The Brandenburg Concertos seem to be Bach's most popular works by far, and there are so many recordings of them out there--on period instruments and "modern," and at all price ranges. Of course, it's hard to pick out one or even two to call the "best"--but this reissue of a 1989 recording by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment has a good claim for the title of "Best Buy Brandenburgs." These performances don't have the splashy extroversion of Il Giardino Armonico or the caffeine-pumped, high-velocity thrill of Musica Antiqua Köln, but they're not overly reserved or dull, as some English ensembles are accused of being. The OAE's instrumental playing is very skillful indeed, with particularly nice work from the horns in the third movement of the First Concerto, and from trumpeter Mark Bennett in the Second; and the tempos are moderately quick (which means that they would have been considered rather fast before 1980 or so), but without being breathless. The slow movements sing sweetly--the viola playing of Monica Huggett and Pavlo Besnosiuk in the slow movement of the Sixth Concerto is especially lovely--and the quick outer movements have an infectiously bouncy pulse. If money is no object, you might want to consider Il Giardino Armonico or the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, but these here are surely the best Brandenburgs available at such a low price. --Matthew Westphal
Customer Reviews:
One of the best recordings of Branderburg concertos.......2006-03-06
I own quite a few recordings of the Branderburg concertos (Suzuki, Saval, Boston Baroque...) this one is one of the best.
There is an evident feel of musical joy coming out of this recording. I can't find other ways to describe it.
The musicians are enthusiastic about the work they are playing, restrained most of the time but when it is called for they give their best.
Highly recommended.
my copy was ok.......2006-02-09
This is an excellent version of the Brandenbergs. The tempos are good and the instruments are all clearly heard. I noticed that some sort of production problem led to some poor reviews with the 2 CDs having the same music for some people. I did NOT have that problem and think this set can be highly recommended.
Could be great........2006-01-02
I got a gift certificate for Borders and I decided to get this as I have been wanting it despite reports of the same music being on both discs. I brought it out to the van and immediately played both CDs and they both were the exact same music. I return the disc at Borders before we left the parking lot. What little we played sounded so right. Brilliant energy and refinement. Excellent sound quality. If I knew I could get one that was manufactured correctly I would purchase it in a heart beat.
Very Dissapointing.
Production Error.......2005-12-08
I would like to confirm the problem reported by Mr. Whittet. I purchased the disks in November 2005 and found the same mistake that he did. Disk 1 has the same music as Disk 2.
In other ways this is a spectacular recording. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment gives a graceful and articulate reading of the concertos, and the recorded sound is clear, warm, and spacious. But, despite the bargain price, it's not worth it just to get two copies of concertos 4-6.
Try before you buy.......2005-11-23
Watch out for a manufacturing error with this 2CD set. I found that the exact same music (Concertos 4-6) was recorded on each CD in the set (they are labelled CD1 and CD2 but both contain the music for CD2). I returned it, obtained a replacement, and the replacement has the exact same problem, so it is not an isolated event. I believe these performances would be excellent if I could only get to hear them all.

A Creative Programming Idea Gone Awry.......2003-10-01
The notion behind the program on this CD was a wonderful one. As a pendant to a new song cycle by Warren M. Swenson set to Civil War poems by Walt Whitmen, George Shirley, tenor, and William Bolcom, pianist, record eleven popular songs from the period surrounding the Civil War including familiar favorites as 'Oh, Dem Golden Slippers,' 'My Old Kentucky Home,' and some rare songs like the Creole folk song 'Michieu Banjo' and Henry Russell's 'The Maniac.' But there are two things wrong with the final product. First, the song cycle of twelve songs, although set to stirring, evocative poetry, is pedestrian and in a pale faux-Ives style. Second, and sad to hear, is the deterioration of the nearly 70-year-old Shirley's once glorious voice. He was, in his day, an intelligent singer with a beautiful voice that he could use to do just about anything he wished. I remember a riveting 'Salome' Herod only ten years or so ago. He still sings with immaculate musicianship and intelligence and his accompanist, the redoubtable composer/pianist William Bolcom gives him formidable support, but the voice splays and wobbles under pressure and it becomes painful to listen to it.
The booklet notes and recorded sound are exemplary.
But my advice is to avoid this issue unless you really want to hear Swenson's songs; this is likely to be their only recording.

Finally receiving the reissue it deserves........2005-08-08
Marion Brown's "Quartet" album, his debut recording as a leader for ESP-Disk, is finally getting its sonic due. Now, if only it would get its critical due.
One of the more unrecognized musicians in the New Thing movement, Brown is probably best remembered for blowing alto on Coltrane's "Ascension". But his output in the '60s for ESP and Impulse! are of consistent high quality and deserving of wider recognition.
"Quartet" (although this issue titles it "Marion Brown") opens with a piece that is rather uncharacteristic of the New Thing movement, the breezy, laid back, and calypso-ish "Capricorn Moon". Performed by a quintet of Brown on alto, Alan Shorter (brother of Wayne and an unrecognized giant in his own right) on trumpet, Ronnie Boykins (on Sun Ra's band) and Reggie Johnson on basses, and Rashied Ali on drums, the piece is wistful and fluid-- extended solos by Brown, Shorter and Ali are all nothing short of astounding and lyrical-- particularly Ali at the drum kit.
The remainder of the album is of a more tense mood, but the pieces are probably more indebted to Ornette Coleman than anything else, with a nice sense of lyricism and space, whether its the tense quartet piece of "27 Cooper Square" (performed by Brown, Shorter, Johnson and Ali) or the stuttered them of "Exhibition" (performed by Brown, Bennie Maupin on tenor, a bassist I can't readily identify and Ali). This reissue is augmented by "Mephistopheles'. composed by Alan Shorter and performed by Brown, Shorter, Boykins and Ali as a quartet. This performance actually quite exceeds the rest of the album-- the theme utilizes tension in the theme, stating the theme in harmony and then breaking for sustains before turning over to schizophrenic solos by Brown and Shorter, both of whom shine brightly.
Certainly critical is getting this reissue of the album-- featuring the great sound prevelent in all the ESP-Disk reissues, the added track (and at nearly 19 minutes, its a lot of music), and a new essay about Brown and the album by Clifford Allen, its really quite a nice package. Highly recommended.

Product Description
Will Marion Cook was one of the earliest African-American composers to achieve significant commercial success in musical theater. However, even though his talents were admired at the turn of the twentieth century, he and his work have since been largely forgotten. With the interest in African-American culture sparked by the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, and revived interest in all American music during the Bicentennial celebrations of the 1970s, Cook has been rediscovered by such music historians as Thomas L. Riis and Marva Griffin Carter, as well as by such performers as the Black Music Repertory Ensemble of the Center for Black Music Research and, of course, tenor William Brown, who had previously recorded some of Cooks songs on the album Fi-yer! (TROY329). Having studied with Joseph Joachim in Berlin and Antonin Dvorak in New York City, Cook was respected for his pioneering achievements in popular songwriting, Black musical comedies and syncopated orchestral music. His career as a songwriter spanned some forty years from 1893 to 1934. Cooks memoirs reveal that he believed his ultimate challenge was to right social injustice while at the same time creating beautiful music. Renowned tenor William Browns repertoire encompassed practically all musical genres. He was a particularly avid performer of American music from all ages and had appeared with major orchestras and ensembles all over the world. Sadly, Mr. Brown died shortly after this recording was made, so we feel that this CD is a tribute to the memories of both Cook and Brown.

Shear pleasure from beginning to end.......2007-01-30
Will Marion Cook (1869-1944) was one of the first African American composers to achieve significant commercial success in musical theater. To borrow a term from the visual arts, this collection provides a long-awaited major retrospective of his work, presenting many songs recorded for the first time.
With twenty-six tracks on two CDs, SWING ALONG presents a range of genres, including lullabies, parlor songs, ethnic "coon" songs and exquisite art songs. There are two songs from "In Dahomey," the first full-length musical written and performed by blacks to be presented at a major Broadway venue (1903.) Cook's collaborators include icons of African American letters such as Paul Laurence Dunbar and James Weldon Johnson, but the lyrics sometimes caught me by surprise, such as the lovely parlor song "Returned" with its plantation nostalgia. It reminded me that even icons have to make a living, which was no easy feat for a black artist at the turn of the century.
Melodically and stylistically, the music reflects the time (one hears influences of jazz, ragtime and the blues) while simultaneously looking ahead, employing striking harmonies later explored by George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and others. Tenor William Brown magically alters his voice and intonation to suit each genre....you won't get much closer to time travel than this!
The excellent liner notes are written in a narrative style, with songs grouped and discussed in context rather than in the order of appearance on the CD. I found it helpful to program my CD player so I could listen while reading along the first time. But for sheer enjoyment, just let the songs flow. There's a reason this music was so popular in its day, and the CD is a pleasure from beginning to end.

Customer Reviews:
Best Brown.......2001-03-12
After two excellent albums for the avant-garde jazz label ESP, and an appearance on John Coltrane's "Ascension," Marion Brown was added to the New Jazz roster on Impulse. Dedicated to his friend, colleague and labelmate, tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp, "Three For Shepp" boasts three stirring Brown originals and three passionately played Shepp covers. The personnel on this December 1, 1966 session is Grachan Moncur on trombone and Sirone on bass for all six songs, Stanley Cowell on piano and Beaver Harris on drums for the Shepp tunes, and Dave Burrell on piano and Bobby Capp (who was nice enough to log-on and give his two cents above) on drums for the Brown originals. Anyone who likes Impulse's avant-garde titles, particularly those by Shepp, will thoroughly enjoy what I believe is Marion Brown's best recording.
A good album.......2000-10-26
This is a solid and good free-jazz album. Not a masterpiece like the albums the man he's paying tribute to did but definitely worth listening to. The music is closer to the "ESP"-free jazz sound (brown recorded for that label) than the Sanders/shepp/coltrane approaches.
