This album marks the halfway-point from Ramsey's soul-jazz of the 60's and his ultra funky album Sungoddess. I'm a huge fan of each of these sides of his career and I was delighted when I heard this album. This album is simpler than Sungoddess in that it's just a trio (not his trio from the 60's), giving the album a much more laidback feel. Certainly a wise purchase for any funk fan. Without a doubt a "I cannot believe you don't have this album" if you're a Ramsey Lewis fan.
One unique and wonderful feature of Upendo is the use of the upright bass throughout. Most if not all of the funk I've heard uses electric basses, and after hearing this it's a shame it doesn't happen more often.
Be sure not to skip through track 5 (Concertio de Aranjuez) or else you'll miss one of the best transitions from classical/jazz to sweet sweet funk that's out there!
If you love Sungoddess and are thinking about getting another of Ramsey's funk albums, get this one first. Don't be tricked by the title of his album that came out after this one: Funky Serenity. That one would have been more aptly titled Serenity.
