The man who produced the very first albums by saxophonists Kenny G, Dave Koz, and Art Porter went into the studio with the intention of kickin' it on his Fender Rhodes piano along with a few of his horn-playing friends. He came out with his best album since his historic Arista Records heyday in the late 1970s. The two best soloists on the 40-minute, 10-song set are Gerald Albright and long-time Lorber band member, Gary Meek. Respectively, they kick off the first two tracks with the kind of unique jazz-funk that made Lorber a legend with acid jazzers and fans who were there in the late '70s when jazz-rock met urban R&B. The keyboardist pays nice tributes to two contemporary jazz icons, The Crusaders and Ramsey Lewis, with killer covers of "Keep That Same Ol' Feelin," featuring Albright, and "The In Crowd," featuring a perfectly subdued Richard Elliot. "Happy Endings," a ballad with Koz, seems to be Lorber's only appeasement to smooth-jazz radio, as the rest, including the only other ballad (the very pretty "Reflections"), are pure Lorber. They're tunes that are just as interesting harmonically as they are rhythmically, with great soloing, to boot. If more of his current keyboard peers delivered the same, smooth jazz would look a lot better overall. --Mark Ruffin

Seventies jazz/funk fusion pioneer Jeff Lorber has hooked up with Albright for half of these tracks; that's appropriate because Albright's sound has a direct lineage from the past. He is the leading light continuing down the path blazed by Hank Crawford, King Curtis, and David Sanborn. Highlights here are the driving, hard-hitting tunes Lorber and Albright have produced together. The funkiest of the lot are "On the One," "Throw Yo' Hands," and "To the Max." Albright also displays the influence of Motown sax star Jr. Walker with "Walker's Theme." Like Walker, who covered acts ranging from the Guess Who to the Crusaders, Albright is very clever in his cover choices, with interpretations of the music of Harold Melvin, Brian McKnight, and a very interesting version of John Mayer's "Why Georgia," featuring Peter White. This is Albright's best effort in a decade. --Mark Ruffin

5 out of 5 stars Gerald Albright Is On Fire Here!.......2005-02-06

This is Gerald's latest effort, and I must say,it is a real smooth jazz gem.Gerald really lets it fly here, with jazzy energy everywhere. There isn't a dud on the entire album! While you may have heard of the popular single from this album on the radio, the funky "To The Max",there is more to this album than just funk. While there are a number of funky, upbeat and groovy tunes on this album, such as "4 On The Floor","ToThe Max","Throw Yo' Hands In The Air",and"On The One",there are also an equal amount of more standard, traditional smooth jazz stylings as well. Not like its a bad thing, far from it,because these tunes help to balance the album out and more, keeping it from going stale. Some of the more standard tunes on the album are,"Why Georgia","Walker's Theme",and "Father's Lullaby",which Gerald produced in remembrance of his late father. However, even the not so funky tunes shine here, with one of the best examples being Gerald's nice cover version of "Why Georgia".There is also a vocal track on the album,"Condition Of My Heart",performed by a former "Boyz To Men" member. While the album as a whole is great, the best picks are,"4 On The Floor","To The Max","Why Georgia","Throw Yo' Hands In The Air","On The One",and "If You Don't Know Me By Now".If you are looking for an exceptional sax player, then look no further, because you just found one. This album should be in everyone's smooth jazz collection.I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars YEEEE-OOWWW, This thing is HOT and TASTEY!!!!.......2004-11-19

Quite frequently, I buy albums and only one song is worth listening to... This is most certainly not the case here. I loved nearly the entire album, especially numbers 1 and 2 cuts. If these don't get you up and into a thumping Jazz trance, well you're dead. I have liked Albright in the past, but I feel this time he's really created a masterpiece. As stated earlier, this one is H-O-T!!

1 out of 5 stars Garbage !.......2004-10-28

Another great player selling out to sell more. Seems like another outbreak of the Kenny bug. I'm sure any jazz aficianado would agree with me when I say that Gerald Albright is a much more comprehensive player than this album suggets. Check out the 'Live at Birdland West' album for a taste of what Mr. Albright is really about.

2 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2006-02-04

Well, as a Feat fan since 1971 I've seen lots of changes from this band and their sound. Clearly the passing of Lowell George was the band's defining moment to assert the talent of Payne, Barrere, Hayward et al. Gladly, they did just that with "Let It Roll" showing that the Feat can still rock with the lovely harmony, percussion and diversity that's defined their style. But "Kickin'" takes the band further into the softer side of the Feat personality. What I can do without is the Latino track "Corazones Y Sombras" that stands out like a sore thumb. If I wanted to listen to "Corazones..." I'd buy a Latino band's album or just listen to what's eminating from every taco stand, car wash or gardner's truck here in southern California. Clearly this is Bill Payne's thing as he had to import a whole crew of Latin musicians to create this non-Feat track. Some reviewers have liked this direction, I'm not one of them. I originally commented on the album's lighter drum presence but seeing that Richie's son was recently involved in a serious auto crash and suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), it just a blessing that Richie was able to participate in the sessions at all. His commanding presence will return as his son heals. There are some tracks that show their heritage is still alive, and the instrumental "Stomp" almost gets my feet tapping, but we need more funk and less Latino. There's always been fleeting references to Latin roots in their music, but never a dominant track like what we get here. The fans that worship this band have been around since the 70's. We're here for the funk, the harmony and the soul. "Corazones..." is not the music that brought us in. Like Paul McCartney said: "Get back to where you once belonged."

3 out of 5 stars A solid effort.......2005-04-18

Kickin' It At The Barn shows Little Feat continuing to expand their musical horizons. While their musicianship continues to be impressive and the performances here are first rate, the songwriting is somewhat inconsistent with most of the best songs comprising the album's first half.

The album starts out strong with "Night On The Town" and "Heaven Foresaken." Paul Barrere's lead vocals on these tracks are as smooth as ever and Bill Payne's piano work on the former continues to be first rate. The female backing vocals add a nice touch to these tracks. In another time when radio emphasized music over image, "Heaven Foresaken" would have been a hit. "I'd Be Lyin" is a blues shuffle which spotlights Shaun Murphy's soaring lead vocals. The band continue to add to their musical stew with the Mexican sounds of "Corazones y Sombras" which is one of the best tracks here. The true standout on the album is the instrumental "Stomp", a killer 9-minute fusion jam which features great solos from Barrere, Payne, and a relentless pace provided by drummer Richie Hayward, bassist Kenny Gradney, and percussionist Sam Clayton that never lets up. The remaining tracks such as "Why Don't It Look Like The Way It Talk", "Walking As Two", and "Fighting The Mosquito Wars" are decent songs but are very laid back and with their long track lengths could numb you to sleep. Songs like "I Do What The Telephone Tells Me To Do" and "A Night Like This" don't stand out. The album ends with "Bill's River Blues" which although very mellow is a pretty sweet tune along par with the great slower songs that Lowell George once penned for the band. All told, a solid and very well performed album that would have been stronger if a few of the more laid back tunes weren't included.

4 out of 5 stars Diverse, entertaining and just pure class.......2005-01-08

If any of Feat's albums reflect the sheer expertise, diversity and technical excellence of this band, I have yet to hear it. As a band, they are without peers, both in the studio and on stage. I've had this CD now for about 2 weeks, and I will agree with one of the other reviewers that Ms Murphy isn't used enough. The intensity of 'Stomp' is hard to describe, how they feed off one another in this tune is pure magic. The almost sarcastic 'I Do What the Telephone Tells Me To Do' is pure Feat. For me, the only waste track is the Spanish-flavored 'Corazones Y Sombras ', where the band does a workmanlike performance only. I find this one boring in the extreme, and, when making a copy of the CD for my car, I left this one off.
All in all, a VERY pleasant experience though....recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Not What You Might Expect..........2004-11-12

I love Little Feat. This recording took awhile to sink in for me. Once it did, I began to understand the musical intellegence & brillance of this remarkable band.

Other bands have tried to achieve the blendings of different ganderas of style, but often those other bands sound really chart driven or mechanical. Little Feat can make things work the shouldn't...

There isn't a slacker in the bunch. All the tunes flow and most get you pumped. Each tune explores different and yet familiar terrain. A tune for the intricate southern funk & rock sound to the progressive (almost fusion sound of Stomp). Excellent spin and don't under estimate this fine album. Nice to hear the band free of old contractual bounds

An etherial mix of breathtaking tunes, "Kickin' It at the Barn" Features everything from ballads to Mexican Rock & Roll to mariachi guitar with a full-on horn section. Recorded at Fred Tackett's studio in Topanga Canyon, CA, it proved to give the band solace; as not even a cell phone gets reception in the valley. Little Feat's current incarnation was formed by the members of the group in 1986 after an impromptu jam session that ended 7 years of downtime and side-projects. Now free to explore endless creativity fueled by the launch of their label Hot Tomato Records, Little Feat has is setting the standard for Bonaroo's contemporaries, enduring 30 years of constant touring and multiple studio and live album releases. The band consists of Paul Barerre on Slide and vocals, Shaun Murphy on vocals, Fred Tackett on Trumpet and guitars, Ritchie Hayward on Drums, Sam Clayton on percussion & vocals and Kenny Gradney on bass. This two-CD set collects a couple of shows by George and Ira Gershwin. Both produced in 1925, the two musicals--Tip-Toes and Tell Me More--are fairly obscure and don't boast as many famous songs as contemporary Gershwin offerings such as Oh, Kay! and Lady Be Good. Still, they are bursting with wit, invention, and joie de vivre. Based on a 1998 concert production, Tip-Toes is delicious, and several songs deserve a place in the Gershwin pantheon: the ballad "Looking for a Boy," the love duet "That Certain Feeling," and the rousing dance number "Sweet and Low-Down." The score is also notable for its spectacular writing for duo pianos. Tell Me More is not as immediately accessible (indeed, it had the shortest run of any Gershwin musical, with 32 performances), but it's delivered with élan by its topnotch cast, which includes Sally Mayes, Christine Ebersole, Diane Fratantoni, and David Garrison. Under the expert musical direction of Rob Fisher (from New York's famed Encores! series), this double set is, of course, essential for Gershwin completists. In fact, just about any fan of zany Jazz Age artifacts should relish it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Tip-Toes, which made its Broadway debut on December 28, 1925, was produced by Alex A. Aarons and Vinton Freedley, who had been the producers of the Gershwins' smash hit Lady, Be Good! the year before. Attempting to repeat that success, they once again combined the same book writers, Guy Bolton and Fred Thompson, with the Gershwin brothers. Tip-Toes was well received by audiences and the press, and ran for 194 performances. It was given a subsequent production at the Winter Garden Theatre in London, opening August 31, 1926, running for 181 performances.

One of the most overlooked Gershwin shows, Tell Me More was also the most unlikely of Jazz Age musicals. In an era marked by lavish extravaganzas and brash star vehicles, Tell Me More, which opened on April 13, 1925, relied on charm, modesty, and an impish sense of humor. Because it failed to recoup its investment on Broadway, it was relegated to the list of Gershwin flops; because its score was largely forgotten, it has been widely regarded as a minor effort. In truth, it's a key show. As the only full-length collaboration between George and Ira Gershwin and B.G. DeSylva, it combines the delicacy and grace of the scores George had written earlier in the decade with DeSylva and the bold wit he had pioneered in partnership with his brother Ira four months earlier in Lady, Be Good! The best of both worlds, Tell Me More was a one-of-a-kind achievement.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Gifts from musical theater heaven!.......2005-07-24

The restoration of several complete Gershwin scores in recent years has been a gift from the theater gods. These two shows lack the bite of "Strike Up the Band," "Of Thee I Sing" and other earlier releases, but they have no lack of the Ira's wit and George's effortless melodies. Upbeat tuners "Kickin' the Clouds Away" and "Sweet and Low-Down" are especially engaging, and the authentic-sounding orchestrations lend a nostalgic aura. The first-rate casts seem to be having the time of their lives.

4 out of 5 stars Tell Me More and more and more.......2001-12-07

I bought this CD because I had seen the concert of Tip-Toes, which I found enjoyable if uneven: great songs in Act I and not much in Act II. But for me, the real revelation here is Tell Me More, a totally forgotten Gershwin musical from the Twenties. I only knew one of the songs, "Kickin' the Clouds Away," but this score hits all the right notes, from gently melodic to flat-out funny. And the cast couldn't be better. David Garrison and Christine Ebersole are hugely funny in the comic roles, tossing out their one-liners like the Broadway pros that they are. And what a delight to hear the romantic couple on one of these vintage recordings -- in this case, Diane Fratantoni and Philip Chaffin -- sing just like a real period couple: him with the creamy tenor voice and her with the boop-a-doop flapper sound. Their rendition of "Three Times a Day," a lovely ballad with a Kern-like flavor, is, for me, the highlight of this 2-CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Two restored little Gershwin gems.......2001-11-10

Although the Princess shows of Kern, Bolton and Wodehouse back in 1917 tried to introduce a solid plot into the American musical comedy, the story lines still did not amount to much until "Show Boat " set the standard. So when George and Ira Gershwin opened with two musicals in 1925, the first was based on a mistaken-identity situation already a cliché in the genre (Bolton did the book); and the second (again with Bolton, plus B.D. de Sylva) was about the Florida land boom that also formed the basis of Berlin's "The Coconuts" the very same year.

Both "Tell Me More" and "Tip-Toes" were part of the discovery of many Gershwin manuscripts buried in a New Jersey warehouse; and we can be most thankful to New World Records for restoring the scores and bits of the dialogue in a two-CD boxed set (80598-2). The music is what you would expect from Gershwin: 1920s jazzy with that special core of Gershwin genius. Yes, a good deal of it sounds like Berlin and Kern--as did just about every other contemporary composer except Romberg (who sounded like Herbert). On the other hand, "Kickin' the Clouds Away" from the earlier show seems to be the inspiration for Berlin's "Shakin' the Blues Away" written two years later! "Tell Me More" also does not shy away from ethnic jokes (i.e., mistaking a request to disguise oneself as British for doing so as Yiddish) that do not offend at all. And if we moderns grow impatient with the rich bubbleheads of the F. Scott Fitzgerald crowd, they are still a breath of fresh air after the population of "Miss Saigon" and plays of that sort.

The game casts have voices just right for this sort of characterization and delivery. The "Tip-Toes" production is taken from the Carnegie Hall Concert version and is outstanding.

This New World set deserves a place of honor among the other Gershwin Brothers restorations on other labels. And do not forget the New World complete recording of Kern's "Sitting Pretty," which (like these two Gershwin shows) did not produce any hits but is delightful from overture to Finale Ultimo.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great piece of work..........2004-04-22

I purchased this CD after hearing "Snakebite" playing on my local Detroit smooth jazz station. And despite some of the mediocre reviews, this is an excellent piece of work, don;t let anyone fool you. People reminiscing and comparing Lorber's work from bygone decades serve no purpose if you want to hear some superlative work that is infectious, fun, and extremely well produced. Buy it, you won't regret it.

2 out of 5 stars Playing it safe.......2003-10-09

Man,this guy's stuff has sure left me flat over the last 10-15 years. When he collaborated with great R&B singers(some of the names escape me now,but Audrey Wheeler was one),Manhattan Transfer, and The System back in the 80's,he was a top funkasizin' son of a behotch. He's either sold out and went Kenny G,or he's just uninspired.Case in point-my favorite tune(might not be yours, but I hope it's up there) from this one is the title track, written with the amazing Robbie Nevil.I think he should get back to producing other artists.

3 out of 5 stars Ho hum CD.......2002-10-25

This CD wasn't all that in my opinion. I mean, it wasn't the worst thing Jeff has put out, but it's marginal at best.

5 out of 5 stars It's a kick.........2002-10-02

"Kickin' It" is neither the artistic triumph or smooth-jazz pablum that many reviewers have characterized. It's more earthy than most of Jeff Lorber's 1990s output, and has some of the tightest session musicians working in contemporary jazz.

Every song is a delight, though the cover of "Ain't Nobody" does nothing to enhance the song beyond what Rufus & Chaka Khan did orginally. And producer Paul Brown is nowhere to be found, which may come as some solace to Brown haters (of which I am not, but it does seem like he's producing everybody these days)

Sure, Jeff and the gang could have stretched out a little more, but most fans respect his restraint and though it's not a revolution, it's a decent evolution of Jeff Lorber's signature sound.

5 out of 5 stars Lorber Kicks The Homogenize Sound of Smooth Jazz.......2001-05-06

Thank goodness for Jeff Lorber and this excellent piece of work. In a time when all you hear on jazz stations are songs that sound like they were all produced by Paul Brown. This is a breathe of fresh air. Packaged in this musical journey are wonderful melodies, driving beats, funky latin sounds and the beautiful keyboards of Lorber. Included in this CD are great guest horn players like Gerald Albright, Dave Koz, Steve Cole and Richard Elliot. Jeff also backs himself up with the tighest band that I have heard in years. Snakebite track one will set the tone for this musical journey and the fantastic keyboard playing by one of the best. So if you find yourself stuck in the musical dole-drom of smooth jazz. Start Kickin'It with Jeff Lorber.

I saw Hamilton Loomis quite by accident in Des Moines, IA. I had never heard of him until then. What a happy accident! I bought this CD on site and plan to buy others as well. He seems to truly love what he does, and it shows. His music is infectious--funky, bluesy, sort of rock-y. Love it!!

4 out of 5 stars Happy music !!.......2004-08-10

Very enjoyable CD, the best songs are probably the ones written by keyboardist Brant Leeper. "Better Man" is probably my favorite song on the album. Excellent drums by Nico Leophonte. I wish I could find out more about Mike Cross singing back ups on "99 miles", he has such a great voice you'd almost want him to sing the all thing by himself !! Overall, a real good first album, what's next ?

Hamilton's got a great line-up behind him, especially Keyboards/organ player Brant Leeper. Leeper's devil-may-care style keeps getting more refined and polished after years of playing with some of the greats, most notably W.C. Clark.

This is a superb effort, that deserves a lot of attention!

5 out of 5 stars Party with this CD.......2004-11-28

Rebirth Brass Band is off the chain with their tuba-driven New Orleans' funk. Accomplished musicians, yes; but they serve up their Crescent City roots in kingsize portions on every selection. It is on from their first cut. Do not play this CD if you aren't in a location where you can get up & party. Not the CD to be played as background music. This is one of those where you turn up the volume and then throw away the knob.

5 out of 5 stars roll down the window and let the funk out!.......1999-09-23

This CD captures the energy of New Orleans funk. It is overlayed with beats that remind me of Mardi Gras and when ever I listen to it my feet start to move. anyone who likes a good party CD that they can just let play, this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Rare example of a nearly-lost art.......2001-09-16

Okay, I'm a bit prejudiced because 1. I play the harmonica myself and 2. Peg leg is also from my hometown of Spartanburg, SC and we knew some of the same people. That said, this album is interesting because it mostly features some raw, solo harmonica playing that, while recorded around 1970-72, harks back to the earliest forms of African-American entertainment. The "Fox chase," that appears here was once the staple of all pre-blues harmonicists. Peg Leg is somewhat of a legend in Spartanburg and there are stories about him playing the harmonica with his nose and playing 2 harps in his mouth at once (both of which he allegedly does on this CD). I would stronly recommend this for aspiring harmonicists to practice from and for people who are musical historians.

4 out of 5 stars Not As Good As His First, But Still A Nice Album.......2007-07-05

When John Michael Montgomery released his debut album, "Life's A Dance," I breathed a sigh of relief that he might not be another 90's clone. Unfortunately that would not be the case. With each future release, Montgomery became more and more commercial and lacking with his songs. However, "Kickin' It Up" may be weighed down by a few commercial tracks, but it is still an excellent album. The title track falls into the commercial category, along with tunes like the high-energy "Be My Baby Tonight" and "Friday At Five." The better songs on this album were borderline commercial tunes that still showed that Montgomery hadn't been completely drained of his Country soul. Songs like "Rope The Moon" and "If You've Got Love" play to Montgomery's strengths which are singing excellent tender songs that have a hint of meaning to them. The big hit on this album was, in my opinion, not the best. "I Swear" was released by Montgomery and a boy band at almost the same time. It was hugely popular for both of them, but it also made the record companies force Montgomery into the hollow A/C Country vacuum that has killed so many other wonderful careers. From this point on, Montgomery's career slowly spiraled down.

"Kickin' It Up" is not a bad album, but it's also not Montgomery's best. I recommend it to fans of early 90's Country, but the best gems can be found on Montgomery's debut album.

5 out of 5 stars Great country album.......2001-06-09

Wow, from the opening song "Be my baby tonight" which will make you wanna get up and dance till you drop, this album is a killer. His version of "I swear" is so much more romantic than All-4-One's cover. Every song on here is a good song, no filler. A very good album. John Michael has a Garth Brooks type of voice, but is pure country. There is nothing crossover about him. So if you are someone who enjoys real country, you will love this album.

5 out of 5 stars He Sure Is Kicking It Up........2000-06-23

Once I Heard The Romantic Tune "I Swear" I Started Liking It. It Is Really Number 1. It Is John Michael's Best Song Of All Time. The Pop Group All-4-One Did A Remake Of The Song. Other Songs Included On Here Are: "Be My Baby Tonight", "Rope The Moon" And "If You Got Love". This Is A Must Have For Any John Michael Fan.

3 out of 5 stars i swear.......2000-05-01

I listened to the preview of the song "I Swear", and it was pretty good. I would like it if you could start at the beginning of the song and play it for say, 45 seconds? just my opinion.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09

Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

3 out of 5 stars Can't beat the Ballads.......2007-03-25

Well unfortunetly i can't say very much for the upbeat songs on the CD. But the 3 ballads, You Are, Longer then Time and Got to be wherever you are, are worth the cost of the cd alone. They are very good with love ballads. Especially, Got to be wherever you are. That has a serious 70s flavor sound to it. Just like on their previous cd, the song Taste of your love is a definite winner. My advice to them, give up on the dance tunes and stick to the Ballads. That's what they're good at.
