Editorial Reviews
Paul Donnelly, ejazznews.com, May 28, 2004
...bears the influence of Grant Green along with various schools of rock guitar without a trace of incongruity.
Product Description
Classic Rock Meets Free Jazz on guitarist Rick Peckham's debut, "Left End."
On Left End, his debut as a leader, Boston-based guitarist/composer Rick Peckham seamlessly marries rock tones and twisted intent with sophisticated jazz harmonies and freewheeling improvisational daring. Backed by the remarkable rhythm tandem of drummer Jim Black and bassist Tony Scherr, Peckham distinguishes himself as a gutsy, accomplished player whose mind is wide open to sonic possibilities.
"When I first started playing jazz...I don't know how I got the idea...but it really seemed like part of playing jazz was that you had to hate rock," says Peckham. "And so I sort of bought into that for a while. I got a new guitar and put strings on it that were too heavy to bend and just tried to get into Wes Montgomery and Grant Green, which I did. And I still love those guys, especially Grant Green. But when it finally came time for me to make a record, I didn't want to jump into something that would be just another jazz record, I wanted to get into the difficult work of integrating Paul Kossoff (guitarist in Free) and all the great classic rock guys that I always loved."
Echoes of rock guitarists of the '70s and '80s are heard all through the album. "Left End" takes its name and sound from a Cleveland Led Zeppelin-influenced band Peckham liked as a teenager. "Mr. Medium" is "my take on Mr. Big' by Paul Kossoff,' Peckham says. "Shakey" is an homage to Neil Young. "I just love those huge sounds that he gets on his solo records," Peckham says, "that Crazy Horse sound." "Gibbons" is named for ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons.
But the music on Left End refuses to fall into any one neat category. "Free 1" and "Free 2" are completely improvised pieces that explore textures and tone colors more commonly heard in jazz. The odd meter of "353-1001" and the African-flavored beat of "Real Time" add rhythmic variety to the rock rhythms heard elsewhere on the album. The quirky, medium tempo "Hawthorn" previously appeared on the long out-to-print debut CD by new jazz quintet Human Feel, which also featured drummer Black. The trio even takes on a certified jazz classic, Thelonious Monk's "Evidence."

Customer Reviews:
Enormously Disappointing.......2004-10-01
As a big Bernstein fan, I was looking forward to this comp. But I couldn't even make it through one listen. I found it insipid, saccharine. The main idea behind this comp seems to be to stuff every recognizable theme Bernstein ever wrote into one set while cutting out all other sections including any variations or development. They've cut the meat out of the music and left only the fat. The playing is stiff, the tempos are rushed, the arrangements are terrible. Don't waste your time.
Fantastic!!!.......2002-06-07
Fabulous recording. Puts you right in the saddle with the Duke, The Magnificent Seven or Charlton Heston's sandals! Power, scope, range, variety and total magnificence - this has it all. By far the best movie sound-track recording of all!
Sit Up and Listen.......2001-06-28
You pop this CD in to your player and the glorios Magnificent Seven theme knocks you off your feet. I'd forgotten how good it was, an icon of testerone flowing unchecked. Then there is the touching innocent To Kill a Mockingbird theme. Starting with a simple music box theme, the music builds to a dramatic climax, as if all the emotion suddenly exploded. The Great Escape track is, I think, one of the very best march compositions of all time. With the tuba providing the baseline with its own melody, then the light brass, perky and upbeat, providing the second melody, this theme instantly evokes both the fatigue and robotic obedience required of prisoners and the brassy indomitable spirit characteristic of the RAF flyers. If you listen carefully you hear the deeper brass (French Horns) take up the theme and give it a more somber character, as yet another melody is sustained in the background. The Ten Commandments stands alone as a wonderful heroic piece. Buy the CD for any one track and you will be pleasantly surprised by the remainder.
The Best Bernstein Sampler Yet!.......2000-05-21
Varese Sarabande has cheery picked from some of the finest (and most famous) film scores ever composed (and some of the best performances thereof yet recorded) in the second half of the last century. There are samples from sixteen film scores by Mr. Bernstein presented here (and since this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg for this prolific, spectacularly-talented composer, let's hope there will be many more Bernstein compositions to come!). It's beyond great to have all 16 film scores represented on one CD, even though most/all of these tracks are available off other CDs (CD-burner freaks, you've been left at the gate, or, rather, the CD-R/W drive on this one!). It does get a bit confusing trying to figure out all the source material (there's Bernstein right off the film sound track, Bernstein conducting the Utah Symphony Orchestra, Bernstein conducting the Royal Scottish Orchestra, Mr. Joel McNeely conducting the Royal Scottish Orchestra, McNeely conducting Seattle Symphony orchestra, Mr. Cliff Eidelman conducting the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, and so it goes). But quit making your brain ache; just spin up this CD and let your ears do their thing. And what a wonderful thing those ears will do. Mr. Bernstein, a master of tonality (like Erich Wolfgang Korngold before him), is probably best enjoyed in spurts or in selective film-score "cues"--mainly his opening/closing credit cues, since his scores tend to sag and become less dramatic in between. This CD focuses on the composer's strengths: mostly those opening/closing credit cues you can't help hearing in your mind over and over again. Although the performances are (as previously noted) from many sources, I can't find fault with a single one. The same goes with the recording/mastering/re-mastering. All first rate. One question remains: why are you still reading this write up when you could be buying the CD to empower your ears!

LEFT END DEBUT , GROUP WITH AN ATTITUDE.......2006-11-10
I have waited a decade for this vinyl LP to appear on CD format, finally a company out there has the moxy to release it. This was a Cleveland band from Youngstown, Ohio. They were the bomb on the club circuit in the early 70's. This album, "SPOILED ROTTEN" was released in 1974, by Polydor Records. They played with an attitude, their singer Dennis T. Menass was hysterical, he sang with a growl, prowled the stage, had makeup with a black eye painted on--- he reminded me of
Alice Cooper. They were confident on stage, they knew they were going to make it big, Polydor blew it, this band was lost in the shuffle when their label was reorganizing. Left End got very little publicity and promotion. Who else would put out a song called "THE PIMPLE SONG, or something like that, roll out a giant pimple on stage and pop it. They were all about shocking an audience.
The highlites on this CD are LOSER, BAD TALKIN' LADY, the title song SPOILED ROTTEN, TAKE IT IN STRIDE, WHISKEY & RYE, and TAKIN' TIME. These were classics by Left End in their live sets. I saw them along with my friends at the House of Bud, and Cyrus Erie. My two younger brothers also loved this album when I played it at home. Straight ahead, power rock n roll, the closest comparison I can think of would be Alice Cooper & Motley Crue (with less glossy studio production). No keyboards, just two guitarists, bass and a drummer making a statement- with singer Dennis T. Menass at the controls.
The Songs on this CD:
1. LOSER
2. BAD TALKIN' LADY
3. SPOILED ROTTEN
4. TAKE IT IN STRIDE
5. SWEET LOVIN'
6. EVERY LITTLE THING
7. MARY JO
8. TAKIN' TIME
9. WHISKEY & RYE
10. IT'S OVER
These were the original tracks-- there may be bonus tracks too.

fantastic.......2007-04-14
I don't review many items but seeing that no one has reviewed Rick Peckham Trio's "Left End" is a travisty. This is a great guitarist's guitarists album (CD). I had never heard of Rick Peckham but I'm sure glad I read a review and got this disc. I hope he puts out more stuff or comes to the Bay Area. This disc is playfully improvised jazz played with a hard rock edge. Simple and complex at the same time. The guitar has a nice nasty rock sound and the bass and drums hold down one hellova beat. I expect no less from Jim Black and Tony Scherr. Great work - give me more!
