I was looking for the old version of this CD which is no longer available when I found this new version. I bought it and it is wonderful. Great selection of songs, very entertaining. If you love Andrew Lloyd Webber music you will not be dissapointed.

This Broadway Collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber tunes is the best I've found. It contains a wide selection of songs from many of Webber's most popular and beloved theatre productions. As an added bonus (compared with other collections I've come across), the songs are performed by the artists we associate with them. For example, "Memory" from "Cats" is sung by the incomparable Betty Buckley. Another fine example is "Phantom of the Opera" dueted by Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. Barbra Streisand even makes an appearance with "As If We Never Said Goodbye." This is a fantastic collection with something for everyone!

Some GREAT TUNES, plus some real JUNK! .......2005-05-05

Thankfully, this has the definitive version of Sarah B. singing DONT CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA, surely among the finest recordings of all time! Truly Inspirational! On the junk side, the first song SUPERSTAR must be among the trashiest ever recorded! In between, mostly reasonably good, with a nice sample from about every Webber musical! History will show that the Lloyd Webber songs surely do not rank among the all time great musical tunes, but the introduction of SARAH BRIGHTMAN more than makes up for this very uneven song catalogue.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Amazing CD.......2001-08-09

This cd combines some of the prettiest songs on Broadway (Don't Cry for Me Argentina; Music of the Night) with some of the best chorus songs on Broadway (Big Spender, Mame) with some of the funniest songs on Broadway (Sue Me). With additional songs like the Impossible Dream and the one and only Broadway anthem (There's no business like show business), whats not to love about this cd. I highly recommend it.

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

I recomend this cd to all theater fans. Even the ones who love a great, toe tapping score. The song they sing in titled Applause can be seen in the Bonus Performances on the DVD titled Broadways Lost Treasueres. That is how I first heard of Applause. It was very entertaining!

Love the CD ( I have had the vinyl recording ever since it came out), but wish it could be released on Video or DVD(does anyone out there know if this will ever happen?). I saw the television production with Lauren Bacall and Larry Hagman back in the early 1970's and saw an amateur production of it here in Melbourne as well and having always loved the whole concept of the movie, I feel that it transferred well to the stage.

First... a request to people reviewing stage cast albums, Several reviews refer to these recordings as "soundtracks."

WRONG!!!!

"Soundtrack" recordings are records/cds transfered from from movies ONLY.

Live theatre does not use pre-recorded "soundtracks" - the casts perform live on stage and these "original cast recordings" are made in recording studios and designed for home listening.
PLEASE.... maintain your credibility by using the correct term!

Finally, after years of negotiation Decca Broadway is making the 1970 Tony winning musical APPLAUSE avaialble on Cd. Was it worth the wait? Well, yes and no. APPLAUSE is one of those late 60's musicals adapted from a hit play/novel/movie and offering lots of glitz and energy to cover up the deficiencies of the show itself.

Star Lauren Bacall provided the "star" quality though she has no real singing voice but as an actress she rises above it bringing the character to vivid life. Len Cariou sings well as Bacall's boyfriend but has very little to do.

Bacall gets the key gems and with two major exceptions any of the numbers in which she does not appear can be ignored. The first exception is the lively title song - a tribute to the power of applause. It has almost nothing to do with the plot but still stopped the show nightly. The other,is a dramatic soliloque for Penny Fuller in the (virtually) non-singing role of Eve: "One Hallowe'en." This is Eve's big moment to really show her true colours and Fuller makes the most of it. Missing from the recording - becasue it is a dialogue scene - is the following moments when Eve recieves humiliating comeuppance.

The original Lp release was done by ABC records and had an annoying "boxy" sound quality that has not been corrected on the cd. The very short selection has been filled out with demo recordings by composer Charles Strouse and a couple of the cut songs sound quite interesting. Packaging is up to Decca Broadway's usual high standards.

i have a copy of this recording on LP, and have enjoyed it for approx 25 yrs. couldn't wait for the cd. bought it the first time i saw it.
i am wondering if anyone has seen the tv production of APPLAUSE starring LAUREN broadcast circa 1974 on tv? and is there any possibility of obtaining a copy on anything? the production was FANTISTIC, to say the least!!!

This is not quite the quality I thought it would be........2007-06-22

I have to admit, I'm not a huge RENT fan, but still some of the singing isn't the professional standard that I expected it to be. Perhaps the performers are as bored of this musical as I have become- and I feel that really transmits through the recording. Let me just say that RENT is a show to be seen not heard on a recording.

Having said all that, it is worth the investment, and does have most, if not all of my favourite songs. RENT perhaps has become a little overdone to me but I guess many of you out there may still appreciate this recording.

Some important pieces missing.......2006-12-31

The first thing that struck me is that Benny's big number (You'll See) is missing, leaving Taye Diggs represented by only a few spoken lines. "Tango: Maureen" (though it was not one of my favorites to begin with) is also shorter than I remember from the movie.

But the most glaring omissions to me are "Over the Moon" and "Your Eyes"--after all, for Maureen and for Roger respectively, those compositions are the culminations of their artistic lives! And don't get me wrong, I love Stevie Wonder, but his remix of "Seasons of Love" added nothing for me to the beauty and grandeur of that pivotal song.

I am glad to have this, because I loved the movie and wanted the comparison--but maybe I should have waited til I had the money for the 2 CD set of the original Broadway cast...

MY DREAM COME TRUE!!!!!.......2007-03-04

I swear, as soon as I saw this on Amazon, I was like screaming with joy, because i had been searching for such a set of music for such a long time, and if you are a Busby Berkeley fan, this is for you! All of those wonderful tunes to the early Warner musicals we love so much, as well as some rarer tracks, but all the big hits are here, 42nd Street, Shanghai Lil, Dames, Shadow Waltz...but suprisingly no Sittin' on a Backyard Fence, Pettin' the Park, I'm Going Shopping With You, and Ah, the Moon is here, which I would've liked to be on it. But this CD set is great. Lots of the people I meet think i'm strange for loving old musicals and 1920s and 30s stuff (even my hair cut is exactly like Louise Brooks's) because i'm a teenager, but I LOVE this kind of music and thanks to the clear sound and excellent vocals and all, everybody can just relax and dream of old Hollywood while listening to this set.

Busby and the Kings of Melody.......2002-12-22

Dick Powell sings in Dames, 'Who writes the words and music for all the girlie shows? No one cares, and no one knows.' Fortunately with this wonderful soundtrack set we'll always know. For me these Warner Bros movies exist for the Busby Berkeley sequences and the gorgeous melodies.

The twenty tracks, from ten movies, have something for everyone, my favorites are, By a Waterfall from 'Footlight Parade' (1933) Spin a Little Web of Dreams from 'Fashions of 1934' and Dames from the 1934 movie of the same name. The lovely melodies by Harry Warren and Sammy Fain just stay with you. These two had to solve some interesting problems with the dance sequences as they lasted for some minutes but the arrangements were quite short, solved by repeating the theme over and over but with subtly changing orchestration. The melody of By a Waterfall is repeated twelve times during the water sequence but you don't notice while watching it.

An interesting track is We're in the money from 'Gold Diggers of 1933' where Ginger Rogers sings the song and then sings it again in Pig Latin, this was a novelty language of the Thirties. For the curious, this involves taking the first letter of a word and placing it at the end and then adding the letters AY. Confused? Yes, so am I but you can find out more by putting the term into any search engine.

As this is soundtrack material, recorded in the Thirties, I found the quality surprisingly good and the forty-four page booklet with the CDs is full of information. If you want to know more try and find a copy of 'The Busby Berkeley Book' by Tony Thomas and Jim Terry, published in 1973, the complete story in words and (lots of) pictures.

*2006 UPDATE* Fans of Busby can get an excellent Warners DVD box set of five movies, each with loads of extras and a stunning bonus disc of 163 minutes featuring twenty-one musical numbers from nine movies. Unfortunately I don't think the bonus DVD is sold seperately though it might be available from some Market Place Sellers.

Classic Hollywood musicals!.......2002-11-12

If you haven't seen the musicals these recordings come from, the songs may seem a bit thin, or overlong. But if you have an appreciation of the lavish nuttiness of Berkeley's best work, then these tunes may conjure delightful images of Dick Powell and all them leggy dames, and the crazy kaleidoscopic dance routines that made these films so fab. This 2-CD set includes material from "42nd Street," "Gold Diggers of 1933," "Footlight Parade," "Wonder Bar," "Fashions of 1934," "Dames," "Gold Diggers of 1935," "In Caliente," "Gold Diggers of 1937," and "Hollywood Hotel." Harry Warren's scores are often frivolous and dingbatty, which is part of what made them so much fun in conjunction with the spectacles on screen. They also work fine on their own, at least to a certain degree. For fans, this collection is a must.

A wonderful souvenir.......2002-08-02

There has never been anything quite like the delicious musicals that Warner Bros. served up during the 1930s. To begin with, they served to take folks' minds off the Great Depression, and in themselves they are wonderful works of art. They are still loads of fun, and this two-disc set serves as a fitting reminder of the heights that the American movie musical once achieved.

The focal point of the pieces on here is that most of them originally received elaborate stagings by that master of dance direction, Busby Berkeley. Within the context of the films, most of them were intended as stage pieces, although there was no stage on earth capable of presenting these pieces. And the stagings are more than just emptyheaded presentations on which the melodies can hang: we are confronted with the suffering of war veterans in "Remember My Forgotten Man," violence in "42nd Street" and sudden death in "Lullaby of Broadway."

Without the visuals, however, the one who really emerges as the star of these selections is Harry Warren, who wrote all but 4 of the 20 songs here. Warren consistently wrote songs as appealing as those of George Gershwin but, unlike Gershwin, his name is pretty much forgotten nowadays. Thanks to the attractiveness of the tunes themselves and the inventiveness of the orchestrations, the brief melodies are as fresh on their twentieth repetition as they are on their first.

Among the many vocalists, the most constant is baby-faced Dick Powell who achieved stardom through these vehicles. But there are many other enjoyable singers on these discs as well. James Cagney is effective as only he could be in "Shanghai Lil," and Clarence Nordstrum brings a pleasant baritone and a quick vibrato to "Shuffle Off to Buffalo." On the other hand, Ruby Keeler's charms lie more in what she attempts than what she actually achieves (one of the other characters in 42nd Street tells Warner Baxter straight out that she is not a very good singer). Likewise, Joan Blondell is not a very accomplished vocalist although she is very effective, for example, in the spoken section of "Remember My Forgotten Man." But this is not to denigrate the participation of these wonderful performers; in large part, they make the films in which they appear. And the distaff side is well represented by the enjoyable singing of Ginger Rogers, Wini Shaw and Etta Moten.

The presentation of these discs is near impeccable. I still find myself wishing, as I do with Fantasia, that they could update the sound, but the ear adjusts quickly and the discs are still much more than listenable.

We have here for the first time anywhere Ginger Rogers' outtake of "I've Got to Sing a Torch Song" from Gold Diggers of 1933 (the song is alluded to in the opening moments of that film). We also get to hear Benny Goodman sing in a part of "Hooray for Hollywood" from Hollywood Hotel that was left on the cutting room floor. On the minus side, the producers chose to omit a bit of "Remember My Forgotten Man" because of the distortion in that section caused by the action onscreen. The cut is well disguised but still noticeable to those familiar with the piece, plus it detracts from the musical sense of the piece. I would have preferred to see the section left in, distortion or no. Finally, I wish they could have found a way to include "Pettin' in the Park" from Gold Diggers of 1933, my top favorite of all these production numbers.

The accompanying booklet could not be better. There are tributes to Busby Berkeley and Harry Warren, notes on each of the films and special comments on the musical numbers included, with lots of interesting minutiae, such as how Al Jolson made fun of his wife Ruby Keeler behind her back (the comments on the tastelessness of his "Goin' to Heaven on a Mule" pale before this revelation) and how Busby Berkeley carefully photographed "The Girl at the Ironing Board" from Dames to hide Joan Blondell's pregnancy. Plus there is a complete listing of Busby Berkeley's films. Finally, the booklet and the CD case itself are liberally laced with stills from these films.

Still, what brings me back to these discs time and time again are the delightfulness of the musical numbers and the enthusiastic performances they receive from everyone involved. Not all the films represented here have been available on video, so in the case of those that are not, I at least have these tantalizing moments to give me something to live for until they are. Highly recommended as a souvenir for those who have seen the films and as an introduction to a great era in American film history for those who have not.

Quintessential 30s Pop Music.......2000-10-11

For those Busby buffs who have seen his 30s Warner films and have become infatuated with those luscious Warren-Dubin medlodies, this double CD set is an essential. The selections include not just the vocals, but the entire numbers, complete with dance and pageantry sequences.

Unforgettable numbers, such as "I Only Have Eyes For You," "Lullabye of Broadway," "Young and Healthy," and "Forty-Second Street" not only generate charming waves of nostalgia, but the entire collection is a fine popular culture representation of the Depression-era musical comedy film.

Powell sounds radiant as ever, though most of the female vocalists (i.e., Blondell, Keeler, and Rogers) generally pale in comparison. However, Keeler's lower register in "By a Waterfall" showcases her genuine vocal talents. Fortunately there's Etta Motten's rich mezzo featured on "Remember My Forgotten Man" and Winifred Shaw's solo in "Lullabye of Broadway."

Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.
