Having achieved monstrous success as both a pop vocalist and as an electric guitarist, the legendary Benson now spends most of his albums switching back and forth between crooning over easy soul grooves and gracefully invoking the spirit of Wes Montgomery, the forerunner of his snappy "Breezin'" six-string style. Somewhere in the middle of these two modes, Benson finds his most distinctive voice as an inventive scat vocalist. Benson scats effectively here over brisk guitar licks on the best tracks, the retro-funky, densely percussive "Cruise Control" and the seductive Latin waltz, "Poquito Spanish, Poquito Funk." Smooth-jazz superproducer Paul Brown adds two clever touches to this latter track: brief symphonic washes and a soaring chant vocal behind the scat. The subtle sense of soul Brown has given to a large handful of smooth-jazz stars comes across best on the hooky "Fly by Night," which sounds like a great Boney James tune only with Benson's guitar in the lead. The set is bookended by the gentler guitar meditations, "C-Smooth" and "Keep Rollin'," which are likable enough. Between these cuts, however, Benson plays it pretty safe, functioning mostly as a lead vocalist on fluffy, easygoing romances he didn't write, like the title track and "Back to Love." "All I Know" is a far cry from "On Broadway," but, as on that classic song, Benson mixes a passionate lead vocal with the scat interludes we never quite get tired of.

Benson again strikes a balance between pop grooves, accessible vocal numbers, and his signature guitar work. As before, helping to achieve the concept are executive producer Tommy LiPuma and studio mainstay Ricky Peterson, who plays keyboard and a variety of other roles.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

This is just a terrible album. Benson is capable of far better things than this mindless fluff. "Corny" is the best way to describe it. This sounds like one of those contractual obligation albums, where an artist just releases anything to fulfill their contract. Don't waste your money on this garbage!

Why Only two stars???????.......2005-02-11

How much you like this CD depends on why you like George in the first place. If you like his vocals, and his love songs, they are on here, and take up much of the album. If, like me, you prefer his instrumentals, they too are on here, and even through they are the minority, they are the reasons I enjoy this CD. Standouts are c-smooth, and poquito spanish, poquito funk, which are firing. Personally i wish george would do an instrumental cd, but maybe one day.

It's been several years since I purchased anything by George Benson. I wasnn't really sure what he was doing these days. Well, I can tell you, he's doing better than ever. You can't go wrong with one of his cd's, even if you've never heard one single track; you won't be sorry. Track 4, "C-Groove" was the only cut I had heard before I purchased the cd, but track 1,5, and 7 are by far my favorites, then comes track 9, 2, 3, 8,...well, the entire cd is great. You won't be disappointed if you're a Benson fan.

The "staple" of jazz guitar that we all know as George Benson returns with nine tracks of smooth "feel good" music. You just can't help but get into this one. From the 1st track, "C-smooth" to the last "Keep Rollin'" George just keeps the sweetness comin'. What can I say? Its George. You won't be disappointed.

Cruise Control is the closes cut to the Old George Benson.far to much of the material he plays it safe.The That's Right Disc was Better than this one.His Vocals are alright and There's some trademark Benson Guitar Playing but overall this is Cocktail Lite from a Man who is a Legend and can do most of this by the Numbers Material in His Sleep.

Now here I go again , West coast don't you know soul when you here it ? THESE BOYS AND GIRLS ARE HOT!!!! you get styles of the whipers , one way remember them ,slave . Great vocals ,you better go back and check it. I won't let you be lonely , whose gonna sing that these days .USHER,TWISTA,BEYOUNCE,nope ain't happening.buy this and get your r&b fix.Maybe then there won't be no parking on the dance floor. my favorite saying is play the funk not the junk .ciao till next time

another classic gem.......2005-10-07

the second release of the band to date. this album was originally released back in 1981 summer by solar records. 'tuff', 'hold out', 'I've been watching you', 'I got what you need' and the title track are synth-based jams can easily burn up the dancefloor in a minute. slow jams are pleasant too especially 'I wont let you be lonely' is my favourite. you can get the feeling of groove all the way down as you listen to this album. the cover photo of the band with oriental-über-space boogie-ish outwears is nice and stylish also. a must have.

I met the mailman at the mailbox--I just couldn't wait!!! This cd brought back so many memories-I think I fell in love with my ex all over again! This is definitely some of the best of Midnight Star.

If you like Donna the Buffalo, you will like this Ithaca style music. It's Americana at its best. But, I'm not sure why you should pay thiry bucks to an Amazon reseller since CD is readily available at funkyside.com for fourteen and at chautauquaamp.com for fifteen. You can listen to sound bites at funkyside. Unfortunately, band is breaking up so this will probably be the last CD for current members although I would guess that "survivors" will regroup with a new cast.
