It's been suggested that almost as many baby boomers were conceived to the romantic sounds of Johnny Mathis's voice as to Sinatra's--and when you consider that Johnny's Greatest Hits stayed on Billboard's Top 40 chart for 178 weeks beginning in '58 (that's more than twice as long as Dark Side of the Moon, folks!), it's easy to understand why. Sony has used this "16 Most Requested" routine on a number of their easy-listening vocalists (including Sinatra and Andy Williams), but this one is special in that it takes the cream of Mathis's Greatest Hits album and rounds it out with his 1970s take on several movie theme hits, including Love Story and Romeo & Juliet. A truly unique and romantic sound. --Bill Holdship

Wonderful! Wonderful!.......2007-05-10
"The world is full of wondrous things, it's true
But they wouldn't have much meaning without you
Some quiet evening I sit by your side
And we're lost in a world of our own
I feel the glow of your unspoken love
I'm aware of the treasure that I own
And I say to myself
It's wonderful, wonderful
Oh, so wonderful, my love."
One of the most simple pleasures one can have in this busy world we live in - the age of BlackBerrys - is to snatch some precious and quiet moments to go back in time and experience the charms of the old world through this mesmerizing and soothing music of Johnny Mathis, one of my very favorite singers of all-time.
I always enjoy listening to these sixteen most requested songs from the opener "Chances Are" to the final track "Gina." My favorites include "Misty," "It's Not For Me To Say," "Wild Is The Wind," "A Certain Smile," "When Sunny Gets Blue," "Didn't We" and "Wonderful! Wonderful," a beautiful composition by Ben Raleigh and Sherman Edwards, which Howard Garwood singled out on Liner Notes as the song that the "Mathis Formula" was born. And that formula is the mixture of his "crystal-clear diction, the intimate throb that seems to speak personally to every woman in the audience, and the almost ethereal and technically perfect use of the upper register." Amen to that! He said it perfectly. I would add that Mr. Mathis is the epitome of an exceptional singer and he delivers so well in all his recordings.
Listen to this CD if you want to escape momentarily from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In this so very busy world, who isn't guilty of putting make-up on while driving to work in the morning? Who isn't guilty of having breakfast of oatmeal with brown sugar and dried cranberries, banana and coffee while driving to work in the morning? Who isn't guilty of jotting down a list of "things-to-do-today" while driving to work in the morning? Who isn't guilty of making and receiving phone calls while driving? But the bottom line is . . . as long as there's music such as this to listen to, our busy, demanding and hectic schedules will always be bearable.
This is one of my very favorite CDs from my collection. I wholeheartedly recommend it for your listening enjoyment always and forever!
Johnny Mathis Rocks!!!! .......2007-04-07
One of the best music purchases I have ever made. I ordered the cd because I had front row seats to his concert. The music or the man did not disappoint. The cd was almost as good as the live performance!!! Well worth the purchase.
Wowie!.......2007-03-06

Misty is a nice song

Johnny Mathis Memories.......2007-02-14
If you're a Johnny Mathis fan you must have this recording for your collection. As I browsed through the various "best of" cd's this one contained the most past hits I was seeking. The sound quality is excellent. So, purchase this cd, pop it in your player and let Johnny flood your mind with wonderful melodies.
You remind me of my brother.......2007-01-22
When I think of Johnny, he reminds me of my brother Albert who was a dancer and danced all over the world. One day my brother was walking down a street in New York and these people jumped out of their car, scared my brother witless and asked him to give them his autograph because they thought he was Johnny. He told him he wasn't but they took his autograph anyway. Neat, huh?

About as much Andy Williams as one needs.......2006-08-04
Being a Sinatraphile, I don't often like to venture into the domain of other "Easy Listening" singers; I generally stick with the best. However, every now and then I pop in something different just for the sake of variety. If nothing else, it makes me appreciate Sinatra that much more. But I digress. Williams has a very smooth, pleasant voice. He's not offensive, his voice is distinctive, and he has sung some good songs. Besides, he was a friend and supporter of Bobby Kennedy, so he must be a halfway decent guy. This collection is pretty solid: his signature song, "Moon River," is here; "Can't Get Used to Losing You" is a damn fine, catchy tune; "Dear Heart" and "Days of Wine and Roses" are also quite good, though my favorite song on this collection is the beautiful "Emily." There are some standards and a couple I could do without, but overall I would consider this a good buy.
You just don't hear these songs anymore.............2005-07-20
Listening to Andy Williams brought back lots of memories. You just don't hear these songs played on free radio anymore. Now I can listen anytime I want. Great CD!
What kind of singer!.......2005-05-08
When finally you decide to make a personal list of the greatest American crooners in the past Century you must include him necessarily. His voice has a singular style and could to make a real journey from a tour de force song to the most slender song under the moonlight-
Andy Williams will be always remembered due his fascinating charisma and personality. His version of Autumn leaves, for instance is one of the five best I know, but there will be always Williams
Sweet Memories.......2005-01-24
These songs bring back so many memories from my childhood. I remember dancing in the kitchen with my dad while this tape played. Now I'm 17 and we still have the tape. so when I found the cd on here I had to buy it. My favorites are: "can't get used to losing you", "Moon River", "Born Free", "Danny Boy", "Impossible dream", and my all time favorite..."Emily." It was always a special song since my name is Emily. I know that this was more sharing my feelings than reveiwing the cd, but thats ok. I highly recommend this album. Andy Williams is one of the best.
I bought this one because of a dream..........2004-12-02
One night I had a dream in which Andy Williams appeared. It was really bizarre. I was skiing down the side of a mountain with Eve Plumb and I suddenly fell down. I looked up and Eve was nowhere to be seen. Suddenly, Andy Williams appeared.
I asked him to help me up and he asked if I owned any of his albums. I said I didn't. He said he'd help me up if I promised to go and buy one of them. I promised I'd buy one, so he helped me up. Then he and I and Eve Plumb went to a diner and had hot chocolate together.
It was such a weird dream. Usually other celebrities don't appear in my dreams about Eve Plumb. I figured it was some sort of sign, so I went and bought this CD the very next day.

Nostalgia through music.......2007-06-12
The Four Lads were offered songs that I heard when I was in college and you could understand every word. The melodies and lyrics could be remembered almost as soon as you heard them.
I'll take that kind of singing and harmony over any of the offerings of today, all right I'm an old codger but we have our likes and dislikes as do the younger generations. And again those songs were easily singable. 'Nuff said.
For followers of Good Music........2006-11-11
Very good. I would have given it a 5 but my interest was in some tracks that that did not duplicate others previously purchased. For anyone interested in music from an era of great artists - this is one to have.

Four Ladds - 16 Most Requested Songs.......2006-07-13
Excellent music, however I ordered it in error. It is a duplicate of a CD I already own. It was returned for credit.
Great music.......2006-03-09
I'm from the '50's. I just graduated from high school, 1950, and this is the kind of music we went out dancing, romancing with our girl friends. When we danced it was couples holding each other close. Close depended on how well you thought of your partner and he/she of you. People standing four feet from each other, wiggling and jiggling, is definitely NOT dancing!
Having your partner lay her head on your shoulder while dancing is the real thing and this is the music to have playing.

The REAL GodFather of Soul.......2007-01-10
This CD captures the essence of who Sam Cooke was and the intensity of his love for music. Had Sam Cooke not died young, he would have been the GodFather of Soul. Like many before him, he started with Gospel music and went on to mainstream on his own. My favorite Sam Cooke song is "LITTLE RED ROOSTER!"
I highly recommend this CD as well as looking into the man who was Sam Cooke.
Most Requested Songs by Sam Cooke.......2006-11-03
I loved all of the songs on this CD. Every song is worth hearing again and again.
Smooth Satin Soul.......2005-09-19
Sam Cooke was one of the greatest. If you ever had any doubt, purchase this album and you will be convinced. I have been listening to it daily for years
SOUL.......2001-09-27
is the first word that comes to mind upon hearing this set.Sam Cooke lays it on&never let's up.as a Composer,Vocalist He was something else. One of a Kind&this set Highlights His Genius which is a timeless set.
The best available Sam Cooke compilation.......2001-03-19
Now that The Man and His Music has gone out of print, this is, to the best of my knowledge, the ONLY compilation that has Chain Gang, Wonderful World, Cupid and Another Saturday Night, which are in my opinion the four best songs of the masterful Sam Cooke, one of the great musical talents of the sixties who combined r and b, soul, gospel and rock into a unique style all his own. For some reason most Cooke compilations exclude one or more of these great great tunes, and in fact I don't think Another Saturday Night is available anywhere else. Excellent sound too.

Customer Reviews:
Doris .......2007-01-31
This collection has definite 1950's feel to it. This does not detract from Doris Day's great voice and impeccable delivery. There are better Doris Day albums out there, but this is an okay sampler of her range. She can out the fun in tunes like "Love Somebody" and all heart and emotion in other like "I'll never stop loving you".
What would the world be like without Doris Day?.......2004-12-15
No, honestly what wouls it be like? I first started loving Doris when I saw her Calamity Jane quite a few years ago. I am now 14. And it is a good thing I found out about old movies, or else there would be nothing appropriate to watch! And this CD is a great christmas, bithday, or stocking stuffer gift even. These 16 most requested songs are all wonderful. Doesn't everyone just fall in love with her when she very first just opens her mouth?
Sentimental Journey? WONDERFUL! Honestly, Day could sing Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer, and it would be wonderful (though I really can't imagine it). Everybody loves a lover, Love Somebody, It's Magic, Again,...
All of these songs are hits in my own opinion. This is a great CD. And I reccomend it highly! A wonderful album to add to your collection!!
I love her power-hammering riffs!.......1999-07-23
My roomate from two years ago had a cd of Doris; and I must admit, at first, I was a little skeptical. But soon I became stunned by her vocal prowess and the emotional heart juice that she brought to these classic songs. Plus, you should see her in a football uniform! Man can she catch the pigskin.
An almsot perfect compilation.......1999-05-06
Although I must say that this collection does contain most of Ms.Day's greatest hits, and that I was happy that My darling,My Darling (her duet with Buddy Clark)was included--the remixing of the original Columbia master tapes leaves alot to be desired. This is a problem with all their 16 Most Requested series of CD's. Columbia recordings were famous for the use of reverb--echo, if you will--which added a distintiveness to their recordings. Shaghai, and A Guy is A Guy, in their original 45 versions posssed this "reverb" which is missing from the remasted versions--they sound very flat, and take away from the integrity of the originals. I feel Sony should think of this if nay new pressings of these Cd's ever occur.
Favorite Female Singer of All Time!.......1999-02-03
This is the first Doris Day album I have ever bought, though I have adored her since I was a young girl. It is a fabulous collection of early career songs with a few later ones tossed in. I have heard Secret Love hundreds of times, no exageration, and it still brings me to tears. The lyrics are beautiful, but it is most definitly Ms Day's beautiful voice that makes that song what it is, Spectacular! I just ordered three more Doris Day albums. Thank you Doris, for brightening our world!

Nostalgic.......2007-01-05
This cd played some nostalic songs, although it was a gift to my mother-in-law, who celebrates her 90th birthday on 6th January 2007 she was tickled pink with the gift, she has always loved Johnny Ray's style of singing and the message's they bring to those in the his era. I seen him as a youngter at Sydney Stadium and he was dynamic, i recommend him to those with romance in their hearts.
Johnnie Ray--a performer who REALLY knew how to reach people with his music!.......2006-05-18
Johnnie Ray was one of the very few huge stars of the 20th century who TRULY knew how to reach his audience and touch them with his great music. He sang and played piano beautifully--but there was something more. When he sings songs on this CD like "As Time Goes By," "Cry," "Walking My Baby Back Home," and "The Little White Cloud That Cried," I am stirred and I feel excited by his music. There's almost a unique energy and level of excitement in Johnnie's voice that literally begs for your attention and emotional involvement with each and every song he performs on this CD. There's also a very well done duet by Johnnie and Doris Day on this CD entitled "Let's Walk That-A-Way."
The recordings here are mono; but you'd never know it. The quality of the digital remastering by Larry Keyes is excellent and the musical arrangements are beautifully executed. Johnnie voice sounds like he's right there in your living room. After listening to this CD I will buy more of his CDs and I already feel sorry for myself that I never got to see him perform in person!
I notice another reviewer writes that Johnnie is not remembered as well as he should be remembered. I strongly agree. Indeed, Johnnie was one of the first authentic rock and roll artists in that he performed using African American rhythm and blues while accentuating each part of the important words in the song. For example, listen to the song "Cry" and notice how Johnnie sings the word "cry" as "cah-ry." Awesome! Oh sure, Johnnie was sometimes made fun of because of his flamboyant style on stage; but the total emotional commitment he made to all his work could never have been anything except a great asset. His paychecks reflected that talent, too!
The liner notes boast an extensive essay about Johnnie written by Will Friedwald. I learned a lot about Johnnie by reading this; and you will, too! Unfortunately, there are no pictures here. If you want the song credits just look at the actual CD itself--they are right there. I would have liked the lyrics printed out for us included in the liner notes but since Johnnie sings so clearly you really won't need them anyway.
In short, I highly recommend this for Johnnie's fans (obviously) and fans of classic pop vocals. This CD is also a good choice for people who want to get to know just how great Johnnie Ray really was. Johnnie made great contributions to the arts during his lifetime; and this CD demonstrates that nicely.
Where Have Johnnie's Fans Gone?!.......2004-09-24
Okay, this isn't as much of a "review" as it is a general call-to-action directed at Johnnie Ray's fans. It's very sad that with all of the great stuff of his that is currently on a digital format, nobody seems to be buying any of it. His entire career is on compact disc, and yet the amazon reviews for all of his CD's combined amount to a handful. Is it just that nobody knows who he is? If that's the case, I urge all of you, please share this music with people!
There's no excuse for this legend to fade away just because of historical revisionism in the musical community. Get your kids to listen to this, and your GRAND-kids! This man moved an entire generation with his music, and there's no reason that he can't do it again, but people have to learn about him. I know first-hand how seldom heard the name Johnnie Ray is. I myself only discovered him about four years ago when I was in High School.
Through a magnificent twist of fate, I was sent home early from school after twisting my ankle, and while sitting in the car that afternoon (waiting for my dad to finish some errands), I nearly bolted out of my seat as a cool, smoky, and effortless voice crooned "Walkin' My Baby Back Home" from the radio that was tuned in to our local Oldies but Goodies station. It made an instant mark on me, but I still had no idea who this guy was. I had to search the internet for hours just to find information on this amazing voice, and when I learned of Johnnie Ray's tumultuous rise to fame (he easily caused more media scandal than Elvis), it was a shock to find out that this man is practically unknown today.
People, I beseech you, don't let this music go unheard one day longer. It has the power to move young people just as it does Johnnie's die-hard fans. In fact, if you can listen to the Cry-Guy and honestly say that you are not moved by it, you should check yourself into the nearest morgue, because you probably don't have a pulse.
As for the CD being reviewed, it's very good. "Whiskey & Gin" is a hard-to-find early hit, and that tune alone makes this disc worthwhile. It's almost scary how close to Rock & Roll this song comes...especially when you consider that it was recorded in 1951, several years before "Rock & Roll" was to become the new soundtrack to American life. Elvis is always credited as the "first white artist to record in an R&B style", but what most people don't know is that Johnnie Ray beat him by three years! Check out this CD. It'll put a new spin on the Cry-Guy, and perhaps present a few new favorite songs in the process!
The Best of Johnnie Ray.......2003-07-06
I have been a fan of Johnnie Ray since I was fifteen and among all DC I have bought of him, this one is the best of them all. The quality of the sound is number one and the selection of the 16 tunes on it was so well choosen that you get exactly all the songs that made him so popular. I recommand this DC for a gift as well as a personal remembrance.
Little known fact..........2003-02-17
My cousins went to school with Johnny Ray at Franklin High School in Portland, Oregon. It was well known that he was close to being deaf. I find it utterly amazing to hear the music he performed...when he could hear very little ! To me he was one of the better singers in the 50's...

Newark, New Jersey native Sarah Vaughan possessed one of the greatest voices in jazz, an instrument of operatic range. A child prodigy, she was featured singer and organist in Newark's Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She won the amateur night contest at the Apollo Theater in Harlem in 1942, and was singing with the Billy Eckstine band by 1943. Vaughan recorded with Dizzy Gillespie in 1946. By the end of the decade she was famous; 16 Most Requested Songs reflects Columbia's efforts to package her as a pop act. The best moments, such as "Black Coffee" and "The Nearness of You," are mixed in with a program of show-tunes highlighted by "That Lucky Old Sun" and "Summertime." --John Swenson

A Class Act CD.......2007-06-27
This is a great and wonderful CD. Miss Vaughn is sorely missed. This CD is a must/should/better have music collection. It Is Simply Superb!
Disappointed.......2006-06-26
Not the best of Vaughn. Seems to lack her ususal phrasing and style.
Out Of This World.......2001-03-14
Let me tell you. If ever god made anything better than this cd, hemust have kept it for himself, because this is the cream of the crop. If only one of Sarah`s cds, let it be this one. You`ll never get tired of hearing it and eachsong seems to be made to be fitfor her style. This recording is absolutely beautiful. This is a must have cd. Any collection of jazz wouldn`t be complete without it. I have heard these songs performed by many other artists but I like her versions best of all. This recording is truly magnificent!
A Must For Any Sarah Vaughan fan, best place to start.......2001-01-09
This CD is an amazing compilation of Sarah Vaughan's best interpretations of classics like Summertime, It Might As Well Be Spring, The Nearness Of You. Personally, the lady does the best cover of Black Coffee compared to a lot of jazz singers. She is definitely one of the most amazing jazz singers we have ever seen in a lifetime and I would say, she is in the top three for the century.

An honor for a man, well deserved.......2006-04-10
As a jazz great, and a charming singer with a rustic voice, he proved to bring light and joy to the music. His trumpet skills was refreshing and many of the songs have brought tears to my eyes. His range of vocal skills and jazz rhythm has impressed many and one of his vocal artistry in "What a Wonderful World" provides the imagery he captures with his vision of beauty and grace. It would also make a wonderful addition to any collection of Louis Armstrong's recordings for fans who want to re-create the man who had existed not only once, but more than once.

Classic songs, classic performer, how could you not buy this?.......1999-09-06
I love the old-timers, their music and their style! It is an understatement to say that, "They don't make 'em like they used to!" I am an elementary school teacher and I like to give my students the opportunity to sample "good" music while they are learning in my classroom. This music qualifies in that category! That's why I want to make it part of my personal collection!

This is an excellent first choice to get acquinted with Mr. Armstrong and his All-Stars. The tracks are very clear, and Armstrong has some stunning solos. I would recommend it to a beginner. However, I would say that his live albums are a better pick overall. He really goes all-out.
