Product Description
Enclave, the first collaboration between Boston-based saxophonist Hilary Noble and pianist Rebecca Cline, is one of the most exciting new discoveries in contemporary Latin jazz. Their dynamic, fiercely virtuosic quartet combines rhythms from Cuba, Brazil, Argentina and North America with bop, jazz-rock fusion and free jazz in eight originals and a Cole Porter standard. Hilary Noble and Rebecca Cline have solid foundations in the jazz and Afro-Latin traditions: Noble studied saxophone with Yusef Lateef and percussion with Maximino Duquesne, while Cline studied piano with Joanne Brackeen and Chucho Valdés. They have also played with some of the torchbearers of Latin jazz, including Giovanni Hidalgo, Bobby Sanabria, and John Santos. Bassist Fernando Huergo and drummer Steve Langone have performed with Luciana Souza, Danilo Perez, Jerry Bergonzi, Dave Samuels, Dave Kikoski, Paulo Braga and many more!

Unsung Sondheim.......2007-05-20
What a collection of unsung Sondheim tunes. At times I wondered why these songs had been dropped from shows. Well sung by the various artists.
Valuable only if you don't have any of these songs elsewhere.......2006-10-07
In the early 90's this was a fascinating CD, as it gave listeners a chance to hear many of Sondheim's "lost treasures" which might otherwise be gone forever. (The man does not do "trunk songs" which can be dropped into other shows.) Time, however, has not been kind to this collection. The first four tracks from "Saturday Night" have some bouncy charm (I never realized before how naughty the lyrics for "Love's a Bond" are), but with the glorious complete cast album released a few years ago with David Campbell in the lead, they've now been rendered redundant. (And "In The Movies," though boasting endearing vocals, suffers with all of its context and intercutting songs gone.) "What Can You Lose" can't measure up to Madonna and Mandy Patinkin's sensitive performance on her "I'm Breathless" album (and that would hardly qualify as "unsung"). "That Old Piano Roll" is fun but slight, and "Truly Content" mines the same lyrical phrase over and over till the fun wanes, despite Judy Kaye's winning vocals. "Water Under the Bridge" is one of the weakest songs Sondeheim's probably ever done, and deserves obscurity. Other, better songs here with often exquisite renditions are nonetheless available on other discs, and thus again hardly qualify as "unsung": "I Believe In You," a sweet and lovely song, is on Bernadette Peters' second "Sondheim Etc." CD (though Rebecca Luker's warm, enchanting rendition here is nothing to sneeze at), Mandy Patinkin frantically covered "Multitudes of Amys" on "Experiment," Madeline Kahn and Peters jousted with "There's Always a Woman" on the "Anyone Can Whistle" cast album from the mid-90's (props to Kaye Ballard's biting performance here though), Streisand covered "Goodbye for Now" on "The Movie Album" (and gave it a poignancy and depth it probably doesn't really deserve for such a drab little song). What's left? A cheerful, seemingly menage-a-trois ditty called "The Two of You" (which, bizarrely, was apparently written for "Kukla, Fran and Ollie"). A just plain wonderful "No, Mary Anne," which combines an impassioned performance, hard-bitten realism and sweeping romanticism into something quintessentially Sondheim. (The liner notes indicate that Sondheim expected this to be a parody of a big hit song, "like 'Hello Dolly!'" Those who know anything about Sondheim--and the yawning chasm between his style and Jerry Herman's--may find their heads exploding at that one.) Two endless instrumental pieces from "The Enclave" and "Invitation to a March" (tracks #6 and #12) that are mostly remarkable for how uninteresting they are. The liner notes are outstanding and offer lots of intriguing perspective (listening to "Multitudes of Amys," and you just might wish that "Company" had ended as it was orginally intended to). If you don't have CDs by Peters, Madonna, Streisand, et all, this is a great introduction; otherwise, bump it way down the priority list.

I once knew a pair that used to fit very tight............2007-02-23
In what can only be called a Pop/Grunge masterpiece this album was truly ahead of its time and anyone interested in the evolution of music through the mid-1990's should have this in their library.
Twice voted as the Greatest Canadian Album of All-Time by Chart Magazine in 1996 and 2005, beating out Neil Young's Harvest and Joni Mitchell's Blue, this album blows me away every time I hear it, even 13 years on. Sloan was signed to Geffen after their fuzzy and chrunchy debut Smeared. After hearing this album, Geffen refused to promote its release in 1994, due to its departure from their previous sound as well as the grunge tastes of the day. This resulted in Sloan ultimately being dropped from Geffen.
However, this was obviously short-sighted, given the eventual prominence of this record in the Canadian rock pantheon.
Sloan is indeed a talented group, featuring four multi-instrumentalist-songwriter-singers and this record marks their turn towards blending pop harmonies and melodies with grunge guitars and rock beats. This sound continues to be heard in their music today, 6 or 7 albums later.
The first five tracks of this record, might be the strongest run of songs on any album in the 1990s, let alone in Sloan's career, pulling you into this brave leap of experimentation.
This was a new sound, that clearly the world wasn't ready for. This album is timeless, its just a shame no one knew it in 1994.
a little Radiohead & a little Weezer..........2005-01-07
This is a 1994 release from a very smart band from Canada. They just toured with Jet and got some rave reviews. They are hard to describe. Overall they are too upbeat to be compared to Radiohead but too melancholy to be compared to Weezer but I could hear a little of both of those bands here. I could also hear some Kinks, Pretenders, Nirvana and Neil Young. Other people seem to want to compare them to The Beatles or The Beach Boys but I don't hear that at all. But they are a pretty talented band and all four members take turns singing lead on various songs...and sometime the bassist plays lead and the guitarist play bass. Interesting concept that you don't see very often. Overall not a bad CD. They probably play stadiums in the Great White North.
I'll Never Get Tired Of It.......2004-05-12
This album has so many fantastic songs. The band members each wrote and sung lead vocals on different songs, which gives the CD a varied feel. It ranges from upbeat and poppy but oh-so-awesome to slower or rockier. It's all bright and enjoyable music, with intriguing lyrics and classic "ba ba ba ba da ba's".
Highlights include:
"Penpals"
"I Hate My Generation"
"People Of The Sky"
"Coax Me"
"Shame Shame"
"Worried Now"
There aren't any songs you'll want to skip. The entire thing is more than worthwhile. This is tied with NAVY BLUES as my favourite Sloan CD.
Power Pop? Power ROCK!.......2003-07-31
This is a top ten MUST have records of the 1990's if you are ANY kind of rock fan. Many people categorize Sloan as pop music but I think perhaps authentic rock 'n' roll might be more fitting.
Everything on this album is unapologetically catchy and singable. The lyrics are clever, biting, funny and touching. Sweet, vunerable yet reflective and revealing. Get ready to feel irreverant and lovelorn. Hear the snowsuit sound and know this album is deeper than it's beauty.
If you like the hip, oasis, blur, the smiths, beach boys, beatles you will love Sloan and this record will blow your proverbial socks off.
Deep beauty.......2002-04-21
In 'Deeper than Beauty' -- an energetic pop masterpiece that doesn't suffer at all from an absence of bass guitar -- the final refrain contains the lines, "We're like the rest of them with our thumbs up our .../ If you call I will come, but I'm about as thick as molasses / When I dream of you you're not wearing your glasses". If this kind of cheeky, smirky, but oh-so-pertinent lyrical style isn't your cup of tea, maybe Sloan is not for you.
If Sloan is for you, then you probably like pop songs written from the point of view of East-Indian thirteen-year-olds whose English is kind of clunky ('Penpals'). Or melancholic songs -- with both chugga-chugga and jangly rhythm guitaring -- where the narrator at one point "saw his widow speak on her fortunes", and then later "saw her widow's peak on her forehead" ('Coax Me'; this song also contains the line: "It's not the band I hate, it's their fans"... sometimes I feel like I can quote Sloan lyrics all day long). Or sweet paeans to our innocent days on the school playground ('Snowsuit Sound'). Or an album stacked top to bottom with great pop songs written by four great pop songwriters with very distinctive pop songwriting styles. You probably like adventurous melodies that aren't afraid to be backed up by harmonious "La-la-la's". And punky/jazzy drumming. And bouncy, melodic bass playing.
For my money, this is pure Sloan. Which means its about as good as it gets when it comes to alterna-pop music.
