Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Following the subtly modern bent of much of The Cape Verdean Blues, Horace Silver recommitted himself to his trademark "funky jazz" sound on The Jody Grind. Yet he also consciously chose to keep a superbly advanced front line, with players like trumpeter Woody Shaw (retained from the Cape Verdean session), altoist/flutist James Spaulding, and tenor saxophonist Tyrone Washington. Thus, of all Silver's groove-centered records, The Jody Grind winds up as possibly the most challenging. It's also one of the most under appreciated; Silver's piano playing is at its rhythmic best throughout, brimming over with confidence and good cheer, and evoking memories of the classic feel of his early-'60s quintet. His compositions have a similarly bright overtone, which was becoming increasingly rare in mid-'60s jazz as the fury of the avant-garde and the Civil Rights upheaval began to seep into jazz's wider consciousness. The title cut is a playful, overlooked classic on the funky side of hard bop; Silver kicks it with a tasty groove, giving the rest of the musicians plenty to play off of. The whole group absolutely burns through "Grease Piece," a terrific hard swinger full of smoking solo statements from just about everyone on down to drum whiz Roger Humphries. Really, the whole album is packed with great grooves and tight solos, epitomizing the best virtues of Silver's music. The Jody Grind is one of the best Horace Silver records, highly recommended.

The Jody Grind.......2005-09-29
Silver leads a first rate ensemble here and his composition work is excellent.
Grand master of hard bop!.......2002-12-20
Horace Silver is in full flight on the "Jody Grind." He is one of the grand masters of hard bop, and it is little wonder that so much of his music has been used in "acid jazz." Silver has had a very prolific career, starting with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and evolving into one of the prime figures in jazz. Silver draws from a wide variety of sources, but lurking in the background seems to be his Cape Verdean roots. There is a loose quality to his music that is very appealling, and it is so easy to be drawn into his sinuous sounds.
Silver's Gold.......2001-05-23
This is the HS album I find myself listening to the most. Its funky, infectious groove belies the rhythmic and melodic complexity (par for the Silver course, but even more so on this album). It's both energetic and complex, which explains Silver's success with critics and novice jazz lovers alike. If, like me, you grew up with Charlie Brown specials on TV, and your appreciation of jazz began with the music you heard there (Vince Guaraldi, God rest his soul) then this album will knock you out. It practically defines the "hard bop" sound. Do your soul a favor and get this album.
Sterling Silver.......2000-07-16
Silver's bands, like Art Blakey's, served -- and is still serving -- as one of the great training grounds for young jazz musicians in the '60s. "The Jody Grind" features a youthful Woody Shaw joining his brash trumpet sound with the fiery James Spaulding on alto and flute and the forgotten (unfortunately) Tyrone Washington, who contributes a hard-edged tenor. Silver, as usual, composed all the tunes, and nearly all of them are memorable.
Silver is a master at stripping melodies and rhythms down to their essentials. But that doesn't mean that his tunes are simplistic. For example, the great "Mexican Hat Dance," as the title suggests, cooks up a spicy Latin beat that is very hummable. After you listen to it a few times, though, you realize that the infectious melody is composed of some tricky twists and turns that the horn players negotiate flawlessly.
In fact, Silver makes it look easy on the whole release, effortlessly spinning off melodies and riffs in his soloing and catching you with an irresistible hook on every tune, from the funk of "Grease Piece" to the elegant sophistication of "Blue Silver." Forty minutes go by in a flash.
The entire band responds eloquently under Silver's leadership. In fact, another major strength of the release is the contrast of sounds in the horns. Shaw is hard-edged and fluid on trumpet; Spaulding edgy on alto and mellow on flute; and Washington digs deeply into the hard bop bag with a soulful tenor.
All of Silver's Blue Note work is worth owning, but "The Jody Grind," for my money, represents one of his most consistent and satisfying efforts. Highly recommended.
Last one from a great era.......2000-01-17
John Fordham's review above really doesn't do justice to this recording. The classic Silver quintet sound is there, Van Gelder got one of the best drum sounds ever on this session, it's an early recording by the late trumpeter Woody Shaw, and half of the tracks add a third sax/flute from Jimmy Spaulding, who gives HS a chance to write richer front-line harmonies. There's no "Sister Sadie" here, but there's enduring enjoyment instead -- I wore out my original LP copy. With his next albums, HS began moving away from the tight group sound which served him so well in the 50s and 60s, so this one is really the last of its kind.

Jody Grind rocks.......2005-01-17
This cd is the most listenable, likeable cd I own (and I own a couple thousand). I keep myself from listening to it too often because I might burn out on it which would be a shame. I have been listening to it for the past 13-14 years and like fine red wine it just keeps getting better with time.
The music is a twist on 60's style classic such as Dionne Warwick (courtesy of Hal David and Burt) and Dusty Springfield as they provided covers of those artists on the first release.
This cd is a more mature effort continuing the style but molding it around mature themes. The band came to a tragic end in a car crash promoting this cd, but their legacy lives forever in this swansong that is but was never meant to be.
Perhaps less fun than their debut but more to chew on over the years. And it never loses it's flavor!!!!!!

Unknown and Exceptional.......2006-06-22
I was fortunate enough to see this band perform several times - including their last performance the night of the tragic car accident that killed two of the band members. The Jody Grind was all about Kelly Hogan - a singer who deserves much more recognition than she has received to date. While Hogan's later work has been mostly rooted in alt-country, the Jody Grind was eclectic to the extreme - jazz, R&B, rock, and soul all mixed together. To put it simply, if you are a fan of great female vocalists, you need to seek this CD out. While Hogan is best appreciated in person, this will give you a taste. After you've digested "One Man's Trash" be sure to follow up with her solo recordings. Everything she does is worth hearing.
My Treasure........2005-09-30
Sassy, stylish treatments of some classic oldies.
I particularly love "One Man's Trash is Another Man's treasure", "It Aint Necessarily So", and "Peter Gunn".
Highly recommended.
Dates are wrong.......2005-07-28
This album, as fine as the above reviews indicate, came out in the spring of 1990.
a feast for the ears.......2004-08-28
Even though this album came out in '91, I was never exposed to it until '96. Upon listening for the first time, I thought that it was ok...but not what I needed to stay awake for my graveyard shift. A couple of days later I listened again, when I could relax and take it all in, and was transfixed by this beautiful woman's voice taking me away to a smoke-filled jazz lounge. I could almost picture her sprawled over a piano, delivering these delicious jazz melodies.
Since then, whenever I feel like relaxing, I will have a couple of cocktails, put this disk into the cd player, and be swept away once again. I never grow tired of this one.
Voice like the milk of a goddess.......2001-12-12
This is my all-time favorite CD. It's jazzy, smooth and a little torchy in places and sung by a woman with a voice like milk from a goddess. I have almost worn a hole in this disc. I'm not a music critic or even very eloquent, but I had to take this opportunity to encourage folks to buy this while it's still available! This group would clearly have been a major success if the lives of several band members hadn't been cut short in a tragic accident. The world truly lost an amazing group, and all of Atlanta mourned.
