One of the most revved-up discs any label has tossed into the late-'90s swingsploitation boom, Swing It, Daddy-O succeeds by making plain the link between jump blues and early rock & roll, which is what most of these 18 cuts essentially are. Some of the songs--Louis Jordan's "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie," Louis Prima's "5 Months, 2 Weeks, 2 Days"--will be familiar to casual fans, but most of them are cult faves that help make this an illuminating listen in addition to a hugely entertaining one. --Rickey Wright

Some great R&B here, and a few surprises.......2000-09-14
Did you know that Little Richard recorded with a big band before he made his rock'n'roll hits? It was news to me! "Little Richard Boogie" from '53, with Johnny Otis's band, is one of the pleasant surprises in this rhythm-and-blues collection. Other highlights include Big Joe Turner's seldom-revived "Boogie Woogie Country Girl," a terrific rocker from '56; "Voodoo Voodoo," a Lavern Baker side that was ahelved for three years before release; the outrageously chauvinistic "It Don't Happen No More," Young Jessie's diatribe against aggressive women; the original version of "Hey Bartender" by Floyd Dixon; and "Rib Joint," a blues instrumental by Sam Price's "Bluesicians." A few of the selections don't quite fit the program: Tarheel Slim, Big Maybelle, Joe Liggins, and Ruth Brown give good performances but their songs are overshadowed by the rhythm numbers. Concentrate on the jumpin' jive in this one. Considering that many artists recorded for small labels, it must have been a challenge to dig up these rare tracks, and the producers can take a bow for this enjoyable CD.
