All of Art Tatum's solo recordings are spectacular, and the 20 tunes he recorded for Capitol in 1949 are no exception. Each piece is subjected to Tatum's unique powers, with sudden rhythmic shifts, florid embellishments of the original melody, and cascading arpeggios that reach for, and achieve, new harmonic possibilities. Whether it's "Goin' Home," by Antonin Dvorak, or "Aunt Hagar's Blues," Tatum recasts his material into a complex, rhapsodic marvel. The final eight tracks are by a 1952 trio. While Tatum's momentum could carry a rhythm section, there's a special appeal to his group playing, a heightened sense of detail and a superbly relaxed swing. Everett Barksdale's light rhythm guitar keeps things sparking and Slam Stewart turns in some of his patented bowed bass work with accompanying humming, creating the illusion of a low-pitched kazoo. --Stuart Broomer

A founding father of electric blues in general and Texas blues in particular, guitarist T-Bone Walker influenced countless blues players and, by extension, countless rock & rollers as well. The Complete Imperial Recordings date from the early to mid-1950s, when the idea of electric blues was really taking hold, and the two-disc set is a wealth of classic songs exquisitely performed. While definitely blues, there's more difference between this and the acoustic blues that predated Walker than amplification can account for; there's jazz and swing mixed in as well, as on tracks like "I Walked Away" and "Strollin' with Bone," and something of that feel has remained in electric blues ever since. From B.B. King to Buddy Guy to Stevie Ray Vaughan and beyond, Walker's influence is felt in the blues up through the present day. --Genevieve Williams

Excellent Blues Master.......2007-07-05
TBone is the best in my book. I like the smoothness of his music. I heard the Allman Brothers state on a live album many yrs ago that "Stormy Monday" was an old "Tbone Walker song." I guess I got curious and bought a casette tape by TBone at the time.... This was when I decided that he is my favorite of all Blues Musicians. These CD's include some of his best work. Glad to find it on CD.
FATHER OF ELECTRIC BLUES.......2006-09-29
T-Bone not only invented the electric blues but he still remains it's most towering stylist and symbol of pure cool. T-Bone's smokey after hours blues is still one of the most vital parts of the genre. Smooth is the key word here. T-Bone's singing and playing never lacked the smooth quality that was T-Bone Walker. He could sing songs of misery and hurt with incredibly deep soul but still manage to keep it cool. This set is a fantastic value! Each track stands on it's own merit. I don't have a favorite here because all are top notch.
You won't be disappointed.
I have nothing but pure admiration for "Bone..." .......2006-05-06
The late "T-Bone" Walker, a pioneering mastre of the electric blues guitar and a close friend/ certainly unremitting influence on my Uncle "Pee Wee" Crayton another "axe-handler" during the immediate postwar era. However, avoiding comparisons, Uncle "Pee Wee" Crayton brought enough "heat" and daring innovation to his playing to avoid being labeled as a mere "T-Bone" copy-"kat."
As a young teen in the early 70's, I was extremely fortunate to experience the greatness of his "vibes" up close and personal...on many occasions, I would soak-up like a sponge and weld to memory those rare meetings when the "Texas 3" (1) Uncle "Pee Wee" (2) "T-Bone" Walker and (3) "Big Joe" Turner (another pioneering mastre blues singer, even though he was born in Kansas City, MO., he sang like he was from the state of Texas...) would get together at "Pee Wee's" house in West Los Angeles, California, and rehearse all day on Saturdays or Sunday afternoons up until the late evenings, just before going to there "gig" at the Perisan Room (a defunct legendary popular "night-spot" during the 1960's - late '80's located on the southwest corner of La Brea Avenue & Washington Blvd., of which now sits a U.S. Postal Station). These Complete Imperial Recordings: 1950-1954 are nothing but short from shear enjoyment fo' da soul...buy the CD you won't be disappointed!
Those were exhilarating times to say the least!

you will be jumpin' and swinging in no time.......2005-12-10
T-Bone sweet T-Bone - he is the founder of modern blues - and I think he does not get enough credit for his influence on jazz guitar. Kenny Burrell, in fact, has mentioned that T-Bone was one of his early influences. He certainly has a sweet tone, and he has a nice voice too. Pair this with a hot horn section, and this cd is a steal at 10 bucks. T-Bone is a classic.
Fine collection of Walker's Imperial sides.......2004-01-22
Not quite as seminal as "The Complete Capitol/Black & White Recordings", this is nervetheless an excellent collection of T-Bone Walker's 52 sides recorded for Lew Chudd's Imperial Records.
Unlike the Capitol and Black & White-waxings, this double-disc set features almost no alternate takes, just the masters and a couple of 78 versions (the only exceptions being a few alternates that have been chosen over the original masters).
And there is plenty of great stuff here...no "Mean Old World" or "Stormy Monday", sure, but a lot of excellent songs like "Glamour Girl", "The Hustle Is On", "Tell Me What's The Reason", "I'm About To Lose My Mind", "Cold, Cold Feeling," and the classic instrumental "Strollin' With Bones".
This music is not meant to be listened to in one long sitting, obviously...even lead guitar innovator Walker's smoky, jazz-flavoured blues isn't quite varied enough for that, and if you're just looking for a place to start, you should go for Rhino's "Blues Masters: The Very Best Of T-Bone Walker", or the excellent "T-Bone Blues" album from Atlantic.
But these 136 minutes of music is a very fine collection for the fan who wants more, and a great tribute to the most influential electric guitar player of all time, the idiom's first true lead guitarist, and still one of its best.

Amazon.com essential recording
Forty-three tracks of the seminal bluesman's recordings for Aladdin in the 1940s, The Complete Aladdin Recordings is a must-hear. Performing alone with his guitar or with sparse accompaniment--usually pianist Wilson "Thunder" Smith--Lightnin' dishes out the best of Texas country-blues. Starting off with "Katie May," Hopkins's first recording for Aladdin, the two-CD set winds its way through the guitarist's years with the label, showcasing what he was up to before his decline in popularity and eventual revival with the folk boom of the 1960s. Those expecting the almost-rock & roll of the latter period won't here any of that here, but they will hear its germination in such rollicking tunes as "Big Mama Jump" and "Let Me Play with Your Poodle." Definitely required, not only to hear the best of early Lightnin', but to hear the best of Texas country-blues. --Genevieve Williams

Great collection, but too clean.......2007-01-31
I love the assembly of songs, but to me they all seem too clean, too tame, and too "studio" ...versions of songs which he did better on other recordings. I have it and I'll keep it, but there are better sessions out there.
From the Cotton Patch to the Big City.......2001-12-08
Learning at the knee of legendary Bluesman Mance Lipscomb, Sam "Lightnin" Hopkins blazed an incendiary trail through the urban Texas landscape.
These early tracks show the base upon which he built through the 60's and 70's. His concerts were often legendary, including one unforgettable night when he played at the University of Houston, on the same night as Abbie Hoffman was giving a speech across town at Rice University, at a far more ballyhooed event.
I know for a fact, because I saw them, and I was one, that most campus politicos chose to attend to Lightnin' instead of Abbie. Us Texans do know our roots.
Unforgettable moments of his concerts included such nicities as his swigging from a half-pint of Bourbon, and playing for as long as the tips came in. Late in the evening, his foot would become loose and begin pounding out the rhythm of the bass lines which his drop-thumb played. And a sly grin would sneak across his life-worn face. This was when he would impart his greatest wisdom to us.
He's a legend who has been missed.
From a man who loves the blues:.......2001-09-03
Many bluesmen have come and gone, but certain ones seem to have been around forever. Their music predates the fancy new singers, and while those new guys rise and fall, the old bluesmen stay the same, unchanged by time and just as beautiful and appealing as ever before.
Lightnin' Hopkins is one of those classic blues singers. Like Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker, and all the rest, Hopkins is one of the founders of the blues - whoever plays the blues today is merely standing on the shoulders of these legends.
This collection of Lightnin' Hopkins recordings is truly worth investing in. The quality of the music cannot be contested, and the enjoyment of listening to them cannot be underestimated. And you can't beat the price! Where else can you get over 40 classic blues tunes for this price?
If you enjoy classic blues: get this album, sit back, and watch the world around you slow down for a while.
An Overlooked Founding Father........2001-07-20
There is a lot of John Lee Hooker here, and a lot of other stuff as well...
There early stuff has the wonderful gritty feel of Hooker's early pieces like "Teachin the Blues," but then the two start to part company.
Lightnin' has an endearing high pitch vocal style that immediately seems wrong for a classic blues musician, but grows on the listener until you cannot imagine the music any other way.
The later recordings make use of fun upright piano and slightly rocky tempos.
Not as earthy as Hooker, not as blue as Muddy, not as orchestrated as B.B., Lightnin has nicely balanced sound that may not always stictly qualify as blues.
Please note: this is a two-disc set! For $12! Ka-Ching.
Blues as personal as a hushed conversation.......2000-05-12
Sam Hopkins was a throwback - a vanishing breed, the troubador, the street musician...and his music was/is intensely personal. Lightning's lyrics and delivery combined with his guitar licks and irregular measures are unique. It's not music to boogie to although I have; it's music to reflect on, to enjoy Lightning's wry humour and observations. Rough around the edges but that's part of its appeal. Most fans will tell you that he was like no other.

Art Tatum The Complete Capital Recordings.......2006-11-23
While there is no doubt of this gentleman's talent, he can twinkle the keys faster than anyone I have ever heard, but after the first couple of songs I long for him to SLOW DOWN. Every gem on this album is played at lightning speed, which while impressive, becomes annoying after awhile. If you want to hear someone play all the old standards at triple speed, you will love this collection. I prefer them played at the speed they were written for.
Some of the best Art Tatum........2006-07-02
Art Tatum is one of the all time greats.
Review of Art Tatum's Complete Capitol Recordings.......2006-03-22
For sheer piano virtuosity, it is unlikely you will hear anything more impressive than Art Tatum. Every piece on this 2-disc set will at some point leave you slack-jawed, amazed that someone could play so fast and yet so crisply. You should be aware that although Tatum was a jazz pianist, these pieces are not funky, improvised jam sessions you can dance to, but are instead fully arranged, classic standards, written by the likes of W.C. Handy, George Gershwin, and Irving Berlin - it's not like your parents are going to be shouting, "turn down that noise." All pieces are Tatum unaccompanied, except for the last eight, which also feature a bassist and guitarist. My only criticism is that sometimes it appears Tatum believed he was getting paid by the note. It's worth noting that a Washington Post music critic considers this one of the best jazz albums of all time.
Musically Awesome.......2005-09-26
The remastering of this Album is faultless. Tatum's performances, especially with guitarist Everett Barksdale and bassist Slam Stewart, re-enforce the long held opinion that he is the greatest jazz piano virtuoso ever. I am personally thrilled since this double CD replaces my worn and scratchy LP's from the 50's.
Beautiful stuff from Tatum.......2002-10-28
Art Tatum began recording in 1932, when he was only 22; though he often worked in groups, the core of his oeuvre is his solo performances. It's deeply unfortunate that his recorded legacy is sometimes hampered by indifferent sound & indifferent pianos, since Tatum had not simply a phenomenally fast technique but, more importantly, a gorgeous sound on the piano; so for me much of the attraction of this set is that it's among the few occasions where Tatum got a great piano & excellent studio sound. Twenty tracks here are piano solos, dating from 1949. These include a rare instance of Tatum's playing the blues, on WC Handy's "Aunt Hagar's Blues"; this is a well-known track among many jazz musicians because it's one of the few Tatum solos to present few obstacles to transcription & reproduction! (See the transcription in John Mehegan's well-known theory books.) Tatum played many of these tunes over & over again--there are countless recordings of "Sweet Lorraine" for instance--& while it's true that he basically stuck to a set arrangement & development for such tunes, no two versions are exactly alike. These recordings don't, I think, quite find Tatum at his best--the 1930s recordings have an extra ounce of razor-sharp precision (a fast piece like "How High the Moon" on here--admittedly a previously unreleased title--comes off as inevitably impressive but a bit sloppy by Tatum's standards). Yet it's hard not to be charmed by his readings of a mostly fairly straightforward pick of standards (only "Dardanella" & "Goin' Home" are unusual choices here), including the gorgeous minor-key essays on "Willow Weep for Me" & "Blue Skies". (Incidentally there's a closing figure on "Blue Skies" which is directly related to the ending phrase of Monk's "In Walked Bud"....which is based on "Blue Skies" of course. So does this mean Monk picked it up from Tatum? -- Elsewhere on this recording there are passages which seem to me to have clearly been studied by Bud Powell.)
To my mind Tatum's at his best at a fairly relaxed tempo, getting deep into a groove despite the abrupt interpolations of cadenzas. This perhaps explains why I'm not very keen on the final 7 tracks here, which date from 1952 & feature Tatum's working trio (Everett Barksdale on guitar, & Slam Stewart on bass). Tatum never felt he had to scale down his style for a group situation, & I've usually found that this leads to clashing floods of notes in the interaction with the guitar especially. But also, the music gets perilously close to mere novelty music in the music-box speed & archness with which all of the tunes are treated (the worst instance being, predictably enough, the jazzing of the light-classical piece "Melody in F" by Rubenstein). Tatum could have perhaps taken a page from Nat King Cole's trio of this period, which used the same format to deliver some incomparably minimalist, cooled-out jive.
Despite this, & despite one other flaw (an irritating background whistle that afflicts a couple tracks on CD 1) this is an essential & enjoyable set of CDs. I rather wish they'd jettisoned the stilted & unrevealing promotional interview at the end of CD 1 (which does little more than name the titles on the disc & give Art an opportunity to plug Steinway), & squeezed this down to a single CD--both CDs just barely crack the 40-minute mark--but the twofer is priced reasonably & this is music that's both immediately pleasurable & worth studying closely.

Customer Reviews:
Eternally Ours.......2006-11-02
I've owned this set for about five years and have listened to it dozens of times. And each time I have, it has been with renewed delight. For the awe-inspiring artistry of a virtual Who's Who of bebop's (no, these folks are beyond genre pigeonholes, so make that jazz's) greatest players under the direction of the peerless arranger/composer Tadd Dameron, but also in the recognition that though every one of the contributors is gone (most for decades) their genius endures in the glorious music captured in this two-disc Blue Note compilation.
Of the many giants represented on this disc, I would personally single out for special mention Fats Navarro, Ernie Henry and John Collins.
Although I can't claim a infallible ear when it comes to blind I-D'ing one marquee musician from another, I don't believe I have never mistaken Fats Navarro for any other trumpet player. It is not in disrespect to any of those mentioned in earlier reviews, all of whom are represented in my own library, that I consider Navarro the most effortless player I have ever heard. To be sure, in their collaboration McGhee comes close to him for sheer instumental fluency (another case of the greatest players making great players even greater?), but in my opinion over the course of his too brief career no one has ever matched Navarro's always smoothly flowing, never strained style. And this on an intrument that seems to this ear notably sensitive to forced tempi, particularly in the upper registers. Over the course of these two discs, his brilliance is abundantly evident, never more so than when he trades breaks with McGhee on the two takes each of "Boperation" and "Double Talk."
Two tunes, by the way, to which altoist Ernie Henry made the solo contributions that led me to seek out as much more of his recorded output as I could find, further leading me to the opinion that his early death (like Fats a combination of TB and smack) robbed us certainly of a superb instrumentalist and on the evidence of music penned for his few albums as a leader ("Meet Ernie Henry", "Last Chorus") almost as certainly of a potentially fine composer as well.
Finally there's John Collins, a largely uncelebrated but excellent (I believe mostly west coast) studio player and sideman who shared stages or recorded with many of the greatest artists of the swing and bop eras and whose hallmark for me is the understated elegance of his playing, always a complement to whoever he supports. "John's Delight" offers a rare opportunity for him to display his soloing talents front and center. With the very "delightful" results composer Dameron doubtless anticipated when (I believe) writing the piece expressly for him.
The additional presences of Bud Powell, Milt Jackson, JJ Johnson, Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray, Sonny Rollins and drummers Roy Haines and Kenny Clarke, not to mention a young, yet to evolve Miles Davis (especially on one of my favorite Dameron compositions, "Focus"), contribute to creating two-plus hours of the most consistently absorbing and timelessly fresh music it is possible to hear. Unreservedly recommended.
The stuff legends are made of... .......2005-10-02
Tadd Dameron and Fats Navarro were very important figures in bebop, and these tracks demonstrate why...
Dameron came up with a lot of interesting chord progressions, and he was a fine melodist and small group arranger. Thelonius Monk gets more attention as the great composer to come out of the beboppers, but Damerson certainly could hold his own. Check out Heavens Doors Are Open Wide.. Like Gil Evans, he was great at arranging for a small group taking a few horns voicing them to sound much larger.
Fats plays does some great (if short - many of the tracks run under 3:00) soloing on this, and you also get a snapshot of Sonny Rollins early style too. Fats Navarro was the link between Dizzy Gillespie and Clifford Brown. While he had great technique and was harmonically advanced, he was also a very melodic player.
If you're a bebop fan, you'll want this.
Shawn
Tremendous as well as underrated.......2001-10-27
The world seems to know Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, and Miles Davis as the ultimate bebop trumpet players, but Fats Navarro truly deserves a spot in that hall-of-fame also. The recordings represented here, mostly recorded from 1947 to 1949, show how Fats represents a link between Diz and Brownie. Though he died far too young at age 26 (tuberculosis complicated by a heroin addiction) his work still sounds fresh and exciting to this day.
Since this is a Blue Note release, you know the sound quality is first-rate. This 36 song collection (23 songs, 13 alternate takes) would make an excellent companion to the circa '46-'47 collection Goin' To Minton's. Overall, if you can only have one CD release of Fats Navarro's greatness, make it this one.
Delights.......2001-01-17
A wonderful two-disc set including performances by the legendary Tadd Dameron, Bud Powell, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, and Miles Davis corresponding with the lesser known Charlie Rouse (Monks tenor of choice), the ill-fated alto-saxophonist Ernie Henry, trombonists J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding, and transcendental RoyEldridge/DizzyGillespie hybrid Howard Mcghee. And, ofcourse, the illimitable Fats Navarro featured on 32 of the 36 tracks. A fine collection in every aspect highlighted by Dameron and Powell originals, however, the first six songs on the second disc are all-solid Mcghee-Navarro collaborations. Lots of Fats through and through and through...a classic record. P.S.....intrestingly the four tunes minus Navarro include a young Miles Davis as the ninth piece in Damerons' band.
a bop classic.......2000-11-21
was tadd dameron one of the greatest jazz composers of all time? one run through this wonderful blue note compilation serves as heavy evidence that he was. several of his standards are here played by the composer with some great icons of the be-bop era. a 22 year old miles davis appears on the last four tracks of disc 1 and a young sonny rollins appears on the navarro tracks with bud powell (disc 2, tracks 7-14). the music is a glimpse of the revolution happening on 52nd street and at minton's playhouse in the 1940s as jazz suddenly had swing infused with bop. mr. navarro may not be all that familiar to audiences today (he died in the late 40s), but his influence has been heard through jazz from the trumpet voices of clifford brown, miles davis, lee morgan, and younger voices like roy hargrove. mr. navarro was a follower of dizzy gillespie, but soon developed his own sound. listen to the tracks with bud powell and you will know that jazz lost a great innovator just as he was coming into his prime. this is a great set, especially for those wanting to hear bebop in its purest form.

Album Description
Nat King Cole (1919-1965) was the most popular male singer of his generation, and, along with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, one of the four best known male vocalists of all time. Making Cole's story all the more remarkable, he began his career not as a pop singer but as one of the greatest of all jazz pianists. Yet by the time he had made the transition from jazz to pop, he had sold more records and racked up more hit singles than anyone in the immediate post-war era, even Frank Sinatra. He was also the first Afro-American pop music superstar - and still the greatest. This new 11-CD set is the first complete collection of all of Nat Cole's recordings from the final half-decade of his career, a total of 292 masters. The set includes all of the following albums, in many cases including rare 'bonus' material from the same sessions. Cole's only in-concert recording, "Live At The Sands" (1960) - universally regarded as one of the great live albums of all time. 'Wild Is Love' - Cole's only original-story concept album, containing the classic title song, and his last collaboration with the great arranger Nelson Riddle (1960).
Album Details
The Second and Final Box Anthology from the Bear Family Label Chronicling the Late Great Crooner's Years Recording for Capitol Records. The Set Includes 11 CDs with a Hardcover Book Filled with Liner Notes and Photos. (LP Size)
Customer Reviews:
The last 5 years of a great career..........2007-05-14
This is the second of two deluxe sets covering the last ten years of Nat King Cole's career (the first is STARDUST, which covers 1955-1959). They are both outstanding productions, and each has a full-sized hardcover book filled with rare black and white and color illustrations, and an outstanding essays on each album by Nat King Cole expert Will Friedwald. Friedwald writes with insight and with wit, and for a Nat King Cole fan it's priceless to hear what he has to say about each song.
Nat King Cole was in his own way a rather restless artist, who often wanted to try something new. But he also sang classics, and revisited songs that earlier had brought him success.
There are 292 songs on this set, and many of them are excellent, and so keep that in mind if you are deciding whether this set is worth the money. If you are a Nat King Cole fan, you must buy this set, even if it means sacrificing a bit in some other area of your life.
Here are some of the great albums on this set:
First is Nat King Cole at the Sands, an outstanding live set recorded in the wee hours of the morning. Songs like The Continental just have such joy and beauty in them that they really need to be heard. And don't miss the hilarious song Mr. Cole Won't Rock and Roll where he parodies rock and roll and himself at the same time. You will almost certainly laugh out loud while hearing this 8 minute epic.
Second is NKC's experimental album Wild is Love. I've never fully warmed up to this rather strange lp, but I do enjoy that he was stretching himself. And it is interesting!
Third is The Christmas Song, which is obviously a great classic for the holidays.
Fourth is The Touch of Your Lips, a great collection of romantic ballads that just make you feel good.
Fifth is the giant three album collection called The Nat King Cole Story, which features stereo remakes of many of the greatest hits from this star of popular music from earlier in his career, including Mona Lisa, Smile, Unforgettable, etc. There are 36 classics on this album. Outstanding!
Sixth is the jazzy fast-paced Let's Face the Music and Dance...
Seventh album, eighth, 9th, 10th, etc., etc. plus singles. To find out about them you'll just have to buy the set yourself. And don't forget you'll get that great large-format 182 page coffee table hardcover book by Nat King Cole expert Will Friedwald.
Bottom line: buy this set if you are a Nat King Cole fan. You won't regret it! In fact, buy Stardust too while you're at it!

Collins Straight Up.......2001-12-31
This is Albert Collins from 1969 and 1970, in the studio because Bob Hite from Canned Heat told the folks at Imperial about his incredible talent. This was the break he needed. He began opening for groups such as the Allman Brothers and started to gain the national exposure he deserved. We don't get any information about the band backing him, in spite of the excellent notes by Pete Welding. What we hear is a tight horn section that probably got that way from playing with Collins on the many club dates he had in Houston, Texas. Disc One is mainly funky instrumentals with little of the blues he came back to when he joined Alligator Records in 1977. By the time we get to Disc Two Collins is singing and playing more of the blues that he does best. He seems to have become more confident in his singing ability. (This confidence grows to the point where he sings on most of his songs by the time he is signed to Alligator, when he really shines.) This 2-CD box is not his best work but a valuable collection for his fans. Digitally re-mastered for the Master of the Telecaster!
They Called Him "Razor Blade" 'Cuz He Cut So Deep.......2001-11-27
The late Albert Collins was one of the very best guitarists America ever produced. His idiosyncrasies probably hurt his recording career, because he didn't fit neatly into a marketable category. He incorporated elements of blues, R&B, rock & had a very funky sound. If you ever heard him play, you would recognize his style within 3 notes, a block away. He tuned his Telecaster to a D-minor open chord & always had a capo halfway up the neck. He used his thumbnail instead of a pick, and didn't really pick, strum or pluck -- he attacked the strings in an incredibly percussive way. His style was so unusual that you might overlook the fact that the guy could flat-out play.
Unless you saw him live. Albert was a showman, and you couldn't take your eyes off him. He had crazy-looking eyes, a perpetually impish look about him, and he was really, really funny. It's a cliche to talk about a guitarist making it sing, scream or cry. Albert made his guitar swear during his nightly diatribes at his woman.
Although there are great tracks on his live efforts, some of the cuts really worked a lot better where you could actually see him. For those who never saw him live, there are three studio CDs that give a good overview of his work.
THe 2-CD Complete Imperial Recordings set is a revelation to those who are only familiar with Albert's work after his Alligator releases finally raised his profile in the late 70's. Not yet the pyrotechnic showman, this compilation of 3 60's albums shows a surprising kinship with the solid, fundamental funk of the Meters. At times, he sounds like he was from New Orleans, not Texas. Understated, soulful, classy and as always, cool. Most cuts are the Albert Collins equivalent of lean, powerful Booker T & the MGs instrumental workouts. The 36 songs are good enough to stand on their own, and he didn't try to overpower anyone with his technical prowess.
Like a number of unjustly neglected blues acts, Albert got a boost from Alligator Records in the 70's. His breakthrough came with 1978's Ice Pickin.' It features two of the live-wire instrumentals he was famous for ("Ice Pick," "Avalanche") and a generous helping of his world-weary grievances with women, including the classic "Conversation With Collins" (more fun live, but still fun on disc) where his guitar not only spouts obscenities, it takes on the multiple roles of a complaining husband, and a wife both seductive & defiant. Some shuffles, a couple slow burners.
In 1991, Albert served up Iceman, practically a straight-up funk revue. If you play it for people who aren't familiar with electric blues, they'll adamantly deny that it is blues at all. Well, it is & it isn't. Albert is backed by the fullest band sound he ever had, with a full 4-man horn section, bass, organ & keyboards (yes, 2 different guys), plenty of rhythm guitarists, a solid rock-steady drummer, and 2 female background singers cooing "Mr. Collins, Mr. Collins!" on the tracks that start & end the CD.
All three come highly recommended.

Four Brothers Band: An essential moment in Jazz history.......2000-08-15
This is beautiful, entertaining and exciting jazz, and for 1947, years ahead of its time; sounds like something from the early 60's. The sound is great, too. This disc is what a lot of people are looking for in the modern jazz of the post-war era. I thought this was the 2nd Herd for the record, as it states in liner notes (1st Herd, the Thundering Herd, having had recorded for Columbia), but I like this better than that period, although I may be in a minority.
"Early Autumn" featuring solo work by one the "Four Brothers" on saxophone, Stan Getz is an all-time classic. I really want to give this 4 1/2 stars, though 1/2 increments not formatted here. The listening value of these recordings will appreciate in time for you, here, although even this is not quite Woody at his absolute tops. For that, I would go to, or wish for a CD re-issue of "Woody Winners", recorded live at the Basin Street West in San Francisco in 1965 for Columbia, which might lend evidence to the compliment reputedly given by Count Basie that Woody's band was the only band capable of "cutting" his band ("Winners" was briefly re-issued on CD overseas from Sony/France a few years ago, and maybe you can find it at a used site or auction, but why anyone in their right mind would give that up I don't know). In the meantime, compensate by starting your Woody collection here if you haven't already. Satisfying. I'm glad to have this in in mine in a big way. Woody's creativity in the 40's and even later on astounds me, the way he help jazz move along by leaps and bounds.
the third herd at its finest!.......1999-03-26
absolutely my favorite Woody Herman CD. I bought all these records on the old 45rpm format way back then. If you were a big band jazz fan during the 40's and 50's ........ well then this CD will bring back a hundred and one memories.

Customer Reviews:
Nat Really Bops!!.......2006-08-01
I usually think folks go overboard when they give a product 5 stars, but in this case, it deserves every one! The mastering of the CDs is excellent (I'm guessing, but CDs 1-4 appear to be all mono and CDs 5-11 are a mix of mono and binaural). However, in this time period, mono recording was at its peak and most people wouldn't even know that they aren't binaural recordings unless you brought it to their attention.
Nat was a world-wide singer/performer, unlike some of his peers who only had a fan base in the United States and/or Europe. There's quite a bit of Spanish language material in this set which gives the box an "international" flavor.
The large, thick book that comes with the set is well-written and has many, many excellent color and b&w photos of Nat from the period.
According to the publisher, many of the tracks are presented for the first time without the overdubbing on the original releases. Regardless, Nat's voice is pure and sweet and he knows how to play that piano!
Expensive? A bit, but if you are going to ever treat yourself to an extravagance, this is it. If you have the means, I highly suggest you procure this set! By the way, this appears to be the first of a two-box set collection. I can't wait for the second!
Outstanding boxed set of one of the greatest singers of all time!.......2006-04-21
I just got this yesterday, and since it's an 11 cd set with a more than 200 page coffee-table sized book, I've only just begun to enjoy it. So, this is a very preliminary review, which I'll perhaps update later.
So far, however, I'm glad I spent the money on this set, and I think any Nat King Cole fan out there would feel the same way. It's a lot of money, true, but a lot of the albums and songs on this set are out of print, including such classic albums as St. Louis Blues, where Nat King Cole and the legendary Nelson Riddle recorded what--for me--are some of the definitive versions of these songs. There are 290 songs on this set, among them some of the greatest Nat King Cole ever recorded, including Autumn Leaves, Let's Fall in Love, Just You Just Me, Caravan, Stardust, and on and on. His voice and piano playing are worth this kind of deluxe treatment.
And the book by Will Friedwald is lavishly illustrated and beautifully written.
The sound quality on the first disc is outstanding, and I'm sure the other discs will be the same.
As I said, I just got it, but so far it's nothing short of fantastic for a Nat King Cole fan.
