Jazz mandolin is not a new idea. Tiny Moore was playing jazz licks on the short, eight-string instrument in Bob Wills' Texas Playboys back in the '40s; David Grisman and such disciples as Mike Marshall, Andy Statman and Paul Glasse have been swinging and improvising on the mandolin since the '70s. More recently, Jamie Marshall formed the Jazz Mandolin Project as a vehicle for his own approach to the instrument. On the debut album, "The Jazz Mandolin Project," the mostly acoustic trio often seems to be following in Grisman's footsteps, but at times the group veers off into a more abstract mode that has less to do with the swing and blues of jazz and more with the abstract improvisation of jam-rock. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Jamming Jazz mandolin style!.......2003-03-12

In the same relm as Bela Fleck and the Flecktones did
jazz with a banjo, so does this band do it with a mandolin.
Jamie Mansfield, is a great mandolinist.....
"The country open" is a terrific jazz song.
The rest of this album is also phenomenal.
I recommend this to any jazz fan!

5 out of 5 stars This is real jazz - real jamming - the REAL DEAL!.......2001-05-25

Although sometimes it seems as if Jamie Masefield is the "star" of JMP (I may very well be way off base on that, however) this is the real deal. Funky, classy, and intelligent. Stacey Starkweather is probably one of the best under-known bassists around, and Gabe Jarrett is one of the most amazing drummers I have ever had the pleasure of jamming with.

5 out of 5 stars innovative and mind-blowing.......1999-09-04

This band is one of the coolest new jazz bands around. Expert compostion, interesting improv. As technical musicians, all three (particularly Masefield) are at the top of their field

5 out of 5 stars If you like instrumental jazz rock n' roll . . ........1999-08-13

Then you'll absolutely love The Jazz Mandolin Project. It's hard to believe this band consists of just three members. The first song, The Opera, will get you hooked instantly. If you're a rock n' roll fan sick of what's out there now, give these guys a shot. These guys are obviously all jazz influenced musicians, but in their blood was rock n' roll just itching to get out.

5 out of 5 stars Best new music I have heard in a long time!.......1998-11-18

A very tight trio, featuring mandolin, electric and upright bass and drums, takes the mandolin to new musical territory. This ain't no bluegrass! From ballads, rocking jams and tributes to musical masters, JMP will amaze your ears. The opening tune, "The Country Open", gave me shivers the first time I heard it, and still does. "The Opera" starts slowly and builds to a sweeping climax. This disc has not been out of my CD changer since I got it and is a must have for serious music fans. Look for JMP on tour, the live shows with the new bass player (Chris Dalghren, check out his CD "Slow Commotion") and drummer (Scott Nueman) are spectacular. Jamie Masefield and company expand the range of the mandolin in the same way Bela Fleck has changed the way we hear the banjo.
