Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Burn Season, the highly anticipated third album from the Travis Larson Band, delivers the trio's trademark blend of searing performances, stellar production, and some of the best compositions the genre has to offer.

The album opener Nevele, is an epic combination of progressive agility and crushing rock, while the title track Burn Season, a study in controlled, smoldering intensity. Grammy-Award winning guitarist Steve Lukather (Toto, Los Lobotomys) mixes it up with Larson on a stirring cover of People Get Ready, a track that blends the electric energy of the live Jeff Beck version with the evocative feel of the famous Rod Stewart treatment. Renowned percussionist and vocalist Vinx (Sting, Herbie Hancock) displays his unique genius on Seclusion (With You), TLB's first ever vocal offering.

Burn Season represents yet another step up for the Travis Larson Band in terms of sonic quality and stylistic range. There are huge, arrogant rock riffs (Axe To Grind, No Fate, Edges); moody, densely orchestrated ballads (Enough Said, Strawberry Spring); rich acoustic textures and loose, jazzy solos (Heads Or Tales); and grand celebrations of power and technique (Barrage a Trois, Dirty Magic). Album art by the legendary Hugh Syme (Rush, Aerosmith) completes the package. No fan of instrumental guitar should be without this album.

3 out of 5 stars Slightly impressive, but there's better out there.......2006-11-10

Burn Season isn't really a metal band, nor are they nu-metal, but somehow, both of those genres seem to come to mind when listening to Burn Season. Opening with Revolution, you swear you're going to get 12 songs of pure metal and screaming, but just 3 minutes later, you're thrown off with the slightly more mainstream rock song Carry On. Burn Season walk the line carefully between radio ready singing and ill nino-esque screaming, but never once cross over into either territory. For now, these guys have put together record that merits at least one listen. Don't be surprised, though, if you find yourself skipping tracks. There's something here for everyone, but for the listener looking for a complete cd, you may want to look elsewhere.

Bands like Allele and Revelation Theory have put together better records in the underground rock world, and I'd highly advise giving both of those bands a listen before purchasing Burn Season.

3 out of 5 stars good, but I've heard it all before........................2006-08-07

Im starting to get sick and tired of every band stealing idea's from each other....I dont know, it just seems like there isn't any originality left in the music scene at all. Does anyone remember Flaw? Burn Season sure does.......and they were this bands influence on their sleeves. Dont get me wrong, Burn Season do what they do well, it just isnt that original. Then again, what is these days?

Burn Season provides entertainment equal to most to of the top groups in rock. Give them a try, you'll love them. Then pass the word around so your friends will buy too.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Debut.......2006-03-18

I'm always looking for great new alternative rock artists... But usually I only find 1 or 2 every year that seem to actually stand out from the crowd. I'm happy to report that this year Burn Season definitley grabbed my attention. At first I only liked a select few songs, but a couple listens later I realised there isn't one bad song on here. Something thats hard to do in this day and age.

As you can see the album starts and ends very strong - but 2nd half of the album suffers slightly from the "songs begin to sound the same" demon that haunts a lot of freshman releases. But then again, its their debut and humble beginnings so all can be forgiven. If these guys get better with their sophmore album then it would honestly be about the perfect rock CD.

No need for a long review..if you love any form of newer rock you'll like this. Best Song = Wasted.

5 out of 5 stars Instrumental Rock at It's Best.......2006-09-27

The other reviewers all say it well. If you like soaring melodies, intelligent composition and stellar musicianship, look no further! I first ran into TLB when they opened for a Steve Morse Band/Dixie Dregs show a couple of years back. I thought they were good then but I was anticipating the start of the main show too much to really attend to what they were doing. I got my second chance a few months later when they played at a tiny bar in their hometown San Luis Obispo. I was so impressed that I bought this CD at the show. Now I own their complete catalog, including their well-produced DVD. Be sure to check out their newest CD, "Rate of Change" as well. They just released it a few days ago and Amazon isn't carrying it yet. Hopefully that will soon be remedied.

5 out of 5 stars INSTRUMENTAL GUITAR TRIO.......2005-10-08

I happened upon these guys in a tiny local venue and was blown away by them. Wow. It was a religious experience. First of all they're musically accomplished--especially bass player, Jennifer Young. Secondly, they play wonderful melodic material, whether it's their raw power-trio stuff or their ballads. Tasty. Clever. Continually surprising and interesting.

I bought all three of their CDs on the spot. However, in the back of my mind, I was wondering if this was going to turn out to be some kind of regret-it-the-next-morning infatuation--maybe just seeing musicians this good so close up had skewed my judgment--or love. Had I just been having one of those artistic pores-open days when no matter what I heard would have sounded great? Nope, after two weeks of listening to their CDs, I'm convinced it's true love. Their music is the real deal.

My take on them from having sifted through the material on their website is that the Travis Larson Band is a small, Do It Yourself type operation, one that's been proudly laying its hype-free product out there for several years but so far without finding the greater audience it deserves. Who can say why? I like avocados and grapefruit juice and sushi and lobster. Many don't and who can explain taste. Maybe they need more promotion.

Anyway, I'm a big guitar fan. Jorma Kaukonen, Al DiMeola, Joe Satriani, Steve Morse, Eric Johnson, Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, George Benson. I'm now a big fan of Travis Larson.

This is TLB's most recent album. Check it out, my fellow guitar lovers. It's a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh and Tasty!.......2005-08-26

Wow! I happenned upon TLB via an internet ad for a local musician who named them as an influence. I visited the web site, and after a couple of samples decided I needed to hear this whole record and immediately ordred it. Not only is Larson a wizard, but the other band members are incredibly impressive themselves. It isn't just that the musicianship is so stellar, but it is also the progressive song writing and arrangements that enthralls the listener. The only song I could do without is the one with vocals. No vocals needed here. The music is always fresh and exciting. I will definitely check out more of their recordings. And, luckily, I live in NorCal (TLB is out of San Luis Obispo), so I can go check out this hard-working band(they tour agressively - see website) next time they come through town.

5 out of 5 stars The gift that keeps on giving.......2005-08-03

I cannot think of another CD I have purchased that both grabbed me immediately and continues to grow on me. Usually, if something grabs me right away, it becomes stale after 20 or 30 hearings. TLB's Burn Season continues to impress me more and more after nearly 100 plays. Every time I listen, this CD continues to surprise.

As others mention, this CD has a richer, more layered sound partly from the use of keyboards but I think also simply from the compositional depth. For me, it is slightly reminiscent of the best Yes music (not exactly in sound but in character). The blending of sounds, lines, rhythms, and chords creates something much greater than the sum of the parts.

While Burn Season contains some of my all-time favorite songs (Heads or Tails, Nevele, and Burn Season to name only three), I have to admit it contains two songs that don't quite seem to go with the others. Interestingly, those two songs -- People Get Ready and Seclusion With You -- are the collaborative efforts on this CD. I have nothing critical to say about the contributions from Lukather or Vinx, respectively; both are extremely well recorded and I especially like Vinx's voice. However, these two songs fail to deliver the same level of richness, depth, and life that almost all of TLB's catalog has in great abundance. With all that said, even these two songs are thoroughly enjoyable.

This is a delightful CD and even with the two somewhat out-of-place songs, I would be hard pressed to not include it in a 10-CD desert island collection.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Morse fans will enjoy this.......2005-04-08

If, like me, you cannot get enough of Steve Morse, this artist is the next best thing. It's a shame this guy isn't get more attention. I 'found' him by accident, previewed some songs and that was it - I bought all three albums. Money well spent.
