About the Artist
David Garfield's mission statement is "I make music." And "make music" he does, as a world-renowned keyboard artist, producer, and composer. Be it jazz, rock, funk, or world beat -- he is the creative force behind the production of many internationally acclaimed recordings.
David started his career with jazz greats such as Willie Bobo, Freddie Hubbard, and Tom Scott in the 70s. After being on the LA scene for several years, he moved into the vast studio world during its heyday and earned a reputation for fine craftsmanship and versatility. This work eventually led to composing opportunities for television, film, and commercials (NBC/Disney/Nippon Television/RTL Germany).
During the 80s Garfield arranged and produced many top Japanese artists, and went on to produce his own projects for release in Japan. For the past 20 years, he has enjoyed continued popularity and success in that part of the world.
David's access to top studio musicians and state of the art equipment led him to start his own production company, Creatchy Productions. His Creatchy Records label soon followed.
His first international release on Creatchy, "Tribute to Jeff", featured 78 musicians and artists, including Don Henley, Eddie Van Halen, Michael McDonald, and Richard Marx, a virtual who's who of the music industry. Critically acclaimed worldwide, this project reached the top ten charts in Japan (Pop) and the U.S. (NAC). David quickly followed up "Tribute to Jeff" with "I Am The Cat
Man," which has also received critical success around the globe.
In addition to these solo endeavors, David frequently collaborates with guitarist Steve Lukather (Toto) in the band Los Lobotomys and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting) in the band Karizma. These two bands have released eight CDs under the Creatchy Records label and have toured the world extensively.
Garfield also has ongoing music relationships with George Benson (he is currently Benson's Music Director), Boz Scaggs and Natalie Cole. And over the years, he has recorded with Cher, Spinal Tap, The Rippingtons, and Larry Carlton and has performed live with Michael Bolton, The Blues Brothers, Brenda Russell, and Rick Braun.
"Giving Back" is David Garfield's brand new release, which once again features world-class musicians and artists. Recorded in both Los Angeles and New York, these 13 hot new tracks reflect a fresh direction for his West Coast Sound. He is enjoying extremely positive feedback from his international fan base and from the advance reviews of his U.S. industry contacts. With the release of this new CD, David is continuing a wide range of other activities. He is performing worldwide with his own band and as a guest artist with George Benson and others. In addition to his instructional videos and CDs, his new book, Pop and Rock Keyboards, will be available soon from Hal Leonard Publishing.
He continues to produce other artists and groups including Oleta Adams, Flora Purim, and Los Lobotomys. And David is continuing to write and produce his own music, with several new projects due to be released in the coming year.

Customer Reviews:
Simply amazing!.......2007-02-10
Arturo Sandoval is one of those few people who will be remembered in 100 years. The intensity of which he performs leaves little to be desired. His virtuosity of the trumpet is top notch, but guess what? He's progressed beyond that point in his career. He has been performing for a very long time and he simply does not always play fast and high anymore. As a musician, he has matured; there is more to his music than hard trumpet playing. Put it this way; I discovered him because of his technique, but I stay for his musicianship. This CD/DVD set is a prime example. If you buy this for his trumpet playing alone, there is some but you will get the full experience Sandoval is trying to portray. Every musician in the band is extremely talented and they work really well together. Bottom line, if you are not in a comatose state, you will enjoy this wonderful live recording.
Love every note of it.......2007-01-07
Arturo Sandoval is one of the most gifted trumpet players of all time, and in my opinion, the best of today. I've seen him twice live, and this DVD/CD set helps his performance come to life for anyone who owns it.
He has a great sense of humor, and plays instruments including trumpet, flugelhorn, percussion, jewish harp, and piano. He is a master at every instrument he touches, and the entire CD is a masterpiece.
Sandoval plays way high, way low, aggressive, suave... and all around sexy. The musicians he plays with are nothing short of the best. Every player owns the music they output.
One of my favorite CD's.
Not quite like seeing him live, but representative.......2006-11-10
Having seen Arturo Sandoval this past summer in Newport and soon again
in the Boston area post-Thanksgiving, I was particularly pleased to have obtained this, what I believe is the only live recording by one of the finest and most exciting live jazz masters today. His astounding command of all things Afro-Cuban, funk, classical and just about any genre he wants to communicate will grace your ears and be a welcome addition to any collection.
Sandoval sampler.......2006-08-29
As always from Arturo, great music. Exceptional sidemen, high energy. Disappointing video on the DVD, lack of clarity, and sufficient isolation on the musicians. Audio mix is occaisonally overwhelmed, lacks definition when the group cranks it up. All in all, a must have for fans of Sandoval, especially for the price.
It's hard not to like Arturo.......2006-04-29
I'm one of those guys who has chosen to be "willfully ignorant" on some things in an attempt to keep them "fun," at least to a certain degree - Jazz is one of those. So my review is not coming from a serous Arturo fan, but someone that simply wants to enjoy some music, or a show, or whatever.
I had no expectations at all when I popped the DVD into the player. As the program began I first noticed that the stage was pretty small, and that the camera position made the club look small as well. But this setup accomplishes something special; it brings us to the performance instead of bringing the performance to our living rooms (I wanted to leave the living room anyway J.And I may have actually sat in that very camera position from time to time in clubs.
I don't know how this performance rates to Arturo's other live performances, but I am a bigger fan after watching it, and have enjoyed my other Arturo CD's more as well.
I liked the performance; I had no idea how gifted Arturo actually is until watching this. One of the things I appreciate most about Arturo is his sensitivity to his audience; he keeps it moving, changes the pace, shares the spotlight, and keeps it fresh. He serves his audience as opposed to performers who expect the audience worship them.

As the dean of modern Cuban jazz pianists, Jesus "Chucho" Valdés, the founder of the supergroup, Irakere, has been wowing listeners for years with his Caribbean keyboard wizardry, which combines the power of McCoy Tyner, the brilliance of Art Tatum, and the poetry of Bill Evans. Recorded live in Manhattan, this concert date shows Valdés's pianistic gifts shining through magnificently. His musical vista crosses several frontiers: from the beautiful boleros"Besame Mucho" and "Delirio," to the clavé-rhythmed "El Manisero" and the ballad "Somewhere over the Rainbow." On this date, Chucho Valdés claims the piano literature of at least two worlds and makes a lovely, fluid portrait of it all. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
Not music.......2006-08-02
I bought this album because he was part of a great latin jazz ensemble and I felt like some good music. Boy was I wrong! This album is full of rambling through the keys, jumping off the melody to perform excentricities, to then come back to a tired song.
It is exasperating having to wait for him to finish his showing so you can listen to the music. I bought it based on the sample bit and my gosh can he play with emotion but after he gets bored with what is in the sheet he just leaves you hanging
to go play.
He literally decomposes the music to then bring it back together. It is dissapointing.
Waste of Time Deux.......2005-09-29
I say "Deux" because my review of his album "Solo Piano" would apply to this album as well. There is none of the haunting lyricism which he displayed in "Claudia" with Arturo Sandoval. There is none of the genuine Cuban beauty as in "Cenizas" with Omara Portuondo. There was plenty of running up and down the keyboard with lots of "brujo" and "flash" Good for the tourist trade, but hardly memorable.
Live in New York.......2002-10-21
I must agree with the unfortunately unsigned message from "A music fan" called "Chill out, Chucho". I do not like anonymus...
I gave him a 5 star because he has big hands, play great, extend himself to new sounds and arrangements, and he's Bebo's son; but he abuses and leaves the tune behind to perform his extravagances. Definitely, that's his style. But the tune takes 25% of the performance, the rest is Chucho's descargas; with percussion it will have less monotony.
Listen to his father Bebo, and you'll have small descargas but the purity and integrity of the melody remains more.
chill out chucho.......2001-12-15
Half brilliance, half wankfest. I just wish they he wouldn't mix the two on every track. Unfortunately he chooses to display his monster chops in a very unmusical way that detracts from the MUSIC. You can almost hear the audience wishing he would stop abusing the piano and continue with the tune. But the rest is just fantastic. I'd love to hear him play a set without all the fireworks, it's unbecoming. Tatum was positively restrained in comparison.
All you'll ever need!.......2001-08-29
If you're wandering the wilderness looking for the real great piano album, Congratulation! Your journey has finally ended! And you know what? It is REWARDED only sweetly! You'll feel the absolute power and technique of the one great pianist. However, the really great thing is, you can feel his lyricism at the same time! p.s. The greatest album I'd ever seen before this one was Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert. And now I dare to say Chucho is more than Keith. Sorry, Mr.Jarrett....But that's the truth, I can't help it.

Sheer Brilliance.......2006-12-17
Omar Sosa, Cuban jazz pianist extraordinaire, here records his finest disc to date, surpassing, unbelievably, Mulatos and Pictures of Soul.
Everything comes together for him here serendipitously: right players, right program, right tunes, right venue.
Over his decades-plus career, Sosa has as often recorded live dates as studio sessions. Here, he's live in the studio, perhaps his ultimate venue. He's got on board both familiar players, Steve Arguelles (drums) and exotic ones--Miguel "Anga" Diaz (percussion); Childo Tomas (electric bass, m'bira, vocals); and Luis Depestre (saxophones and minor hand percussion). He's recorded both new tunes ("Metisse," "African Sunrise," "Paralelo," and "Muevete En D") as well as selections off his spectacular recent release, Mulatos ("Nuevo Manto," "Dos Caminos," "Iyawo," and "El Consenso").
What stands out to me most, besides the seamless integration of previously heard Sosa gems with intriguing new tunes, is the entirely remarkable playing of electric bassist Childo Tomas. First off, he achieves an incredibly deep and Sehnsuct-laden approach on e-bass, rendering a depth and gravitas to these proceedings that situates them in the precincts of unfettered gloriousness. Second, his vocal stylings lend huge force and authenticity to this remarkable music.
Next, one notices the brave contributions of late percussive genius Miguel "Anga" Diaz. One can hardly imagine this altogether transcendent disc without his participation.
Third, saxophonist Depestre mightily impresses. A name new to me, he seems to have this incredible ability to situate his statements exactly in the center of whatever mood leader Sosa evokes.
But the real revelation here is Sosa himself. His remarkable solo ruminations on "Dos Caminos" are worth the price of admission. Beyond his spectacular pianisms, however, lurks his hard-won yet casually virtuoso approach to his instrument, most tellingly revealed, perhaps, on the to-die-for gorgeousness of his playing on the brilliantly reworked "Iyawo," with its entirely seductive "Guantanamera" vibe, first encountered on Mulatos.
The high point, undoubtedly, is the extended rendition of "El Consenso," clocking in at over 10 minutes, featuring the staggeringly brilliant sax stylings of Luis Depestre, matched by Sosa's ruminative piano.
Without a doubt, this is my disc of the year, maybe the decade. You'd be a fool to miss this one.

This disc is the closest thing to their live show in person.......2001-02-23
I saw the band this past winter in a little jazz club and this is the closest disc to the in person experience that I`ve found yet, out of the eleven I`ve purchased since the show. All of their albums I`ve picked up have been great, but this is the one that captures all the energy and excitement that I had at that show, the people with me at the show agree. I`d say the first couple songs are the ones that stand out but thats until I start listening to the rest.

Recorded in Havana, this is a Santería ceremony to honor and evoke Elegguá. Elegguá is known as a multisided trickster and gatekeeper. A 'güiro', which refers to the shaker instrument also refers to the ceremony and style of music. These events occur frequently in Havana using güiros (also refered to as abwes and chekeres), a conga and a bell (usually played on a hoe blade call 'guataca'). This type of ceremony is very similar to what some call a 'bembe'. This CD is over 79 minutes long and covers the most important aspects of this event. Also available as a two CD set of the entire ceremony.

A major disappointment!.......2006-09-23
I love Los Van Van. However, this CD is a major diappointment. Poor singing combined with poor sound engineering translates into a strong recommendation not to spend your money on this CD. Do yourself a favor and pick another one ("En el malecón de La Habana" is one of my favorites and is guaranteed to get your feet moving).
