Product Description
Eddie Condon's goal with "Midnight In Moscow" was to record Dixieland-flavored versions of such "international" pieces as "Meadowlands," "Loch Lomond," "La Vie En Rose" and "The Sheik Of Araby" with a crew including Bobby Hackett on trumpet, Peanuts Hucko on clarinet, Lou McGarity on trombone, Dick Cary on piano, Jack Lesberg on bass and Buzzy Drootin on drums. "The Roaring Twenties" was longtime Condon drummer George Wettling's idea - the goal being to "celebrate the musicians who were...the principal influences on jazz in the twenties." On it, he and Condon are joined by the likes of Wild Bill Dickenson, Billy Butterfield, Cutty Cutshall, Bob Wilbur, Gene Schroeder and Leonard Gaskin.

If you already have Dixieland Jam, a hard to find disk, then
you will have some of the same tracks here on the Roaring Twenties portion of this twofer. However, even if you have Dixieland Jam, the two do not quite overlap. My favorites on the Roaring Twenties portion are Whatcha Call'em Blues, My Monday Date, and Heebie Jeebies. These are not on Dixieland Jam. One added bonus for the overlapping tracks is that they have been enhanced during the remastering process (since Dixieland Jam) to bring out Gene Schroeder's piano and George Wettling's drums. Even Condon's guitar comes through a bit more. So, not to worry if you have Dixieland Jam.
For the three favorite tracks mentioned above, you have Bill Butterfield on trumpet and Cutty Cutshall on trombone. For the Midnight In Moscow portion, my favorites tracks are Dark Eyes, The Theme From Swan Lake, Loch Lomond, and La Vie En Rose. If you believe these classic songs to be beautiful in their original venue, you might very well enjoy Bobby Hackett rendering them with a dixieland flavor. On the Swan Lake track, one of the highlights on the third run-through is the use of Lou McGarity's muted trombone in the background. Because this piece is at swing tempo, the pulsing muted trombone is a real perk. Purchase this disk to really enjoy dixieland jazz at its finest.
