The vastly popular clarinetist and New Orleans stalwart Pete Fountain recorded this album just after the end of his hugely popular two-year stint on Lawrence Welk's Sunday-evening television show. He quit to return to more jazz-based playing. This 1959 quartet album, with Stan Wrightsman on piano, followed Welk's show, with The Blues just behind--and they were both nationwide hits. Long before, Fountain had soaked up the life of New Orleans, the steamy cradle of jazz. The tunes here are evergeens for the first days of jazz associated with New Orleans greats, particularly Louis Armstrong. With unmistakable tone, richness, and poise in his clarinet playing, Fountain enlivens tunes that in lesser hands would encourage hackneyed rehash, with piercing attack, swagger, and clever, fresh arrangements. --Peter Monaghan

Pete Fountain at his best!.......2007-07-04
This CD has all of Pete Fountain's great hits and his back-up combo is
fabulous! If you want to be in New Orleans, just listen to this; you will
never tire of it.....just the greatest music and musicians.
Pete Fountain In His Prime .......2004-12-31
I have been a fan of Pete Fountain's for over 35 years. I enjoy the Dixieland Sound but feel in many recordings, the support instuments tend to clutter the listening effect. Pete Fountains New Orleans(1959) digitally reissued, is a real gem. Here we have a quartet with immense talent and feeling for jazz/blues. The balance between piano, bass, drums and clarinet in volume and timing is brilliant. Stereo separation is consistent and clean. Stan,Morty,Jack & Pete work brilliantly together to stamp their authority on 12 old standards. The change of tempo on many tracks adds a new dimension and interpretation("Ol' Man River" is a good example)
Tracks of note include: When It's Sleepy Time Down South,Ol' Man River,Sweethearts On Parade,Lazy River,Tin Roof Blues. My favourite is "Basin Street Blues"
This album is a must for any Pete Fountain Enthusiast.
Great performance by Pete Fountain.......2002-10-31
One of the best New Orleans Dixieland albums I have ever heard. Especially good is the final song, "Tin Roof Blues". Pete Fountain is one of the best performers around of this genre and this album is a real gem.

Pete's virtuosity combined with solid trombone, piano, trumpet, bass, and drums with plenty of solos combine for a great recording of jazz standards.

A One-of-a Kind Gem!.......2001-03-13
The word "dixieland" rubs many jazz fans the wrong way. Forget the labeling. For anyone who loves jazz clarinet or, for that matter, those modern-day listeners who tend to be dismissive of the old licorice stick, this album provides a rare opportunity to hear virtually all the masters of the instrument on a single disc. It's unlikely a collection like it exists anywhere. The all-star line-up includes the New Orleans masters (Dodds, Noone, Bechet), the Chicago school (Pee Wee Russell), and latter-day giants (Wilbur, Davern, Fountain). Most telling is the expressive range and variety, from the intimate and heartfelt conversations of Russell, to the playful, flirtatious melodic statements of Irving Fazola, to the endlessly inventive responses of Omar Simeon, to the incisive, penetrating attack of Davern, to the breathtaking virtuoso solo work of Edmund Hall. In fact, Fountain's own smooth, polished performance sets him more in the company of Benny Goodman than alongside the highly personal voices represented in this collection. Those listeners who are so quick to champion the tenor sax as the most expressive instrument in jazz, as the closest thing to the human voice, should listen carefully and often to this album before making any further pronouncements.

Customer Reviews:
Good Dixieland, but poor audio quality.......2000-06-02
I just purchased this CD, and am very dissapointed with the audio quality. It sounds like a very old monophonic, recording, (it appears to be recorded around 1957 according to the linear notes) quite a lot a echo at times, sort of like when they used to try to make stereo recordings out of mono. There are much better sounding recordings from this era --how I wish they would re-release "Pete Fountain Day" from the the same year on the Coral label (I believe). Now THAT had great music and fidelity! From the audio samples available on this site, the $6 "Pete's Beat" sounds MUCH better both musically and aurally. When I buy a Pete Fountain album, I want to hear him at his best. On this album he sounds basically just like a sideman. I would prefer ANY of the old Dukes of Dixeland albums featuring him than this one.
Radio Free New Orleans.......2000-03-09
You're not likely to hear these songs on a radio station anytime soon. That's a shame. This is joyful music. The trumpets they blare... The clarinets they wail... Dixieland at its best!
Most of this is upbeat jazz, but then you hear a gem like "Bayou Blues" and you just sit back and smile. I like this CD...

A big ol' grab batch of Satch..........2003-09-08
If you are a fan of real Traditional Jazz, and a fan of Armstrong's performances of classics like "Basin Street Blues", "When It's Sleepy Time Down South", "Muskrat Ramble", and the like, many of them Live and relaxed (were they ever anything else?) - then you will dig this compilation, put together by Pete Fountain of his favorite Pops 'Dixieland' moments. The dates vary from 1927 (in the studio with Johnny Dodds) through the All-Star Band California Concerts in 1951, Live, to a really great and loose studio version of "Free As A Bird/ Oh, Didn't He Ramble" with Earl Hines, Cozy Cole, Jack Teagarden, Barney Bigard, and Arvell Shaw in 1950, where Louis is REALLY swingin', and even a duet with Billy Kyle of "Dear Old Southland" from 1957. One of the few problems with a compilation over such stretches of time is the variance in volume and tone sometimes from track to track, otherwise this is a bona-fide candidate for more than 4 stars. There are plenty of great Satch moments to treasure on this great compilation, and I'm finding it hard to pick any favorites...but the aformentioned duet definately stands out, as does all of the Live stuff, and...well...the whole damn CD. If you can eat your figs moldy, you will love this, I guarantee it. And even if you have no idea what I'm talking about and you just love great jazz, Armstrong-style, pick it up used for cheap and have fun!
