On this joint release from Gramavision and HIFI, thirteen of Mancini's most memorable tunes have been inverted and subverted by some of the Bay Area's finest improvising musicians. An inspired blend of weighty musicianship and giddy fun, Oranj Symphonette's bold creations could be labeled "savant lounge," "uneasy listening," and "acid 'zak" if one must pigeonhole these improv secessionists from the Cocktail Nation.

The quintet balances their serious jazz chops with madcap humor, from the spy-punk rampage of "A Shot In The Dark" and the cheesy exotica of "Lujon" to the fearsome psychosonics of "Mr. Yunioshi" and the drop-dead beauty of Brubeck's cello on "Moon River." "Free improvisation," notes Brubeck, "is a lot of fun for the musicians, but it has a tendency to leave the audience in the dust. However, when your original reference point is as well known as, say, 'The Pink Panther Theme,' you don't lose people on the ride. There is a long jazz tradition of reworking popular songs into vehicles for improvisation. This band just gets its material from some unusual sources."

2 out of 5 stars The barest glimpse of John Williams.......2006-08-15

John Williams is one of the world's best guitarists, but you'd never know it by listening to this album. He basically plucks out the melody. I think I hear more complex playing in the background, but if that's what it is, it's mixed so as to be barely audible. On the other hand, it's very nice background music. I hope brisk sales support Williams' more serious efforts.

If I were not a guitarist myself, I would find this collection very very charming. Certainly the selections are beautiful, and Williams is renowned for one of them: Stanley Myers' "Cavatina" from THE DEER HUNTER. It's just that for me this recording does virtually nothing for either the guitar or the lovely pieces selected for this rather peculiar alteration. I'm just not sure that this kind of project, where a virtuoso SOLOIST is brought in to ACCOMPANY an orchestra (Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma have done similar recordings) is a winner; not even five percent of Williams' prodigious technique is anywhere to be heard and he just sounds so irrelevant. (I'd usually expect to hear this kind of thing from Liona Boyd.) That being acknowledged though, the melodies ARE perfectly lovely and Mr. Williams HAS throughout his great career done many brilliant recordings of dense and difficult music that leave one's mouth agape. I suppose he's earned this little vacation.

While this album is pleasant enough, it is more orchestra music than classical guitar. John Williams is a great classical guitarist, but the guitar part on this album could have been played by any competent guitarist. If you want nice background music, this album is ok. If you want classical guitar music, look elsewhere.

If you like film music, this CD is for you; if you like guitar music, this CD is for you. John Williams brings his guitar virtuosity to bear masterfully on the scores of a number of popular films, which span a period of 60 years.

The use of the guitar gives a different sound to number of the selections, and shows that a good piece of music will shine, no matter what the instrumentation.

It is a chopped and patched cd! It has two selections among others that were only available from a very obscure LP called 3 Great Bands, with Prado and Hirt. "Bluesy" features a smooth solo by the ever grand soloist for Mancini, Jack Sheldon, who also puts a very catchy "Lawrence of Arabia" theme ending. This is almost surely worth the price, but then listen to the Ellington tune "In A Mellow Mood" and you'll be blown away. Where these tunes come from is an even greater mystery to me...the # GB I told you about was only an RCA promo thing, and not a Mancini effort. So take this one and run because you'l not find these selections anywhere else! It is reminiscent of "Uniquely" and "Big Band'67" and as jazzy as Gunn and others of the early RCA genre. You'll love it, and the prices it is being offerred at is a bargain.

    Moody a true JAZZ GIANT, gives here a splendid interpretation of some of the best known Mancini's standards. Here you have one of the best songwriters of the passed century, and one of the overall ever best jazz musicians. What do you think could came out from this encounter? Fantastic music obviously ... Moody has the perfect attitude to play Mancini's music. He is absolutly perfect to play a music that is humorous, malinconic, sad and happy at the same time, fresh, light but deep ... I really love Mancini's songbook and I really love when great jazz musicians put their musicianship at the service of this music. If you want to buy two fantastic Mancini's songbooks buy this one and the one Sarah Vaughan recorded (it's a Mercury record). You'll thank me later! Two fantasmagorical albums. Moody does a splendid Job here believe me. The "Pink Panther" version is THE version of the song. Moonriver is sung as only Moody could do. Un-be-lie-va-ble !!!!! And moreover this album is recorded very very very well. Buy this one absolutly, even if you're not a strictly Jazz enthusiast. It is a ten stars album that everyone with a sufficient musical ear will love. Long live Moody. Long live immortal Mancini's music.

    Take heed. James Moody is a spiritual master of life as well as music. While many talk of racial prejudice, Mr. Moody has lived through the absolute worst of it. At age 75 ( can you believe it? He doesn't look a day over 50!), James has seen the most horrible examples of Jim Crow, and not only survived, but transcended the cruelty and pettiness of this world to become a true hero and role model who all of us would do well to learn from. If you don't believe me, check out this album. Every note he plays speaks the truth of his vast experience. This album is some of the most representative examples of Moody's brilliant playing. Please don't miss out on this living legend.

      This album will console fans of Zorn's Naked City who mourn their disbanding in the early 1990s. 13 Mancini tunes are given readings that combine cheesiness & thrash into an homage that somehow manages to come off as a genuine tribute to the music of the late Henry Mancini. The opening track, "A Shot in the Dark", is overtly pinched from the first, self-titled Naked City album, using virtually the same arrangement. Ralph Carney's saxophone & duck calls are similarly straight out of Zorn's bag. But I hardly am bothered by matters of originality: the band (Carney, Joe Gore on guitar, Matt Brubeck on cello & bass, & Scott Amendola on drums) performs this material well, & even the more bluntly parodic versions--such as the desecration of the classic jazz standard "The Days of Wine and Roses"--aren't _merely_ ironic: there's real substance & feistiness here too. & the album doesn't outstay its welcome, at a pithy 42 minutes. Worth a sprinkling of stars, & an enjoyable listen in this age of the tribute album.

      Whoa! What a breath of fresh air! This is without a doubt the greatest new musical purchase I've made in years. Inovative and just damn entertaining. A couple of these guys are frequent Tom Waits backers, which is why I bought the CD. I wasn't prepared for this. This is fun!

      Great disc. Combines jazz influences with surf, noise, rock, etc. Exciting at times, melodic too. All the renditions of classic Mancini tunes do justice. Check out "A Shot in the Dark" and "Mr. Yunoshi" for fast paced stuff, but there's variety. Only problem: on one or two songs they indulge in Sonic-Youth-esque noise that distract the listener from the overall song. but don't let that stop you. Check this out. Plus, one of the band members is Dave Brubeck's son! But there's not much of a musical resemblance. A fun CD, unabashedly cheesey at times (Peter Gunn meets Baby Elephant Walk for the finale. Hilarious and entertaining). Think Jazz meets Laika and the Cosmonauts meets Morphine. Enjoy! David Brodie
