaps, but some of Ives' works were specifically designated for certain instruments and defy tampering.

In all a recording to add to the Ives Collection and one that is certainly well performed. Grady Harp, May 05

    5 out of 5 stars A great collection.......2003-05-12

A great collection of wind pieces by Charles Ives arranged, transcribed, edited, and realized in a number of fashions. The songs run the gamut of Ives's career and his many styles, the latter half of the disc dedicated to selections from his Brass Serenade.

Many of these pieces, most in fact, are difficult to find anywhere else, and are of enormous interest. One of Ives's earliest pieces, "Holiday Quickstep," for instance. There are also engaging interpretations of his more esoteric and mysterious works (The Unanswered Question, Ann Street), personal pieces written for piano and soprano (Remembrance, Evening, Mists), tone poems, and more lively, sometimes comic, sketches (Gyp the Blood or Hearst, Tarrant Moss). The performances, by the Detroit Chamber Winds, are energetic and gratifying. For most of the stuff on this disc, however, there is very little to compare it to.

This is an immensley charming collection of short pieces that any Ives fan is sure to value.

Wolf's debut recording (released in 1976 on her Owl Records imprint) was only a small indication what was to come. After all, who could have predicted the influence she would have on a generation of singer-songwriters? In retrospect, this first studio effort sounds a bit tentative; it's as if Wolf holds back for fear of giving too much too soon. She needn't have worried; she was a prolific songwriter and interpreter who never ran short of material. The sad opener "Lately" and the kick-up-your-heels joy "Sitting on the Porch" point toward the intimate, confessional lyrical tone she came to master. --Alexandra Russell

I can't think of anyone who seemed to understand and was able to convey the feeling of the West better than Kate. This CD says it all. I first met her when I was living in Mariposa CA. in the 'golden rolling hills' she sang about. Some of her songs seem a little dated now but most of the songs on this album will strike a cord with country folk who love the land and life they lead.

      4 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Voice--Highly Recommended.......2000-02-20

I'm listening to this cd as I write this. Kate Wolf had an incredible voice. She had so many good songs with lyrics that really hit home, it is hard to say which is a favorite. I'd give this 4 1/2 stars. It is pretty mellow with the exception of a few bluegrassy sounding tunes. You simply have to hear Kate sing once and you're hooked. Highly Recommended
