With his flourishes of electric guitar, samplers, and drum machines, Nils Petter Molvaer will draw obvious comparisons to another jazz trumpeter dabbling in dance--Ben Neill--on Khmer. Despite the lineup similarities, Molvaer's sound is unique--samples are used in a subtle, sparse convention, giving this disc a noir-ish feel; beats kick in but never overpower his snaking trumpet solos. Perhaps this disc's secret is the trademark wide-open sound of his label--ECM--or maybe just Molvaer's hypnotic style, which at times harks back to Miles Davis-cool, mystic chamber-music minimalism, and the smoothness of trip-hop. A limited-edition bonus CD contains remixes from the Herbaliser, Mental Overdrive, and Rockers Hi-Fi and is an added treat. In the hands of all three dance crews, the tunes condense, the beats get thicker, and Molvaer's squeaks and solos season the groove. Great stuff. --Jason Verlinde

Album Description

Before the genocide in Cambodia in 1975, Cambodians traveled in and out of France and became very influenced by the western music. Can you imagine music echoed from the Beatles, Bee Gees, Monkees, Santana, Van Morrison, Scott McKenzie, Carpenters, and much more in Cambodian versions and lyrics?! These two collections prove it all with many more to be heard in the future compilation. These late-60's/early 70's era songs have a sound that's completely inexplicable despite the use of standard rock instrumentation and song structures. The blossoming night club scene in the urban areas and loads of bar bands during the '70s brought true music groups together, combining a fascinating and primal version of rock n roll, surf, r 'n' b - sometimes all in one song. We recommend Cambodian Rocks series to everyone! Period!

Cambodian Rocks Volume 1 ROCK! I enjoys the CD very much. Before I knew a fews Cambodian popular singers but after purchasing this CD I have heard more songs and know more name of the Cambodian popular singers. Awesome CD!

4 out of 5 stars Great source for music (before the Pol Pot regime).......2004-10-24

If you're looking for a good feel of Cambodian rock music of the 60's and 70's, this is the CD you'll want to pick up. The tracks focus heavily on Sinn Sisamouth, the Elvis of Cambodian rock, and Ros Sereysothea, the most popular female vocalist. All of the tracks were recorded in the late 60's and early 70's, just before the Khmer Rouge banned all Western-influenced music. As most of the original recordings were destroyed, the CD was compiled of the best quality recordings available. The result is a sound quality comparable to an old vinyl record. If you can get past that, you should enjoy the music. The sounds range from pop to blues to rock. Some songs actually use the music of popular American songs such as Proud Mary and Gloria. So, there's a heavy American influence in the sound.

4 out of 5 stars It's Great! I love it! But..........2004-08-15

The genre of "Cambodian Rock Music from the 60s and 70s" sounds hopelessly obscure, like it's only intended for musical enthologists or ex-pat Cambodians. But that's not true at all - this is happy fun music that makes you want to dance, and you could (and probably will) play it at a party. All in all it was a great music scene that deserves to be explored as much as possible.

This CD has some excellent music, but it isn't at all essential. I found the music on Parallel World's "Cambodian Rocks" to be even better - more of the madcap circle music (missing from this compilation), and much better covers. Some of the rock-standard covers here border karaoke, which the instrumental covers on Parallel World's CD never did (although the absolute lack of liner notes with that CD is annoying).

Also somewhat less-than-ideal with this CD is the track choice, which is split almost entirely between Sinn Sisamouth and Ros Sereysothea - both are well-regarded, but I want more variety in a compilation, and to my mind, the best songs on the compilation are by Yol Aularong. One might be better just buying a "best of Sinn Sisamouth" CD, from the same label. Volume 2 isn't quite as bad in this regard.

So it's still great music. But there's better alternatives, if this is your first go at Cambodian Music.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful rock and pop music from a nearly lost scene.......2004-03-03

A fair number of people may have heard the earlier disc known as Cambodian Rocks (Parallel World, 1996), but Cambodian Rocks vol 1, disc along with Cambodian Rocks vol. 2, are vastly superior. I'm not dissing Parallel Wolrd's effort - that's where I first heard classic Cambodian rocknroll - but this disc smokes! The mix is much better, the singers are identified (and photos included) and english translations of the lyrics are included. This disc is a vibrant mix of both rocknroll intruments and Cambodian instruements into a sound that gets you on your feet and moving. The range of the songs run from pop to psychedelic. The same company has a whole series of discs by individual artists. The whole scen really needs to be documented so we can all (Cambodian and non-Cambodian) can enjoy and cherish the pre-Khmer Rouge scene. Just the soulfulness of the music makes me really wonder what the scene there must have been like. Listening to this disc I know it must have been fun!

2 out of 5 stars Hard to listen to........2006-08-07

I was very excited to own this album knowing that this was a jazztronica album from one of the ECM masters. After struggling to listen to this album several times I have to say Molvaer would do better to stick to the more straight ahead, or perhaps find another producer for such outings.
The electronic textures and ambience are fine, and the playing is nothing less than you would expect. Really it's just the beats that make this album unlistenable to me. Extremely cheesy and extremely cliche. My friend commented to me that it reminds him of a 90's movie soundtrack. I think that's about right.
Molvaer is a great player, but he's a bit out of touch with some of the genres he was hoping to capture on this record.
For jazztronica I would go with Dave Douglas' "Freak In" or the aforementioned E.S.T.

5 out of 5 stars platonic years.......2005-09-22

GENRE: jazz
STYLE: modern, Scandinavian, beat
SOUND: dark, slow, full, spooky trumpet, very ECM, wall of sound
INSTRUMENTS: trumpet, drum, bass, samples, sounds, spatial guitars
INSTRUMENTALISTS: Molvaer on trumpet, Eivind Aarset guitar
TECHNICAL SKILLS: ok
ORIGINALITY IN PERIOD OF MAKING: very original
COMPARE TO: Erik Truffaz, Bugge Wesseltoft, Eivind Aarset
BALLS: yes, but that's not what this album is about(; fith song is called platonic years)
STRIKING: wall of sound, atmosphere, tastefull sampling
WEAKNESSES: no
AND...: Molvaer records his trumpet with a lot of air being blown into the microphone. I don't know if that's the right technique acoording to the musical teachers, but on the album it sounds great. Beats and samples are contributing to the music, when done like this (in the European/Scandinavian way).

5 out of 5 stars Atmospheric mélange.......2003-10-25

Suffused with deep atmosphere, this is a brilliant and seamless mélange of musical vocabularies that broadly expand the jazz palette for an intensely expressive ride. This would likely qualify as an experimental effort if it weren't so mature and fully realized. There are other artists incorporating breakbeats, electronica, world, and ambient into a jazz context, but few creating such an atmospheric environment. And in the electronica genre only the best artists achieve the depth of expression almost effortlessly offered here. Superficially unlike most previous ECM label releases (the label that has so consistently offered uniquely magnificent music for so many years) this is really quintessential ECM stuff. There's a kind of somber introspection throughout the recording, only heightened by the roaring atonality of the screeching guitars and the pounding percussion and bass that drive much of the music forward. Atop this shadowy, ominous, occasionally menacing foundation Molvaer weaves in his trumpet lines, sometimes gentle and melodic, other times fractured, skewed, and electronically treated. The music builds up some tremendous momentum at times, shifting back and forth between this and softer, more contemplative passages. This is fertile ground, and Molvaer and his fellow musicians explore it with confidence and style.

Khmer is intelligent, accomplished, deeply atmospheric and emotional music that forges real and cogent expression from the burgeoning musical vocabularies available to sensitive and probing musicians.

4 out of 5 stars Deep texture that does a lot of sonically interesting things.......2002-07-21

In my opinion, Khmer is a strong, internally consistent, and satisfying cinematically-textured outing.

With respect to Cisco's "attempts" at metaphor, take them seriously at your own peril. "Stock portfolio"/"Realtor"
Huh? As Pat Metheny once said: "not even in the parking lot of the ballpark."

Khmer, IMHO, accomplishes it's themes to good effect. I like a little better what E.S.T. is doing in this area, but all of this genre is producing some pleasing results to my way of hearing.

Khmer has a viable music theory foundation, and it does not stray contextually, mislead, or play tricks. Nils Petter succeeds just fine here. I would say the same about Solid Ether and some of E.S.T.'s recent outings.

Since Cisco is into metaphors here's a couple: Reviews like his remind of a pebble in my shoe. Khmer, on the other hand, reminds me of the waiter at a classy restaurant suggesting tonight's special if you're looking for some adventure and something different from the main menu.

5 out of 5 stars JAZZplosion.......2002-02-11

I have never listened to such kind of music. In fact, I never liked Jazz. Molvaer changed it all. I won't be a great fan of Miles Davis, but thanks to this record I will become more understanding for him. Thanks to this record I discovered the sound of Diane Krall, Cassandra Willson and wide scale of jazz musicians.
Khmer explodes inside your head with enormous energy and passion combined with coolnes of its perfection. Really, this record is wonderful combination of every piece wich is best in jazz and ambient. I recommend it to all jazzmanics.

    4 out of 5 stars Cambodia Rocks!.......2007-05-13

A trip to Cambodia and the sound track for City of Ghosts turned me on to groups like Dengue Fever and the Cambodian Rocks Vol. 1. Vol. 2 doesnt disappoint. It conjures up a time and place that was then wiped out by Pol Pot. There are some great vibes here and anyone who likes the slightly offbeat but great tunes will love this.

4 out of 5 stars Good choice to expand you horizons.......2004-10-24

This album is a great follow-up to Volume 1. It has a better mix of artists. Personally, I like the songs on Vol. 1 better, but you can't go wrong with this one either. The sound quality is similar to Vol. 1 - it sounds like a vinyl record. If you liked Vol. 1 or Parallel World's Cambodian Rocks, then this is a good choice. If you're looking for more music from this genre, check out khmerrocks.com. They produced both of these albums and offer Best Of albums for several artists featured on these compilations.

    5 out of 5 stars High-energy, soulful and haunting.......2004-03-03

Some of the very best rocknroll from outside Britain and the United States. Amazingly vibrant musicianship and singing. Not only does this disc get me nodding along (if not dancing!), but the blending of more traditional Cambodian popular music with rocknroll is so unique as to be breath taking. I get chills thinking about how incredible it is that only in recent years have non-Cambodians had the chance to get to know and love the music of the pre-Khmer Rouge Cambodian scene. and how close the world came to losing all touch with this music due to the insanity of the Communists who murderd as many of the musicians, singers and scenesters as they could because they were too "Westernized". And while Ros SereiSothea (known as the Queen of the Cambodian Rock/Pop scene) and Sinn SiSamuth (the King of the scene) are the stars of this disc, all the singers are incredibly talented. This disc totally rocks, and it is a great way to start your day or surprise your jaded rock scene friends. It blows alot of todays bads right out the water.

The full title is "...Folk & POP". This CD is all Cambodian Rock/Pop music, from the 60's &70's plus some more recent pop which thankfully retains the spirit and flavor of the older stuff. If you like vintage Bollywood, or the 70's Ethiopiques releases you needn't hesitate. This CD is another find for hunters of exotic or quirky fun music. The whole Sublime Frequencies series is excellent, with only a couple of discs that are merely 4 Star, this is one of thier best. The CD is also beautifully illustrated with artwork from the original cassettes. In addition to this disc, there is a seeminly out of print CD titled "Cambodian Rocks" which is even wilder than this one.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing, Savory Stuff!.......2007-05-21

What an amazing product! The songs are uniformly well-performed and all exude a very soothing atmosphere. The music just floats along at a steady pace, with the perfect mixtures of flying flutes and meandering xylophones and gongs. I'm not used to listening to Cambodian singing, but both singers have rather pleasant voices (though the woman is a little tinny.)

I only have two qualms with this album: the undersized liner notes and the short 43 minute timespan of the combined eight tracks. However, these are minor flaws - the recordings themselves are flawless. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Mohori Music!!! Music that Delights the Soul!!!.......2001-05-30

Music recoded and produced by Professor Sam Ang Sam's orchestra is very vibrant and spectacular for sure. I found it very beautiful and interesting to hear mohori music. This has to be the first time that I have actually heard a full recording of the traditional mohori orchestras. usually with most Cambodian music genres and styles I tended to get bits and pieces of it. But this one contains a large collection of music and vocals performed by both male and female. Such sheer talent by the artists and musicians. The musical style is similar to that or pin-peat and is closely related however it's not as heavy in tone because in mohori music it's more sweeter and lighter as the music does touch the soul. I found it very enjoyable to hear this type of music in particular. It's very easy to listen to and I give it the thumbs up because of stringed instruments and flutes featuring the mohori music orchestra therefore the sounds are much relaxed and sounds aren't as tense or heavy as well as not stately compared to pin-peat. Mohori music creates a more folkish and relaxed atmosphere about it as well as the beautiful vocals involved. Sounds are very mellow, subtle, crisp and airy. The booklet is wonderful too telling me what the music is and the titles as well. Also the musicians and vocalists get credit for their part that goes into making this wonderful cd. I hope to hear more of Sam Ang Sam's work and his music so keep up the good work... Great music for sleeping or just relaxing as well as killing time too... I like it very much... so enjoy the music while you can...
