On alto saxophonist Greg Osby's Invisible Hand, he embarks on a sonic excursion past the boundaries of time signatures, chord progressions, and prefigured tempos toward a universe of pure music--all the while joined by icons such as guitarist Jim Hall and pianist Andrew Hill. Bassist Scott Colley, saxophonist-flutist Gary Thomas and drummer Teri Lyne Carrington round out the band, demonstrating and helping define how solid Osby's own musical conception is. Osby shows the dual influence of Steve Coleman's M-BASE collective--where he made his creative home during the 1980s and '90s--and of Eric Dolphy, who worked with pianist Hill in the '60s. Hill's pointillism illuminates his enigmatic composition "Ashes," and his duets with Osby on both takes of "The Watcher" ring with a Debussy-like impressionism. Hall's hushed tones provide the right harmonic settings on "Sanctus" and the Latin-tinged "Who Needs Forever." Osby's sharp and flowing lines paint new algorithmic versions of Fats Waller's classic "Jitterbug Waltz" (a Dolphy favorite) and the standards "Indiana" and "Nature Boy." On those tracks Osby and company play the past and sound like the future. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
From Jazziz
Alto saxophonist Greg Osby's recent string of records for Blue Note - Art Forum, Further Ado, Zero, and Banned in New York - have got critics and fans championing him as traditional jazz's most envelope-pushing soloist and conceptualist. His new record, The Invisible Hand, finds Osby teaming up with two musicians who received similar praise back in the early 1960s, pianist Andrew Hill and guitarist Jim Hall. Osby has worked with both musicians in the past, recording on Hill's Eternal Spirit (Blue Note) and on Hall's By Arrangement (Telarc), among others. Several tunes, including "Sanctus," were written by Hall. "Jim wanted a Johnny Hodges-like interpretation," Osby says of "Sanctus," "but I couldn't go that far because I'm not into bending and scooping my notes like that. That's highly stylized and personalized. I think it would be patronizing for me to do it. I just tried to do justice to the song because it's so beautiful, a through-composed and arranged composition with a definite theme and development and motives. He wrote the melody based on the way he thinks I play - which flatters me. It's custom-made and I hope I satisfied him with my interpretation."

The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

caution advised.......2004-12-06
I would recommend the prospective buyer to investigate carefully this cd: some songs are familiar, like ahbez' nature boy or waller's jitterbug waltz. But this is not a standards cd: the songs are basis for some experiment. I personally like it, but understand that it might catch some by surprise. As I write this, there are used versions avaible for less than $5, which means some people bought it and are now really trying to get rid of it. I'm keeping my copy.
The atmosphere is very mellow throughout the cd. It is very spare, with very relaxed tempo. I think it is the slowest version I own of the jitterbug waltz mention below (out of 3). Hall and Hill are great players, who would take first credit over Osby in any jazz antology, but here are relatively subdued. Nature Boy is very haunting, almost hypnotic. Most of the other songs were composed for the session. This cd grows on you after several time listening to it, but it takes some effort to get into it.
Another Grand Slam for Mr. Osby!.......2001-08-22
As usual this c.d. was a masterful work. Fun and yet thought provocing while driving. A good c.d. to unwind to after a long day! Howard University consistantly turned out fabulous, entriguing musicians when I attended in the late seventies and early eighties. These guys are still funking and grooving, reminding us that sometimes...a little older "is" better! Great going Greg!
Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny.......2001-07-10
"Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny" observed Frank Zappa in the 1970s, but it took until the early 2000s and albums like this one for the observation to really apply. Osby and Co. coast through a thoroughly unengaging program, not really trying very hard. We are supposed to fall all over them with delight because they simply showed up. It seems that they are trying for cerebral detachment, but to me, they just are not cutting it at a minimally acceptable level for this style of music. This is not adventurous music--give me a break--hundreds of albums in this style which are much more exciting and risk taking are filling the bins of the jazz section in any good music store. Osby needs to get up off his posterior and really play with some passion and dedication, and stop shucking the listening public.
Osby: The Inspirer.......2000-12-05
Greg Osby is making a habit of releasing music that is both diverse in it's scope and always intellectually challenging. His work with pianist Jason Moran, vibe sensation Stefon Harris, and tenor saxophonist Mark Shim has proven Osby's ability to inspire the best out of his younger band members. "The Invisible Hand" is a tribute to all alto players and the different moods that the instrument evokes. It's both subtle and a ton of bricks at the same time. Although Osby has been around a long time, and in a plethera of different jazz genre's, I think he's found his niche' with a traditional, straight ahead jazz styling. At least for this album that is...
Heavyweight band, delicate music.......2000-09-24
The most eyecatching thing about _The Invisible Hand_ isn't the leader but the sidemen: the alto saxophonist Osby has put the great 1960s hardbop/avantgarde pianist Andrew Hill together with the classic mainstream jazz guitarist Jim Hall (though Hall has been notably open to experiment, as any of his own albums from the last few decades will attest). The rest of the band is Gary Thomas on flute & tenor; Scott Colley on bass; & Terri Lyne Carrington on drums. The feel of the album is cool yet intense; only "Indiana" is taken at a fast clip, & the album's prevailing tonality is that of the blues even when the tunes themselves (such as Andrew Hill's fine "Ashes" or Hall's "Sanctus") are structures of great sophistication. The album is perhaps slightly too self-conscious in its presentation (it is self-produced): the instrumentation is varied with every track, & the focus is, despite the stellar cast, very much on Osby (Thomas, for instance, gets exactly one full solo on the whole album plus a few flute obbligatos; Osby on some tracks overdubs countermelodies to himself)--yet he sustains that focus admirably, his solos admirably logical & yet highly expressive. The inclusion of two takes of the duet with Andrew Hill is particularly valuable--not a repeated idea in sight.
This is an album that takes a while to sink in, but contains more substance than many more immediately impressive discs. Osby in the liner notes is a bit laborious in his dues-paying, as seems to have become de rigeur post-Wynton; but this doesn't affect the music, which is packed with quiet intelligence. Nice to hear an album that's understated but makes me sit up to pay attention instead of fall asleep.

Let them be heard.......2004-09-23
Attrition is one of those groups that has to be heard to be understood. To try and describe them by labeling them dark or 'goth' or industrial darkwave or one of those 'gothic' bands just doesn't do them justice. Many would categorize industrial and gothic as a world of music that all sounds the same. Well sounding the same is what bad groups do. Attrition has a distinctly original sound that is unique to them. They don't sound like Funker Vogt. They don't sound like Lords of Acid. They don't sound like Ministry. Wait a minute, aren't all these groups classified in the same category? You see my point? Attrition doesn't even sound like Leather Strip despite both bands having an evident love of classical music.
So give them a listen. Their music has a strange passion that can be dark, uplifting, and danceable all at the same time. The remixes on this album represent various artist's take on the group and all have their own unique approach as well.
a MUST for any fan of attrition!.......2000-06-12
face it- we've all spent money on remix albums and been terribly disappointed with the quality and consistency of the mixes. "the hand that feeds," is NOT one of those disappointments. this is a wonderful album, with each remix building on the original. recommendations are morbus kitahara's mix of "white men talk" and chris & cosey's take on "i am (eternity)". very good stuff.
