From Jazziz
Like two country kids living out their lifelong fantasy of making it in the big city, Texas-born musicians armando rodríguez, a trumpeter, and victor rendon, a timbale player, deliver a labor of love born of their respect for the vintage mambo-era style of Latin music on Havana Blues (Palmetto). Their augmented Latin Jazz Orchestra, featuring Chico O'Farrill as guest conductor, arranger, and composer, boasts a long list of celebrated participants and a program that combines nostalgia and modern concepts in a winning way. O'Farrill's title tune, a bold, leisurely paced big-band outing featuring a bolero-cha tempo, cascading brass, and punchy sax riffs, recalls the glory days of New York's Palladium and of other '50s dance clubs. Along with originals like Rendon's exhilarating "Blue Mambo" and Rodríguez's exotic, Mexican-flavored "Huachinango de Veracruz," the group tackles Chick Corea's "Guajira," a '60s classic from the late Willie Bobo's band that features spicy Cuban-style trumpet licks from Jim Seeley and vocals by Adela Dalto, and Kenny Dorham's spunky "Afrodisia," a showcase for the band's rhythm section. Big-name guests include bassist Andy Gonzalez, vibraphonist Victor Mendoza, flutist Mauricio Smith, and conguero Giovanni Hidalgo. Throughout the album, O'Farrill's talented son Arturo, the band's pianist, impresses with his lithe and expressive soloing and with persuasive comping.

Havana Blues pairs veteran composer/conductor/arranger Chico O'Farrill with the Rodriquez-Rendun Latin Jazz Orchestra for a second recording of vintage Latin jazz. While there are no surprises, this CD reveals big band Latin jazz at its most exuberant.

Carlos Santana- Havana Moon.......2006-11-11
Excellent!!!, not to soft, not to loud, Carlos had equal parts of his smoother guitar work and the perfect combination of songs. It's the classic rock songs( "Watch your step";"Lightning"; "Who Do You Love" and of course, Chuck Berry's "Havana Moon",And Carlos has a way of sending you off to another place("Mudbone";"Ecuador"; " Tales of Kilimanjaro";"Vereda Tropical" with his Guitar work. There are only two songs done in the typical Santana(the group)Mexican folk feel that doesn't stay in form with the rest of the album "Daughter of the Night"; and "They All Went To Mexico" that just don't do anything for me( not that they are'nt fine songs)...
Over looked and under rated, but not for why you'd think.......2005-11-09
Unable to give this 3 1/2 stars, I lean towards 4. Those who rate this CD low miss the point. They're either unable to seperate Carlos' from his harder edged guitar laced rock music of old, or are "Supernatural" saturated comtemporaries who expect some current flash in the pan "star" to be present on any Santana music of value. Or, they simply didn't notice the title of this CD. I mean to say the song, "Vereda Tropical," is the worst song on the CD because it sounds like a marriacci night club band...um.. eh hem... THE CD IS NAMED "HAVANA MOON!!!" If anything this song is the most definitive- the perfect backdrop to the picturesque Havana Moon setting atop the water at night that graces the cover of the CD. Not to belabor the point, but this is a cover of a classic, old mexican ballad of a broken hearted man singing of his sorrow that only Santana could do as magnificently as he does on this CD. I guess remakes have to be of songs (or even movies come to think of it) that are not even old enough to be redone yet, or of songs so fresh on the minds of contemporary listeners that they even garner a listen. I chuckle at some of the more recent reviews of this album that seem to reak of desperation for the type of "Supernatural" commercialism that only comtemporaries or philistines would expect, indeed, demand of Santana music. Carlos does seem a little indecisive in that choosing, with the first half of the CD leaning in that direction, but coming off somewhat uninspired. "Lightnin" and "One With You," stick out more than the others in a positive light, though "Watch Your Step,' seems to be the type of song Carlos would put out to cater to those who want Santana songs with radio play appeal, with not so defining results (Actualy, the breadth of the music on this CD did put several of these songs on the radio, just not one particular type of station.) But that's where the latter half of this CD picks up the slack. Starting with "Ecquador," Carlos gives us tunes that tilt towards the theme that the title of the CD implies. True, Willie Nelson's accompaniment on "They All Went To Mexico," adds a little country flavor. But the blend of his voice and Carlos guitar gives Santana one of the CD's best songs, if not in his reportoirre. It's a magical blend with a can't sit still tempo that would have even the most reticent up and dancing were it played at a Jimmy Buffett concert, to offer merely an idea of the song's flavor. In between, "Tales of Kilimanjaro, Havana Moon," and "Daughter of the Night" string together one of the best runs of Santana music on any of his CDs, all offering an angle of Santana flavor that his eclectic taste buds have served over the years. If you want "Black Magic Woman" type Santana, buy "Abraxas," or a greatest hits collection. If you want a duet with Michelle Branche, you know where to go. But if you have any musical depth, insight, vision and appreciation for more than just commercial appeal, you might find this CD to be an undiscovered jewel, albeit not without some shortcomings. A number of well entrenched artists have assumed some license in their musical choices. Does one judge Brian Setzer's swing music based on his rockabilly background? Van Morrison's Irish flavored music based on hits like "Brown Eyed Girl? Well, guess what... Carlos is Mexican! Imagine, including a song like "Vereda Tropical" on one of his CDs. The nerve!
Not his best - but pivotal........2005-10-13
This is not by any means the most loved of Santana's many albums and that is exactly why it matters. It is not even available here on amazon.co.uk but luckily I, like several other reviewers, have a trusty vinyl copy to fall back on. After fifteen or so years of "traditional" Santana (and I have most, if not all, of those on vinyl too) it marked the point when he branched out in to collaborations. Maybe this didn't work out or was not commercially successful at first (your choice) but by 'Supernatural' in 1999 the boot was on the other foot. I believe a new Santana album, including a diversity of co-conspirators, is due early in 2006.
I like Havana Moon, for all its indubitable discontinuities of style, but to give it more than three stars would leave me with problems rating many of his other albums. If for no other reason you should listen to this just once to see where it fits in and, who knows, you might just like it!
I Think It's Great.......2004-07-30
Gosh, I bought this when it came out as a vinyl LP--which should tell you how long I've been a Santana fan. I've always thought this was a terrific set of music. Granted, it took me awhile to get used to Lightnin' but all of the other tracks are just first rate. I had Ecuador playing in my head when I visited that country--and Willie Nelson's They All Went To Mexico is just such a fun song that I've never grown tired of listening to it. The final track, Vereda Tropical, is simply beautiful, as is the story behind it. All in all, this is one of my very favorite CDs and think it deserves higher than three stars!
Variety Of Styles,But Still Well Done.......2004-02-06
This Carlos Santana solo album from 1983 has about 9 songs I really like and 2 songs that I hate. There are several guests singers on this cd,but not as many as the 'SuperNatural' or 'Shaman' cds. This cd has a good variety of rock styles,but still sounds good to me. Here's a breakdown of the tracks;
WATCH YOUR STEP- a rockin' remake of a classic song with Greg Walker on vocals. This was a minor hit on album rock stations in 1983.
LIGHTNIN- an instrumental rock/blues tune which is tribute to Lightnin' Hopkins. Well done with good guitar work.
WHO DO YOU LOVE- Carlos rocks with the Fabulous Thunderbirds on the rockabilly remake of a Bo Diddley classic tune.
MUDBONE- A classic Santana sound instrumental that's pretty cool and smooth and heavy on the percussion. This is a tribute to John Lee Hooker with Jimmie Vaughn and Carlos Santana on guitars.
ONE WITH YOU- an excellent slow rock ballad with vocals a good 3 part guitar solo between Carlos and Jimmie Vaughn. One of my favorite songs on the cd.
EQUADOR- very weak short song that is mainly percussion and tribal chants.
TALES OF KILAMANJARO- this song is also on the Santana ZEBOP cd from 1981 which is a classic Santana style instrumental.
HAVANA MOON- A good rockin tune with good vocals and smooth rythyms. This is a remake of a Chuck Berry song.
DAUGHTER OF THE NIGHT- classic vintage rockin' Santana here with Greg Walker on vocals and great guitar solos and rythym.
THEY ALL WENT TO MEXICO- a good mellow southwestern Mexican style song with Willie Nelson on lead vocals.
VEREDA TROPICAL- Worst song on the album. Sounds like a Marriacci band night club lounge song.

One of the greatest "latino" hip hop albums. .......2007-01-04
If you are a true fan of hip hop without the gangsterism or bad boy acts with some latin soul then you should listen to this album. It's got funky beats, mellow grooves, english/spanish tracks. There's something for everyone on this album. I got the tape in 89 and haven't heard it in years but I remember all the tracks on it and it's still one of my favorite albums that most people slept on, probably because it was overshadowed by it's mega hit single Mentirosa. I can't wait to hear it on CD.
SPANGLISH THAT WON'T EMBARRASS.......2004-09-29
Want to find a CD that is full of fresh raps, cool beats, a wide range of samples, and is in Spanglish that you won't be embarrassed to blast out of your speakers (unlike Gerardo - Ricoooooo... Sappyyyyyy)? Then hunt down a copy of Mellow Man Ace's first album that contains the monster hit "Mentirosa" (which contains a sample from Santana's "No One To Depend On" [Santana III/1971] and not "Evil Ways" [Santana/1969] as everyone assumes).

Only 15 years old!.......2007-05-27
Here we are... a new "kid" that is about to take the Blues scene by the storm! I am not joking, Eric Steckel, despite the fact that he is only in his "teen", is already able to leave his mark in the electric blues business. His CV is impressive: he picked up his first Fender Stratocaster at the age of 9 and he reordered his first record in 2002 at the age of 12!! In 2003 he shared the stage with John Mayall and he became the youngest person ever on stage with the Bluesbreakers. Two years later Eric was invited by JM to play in a song of the new Bluesbreakers album "Road Dogs". He has already shared the stage with such greats like Hubert Sumlin, Tommy Castro, Bob Margolin, James Armstrong, Kenny Neal, Joe Kubek & Bnois King. Amazing! Talking about this CD, it has been recorded live in 2005 during Eric's tour in Holland and Belgium. The album starts with one of the best cover that I know of the Freddy King classic "San-Ho-Zay" and continues with the self penned 10 minutes plus slow number "Radio Blues" that from my point of view it is also the best track of the record. Need to be mentioned also the great version of the Hendrix classic "Little Wing". Surely heavily influenced by Freddy King, Eric has the great quality to sound as no one else. He sounds as Eric! His style is very personal and his licks are not the usual ones that you can hear in many other blues CDs. Of course the vocals are what you would expect on someone fifteen or sixteen years of age, however the guitar playing is a different story. Eric already has a maturity in playing that other players will never get in their lifetime! In conclusion a very good album that surely deserves the attention of all the blues fan. I am sure that very soon Eric will become one of the most acclaimed guitar players in the blues business. 5 stars! (maybe 4 would be more appropriate, however considering his age...)

THIS CD PUTS A SMILE ON MY FACE EVERYTIME I HEAR IT! JUDY KAYE IS A MOST UNDERUTILIZED TALENT ON THE BROADWAY SCENE, AND THIS CD PROVES IT. CLICK THIS RECORDING INTO YOUR CART THIS INSTANT!
Pure Energy.......2000-09-17
What an incredible recording! What energy, what a fantastic voice! The songs, many of which are rarely recorded, are presented in a wonderful upbeat and stylish mood. It's almost impossible not to love this CD. Her tributes to the greats of the silver screen are very witty and yet not overly campy. Judy manages to almost one up Carmen Miranda, with her Carmen Tribute. I must say I never really liked the song "Thanks alot, but no thanks" until I heard Judy's version. This CD will leave you exhausted but with lots of happy memories. It will also leave you wishing that Judy Kaye recorded more often!!

Album Description
This is the first new CD of studio recordings in five years by John Stewart, one of the overlooked founders of the "Americana" genre, whose musical career encompasses more than 40 years and 40 albums.
"Havana" features 14 memorable Stewart originals that ponder modern life and materialism ("Davey on the Internet," "Who Stole the Soul of Johnny Dreams"), mortality and existentialism ("Dogs in the Bed," "Starman"), personal and public heroes ("I Want to Be Elvis," "Turn of the Century [Diana]"), love ("Miracle Girl," "Cowboy in the Distance"), and life's cosmic mysteries ("Star in the Black Sky Shining," "Rally Down the Night"). John tackles these issues with unquenched wonder and hard-won experience, a wry cynicism forged by reality but tempered with an optimism based on faith in the individual. The title song expresses John's frustration at his inability to visit the forbidden Cuba. The CD's one borrowed composition is John's version of the standard "Lucky Old Sun," a 1949 hit for Frankie Laine also recorded by Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis and many others.
The CD was produced and mixed by John, who also plays most of the instruments (guitars, banjo, bass, harmonica, keyboards, percussion). His accompanists include wife Buffy Ford Stewart on harmonies and percussion (her backing vocals on "Turn of the Century" make one hunger for the song's chorus) and longtime sideman John Hoke on drums and percussion. Rich, bright layers of ringing guitars, propulsive rhythms, dollops of banjo, lyrics ranging from thoughtful to playful, and John's weathered voice of experience add up to a mature, haunting (but still rocking) high water mark in his lengthy career.
Customer Reviews:
Heartbreaking.......2005-07-01
There was never anyone better than John Stewart. From the first album he did with the Kingston Trio until his voice began to desert him on "Rough Sketches," he wrote passionate, poetic, creative songs and delivered them with a voice that I would have given everything I have ever owned, hope to own, and could dream of owning, to possess. I waited for each new album with more anticipation than I felt at Christmas.
Then I bought and played "Havana." I cried whan Kennedy was shot. I cried when my high school girlfriend said it was over. I cried when each of my parents died. And I cried when I played this CD.
He can't sing anymore. He doesn't even come close to singing. The people who praise this album are worshipping a fallen god, whose fall from greatness they cannot accept. Stay away from this CD. It hurts. IT HURTS!!!!
There's a Reaon Why the Call Him a Legend.......2005-03-02
John Stewart can still pen a lyric better than 99.99% of the songwriters out there. He has the ability to take simple concepts and turn it into profundity. Star in the Black Sky Shinning is a perfect example. Only someone with pure talent, ability and instictively heart wrenching phrasing can turn out a CD like this. The vioce may have changed, but that doesn't detract from this CD, but rather adds to it.
A Music Fan...You just don't get it!.......2005-01-23
Don't give any mind to the negitive reviews of this CD. John Stewart still writes and sings from the heart. People slamming this CD don't understand John Stewart or his music, they also wouldn't Tom Waits. If you KNOW John Stewart music you will enjoy Havana.
great songs, voice gone.......2004-11-20
It is sad to see how much the voice has disintegrated
I have seen John in concert 8 times over the last 20 years.
the last time, the first half of the show was weakly sung, then the last half, as if by miracle was very strong.
on this, the whole album suffers from a voice that is now gone
Some of these songs, waiting for Castro to die, Davey, Who stole the soul of Johhny dreams,I want to be elvis, are among his best, but we will never heard them sung as John could once sing them.
A Vocal tragedy

But that's where the latter half of this CD picks up the slack.
This Carlos Santana solo album from 1983 has about 9 songs I really like and 2 songs that I hate. There are several guests singers on this cd,but not as many as the 'SuperNatural' or 'Shaman' cds. This cd has a good variety of rock styles,but still sounds good to me. Here's a breakdown of the tracks;

Cuban Blues, has come a long way!.......2005-08-19
This is one of the first CD's that blends the true Cuban folklore and the American blues, it's amazing how much both have in common. The compositions are very good; they remind me of a group back in the late 60's and early 70's from Tampa Florida "Blues Image" They were the first to combine Cuban music with the American rock. Also Pablo Menendez (from Mezcla) played with Carlos Santana once, and some of the Santana sound is reflected here. Apparently this is what the Santana Band would have sounded like if they would have continued together! Even Carlos Santana in an interview with the San Francisco Examiner stated that Mezcla was his favorite band from Cuba. Another individual who is bringing Latin rhythms into the blues is John Mayall and the New Blues Breakers Band. Any way if you like to experiment with Afro Cuban Jazz & Blues this is a good CD to start with. I recommend the following bands: Blues Image, Papo's Blues(from Argentina)Rock band, Cubanismo in New Orleans(Mardi Gras Mambo),Charlie Musselwhite(Continental Drifter),John Mayall(Padlock on the Blues and Stories),Benites & Nebula (Night Life),and of course the first three albums(Santana,Abraxas,Santana III) from the original Santana band, you will not be disappointed!

Greatest Afro-Latin Chanteuse of All Time.......2006-10-23
Celia Cruz has a great impact in the Latino community as well as the community outside of it. I didn't hear of Celia Cruz until I saw her on the movie "The Mambo Kings". She is a gifted singer and is respected by her contemporaries such as Cristina Saralegui and Paulina Rubio.
This CD gives the listener an introduction of her musical career and how it has evolved in fifty years; even after death. This is a good CD to start with for those who are interested in knowing more about Celia Cruz and her songs.

Latin Jazz.......2005-04-01
If you are currently in the market for a Latin Jazz CD, you do not need to look any further! This is the one to buy! The songs have a combination of Cuban beats as well as an American Jazz feel. In fact, I had never really been into Latin Jazz until I heard this CD. Now, I cannot seem to get enough of it and being a trumpet player myself, makes me love this CD even more. The way that Armando Rodriguez plays the flugel horn solos and Jim Seeley plays the trumpet solos as well as how they sound together, makes me want to go out and practice some more. They have a way of playing completely in tune with one another.
The percussion section is amazing and has a way of keeping everyone together perfectly. Being right on the beat is very important in a band like this and Victor Rendon has a way of being right on the money every time.
everyone better listen.......1999-09-15
This is the greatest, most authentic, latin I've ever heard. The more I listen to it the more I need to hear it.I urge ANYONE who calls themselves a latin jazz lover to listen. If you don't, your definitley not.
