4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF BETTE!.......2003-11-23

For those who cherish those Bette Davis Golden Oldies as I do, you'll not want to be without this CD. All her most memorable film scores are here: Warner's fanfare introduces the exquisite "It Can't Be Wrong/Charlotte's Theme" from "Now, Voyager", Steiner's poignantly haunting score for "Dark Victory" the suitably regal score for "All About Eve" by Alfred Newman and the instantly recognizable theme for "A Stolen Life" - again by Max Steiner.

Korngold's score for "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex" is fine as are the various scores for "Deception", "The Letter" and "All This, and Heaven Too" & "In This Our Life". When Davis made "Dark Victory" she was a bit "upstaged" by Max Steiner's score towards the final fade-out of the film. Judy Traherne ascends the staircase, says good-bye to Daffy and Don (her dogs) and quietly insists that her maid Martha leave her alone, undisturbed to die in peace: "beautifully and finely". During this shot, the angels are singing ethereally and Davis flung herself at director Edmund Goulding during reheasal and demanded: "Damn it, who's playing this scene? Max or me??" No fears. It worked. Beautifully.

    5 out of 5 stars One of Gerhardt's Best.......2002-07-26

This is one of the best albums from the classic film scores series conducted by Charles Gerhardt with the National Philharmonic Orchestra. Max Steiner composed most of the scores represented here. Max Steiner was one of the greats. My favorite cut is the "main title" from A STOLEN LIFE. This tune was uesd again in A SUMMER PLACE with Troy Donahue. Both films have their central settings in New England. This tune greatly captures the feeling of the land and sea and the people living on the New England coast. This is a lush and beatiful cd.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply superb!.......2002-01-14

This is one of about a half dozen or so recordings of classic film scores conducted by Mr. Charles Gerhardt, performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra, and produced by Mr. George Korngold (Erich Wolfgang Korngold's younger son). These recordings were made in the 1970's, and with, perhaps, one exception, have yet to be equalled much less surpassed! Almost single handedly, they have shaped the film scores of today and made CDs of same a major profit center for the recording industry. Don't just buy this one; grab anything that has Mr. Gerhardt name on it!

5 out of 5 stars Priceless for all old movie fans.......2000-03-13

I have had this album for years and was thrilled to find it is out in CD. This is a must have for anyone who loves old movies, especially movies of the '30's and '40's. The music is beautiful and fully orchestrated by the National Philharmonic. Each selection elicits all of the atmosphere and attendant feelings of the film for which it was written.

      5 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2004-01-21

Yeah, this CD's pretty good. Actually, the CD is great! Too bad there aren't any available! Good thing I already have a copy. I wonder if she has a website? I bet you could find one there. hmmmmmmmm.

      5 out of 5 stars Worth a try.......2003-12-05

I bought this album because I was off sick at home and watched The Bread, my sweet on Sky movies. As the credits rolled a voice drifted in to my ears that I had to hear again. I flopped off the sofa to check for the soundtrack listing and saw the name. In my weakened state I managed to get on to Amazon and find one album without the track I'd just heard but thought I'd give it a try anyway. I'm glad I did. What a fantastic voice! If someone doesn't sign her soon and get her music out to a much wider audience I'll start a record company myself and do it. C'mon all you record company types! I'm living proof that you can sell Rachel McCartney in the UK, just get more of it out here. Rachel, good luck and let's hope that you're a household name across the planet by this time next year! By the way, I really liked the album too!!

5 out of 5 stars Soulful folk singer.......2003-05-02

I just bought this CD from the sidewalk during a break when Rachel Mccartney (and a bandmate for some songs on clarinet - a nice selection to go with the acoustic guiter) was singing and playing for free in Harvard Square in Cambridge. I'm from Seattle and was visiting on business that day and had the evening free to wander and enjoy the vibrant local scene. Rachel will undoubtedly break-out to be quite popular and probably just needs to get signed to a big label for this to happen. This recording features 8 extremely catchy songs with Rachels soulful singing and some complementary instruments. The recording quality is good but could have benefitted from better mixing/recording - however, I like this recording personally and am giving it 5 stars because it captures the raw street-performance essence of that evening I first heard Rachel and co. in Harvard Sq.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD for lovers of folk and female rockers.......2002-12-18

Rachel McCartney is a wonderful singer/songwriter from the Boston area. I had the pleasure of seeing her and purchasing this CD last summer. As comparisons go, which I hate to do because sometimes they miss, I'd compare her to Shawn Colvin, Ani DiFranco, Sarah Harmer and Bonnie Rait. Rachel is a true talent...a strong strummer on guitar with a booming, but sensitive voice. Sometimes bluesy, sometimes rocking, Rachel sings about relationships and dealing with thier peaks as well as their valleys. She sings openly about her beliefs and struggles. I would recommend this CD, but most of all, look for this artist to break out in the near future.

I program a live internet station which features smooth jazz and slow jams. Ronald contacted me for possible airplay. Since we support the work of new artists, I had him send me a copy for review. When I sampled the first song, I knew he was smooth. The whole CD is great. We have been playing "Real Chocklett" in heavy rotation. Needless to say, our smooth listeners dig his grooves. He will be a mianstzy at our station..

5 out of 5 stars Defines Smooth Jazz!!.......2004-05-05

Ronald Turner's new CD defines "Smooth"! I was drawn to review the CD when asked to hear some samples on his website. Immediately, I thought the title track and the song "Real Chocklett" reminded me of artists like Pieces of a Dream, Gerald Albright and Kirk Whalum. With the help of a highly professional music support, Turner puts together a high quality recording with 14 memorable tunes. Kudos to Andre Roberson, better know as "Jackson State" for his smooth work on the Saxophone and singer Erica Dymakkus for her great vocals. Together, they make this an outstanding CD. After listening to it, I thought this was one CD I could put in my changer and never take out. It's that great!! Buy it!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Smooth Jazz CD Of The Millennium.......2003-05-17

This is the best of the smooth jazz CD's that has been produced in many years. There are so many good back to back songs, it's hard to choose which one would be the best No. 1 hit. This CD is burning up the East coast radio waves and is rapidly migrating to radio stations in the West and Internet radio. This CD is a winner and has outsold the number one R & B CD's at the VIP record chain in the Los Angeles area.

Ronald Turner's It's All About Love CD is among the award winning CD's aired by Smoothjazz.com. Ronald is a 2003 winner of the Smoothie Awards. You won't regret purchasing this CD.

From the first lyric notes struck by Carla Cook on this album, it's clear that the word "versatile" barely begins to describe her talents as a vocalist. Cook has a smoky voice that relishes the lower ranges, where flurries of lyrics get spooled together only to come rolling out in a variety of quick and slow paces, brief and elongated durations, and more. Her educational training is apt for her talents: she studied speech communication and makes exactness of phrase sound downright artful, frequently dropping in tiny scat elements that keep the music skipping and full of bounce. Cook's band expands around the sublime piano work of Cyrus Chestnut (or the more rambunctious piano of Andy Milne) to include violinist Regina Carter, who has a prodigious fullness of tone. Cook tackles tunes by Milton Nascimento, Marvin Gaye, and even Neil Young. And it all works flawlessly. A 1999 Grammy Award nominee, Cook is destined to make high marks. --Andrew Bartlett

I heard a sample of your CD on "Make Me Wanna Holla". I can tell that the music vibe is there and it's "right". We need more musicians and music like this to be out there. I see where the great sounds are coming from using musicians like Andy Milne.

My own smooth jazz CD entitled "It's All About Love" will be on the market soon and I know you'll love it. Carla, like your CD, mine is filled with good music too.

        People, buy Carla's CD!

        Sincerely,

        5 out of 5 stars Carla cooks.......2000-03-10

Carla Cook is one of the freshest female jazz vocalists to come along in many years. She's not afraid to render old standards and her approach is classic with a contemporary flavor that makes her a talent to watch for eagerly. Fabulous debut.

5 out of 5 stars cool and jazzy.......1999-12-28

Very nice toe tapping jazz. I especially liked the renditions of inner city blues and heart of gold. Carla's great voice and scat singing style combined with good jazz and a hint of violin make for a happy listener...

        5 out of 5 stars A FUN BALLET WITH QUITE A HISTORY!.......2000-01-30

It can be said that La Sylphide (Sylfiden as the Danes call it, was premiered by the Royal Danish Ballet in 1836), composed by Herman Severin Lovenskiold and choreographed by Bournonville, is the earliest piece of ballet music from the Romantic period that has been recorded. However, an ealier version of the same ballet by a different composer (Schneitzhoeffer)--no recordings--and choreographer has been revived by the Paris Ballet (Who knows how faithful it is to the original!). La Sylphide is a story about a female spirit, called the Sylphide, who falls in love with a young man; he too falls in love with her. But the little courtship is to be cut short by a witch. The fairy tale ends with the death of the Sylphide. The star ballerina of the first version of La Sylphide was Marie Taglioni, who was forever associated with the beginning of the Romantic ballet. Now we come to the version recorded on this CD. First, a little history. After the Danish choreographer, August Bournonville, saw Marie Taglioni dance in the role of the Sylphide at the Paris Opera, he wanted to stage his own production of the ballet. But first, he had to purchase the rights for using the score (by Schneitzhoeffer), but to his disappointment, it was too expensive. Consequently, he decided to have entirely new music written. And the man to accomplish this was Lovenskiold. So successful was this second version that the complete Bournonville choreography along with Lovenskiold's score are still used today by the Royal Danish Ballet. This is a superb "complete" performance by the Danish Radio Sinfoniette. The sound is clear and rich! Damgaard who has been the chief conductor at the Royal Danish Theatre since 1990 conducts beautifully. Under his baton, the orchestra makes the music sound alive and poignant. For those who are interested in ballets or just a great fairy tale, I highly recommend they get this CD. The only alternative recording is the one on Chandos, performed by the Royal Danish Orchestra (conducted by Garforth). It is also excellently performed (Read my review for that recording!). That CD contains an extra number (a pas de deux, which is not ever played as part of the complete ballet), which is a delight to hear! The CPO version, however, contains James' Act 1 solo, which is not in the Chandos recording. If you're a completist, get both!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording of Lovenskiold 's Ballet.......1999-10-26

It is a beatiful recording of the first romantic ballet, who has a precursor on Taglioni's Sylphide (which can be appreciate on video recording by Ghislene Thesmar interpretation with the corps of Opera Paris Ballet, music by Scheneihoffer, available at amazon.com). The perfomance of Lovenskiold partiture by the Danish Radio Simfonieta conducted by Daamgaardt is perfect, without affectation and it reach the maximum climax on second act. I bought this record because I listen on the radio the overture and the introduction of the first act, which inmediately decided me to find out and bought this version. There is only a criticism to the booknote which is included on the CD. Taglioni 's Sylphide has been succesfull performed in our century, on the seventies by a reconstruction taken on by Pierre Lacotte and interpreted by Ghislaine Thesmar. Teatro Colon of Buenos Aires offer this version on 1974 on stage and it was suscefull received at Argentine and many great Argentine Ballerinas interpreted the beautiful role of the light Sylphide.

Mary Carewe is a Britisher with impeccable taste in lyrics and a delightful and fascinating voice. This is high-toned cabaret or, as she dubs her intimate program, "serious cabaret". If you like Ute Lemper or Bolcom and Morris, you'll enjoy Mary Çarewe. This is her only solo CD to date, but I can't help but believe that more are in the works for this talented soprano. Her big vocal range is matched by her big voice, which regularly accompanies symphonic orchestras in the UK and Europe in programs of modern music and pop, i.e., would you believe a program of James Bond film title songs with the Hallé orchestra?
