This is one of the first jazz albums I ever heard. I was a younger kid who listened to a lot of punk at the time. As someone who never really listened to jazz, this blew me out of the water.

The music of Rashaan Roland Kirk spoke to me, and though a punk rock kid from the Wash DC suburbs, I "met" Rashaan hearing this. Allthis music, a "dream" came through perfectly lucidly. I didn't get too many friends into this, sadly. Folks I know who have an eclectic taste in music seem to hop RIGHT into this stuff.

His other albums I own are great, too, but I think this is the starting point to pistening to Mr. Kirk.

This is a fabulous concept album that contains great music as well as sound bites. The idea is a dream and the songs are in symmetrical order so as to give a good sense of beginning and end. There are two versions of the entertainer on here that would make Scott Joplin proud. A good buy even if you don't like His Rahsaanness.

Here's an e-mail and a response; PLEASE READ!!! This review is about the label not the recording. IT'S GREAT, GET IT; just not on this label. To whoever it concerns (hopefully Joel Dorn), Just wanted to let you know, if you didn't already, that the Collectables label puts 2 seconds of silence between tracks. I've bought Rahsaan Rahsaan & The 3 Sided Dream and everything has 2 seconds of silence between songs that run on together. This pisses me off as I called the label & they told me that's how they got the master from Atlantic! I've wasted $25 on these & I have to buy them over again as I refuse to make due with these versions. How can a label sell an inferior product? Anyway, I just wanted to let you know and hope someone provides them with corrected masters. Thanks. Dave. Dave, Thanks for writing. First off, you learned the hard way to never buy anything from Collectables. They have no intention of serving the music. It's like a chop shop. Secondly, I'll pass your email along to Joel Dorn, but there is nothing whatsoever he can do about it. He hasn't worked for Atlantic records since the mid-70s. As I'm sure you know, Atlantic is owned by Warner Music Group, which up until a few months ago was part of AOL, and still remains a mega l Dorn is so far off their radar to not even be existant when it comes to the masters they issue to licensing labels for reissue. Even if he were to complain about them mis-representing his original productions, it would mean exactly nothing to them. It's a drag, but unfortunately it's the reality of the it were Rhino reissuing those records, he could have more say, but the licensing to other labels is a lost cause.

This record is fantastic, futuristic and from another planet. Roland Kirk came to us from a heavenly place; his mind provided us inspiration with an amalgamation of sight, sound and vision. Ironic that he was blinded as a child, he chose to provide the world with his type of sound as an image of what was and what was coming. This album does this vision true justice - he grabs anything and everything within reach and uses it like a wood wind instrument attached to his jacket, beautiful and free. Grab "The Entertainer", sounds of a stampede, hellicopters and dropping science on the computer in a pastiche of modern life. Cut and paste at will, expert collage and provide us with the God-like command to "Wake up and dream." Bless Roland Kirk and the gifts he provided.

The main reason I bought this 2 CD set was for the Rahsaan Roland Kirk album "THE CASE OF THE THREE SIDED DREAM IN AUDIO COLOR". This is all the elements of Rahsaan's personality coming together perfectly -the multi-horn playing, the insane,energetic solos, high quality compositions and original interpretations of old standards. And Joel Dorn's hand is heavy in it as well. It is obvious that he truly hit his stride as a producer on this record. This album flows like the combination of a smooth bottle of champagne down your throat and the inevitable vomit that comes after. It's like Oedipus guest starring on the Teletubbies. The range of emotions and sounds covered is like an AIDS quilt and Linus's blanket sewn together. Not that you should rush out and buy this right away. Go check out WE FREE KINGS, and then maybe RIP, RIG, AND PANIC, followed by some of the early Atlantic recordings before you delve in to this beautiful monster. As for the Yusef Lateef disc, it is an insult to both artists that these two were coupled together. Mr. Lateef has made an excellent album that is completely overshadowed by Mr. Kirk's. It is pointless to compare musicians but putting them side by side practically begs you to. Granted, it is cheaper getting them together in this format but it draws away from the respect and dignity (which both men deserve) of standing alone.
