From Jazziz
It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) is an anthemic hit. Powerfully rhythmic, it announces an attitude and an era. This 1932 Columbia session features perhaps the best of the female vocalists to work with Ellington's bands, Ivie Anderson. Best known for ballads, Anderson proves equally adept at scatting - first, after Wellman Braud's slapping bass, then, in response to Joe "Tricky Sam" Nanton's muted trombone. From the beginning, Ellington's instrumental stars each projected a vocal quality, and here Anderson's vocal sounds a part of Ellington's instrumental palette, too.
