This CD covers a two-year period in the Jimmie Lunceford band's history, from 1935 to 1937. Perhaps the most polished of the big swing bands with seemingly effortless execution of complex parts, the band had all its key parts well in place at all points. Trumpeter-arranger Sy Oliver gave the band a distinctive, refined musicality--even adding deft, original touches to a tune like "Swanee River"--while Eddie Durham lent the band a riffing style that he would later bring to perfection with the Count Basie band. The band's precision adds a special element to Durham's "Harlem Shout," while his electric guitar is a new presence in the September 1935 session that produced "I'll Take the South" and "Hittin' the Bottle." In addition to providing energizing alto sax solos, Willie Smith is also the band's most engaging vocalist, with a light rhythmic touch on "I'm Nuts about Screwy Music." --Stuart Broomer

When so called "rock historians" wax academically about the birth of the big beat, Bill Haley and the Comets are referred to as sort of a one hit wonder responsible for only one hit. This is an injustice to a very significant and ROCKIN' band. Chester, PA.'s Comets laid down some of the most infectious and exciting music of the 50's. Anyone who has seen the riot footage of the Comets concert that is shown on some rock 'n roll documentaries can attest to the power that these guys must have had live. This is the best overview of this swinging band. Haley came from a Western Swing background and that really shows on these sides. The music is highly danceable and the musicians are top-notch. The Comets are deserving of their due in the realm of all things rock n' roll. Give it a spin!

Don't be fooled by the word lindy hop in the title of this CD. Whoever titled this CD is obviously confusing lindy hop with some other form of swing dance. All of this music is good jazz, but not for dancing the lindy. If you're looking for a CD to get yourself familiar with lindy hop music, with different bands or just to start your collection there's a ton of way better stuff on amazon. Search for 20's and 30's compilations or pick up some Count Basie cds from the 1930's.

As the name implies, "for dancers only" is a great album for those who love to lindy hop, swing dance, jitterbug, or just feel the groove. For those in the lindy hop scene, many of the songs will be old favorites, and others will be fresh additions to your music collection. Trust me, you want these versions of "for dancers only" and "everyday I have the blues."

This is particularly a good CD to get for someone new to swing dancing who would like music to practice to, since the songs were edited to be "dancer friendly." They even include the beats per minute of each song, which is very helpful when you are just starting out.

And for those who prefer to just listen, the musicianship on the album is TIGHT. I mean its got Jay McShann, Clark Terry, Junior Mance, Al Grey and more. Too many "swing dance compilations" feature the same songs and artists over and over. I love Duke, Cab, Louis, Ella, etc, but the music didn't stop in 1949. No wonder people think swing is dead.

This album proves that swing is alive and ready to throw down.

JUST GOT THIS ONE TODAY. MY MOM GAVE ME MONEY FOR IT (THANK YOU, MOMMY!!!) I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO IT ALL AFTERNOON AND AM EXTREMELY PLEASED WITH IT. I THINK YOU WILL BE TOO. SOME OF THESE RECORDINGS HAVE BEEN PREVIOSLY RELEASED ON CD (THE SIBELIUS AND THE HAYDN DISCS ARE THE ONES I ALREADY HAD), BUT THE NEW STUFF IS WORTH GETTING THE WHOLE BOX FOR. THIS INCLUDES STEREO RECORDINGS OF BEETHOVEN 5TH PIANO CONCERTO WITH CASADESUS AND A PETROUCHKA BOTH WITH CONCERTGEBOUW AND A BERG, WEBERN, AND STRAVINKY AGON DISC THAT WAS ORIGINALLY ON WESTMINSTER IN THE 50S. SPECIAL MENTION SHOULD ALSO BE MADE OF THE PIECES BY BORIS BLACHER. NOT FAMILIAR MUSIC, BUT I CONFESS I REALLY LIKED IT IMMEDIATELY. SOUND QUALITY IS GREAT THROUGHOUT THE SET, SOME MONO, BUT THEY ALL SOUND FANTASTIC. IF YOU'RE NOT FAMILIAR WITH HANS ROSBAUD, THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO START.
