Eric Dolphy was working as a sideman with Charles Mingus when he recorded this in 1960, his debut as a leader and the first masterwork in his tragically brief career. It's a startling extension of the language of bop and an introduction to one of the most remarkable instrumentalists of the twentieth century. Dolphy's originality as a composer is apparent from the opening bars of "G.W.," with its mix of dissonant fanfare and off-kilter melody, while his alto playing is a revelation, a cauldron of snaking lines running from one register to another and liable to dart in any direction. For all his virtuosity, though, it's the intensely human passion of Dolphy's playing that is most riveting, felt particularly in the blues "Les" and "245." A gifted multi-instrumentalist, Dolphy developed a distinctive voice on each of his horns, apparent on the standards here as he plays "On Green Dolphin Street" on bass clarinet and "Glad to Be Unhappy" on flute. Apart from the leader's assortment of reeds, the band follows the format of a standard bop quintet, but the performances of trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Jaki Byard, and drummer Roy Haynes are all exceptional, and there's something very new in the collectively improvised chatter amongst the horns that concludes "Les." --Stuart Broomer

***1/2. Inconsistent, but with some real highlights.......2005-05-24
This is slide guitarist Sonny Landreth's first album on the Zoo label, originally released in 1992.
There are few utterly forgettable songs here, but fortunately they sit next to a handful of charming, eclectic songs which aren't "blues lite", as another reviewer put it...most of them are not blues at all, and they aren't meant to be.
Landreth blends rock n' roll, blues n' boogie, cajun, mesmerizing aboriginal rhythms, and, well, pop, creating a thouroughly personal style. The best songs here are the radio-friendly "Bayou Teche" and "Common Law Love" (which I was fortunate enough to hear Landreth play live a few weeks ago here in Denmark), but the slow, melancholy "Planet Cannonball" and the swaggering "Speak Of The Devil" are also among the highlights, as is Landreth's muscular playing.
Not the place to start, but fans will not want to miss it.
3½ stars.
Highly Recommended.......2004-09-17
If you are new to Sonny Landreth, this might be the best one to start with. Bad Weather, Back To Bayou Teche are fantastic. Sacred Ground, New Landlord, Speak of the Devil, Common Law Love and Outward Bound are very good. One of the best guitar players you will ever find.
Sonny's Outstanding -- This CD Will Stay With You.......2004-08-03
I bought this CD years ago, too, and it turns out that I listen to it all the time! Sonny's not the world's best singer, but he's really pretty good, and each tune touches me at different times. I'm in a band and want to get my mates to do "Bad Weather" or "Speak of the Devil." Sonny's definitely the quintessential sideman, but he can also hold his own as a leader. I'd go see him anytime!
The Guy Below Me Has No Clue.......2004-04-18
I bought this CD years and years ago, and it has amazing staying power. The songs are fantastic (check out "Mister Meet Your New Landlord"), and the guitar playing is supernatural. There ARE lots of brilliant slide guitar players out there, but what sets Sonny Landreth apart is the combination of his great songwriting and killer chops. He'll never be a great singer, but neither will Eric Clapton. It's all about the songs, and that's enough.
Why do all blues guitarists try to sing, even when they can't?.......2004-03-17
If he would just stick to instrumentals then he could be a five star musician. The problem is his singing has no grit, his songwriting is weak and his instrumental breaks are short and infrequent. And, his music is blues-lite; not the real thing. Roy Buchanan made the same mistake of insisting on singing once in while and he succeeded in ruining a few heavy tunes. Landreth seems to be following the same ill-fated road. He even portends his own destiny with "The Road We're On".
But, Landreth has improved somewhat since this early effort. Try "The Road We're On" or "Levee Town" instead if you want to have a chance of staying awake for an entire Landreth CD. There are more interesting contemporary slide guitarists out there, e.g., Dave Hole, Roy Rogers, or just stick with the "old slide guys", e.g., Blind Willie Johnson, Elmore James, Hound Dog Taylor, Robert Nighthawk, Muddy Waters, Blind Blake, Fred McDowell, etc.--they'll never let you down. Even the title song on this album puts me to sleep.

seminal recording.......2007-04-29
"Outward Bound" features Dolphy on his first venture as a leader performing some post-bop works, recorded in 1960 at Englewood Cliffs at the famous Rudy Van Gelder studio. This album was a foreshadowing of what lay in store on following albums released by Eric Dolphy. The alto saxophone playing, bass clarinet donning, flute wielding compositional innovator, who peaked on "Out to Lunch", is heard here laying the foundation for his magnum opus.
Dolphy's alto saxophone was so unique and intelligent, belting out those fast notes in ways only he seemed to comprehend. He has influenced the entire genre of free jazz greatly and continues to do so each time some promising young artist stumbles upon his work. This Fantasy Jazz release of such a seminal and imperative album in the Dolphy repertoire belongs on your shelf, not a store shelf.
Personnel:
Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, bass clarinet, flute)
Freddie Hubbard (trumpet)
Jackie Byard (piano)
George Tucker (bass)
Roy Haynes (drums)
In Green Dolphin Heaven.......2000-05-05
Many times people point to the very last Dolphy recordings ashis best ones or as the ones most representative of "hisstyle". While I wouldn't argue that he made fantastic recordings near the end of his life, don't overlook his "early" gems like this one, OUTWARD BOUND. The crown jewel of this cd is ON GREEN DOLPHIN STREET. Freddie Hubbard uses the mute and gets great tone from it, and Dolphy is on bass clarinet and he gets his usual great tone from it as well. Many people have done this tune over the years but this is my hands-down favorite version. This version just "walks" differently than all other versions I've heard and after hearing this one I realize that this song and the bass clarinet go together perfectly. Dolphy's DOLPHIN playing (and arrangement) alone is worth the price of the cd. 245 has some of the most blues-drenched playing from Hubbard I've ever heard him do, especially the very opening phrase of his solo. I personally still have trouble getting into the flute on very mellow jazz tunes so GLAD TO BE UNHAPPY doesn't do much for me, but if you like that sort of thing he does play well on it. All in all, this is a cd that is well worth owning and it will only add to the reasons why you wish Dolphy wouldn't have died so young.

Customer Reviews:
Another great pair.......2005-03-19
Tom Paxton's second pair of Elektra albums isn't quite as essential as his first (not much is!), but it's definitely a nice addition if you're already a fan. Even if you have the original albums, this set is worthwhile for the terrific bonus tracks.
"Outward Bound" appeared when the folk revival was on its last legs, and it sounds like it. Paxton was clearly trying to settle on a new style here, making for a somewhat eclectic collection - but a very innovative one. "My Son John" (essentially "Born In the USA" 20 years ahead of its time) is not only amazingly prophetic; it was a brave statement to make at all in 1966 and it's still pretty unique in the canon of Vietnam songs. "Talking Pop Art" and especially "Is This Any Way To Run an Airline?" are among the best of the biting satires he's since become known for. There is also plenty of what made his first two albums great: "Leaving London" and "One Time and One Time Only" are another great couple of love songs. "Don't You Let Nobody Turn You 'Round" may have missed the boat by a couple of years on the golden era of protest songs, but it's one of his best nonetheless.
"Morning Again" is somewhat poppier than its predecessor, but still definitely a product of the folk movement. "Jennifer's Rabbit" is an early example of Paxton's knack for children's songs that also sound great to adults, but the album as a whole is a pretty dark one. "Mr. Blue" is a rather cryptic take on paranoia, set to an ironically poppy beat. "Victoria Dines Alone" and "Clarissa Jones" are ambitious character sketches that should appeal to fans of later singer-songwriters. But the album's darkest and most accomplished moment is "Now That I've Taken My Life" a look at what Paxton calls "a case of moral suicide." You need to hear this one yourself to appreciate it.
The bonus tracks include the contents of a long-ago, British-only EP. The buried treasure of this bunch is "Beau John," a sweeping epic of black oppression in America, set to the tune of "John Hardy." Paxton refers to it in the liner notes as "just experimenting," but it's among his very best efforts. Also included are two recordings (one acoustic, one electric) of his classic "The Marvelous Toy," which rarely turns up on his own albums for some reason.
Here's hoping this means Elektra will also reissue the magnificent "Tom Paxton 6" sooner rather than later!
