Jazz and network television have seldom had a close or harmonious relationship, hardly any relationship at all, in fact. But there was a rare and glorious moment in 1957 when CBS presented an hourlong show called The Sound of Jazz. Musical advisers Nat Hentoff and Whitney Balliett didn't aim for a history of the form, but they assembled an extraordinary group of players, including the cream of the swing era, still vital players whom fashion was largely passing by. This CD isn't taken from the soundtrack of the show itself. It's from a recording studio session held a few days before the event with largely the same material and musicians. While several tracks are listed as being by a series of "All-Stars," some key figures keep reappearing, heightening the feel of an unusually coherent jam session.
The great Basie alumnus Jo Jones is the only drummer present, and Coleman Hawkins plays tenor and Vic Dickenson trombone throughout. Billie Holiday turns in one of her finest 1950s performances on "Fine and Mellow," accompanied by the pantheon of swing tenor saxophonists, Hawkins, Ben Webster, and Lester Young, with "Prez," too, in rare form for the time. The Basie tracks surge and soar with as star-studded a big band as he ever led, including Ellington baritonist Harry Carney contributing memorable solos. While trumpeter-vocalist Red Allen was typecast into Dixieland, he was a musician of tremendous imagination, making note choices that could surprise boppers. His two tracks pair him with fellow trumpeter Rex Stewart, whose muted growls provide effective contrast. The various streams of '50s modernism aren't extensively represented, but "Blues" presents an intergenerational meeting of the quirkily creative clarinetists Pee Wee Russell and Jimmy Giuffre. Giuffre's trio with guitarist Jim Hall touches on folk roots and cool, chamber-jazz textures in a performance of "The Train and the River." The most unusual track is "Nervous," an edgy, postbop piano solo by Mal Waldron, then a little-known musician who was present as Holiday's accompanist. --Stuart Broomer

When so much jazz is recycled or reissued, a new Ornette Coleman album is cause for celebration. But Sound Grammar, the free-jazz legend's first release in a decade, is special even by his lofty standards. Coleman was 75 when this live-in-Italy set was recorded in 2005. But he sounds pluckier than he has in years. Pared down to its eloquent basics, the music has a rare combination of beauty, power, lift, and melodic immediacy. With two bassists providing contrasting textures and internal drama--Greg Cohen plucks his acoustic instrument while Tony Falanga bows his--Ornette plays with his usual songful brilliance on alto saxophone and also sounds great on trumpet, a secondary instrument on which he usually demonstrates yeoman skills. (He also dabbles on violin.) Sound Grammar could be better engineered--the astute catchall drumming of Ornette's son Denardo Coleman is too far back in the mix and the basses frequently don't have enough presence. But this album stands with Ornette's best. Two of the songs, "Turnaround" and "Song X," are remakes; the rest of the material is just as good. --Lloyd Sachs
Customer Reviews:
Pulitzer Prize Winning Album!.......2007-04-18
It was announced today that this album won the Pulitzer Prize for music. Congratulations Mr. Coleman!
Switching Instruments.......2007-02-18
Coleman's play on different instruments showed a lot of skill, but the music seemed to lose some of its spontaneity in the process. The jazz represented to me a kind of neo-be-bop that lacked lyrical luster and moving harmonies.

Not a Coleman fan after all........2007-02-02
Thought Coleman was a different type of jazz musician than he is. If you want melody and mellow, forget Coleman. If you like dissonance, try him
Just Beautiful.......2006-12-02
The return of acoustic Ornette Coleman, beautifully recorded, a wonderfully intuitive and interactive band, and the leader playing as sweetly as he ever has in his life. This is my favorite album of Ornette's since
Song X and a reminder that the jazz greats just get better and better as they age.
A vital force in jazz.......2006-10-18
Of the few remaining legends in jazz, Ornette Coleman is the only one that doesn't record fairly often. Sonny Rollins had long running deal with Milestone before starting his own label, and Ornette has followed that route in starting his own imprint and releasing Sound Grammar, his first album in nine years and a recording of a concert from Germany in 2005 where he performed on alto saxophone, violin and trumpet with his son Denardo Coleman on drums, Gregory Cohen on bass, and Tony Falanga on bass. The music is classic Coleman with sweeping joyful arcs of alto on some reinterpretations of classics and a few new compositions.
"Jordan" leads things off with a choppy start-stop feel with Ornette improvising over bowed and plucked bass. There's an interlude where the two basses improvise together before Coleman contributes a few trumpet blasts. "Sleep Talking" begins with mournful bowed bass with some light alto sax comments. A bass duet over drums contributes a very open sound to the music. "Turnaround" has an almost "Saints Go Marching In" fell to the melody. Ornette has a gently sweeping solo over a bed of bass and drums. The group gets a beautifully unique sound with Ornette's keening alto and two basses. "Matador" takes things on a faster pace with some jaunty, smiling alto before two basses, both plucked, duke it out before Ornette sweeps back in and takes everybody out.
Both "Waiting" and "Once Only" convey a deep sense of plaintive loss and yearning with Coleman's saxophone nearly crying the blues in these deeply emotional performances. Contrasting those performances are a couple of free up-tempo numbers, "A Call To Duty" and Song X." The first is a fast paced, full throttle improvisation with ominous bass and drums keeping a wicked beat while Ornette contributes some slurred trumpet and sharp alto saxophone. Finally "Song X" ends the concert on a very high note with some daredevil heart-stopping alto improvisation over frantic basses and drums. Denardo Coleman gets his lone drum solo and there a cool bass duet interlude, but the moment belongs to the leader who is absolutely on fire. This is an endlessly exciting and powerful disc proving that Ornette Coleman is still a vital force in jazz. Very highly recommended.

Boots will always be king........2007-04-12
Nobody will ever plan like Boots Randolph. He's the king. And this CD ois incredible.
A great CD.......2004-08-16
Boots Randolph is probably one of the best sax players on the planet. His articulation, tone, everything is awesome. Yakety Sax is a great song. One of my favorite Jazz songs. Get this CD if you like jazz or sax. Or just get it anyway.
Boots still knocks out the competition........2003-09-28
Boots is still the best Tenor Sax player alive! Kenny G does not even come close to him. Nobody has matched his incredible tone quality(quality of his sound). This was one of his best Cds. I hope I will get to see him perform live once again.

Requested CD.......2007-01-10
This CD was on a Christmas list for a family member, he said he truly enjoyed it. And it was so easy to find on Amazon.
What you see is what you get.......2006-11-15
Nice cd with some of the best of Boots. If you're a cw fan, you'll probably like it even more since several cuts are definitely cw.
Pretty good.......2006-07-17
It has the music the vynyl had although my memory has more depth of sound in the vynyl. I'd rather have it than not.
Lounge Sax!.......2004-11-23
Boy this CD brings back memories as it was one of my Mom's faves when growing up. Now that I'm an adult, I can appreciate it as great Lounge Music. It's kinda corny, nostalgic and fun. If this was repackaged as Lounge Music by Sony I think Boots would find a whole new and younger generation of listeners.
For Sax Lovers.......2004-01-25
If you're a sax lover, you probably want this album. I wanted a couple of songs from it, and ended up enjoying just that. An entire album of sax is a bit trying--at least for me. I really appreciate the up-tempo wailing songs, but the slower songs just reminded me that I was listening to a saxophone, which at times sounded too alone.

The first time you listen to this disc you will undoubtedly be transported directly back to your childhood. Charles Schulz's Peanuts characters will go toe-tapping and funky-dancing through your mind's eye. Play it a few more times, though (ignoring the dialogue snippets, if you can), and you will begin to truly revel in Guaraldi's wonderful, humorous, deep piano playing. You'll hear why he's such an influence on new age ivory tickler George Winston, but you'll also realize that Winston's holiday music never quite sparkles with the underlying passion, and humor, that twinkles in these grooves. Buy it for the nostalgia--keep it because it will remain one of the most enchanting albums in your holiday collection. --Michael Ruby

At The Movies by Andre Rieu.......2007-05-20
Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music. Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".
very beautiful.......2007-01-09
This cd is very beautiful. It captures the songs wonderfully. The orchestra does a fine job.
Refreshing Music.......2006-11-03
Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.
from texas--AND FROM A MUSIC LOVER.......2006-08-30
ANDRE RIEU TAKES US ON A WONDERFUL TRIP BACK IN TIME TO THE MOVIES YOU CAN=T FORGET AND THE MUSIC THAT MADE THEM CLASSICS. DO BUY IT. IT IS A TREASURE...
Andre Rieu - Music for the masses.......2006-08-10
Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

The Master.......2007-04-02
Started playing the sax in 1944. To this day, Boots is my favorite and I've found no one (certainly incluing me) who can come close to matching his work. All of his CDs are incredible.
It doesn't get any better than Boots!!!.......2006-12-15
Kenny G., sit down and take some lessons from a true musician! Boots is the best. Buy this CD and let 'Yakety Sax' take you away. Pick up a Donna Fargo CD while you're at it. The two compliment eachother perfectly and can set the perfect mood for a romantic eavening!

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

This impressionistic score from Marcel Camus's 1958 cinematic retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus was most Americans' introduction to the Brazilian musical style called bossa nova. As it became a nationwide craze that featured both Brazilian samba and U.S. cool-jazz participants, the names of Black Orpheus composers Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa became familiar far beyond the hi-fi set. Along with the haunting theme song, "Manha de Carnaval," and several Jobim compositions are the vibrant street sounds of the pre-Lenten festival Carnaval, which provides the backdrop to the tragic love story of Orpheus and Eurydice. The score is awash with percussive samba rhythms and the laughter and chanting of the annual festival melee. This is a great disc to play when the day needs a parade. --Lois Maffeo
Customer Reviews:
The best and original........2007-01-29
I like Manha De Carnaval so much that I listened to Domingo, Nana Mouskouri, Carly Simon and Luis Miguel's versions borrowed from the libraries. I like the original song in track 6 by Luiz Bonfa. Track 8 guitar playing is also beautiful. Track 11 female vocal is wonderful, spontaneous and second to none. The sound quality is excellent.
wonderful.......2006-03-26
It's wonderful to have a new recording of the sound track from the movie Black Orpheus. The movie was one of my favorites but I played my old record of the sound track so many times (and put it through so many moves) it was scratched and no longer enjoyable to listen to. Now everytime I listen to my CD version I am transported to the time and space of the movie and the time and space of the early sixties when I first heard it. The little bonus addition at the end of the CD is fun too.
Buy the movie, not this soundtrack.......2006-03-09
Save your money. I love the movie very much, and to watch it and to listen it is an experience like none other. However, if you look for the music from this movie, do not look here. This is just the movie, except without video. I have great respect for Bonfa and Jobim's work on this music, but they do not get glorified truly since the tracks change so quickly and the movie sounds play such a large role in the soundtrack cd. Listen to Trio da Paz and their Black Orpheus album and see how it compares, and even though it is not the original Jobim or Bonfa, it pays more homage to them than this original soundtrack. Verve took the wrong route with this one. Yes the music is landmark in evolving Samba/Bossa Nova, but this cd does not depict truly how wonderful the music is.
Great Disc.......2006-01-15

This dizzyingly diverse melting pot of sounds is a perfect primer on tropicalia--and then some. Tropicalia arose in the late 1960s as a genre informed by rock, bossa nova, soul, and underground rhythms, all mashed together to create an electrifying new movement in Brazilian music. The artists assembled here--Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Gal Costa-are all an integral part of the tropicalia scene. Each, however, makes their own potent artistic statement. Enthusiastic vocals, inspired chants, inventive loops, and hushed arrangements collide throughout this expanse collection. You're never quite sure what you'll hear from track to track. Gal Costa's "Vou Recomecar" is a delight, playing like a foreign counterpart to Dusty Springfield's blue-eyed soul sparkle. The genius, however, is that every moment on Tropicalia sounds both classic and modern at the same time. Most everything here is as urgent and electric as anything you'll hear on contemporary radio. --Joey Guerra
Album Description
Tropicalia in the late 1960s revolutionized Brazilian music mixing Psychedelic Rock, avant-garde musique concrete (tape loops, sound experiments), Samba, Funk and Soul into a truly unique combination. This is the first album to bring together all the artists involved in Tropicalia, Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Gal Costa and more. Os Mutantes, the sophisticated musical anarchists from Sao Paulo not only became the musical template for Beck, they were also discovered by Kurt Cobain on tour in Brazil who tried (and failed) to get them to support Nirvana. CD comes complete with the customary extensive 40 page booklet that is full of exclusive photos. Soul Jazz. 2006.

This Soul Jazz Release Comes Complete with the Customary Extensive Sleeve-notes Contextualising Tropicalia, Exclusive Photos and Slipcase.
Customer Reviews:
Tropicalia, again.......2006-07-19
It's nice to see more of this revolutionary era in Brazilian music released. However, anyone checking who was performing a main role in the movement, by looking at the Sargeant Pepper's-inspired cover of Tropicalia, the 1968 album, will notice that:
a) Tom Ze was there.
b) Jorge Ben or Jor Benjor was not.
c) Nara Leao was there on the cover and in the poetic "Lindoneia" with Caetano. Maybe the Caetano song in English was included as a marker of his exile after the Military Redeemer coup cracked down on anyone offending "values."
I believe Jorge Ben was always his own man. Gil, after Tropicalia, and Caetano, also after Tropicalia, discovered how great Jorge Ben was. Now, a US group also likes him.
Maybe Jards Macalé should be included. The problem with compilations from Brazil is that it's such a huge country, with so many different rhythms; it's hard to pick and choose. Man is lazy. It's easier to go with the "pop." Oops, pop, goes the weasel.
pretty swell.......2006-06-27
if i were in charge of this project i'd change the following: more jorge ben, more gal costa, less mutantes, less tom ze (or better song choices), and maybe replace lost in paradise for a different caetano veloso song. notheless, this album is really excellent, and a great intro to tropicalia music.
The 60s Happened in Brazil Too!.......2006-06-26
One of the best reveiewed ablums of 2006 (according to Metacritic.com), I was not disappointed.
I am a fan of 60s music and vintage 60s sounds, and this album is a treasure chest of pyschedelia that I had never been exposed to before.
I don't hand out too many 5 stars (or 1 star for that matter), but this one is worthy if you love that sound....
More fuzz!!! psychedelic brazillian style!.......2006-05-24
Wow! this is a must have.
Some genius compiled this list of legends from Brasil and created a masterpiece! Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes, Gal Costa and Tom Ze and others!
Here are songs from the 60's-70's of Brasil that rocked the house and these songs still stand the test of time.
these songs have many different ranges in sounds but you wanna get up shake it up when you hear'em and maybe take a tab or two and just get down.
You have some great Bossa Nova overtones all over it but when you least expect it the Mutants will play something trippy, you'll never know who's gonna play what.
You get a good sample of all of the different stylings these artist are capable of.
this CD is a must! this CD is an incredible starter kit for anyone interested in the musical legends of Brasil.
