Like other jazz fusion heroes from the 1970s who haven't succumbed to smooth jazz, Jean-Luc Ponty incorporates elements from the acid jazz and drum 'n' bass scenes in Europe. With his first studio album in seven years, there's evidence that the French violinist may have been hitting the Paris nightclubs during his time away from the studio, specifically on the tracks "Signals from the Planet Earth" and "The Infinite Human Caravan." Only the opening track harks back to Ponty's self-absorbed period in the '80s, when his computer work overshadowed his violin playing. On the other two tracks, we get just his instrument and machines. Ponty seems to have matured into a programmer who won't let the computer take away from his status as a world-class violinist--good news, certainly, for his fans, who'd much rather hear his sterling electric violin. While Ponty works here mostly with a bassist and two percussionists, pianist William Lecomte makes his presence known with solid solos on two selections, and fretless bassist Guy Nsangue Akwa shines throughout. Life Enigma is easily Ponty's best album since the string of records he made for Atlantic ended 20 years ago. --Mark Ruffin

How to win a job.......2006-06-12
Leonard does a wonderful job introducing each excerpt by describing common mistakes made on each piece in auditions and how to avoid them. Also gives advice on tempos, bowings, and fingerings. A wonderful resource, even for noncellists. I'm a bassist and have found many helpful hints to fix problems. A must have for any cellist or bassist hoping to give better auditions and even play better in an orchestra on these common excerpts.

jean luc ponty's best!!.......2007-03-16
I've been a fan of ponty since the late seventies from wrvr in new york.
This is his best and for jean luc, a peerless musician, that's saying quite a bit. All the tracks are absorbing but the best on this cd are signals from planet earth, firmament(my favorite), even the sun will die
(my second favorite), love at last sight, and life goes on. He usually has dramatic depth coupled with a sense of triumph or transformation in the same piece. I can listen and appreciate music like this as I listen with my life experience and my being, not just intellectually with my ears.
Life Enigma.......2007-03-16
Not my favorite Ponty, but good nonetheless. Even The Sun Will Die is my favorite track followed by And Life Goes On. Great for a lazy day around the house or for a long drive.
Stunning.......2003-08-23
Welcome back, Jean!
A long-time fan from the days of Upon the Wings of Music, Jean-Luc drifted away from me about the time of Open Mind, as he drifted away from his primary instrument, the violin. With this, his most recent studio effort, and Live at Semper Oper, his most recent live release, we have reconnected.
Life Engima combines the best of Jean-Luc's lyricism on the violin, and his keyboard sequencing from The Gift of Time period, into a seamless, soaring sonic wall of music that is truely transcendental.
I have been playing this disc about two weeks now. Its melodies are haunting and it grows on you. Fans who, like me, loved Jean-Luc's soaring melodies from Aurora, Enigmatic Ocean, Cosmic Messenger are going to fall in love all over again.
Too Smooth.......2003-08-12
Too smooth. It almost puts you in a trance. I've had this CD for over a year, and I still can't recall one song by it's title. The music is good. The songs probably would have been allot better had they not been on the same CD. To much of the same thing can be bad no matter how good it is. I'm a long time Ponty fan going all the way back to his days with Zappas'Mothers oF Invention with George Duke. The one thing Ponty was never guilty of is sameness.
World class musicianship-The Discerned Should Not Apprehence.......2003-08-01
The first three tracks offer up a plethora of JLP's craftwork and the band intertwine seamlessly.Great speakers make the listen superb! Just warming up he goes right into some old school,fusion-like jazz and on the title track he brings on the mellow organ and strings. He has his own studio and you might think by now he would use some bells and whistles but JL surges with his pure tried-and-true artistry and the last track reminds me of a Brazillian affluence. I listen to this frequent and repeatedly. Oh and---they've come a long way here! I bought my copy USED so the price was very right, I'm VERY PLEASED as YOU WILL BE with the purchase of "LIFE ENIGMA." p.s. I want to hear JLP and STING perform collaboratively and I long for both instruments to be prommenent.

The Johnnys:
Spencer P. Jones-guitar, voc / Paul "Slim" Doherty-guitar / Graham "Hoody" Hood-bass, voc / Billy Pommer Jr.-drums / Bruce Allen, Andrew Ross, Tony Allalsis, Ross Wilson-backing voc
Very cool Australian cow punk band; The Johnnys. Described as Johnny Cash meets The Sex Pistols, The Johnnys had a country rock sound with elements of punk included in it. There are 11 tracks on here including (Theres Gonna Be A) Showdown (more similar to The New York Dolls version than the original). Great stuff! This LP features an awesome cover that still has the shrink (not sealed) on it with the original label stating what the critics say.
Customer Reviews:
Defies genres - does NOT sound like 1986!.......2007-06-14
The Johnnys are amazing, period. For 1986 this is even more amazing! For the most part, you wouldn't know it - they were ahead of their time. I know nothing about them other than what's on this cassette/CD, but I love it.
The Sound: This music defies genres - it has elements of Western, Rock, Punk, and Rockabilly all wound into a tight, clean sounding little package. At times it reminds me of Drivin and Cryin and other times the Kinks, but with that old western sounds infused into the songs! That sounds weird, but it's VERY cool and very different. It's kind of like when the Blues Brother did Rawhide at the country bar - a lot like that, actually - Western, but I wouldn't say "Country Western" - It's not twangy. I hate twangy. :-)
(There's Gonna Be A)Showdown - ok song, I wouldn't have opened with it, but it's kinda catchy. Written by someone else - (Gamble/Huff).
The day Marty Robbins Died - WOW! Awesome song - great lyrics, too. It's worth buying for this alone! Kinda makes you picture tumbleweeds with that slow rolling guitar. He mentions the Grand Ol Opry in the sky for Marty, I liked that.
Injun Joe - GREAT song - VERY catchy. Don't mess with the fist of God ;-) Great lyrics - maybe this is somew kind of legend, not the IJ from the Tom Sawyer story, though.
Move it - very fast and rockabilly/punkish - I can't understand a word he says in this one other than Move It, but it's a great tune! Written by (Samwell) - not in the band. Remake?
The Edge of Death - Ok song, mid-pace - album filler type song :-) Still ok, tho. I like this one the least.
Green Back Dollar - Remake of the Hoyt Axton classic - VERY good song - super catchy.
Bleeding heart - Excellent song - flows very well after the last one.
Way of the West - kind of like Edge of death, but better! - VERY cowboy and upbeat. Even a few h'yeahs!
Deadmen From Boot Hill - Love the guitar in this one - a vocal pedal or something is used and it's a little haunting & echoy.
Slip Slap Fishin - Sounds stupid, but it kind of jammy and fast - hard to understand what they're saying and most of the lyrics are printed in the cassette - some are silly and some are really, really good(not included are showdown, Move it, and Green Back Dollar which were written by other people/bands)
Mountain Man - This one almost reminds me of surf music! Kind of strange, but cool.
There is always going to be some filler - especially back in the day, but the filler isn't bad and the good is REALLY good. I love the rolling Guitars and the voice fits the music. The singer sounds familiar, but I can't quite place him. It's a little like Kevn Kinney style wise, but not as nasal.
I found this on cassette way back when and I wore it out! I recently learned that this was released on CD in Austrailia and can be gotten very reasonably (under 17.00 us including shipping - ebay) - I've checked over the years and have never been able to find the CD, so this made my day!
This is one of those "Lost Gems" that probably would have gotten heavy college radio play if word had gotten out. I'm sorry that I never got a chance to see them live, I bet they would have really been a lot of fun.
