5 out of 5 stars Just Beautiful Singing.......2004-06-26

Marlena's newest release is simply divine. A mixture of simple yet interesting arrangements (trio and sometimes percussion)and excellent songs produce Marlena's most relaxed vocals in years. On this album she doesn't shoot the sparks that she can but opts to just lay back and let her unique phrasing and sense of time do their thing. She's been around long enough to know that great songs can just be sung and if the vocalist has the ability you will get something like this!
'Hope In A Hopeless World' is an instant classic. I'm not sure if it was done before but Marlena makes it hers. The lyrics coupled with Hazeltine's play (note the fitting Stevie Wonder tune after the bridge) give Marlena a great base to just go. 'NY State Of Mind' is given a mid-tempo treatment and Marlena just glides right on. Marlena takes the classic 'For All We Know' and makes you glad she did. 'Just The Two Of Us' is a highlight even on this stand-out album. 'Everything Must Change' reunites Marlena with Bernard Ighner who wrote much of her classic 'Who Is This Bitch' album. That she is finally recording his most noted song is a surprise but that she does such a (I'm running out of superlatives) great job isn't. 'Here's To Life' is my total favorite on the album- It's just an awesome song, lyric, arrangement and vocal combination. 'Easy Living' is sublime. 'Mercy Mercy Mercy' is Marlena revisiting her first hit and I'm glad that she finally put it out where everybody can here it!
'What A Wonderful World' makes you glad that it is a world that has Marlena Shaw! 'Sweet Georgia Brown' lets Marlena flex her bop chops. 'You Don't Know What Love Is' is an excellent finishing touch to this flawless performance.
The attitude of this album is so laid back and comfortable yet has all of Marlena's jazz elements that I readily put it up as one of her best. To sing this effortlessly and well is the sign of a singer that KNOWS HOW TO SING AND FEELS IT! I hope this album gets her her just notice and I feel is Grammy worthy!

4 out of 5 stars BW goes CW.......2007-05-14

The combination of these two original vinyl albums on one CD is a real treat. Bobby Womack is truly a great soul artist, and both these albums have some great recordings. Womack is one of the few musicians who can blend soul and country music in an authentic way. Add to this the fact that he is a masterful singer and the result is a CD that begs to be heard by a wider audience. Ironically this has been Womack's biggest problem. He is such a "natural" musician that whenever he tries to go commercial it fails completely. He may not have got the big bucks like those he influenced(ie The Stones!)but I am sure his fans appreciate the great music he has given us over the years. Those who like him, like him alot.

4 out of 5 stars THE UNDER-RATED: "MERCHANT OF SOUL".......2003-03-06

WHILE THIS CD HAS SOME OF BOBBY'S GREATEST WORK..YOU STILL SHOULD CHECK OUT NOT ONLY HIS LATTER WORKS...BUT ALSO CHECK OUT HIS YEARS WITH "SAR" RECORDS 1959-1964. I BELIEVE BOBBY REALLY ENJOYS BEING AWAY FROM THE LIMELIGHTS. WHILE HE'S A DAMM GOOD SINGER...IT'S MY TAKE, HE'S NOT A MASTERFUL SHOWMAN. BACK IN THE 60'S, YOU HAD TO BE ABLE TO SING, DANCE AND ENTERTAIN. HAD BOBBY BEEN ABLE TO DO SPLITS, BOO-GA-LOO OR DO THE PHILLY-DOG, HE COULD HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED AS A BLACK MAN, WITH A HEART TO SING INCREDILBLY WELL...INSTEAD OF A COMMERCIAL SALES VEHICLE, ON WHICH RECORD COMPANY EXEC COULD SEND THEIR KIDS TO COLLEDGE WITH! I ENJOY HIS "MORE THAN I CAN STAND" HOWEVER, MY FAVORITE WAS: THE ORIGINAL "LOOKING FOR A LOVE" NOTWITHSTANDING: (NO MATTER HOW HIGH I GET) I"LL STILL BE LOOKING UP TO YOU!! THE BROTHER IS JUST GOOD!

4 out of 5 stars Gonna Catch Me Up Again.......2002-09-18

This is a good one-disc introduction to Bobby Womack. "Midnight Mover: The Bobby Womack Collection," with liner notes by the late Robert Palmer, is a more comprehensive two-disc set that gives recording dates, personnel, discography, none of which is given here. Plus the cover art is lousy. Still, not a bad place to start. Bobby Womack is a curious figure--his contributions to soul music are great, yet I think the main reason for his relative lack of success, and relative obscurity (compared to the soul musicians everyone knows, like Redding, Pickett, Green and Franklin), has something to do with his eclecticism, which isn't necessarily always a good thing. In other words, he has tried a lot of different things but somehow or other hasn't always put his stamp on them. I myself like stuff like "You're Welcome, Stop on By," "Across 110th Street," "Arkansas State Prison," and the song I consider his masterpiece, the awesome 1975 recording "Daylight," one of the most atypical soul recordings ever, and a genius song. "It looks like daylight is gonna catch me up again/Most people are getting up when I'm just getting in." Great. His later stuff like "The Poet" has its moments but doesn't really compare to his classic work of the late '60s and mid-'70s.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SOUL MUSIC.......2000-05-02

Bobby Womack is a Very Soulful Artist. His Voice&Guitar Playing are Timeless.Across 110th Street will send chills thru you.Harry Hippie&Nobody wants You when Your'e down&out are the cuts.Very Essential.

4 out of 5 stars solid, if paltry, one disc collection.......2000-01-19

Undoubtably, had I known that a two disc retrospective was available, it would have been worth the extra $$, but this is a very nice collection. It's only 14 songs - it's too bad that Razor & Tie couldn't have made it a 20 song collection.

Anyway, this guy has to his credit writing many great songs and playing a great guitar for Wilson Pickett, among others. His own recordings may not be up to the Pickett records' standard, but certainly worth a place in any serious soul music aficiando's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Late Night Love Music.......2004-06-23

Marlena's latest release is simply beautiful. A mixture of simple yet interesting arrangements with a trio and sometimes percussion, excellent songs produce Marlena's most relaxed vocals in decades. On this album she doesn't shoot the sparks that she can, she opts to just sit back and let her unique phrasing and time do their thing. She's been around long enough to know that great songs can just be sung and if you're comfortable with the song, the results will be special.
The music starts with "Hope In A Hopeless World". It has great lyric and the Stevie Wonder reference after the bridge drew chuckles for it's pertinence to the song. Marlena sounds divine!
"New York State Of Mind" is given a nice mid-tempo treatment and Marlena glides right through. "For All We Know" is one of my all-time favorites and Marlena keeps it there- She's great with ballads and even with all of her vocalisms, never over sings. "Just The Two Of Us" is so fresh with a new tempo and Marlena just makes you feel every word! "Everything Must Change" is Marlena doing Bernard Ighner (who played a major hand in her other classic "Who Is This Bitch?")- It's fabulous. "Here's To Life" would be worth the price of the album, even if the rest weren't this good. "Easy Living" is just oh so nice. "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" is Marlena revisiting her first hit from the 60s and she has now recorded it for new listeners- We're glad she did.
