If you like Miles Davis and want to know what he did before Birth of the Cool, then get this fabulous and inexpensive box set. From '45-50 we are treated to an incredible chronicling of his work with other jazz greats including Bird, Gil Evans, Sarah Vaughan and many others. I cannot overstate how much I learned about Miles development from this 4 c.d. set- both from the music as well as the excellent liner notes.
You'd be crazy not to buy it.

This box set contains 82 tracks recorded by Miles Davis between 1945 and 1950. Miles' spark of genius was already apparent right from the start, and it's clear after listening to this set why Prestige gave him a lucrative recording contract which he would fulfill from 1951-1956 on his way to super-stardom. His distinctive sound on the trumpet is unmistakable here, even as a twenty year old...a sound that would delight the world for decades! This set is solid gold, filled with nuggets of beautiful jazz from start to finish. One thing about the set that surprised me was the number of "Birth Of The Cool" live recordings that I'd never heard before...even though I already own the so-called "Complete Birth Of The Cool" CD. Turns out that set isn't complete at all-this set gives a much more in depth look at these songs both live and in the studio! But the "Birth Of The Cool" is only about 25% of this box set. The sound quality on this box set is great, save for a handful that sound a little garbled but were included anyway because the playing is so beautiful. I like this set even better than the Complete Prestige Recordings box set, and this 4 disc set sells for about $75 less. I highly recommend this set to Miles Davis fans, not necessarily as a first purchase, but I'll say this-no Miles Davis collection is complete without these brilliant recordings! Happy listening!!

I bought this yesterday from a local record store and wow. Man is it good. It isn't hs greatest stuff because he was younger and less experienced but it is still absolutely great.
