The 1960s-era British free-improvisational scene had the beauty of showing only scant recognizable "jazz" elements. Musicians could play in abstract suspension of melodies for hours on end. Norma Winstone got her stripes singing in that realm, spilling wordless sounds that intensified the nonjazz elements. It's surprising, then, that this set of duo performances between Winstone and pianist John Taylor has such swing to it. "I Loves You, Porgy" is gently lyrical, with a level of excitement that gains with every degree of measured nuance Taylor sheds on piano and Winstone spoons out in her curvy, cooey voice. This is a surprisingly excellent blend of tunes, with the Gershwin nod shining brightly enough to make Tony Coe's "Tango Beyond" and Kenny Wheeler's "Everybody's Song but My Own" sound comfortably familiar to jazzoids who've never even heard of the composers. For those who recall fondly Winstone's more ethereal stylings, those are also all over this recording, with the colors and shapes she's created for so long simply reaching around traditional lyrics and giving them new flight. In the mid '60s, Norma Winstone was part of the British avant-garde. She blended her tone into the band, singingcool, wordless vocals in ensembles such as the trio Azimuth. On her newest recording, a duet with pianist John Taylor titled Like Song, Like Weather (Koch Jazz), Winstone delivers songs in chilling, vibratoless style, this time with a focus on lyrics. "If I'm singing words," she says, "I really do want them to come out. So I tend to be a little careful so they're heard because sometimes words get swallowed in the emotions of the moment."

Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. In all, the soundtrack's pleasing variety of Eastern music mirrors the film's old and new worlds living within a singular culture. --Bryan Reesman

I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!

The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.

This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!

I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.

I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."

Culture-Happy-Dance-Reflect-Appreciate-Savor-Relax-Laugh.......2006-11-06

Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

What an incredible recording! What energy, what a fantastic voice! The songs, many of which are rarely recorded, are presented in a wonderful upbeat and stylish mood. It's almost impossible not to love this CD. Her tributes to the greats of the silver screen are very witty and yet not overly campy. Judy manages to almost one up Carmen Miranda, with her Carmen Tribute. I must say I never really liked the song "Thanks alot, but no thanks" until I heard Judy's version. This CD will leave you exhausted but with lots of happy memories. It will also leave you wishing that Judy Kaye recorded more often!!

Superb Operetta Collection.......2006-09-12

Surely this must be the finest collection of songs in Enlgish from operettas and early 20th century musicals available anywhere. Marilyn Hill Smith is in fine voice and is admirably partnered by baritone Peter Morrison. This two CD collection is truly a 'treasure.' It belongs in the collection of any English speaking lover of operetta.

PURE GOLD! GLORIOUS SINGING, GLORIOUS MUSIC!.......2001-06-13

I first fell in love with this collection when I checked it out at the library as "Treasures of the Operetta". Two more CDs followed--"Treasures of the Operetta II and III." I was not prepared for the impact these exquisitely crafted recordings would have on me.

I have long had a love of operetta but found that there were not a large number of recordings to be found in that genre. So much the happier was I for discovering this diverse collection of operetta standards. True serendipity!

Marilyn Hill Smith and Peter Morrison deliver thrilling renditions of the operetta masters. We hear selections from Johann Strauss, Lehar, Kalman, Herbert, Oscar Straus, Millocker, Messager, Stolz and Tauber, to name a few. There are the often sung showpieces and lesser known songs which are blended well and add diversity. One glorious song sets the stage for the next.

With Miss Smith's crystal, velvety soprano and Mr. Morrison's rich, romantic baritone, the production leaves nothing left to be desired--except for more of the same musical charm.

Intimate, lovely stuff.......2003-08-09

Another winner from Winstone & Taylor. As review says, not as 'ethereal' as the Azimuth work, but still some wonderful moments. Besides the ones others have mentioned, I also
really love her take on "Alice in Wonderland"-- a bit 'meatier' than Blossom Dearie's version, and a gorgeous reading of "I Loves You Porgy" (honest!). And "Ladies in Mercedes" adds a fun element. Great duo album-- a desert island
disc for me :)!

More Standards from Norma.......2000-07-08

Here's another fine outing from Norma Winstone with pianist John Taylor. On "...like song, like weather" Norma sings the works of Ellington, Gershwin, Brubeck, Bley, Wheeler and others. For me , her version of the LaTouche/Moross tune "Lazy Afternoon" is worth the price of admission.( Don't miss the Blue Note recording "Basra" by Pete La Roca for the same tune performed in 1965 by Pete with Joe Henderson, Steve Kuhn, and Steve Swallow. Very nice!) The Kenny Wheeler tune "Everbody's Song But My Own" is another favorite of mine. Norma and John sound real fine again. Who's surprised? And if you like this you may want to look for the triple CD set of the works of Azimuth ( not Azymuth! ) on ECM at something of a bargain price. I recently bought this and have been very happy re acquainting myself with Azimuths' early works.
