Bassist John Patitucci has retained a certain rhythmic flair from his time with former employer Chick Corea, as well as the more intangible trick of knowing how to inspire great musicians to play as a great band. While most jazz lovers want to hear choice melodies, vibrant arrangements, and meaningful, concise solos, these desires are amplified and concentrated in the professional musician, who knows that improvisation is the proving ground of experience and a window to the artist's soul. Surrounded by an excellent cast, Patitucci supplies melodies and arrangements (many in a Latin vein) that act as springboards to some very edgy and explosive improvisations on Imprint. Drummers Jack DeJohnette and Horacio Hernandez, along with percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo, supply rhythmic fire while the front-line attack is maneuvered by pianists Danilo Perez and John Beasley, as well as tenor saxophonists Mark Turner and Chris Potter. Imprint blisters, with Turner and DeJohnette's muscular mayhem on "Little Steps," Perez and Hernandez's time-tumbling essays on the title track, and Potter's classy playing throughout. Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue" closes the CD with a Patitucci-Hidalgo duet that's a tour de force performance for both. In the best sense of the phrase, this is musicians' music. --Ken Micallef

Album Description

"The switch thrown as raw lightning arcs down the line; violent, consuming the cold form upon the table. Within moments, the power is diminished. 2 out of 5 stars All firepower, no finesse........2006-07-12

Sorry folks, I just wasn't feelin' this one. I've been down with Diesel since System, but this, in my opinion, is his least-desirable album this decade. One thing I did like about this record was its clean production and mastering, thus making it sound good even on low-budget systems. But overall, this record came off as rather soulless to me, which is kind of ironic, considering the title. Technically, it's pretty tight, I admit, but the track selection on both discs is lukewarm at best. Disc 2 was particularly disappointing considering that I dig many of Evol Intent's other (re)mixes. Overall there wasn't a single magical moment or musical miracle in the whole 2+ hours of material, just "hard" beats and rough bass, none of which were fresh or innovative (or even that hard really). If you want sicker melodies, more dramatic breakdowns (and/or reconstructions), or maybe just the periodic emotional/contemplative moment amidst sufficiently hard/dark themes check The Dungeonmaster's Guide, or the even more eargasmic Project Human. If you just want to mosh, headbang, or blast your system at intersections, get this lifeless example of recent Drum n' Bass - which seemingly has become more a stage for adolescent expressions like "hip" and "hard", and less the forum of artistic license and musical advancement that it had briefly become.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely sick dark and hard drum and bass.......2006-05-17

This double album is completely insane. It's worth it for the second disc alone. What Dieselboy started with Project Human and The Dungeonmaster's Guide is assembled perfectly with this collection, and I've never heard a more aggressive, more advanced, more well put together and solid set of tracks. Some say that Dieselboy has lost his roots since System Upgrade, but I say forget that. The Dieselboy "feel" is back and better than ever, and if you like dark drum and bass you have to give this album a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Amazong DnB.......2006-05-13

I really love this CD. You have to dig hard drum and bass to really enjoy this album. Though their are a few lighter songs, most are aggressive drum and bass which will keep your head banging for hours. One of the best things about this double album is the length. Over 2 hours of music for such a small price. Some CD's now adays are less than 40 minutes and they want you to pay 20 bucks for it. I would be willing to pay double for this CD it is so good. An essential album for any drum and bass fan.
5 Stars!

5 out of 5 stars best songwriting of the current day-.......1999-07-25

This CD has it all.. it is deeply introspective, from so many points of view, it reflects life in different lights that aren't thought of every day-the best song on this in my opinion is Circus Girl, this is one example of the amazing aura that Gretchen creates throughout this album. Everyone needs a copy!!

5 out of 5 stars It made me reflect on life and its many meanings........1999-04-20

I loved this album-i had only seen it reviewed as a country album, which didn't do it justice, because this couldn't be put into a specific genre, in my opinion. Every word on this album is so deeply thought out, and the vocals show that Gretchen really put that amount of feeling into it too...i recommend this to anybody who wants to sit back and relax and just listen to a great album with lots of amazing stories.

5 out of 5 stars Whimsical and touching "slices of life".......1999-02-18

Isn't it great when you come across a new artist whom you know will become one of your favorites? For me, Gretchen Peters is one of these. If you like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Cheryl Wheeler, Beth Nielsen Chapman, and Eliza Gilkysen, you will probably like her too. I'm glad this CD has been out for awhile. Hopefully that means there's a new one due in the very near future.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful and thoughtful lyrics. i want more.......1998-08-28

The lyrics are wonderful and thoughtfull. I want another album of the same caliber, please.

5 out of 5 stars TSOL is incredibly intelligent and hasnt a weak cut........1998-05-20

The Secret Of Life is one of the strongest releases I have heard in a long time. Gretchens ability to communicate an idea or emotion is amazing and her vocals are truly beautiful. If you like well written material sung by one who is well versed in evoking thought and feeling, this ones for you.

5 out of 5 stars Sweeeeet.......2007-07-09

This CD along with The HUMAN Resource were the first two CDs I owned by Dieselboy and are to this day my favorite. They have hard driving beats that do not bore like most D&B (even some of Dieselboy's earlier stuff is borderline too repetitive for me). I strongly recommend these beats.

4 out of 5 stars Drum-and-bass's most polished and mature album.......2007-05-05

Dieselboy's Dungeonmaster's Guide is as close to perfect as the genre has ever gotten. What's ironic about it is how misleading the title is. Dungeonmaster's Guide? This won't help you master Dungeons & Dragons, but it will challenge your ears. You would think that an album with such an ambitious title would spawn all original songs, but nope; this is a mix of previous tracks released by other artists remixed by Dieselboy. However, this is a double album of relentless drum-and-bass intensity as only Dieselboy could bring. If you had any wonder on who the best drum-and-bass DJ is and why Dieselboy is so popular in the subculture of electronic music, here is the answer. Dieselboy is known for his perfectionism and Dungeonmaster's Guide is the best example of it. As on 6ixth Session, another solid Dieselboy album, he uses Disc 1 for the mix and Disc 2 for a song collection. The highlight of Disc 1 is the breathtaking "End of the World", one of the greatest electronic songs ever put to tape that perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the disc. Disc 2 isn't quite as stirring as Disc 1, but it is still strong nevertheless. The highlight of Disc 2 is "Studio 54", a very satisfying conclusion to a very accomplished album. A-

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2006-01-20

I've always liked DJ Dara and and Alaska for my dnb needs until someone asked me why I have no Dieslboy in my stock. I laughed and said "he probably sucks compared to Dara." I got Dungeonmaster so I could give it a chance since I'm like that. I'm glad I chose this record as my first choice because this cd is awesome! Woohoo! I didn't like it my first go round but a few days later I popped it in again without those high expectations and I have forgotten how I didn't like it the first time through. GET THIS CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-12-24

I have Dungeonmaster's Guide and I love it! I don't have any Dieselboy cds, so this is the best.

5 out of 5 stars Evolution.......2005-11-22

This album is great. I have all of Dieselboy's other albums and I have to say that this one ranks right beside The 6ixth Session and projectHUMAN for me. For those who have reviewed this with a bit of disappointment and disapproval; guys, you need to come to terms with the fact that Drum & Bass is changing. The music is evolving and there nothing to stop that. The next logical step is for us to accept this and adapt to it. Dieselboy isn't what he used to be because now he seems to be better at what he does best. Go Dieseboy!!

I definetly recommend this album.

"Pay Before You Pump" is former NRBQ guitarist Al Anderson's third solo album, a country rock effort with an emphasis on the rock. When he remakes his song "Lonely Too Long," he allows distortion to creep into his guitar riff; by contrast, Anderson's version of "Without Your Love" is even more quiet and understated than Tippin's, but when Anderson sings, "Danced with the devil in a bottle of whiskey," there's a stark terror in his husky whisper. Music Row hitmaker Bob DiPiero cowrote two songs with Anderson and they're the most country-sounding tracks on "Pay Before You Pump." "Change Is Gonna Do Me Good" (a thinly disguised rewrite of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come") is an old-fashioned gospel hymn, while "Under the Hood" uses more automobile metaphors than you can count. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Flying under the radar.......2004-02-03

Al Anderson is an unspoken music giant of Nashville. Like all ex rock & rollers he is laid up in Nashville still writing and playng good music. I got to see him on Delbert's Blues cruise and he is fantastic. A great guitarist, recently teamed up with Vince Gill on song and video. The album, excuse me CD, is great, part punk on the first cut, tongue in cheek humor, and all great music. Like John Hiatt and Bob Dylan, he just grows on you! If it were not for Al, a good part of Nashville's hat acts would be broke or back working construction. Keep it up Al!

For what it's worth this band is worth listening to. They're not terrible. Real agressive and abusive sound was a bit ahead of it's time. However I have to give this 3 stars because it's a blunt rip off of Pantera's "The Great Southern Trenskill" CD that came out prior to this in 1996. They have Phil Anselmo doing guest vocals one one track to start and topped it off with a song called "Twelve Steps To Nothing" in the wake of Pantera's "Thirteen Steps To Nowhere". ...no, really it's true. Credit is due for first CD to make it big from ripping off at the time under rated Pantera.

One of my fave's from age 15(all vod before tvt was!)..I still own this and it still can cause some serious damage!!

What this is ..is so unique and I will no longer stand by and let faggot ''emo'' poser band's try and ripp this off..THIS BAND IS ONE OF THE ORIGINATOR's for their style of METAL and HARDCORE!!

Tim Williams again spill's hig lung's for us, and the instrument's are FANFUKKINGTASTIC!!! this is even beautiful at time's!!

A MANDATORY LISTEN...TAKE MY WORD FOR IT..AND O SO UNDERATED!!!!

4 out of 5 stars 12 Steps to Hardcore Metal.......2005-06-14

The second full length album by these hardcore maniacs... And surprisingly it is even heavier then their self-titled debut.
IMPRINT is one vicious, raw, album, more metal on this and more insanity... The album begins with "What you Are" and doesn't begin to let up until after track #5 "Imprint" (Also has some Phil Anselmo on "By the River") #6 is "Colorblind" is the highlight of this album... Amazing Lyrics - so much emotion - And it ends with Jada Bloom an epic Metal Romance. Again Tim Williams is truly a poet.

5 out of 5 stars Hardcore + Metal = The Perfect Combination.......2005-04-09

Vision of Disorder did it again. They released another masterpiece. It doesn't sound like the first, but it still sounds extremely wicked. "By The River" is a great track, featuring Pantera/Down/Superjoint Ritual voc box Phil Anselmo. "Imprint", the single, will always remain a classic for me, and so will "What You Are" and "12 Steps Towards Nothing". This is some great stuff here. Great, classic stuff from the vaults of Roadrunner records. Check out Tim William's and Tim Kennedy's new band, Bloodsimple. They bring back the brutality in rock.

5 out of 5 stars Underlying Genius.......2005-02-15

This album is truly incredible. It has an unrelenting power, and I don't just mean it's loud and noisy - which is how a lot of metal/hardcore fans define 'power'. This isn't just noise. This is orchestrated rawness - a contradiction in terms? - not if you can get to grips with this album. It's not just a collection of disjointed tracks, which I fear many similar bands tend to release. It's an intelligent mix of tracks that come together to create a near perfect hardcore album, in my opinion. I grew up on this kinda stuff, it was my staple genre. But recently, a good 6 years after purchasing this album, I dug it back out from the depth of my collection. With a wide grin I put it into the player and that grin remained for the duration of "Imprint". I fear that there is an underlying genius to this album that the majority of people can not appreciate. I wasn't really a huge fan of the first album, but "For the Bleeders" and the new album "From Bliss to Devastation" are both brilliant albums. "Imprint" however is a level above. It's not brilliant, its genius and it's VOD at their best. I hope you enjoy this album as much and for as long as I have.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2003-06-02

As a huge fan of the old school Marley/Tosh/Wailer/Culture school of late 60s - late 70s reggae, it's alwasy touch to find somethign new that captures the bass-heavy tight grooves. This is a totally modern take (electronica dub but with SOUL) on that old stuff. Very cool. I listen to this a lot.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice!.......2003-01-06

I pretty much bought this cd because it was a compilation that had "Superstylin'" on it which is my favourite Groove Armada song, so I figured it'd be nice to see what else falls under the category. The minute I pushed play I was sucked into this groovy sort of place that I don't hear from quite often enough. I'd say anyone who likes Derrick Carter or Moonshine label artists could appreciate this cd. Nice reggae/drum&bass/house/psychedelic sounds brewing with this one.

If you have never heard the pure, raw sound of Bob Woodruff's vocals, you MUST give it a listen. His songs are pure, not to mention his voice..The majority of the songs are highly uplifting! Great for a road trip!!! If you can get your hands on his first CD, "Dreams & Saturday Night", it is definately worth the search as well!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME ALTERNATIVE COUNTRY!!!.......1998-11-09

Though not as powerful as his debut album, Bob Woodruff again has proven how totally devoid of any direction country radio is. People like Chris Knight, the Delevantes and other struggling artists are overlooked so we can get chocked to death with artists like Vince Gill and Shania Twain. Bob Woodruff deserves a listen. Hist talents are trully overlooked. J. Henson

5 out of 5 stars BEST ONE YET.......2001-04-25

This is by far the best album john has put out in awile, dont believe the other reviews listed here, those people must have just listened once and put it down. After a couple listens this album proves to be one of the best compasitional albums that john has put out, just listen to track #1 and u will know why they call this man king kong.

2 out of 5 stars Volatility.......2000-06-03

For sure John is one the best bass players, ever! It happens that this album is quite "difficult" to listen to. You get started with some Cuban-African music and all the sudden you find yourself inside some standard-type piece. What bothers me is the volatility of this album. However if you like good jazz, try NOW (NOW is his former album), by the way, the best Patitucci's record.

3 out of 5 stars He is changed!.......2000-03-04

After listening this CD from my friend's home, I wonder if I should buy his music again. Frankly, I still want he will change his music because his music in Electric Band gave me more memory than the "acoustic" one. I couldn't say this CD is bad, but I somehow feel bored. Personally, I listen more classical music than anything. But, I would rather listening his electric bass sound more than this. As a fans of him, I would buy one for my collection...otherwise...!

While aging metalheads wave their glory swords and young shags pray at the altar of the retro stoner sound, Brooklyn's Candiria are miles ahead--in the jazz-influenced, Blue Note sense. The music is extremely aggressive, but not a raging ride through hellfire like that of so many of their former death metal compatriots. Especially on this showcase of oddities and rarities, Candiria's strength is its cool interconnecting polyrhythm of oceanic slates of controlled mayhem.

The first disc of this collection is a foray through studio rarities with wide-eyed appearances by Method Man's "Bring the Pain" and at least 117 eye-opening instrumental breaks. Though the band's chops and love of odd timing are worthy of music conservatorians, Candiria admirably keeps its assault aimed toward hard-core punk and metal venues, luring the moshpit into a crazed hungry state of confusion as guitars, drums, and screeching staccato vocal raps intermesh in a roar of asynchronous bliss. Disc two here is a sampler of bands from Candiria's C.O.M.A. collective--an array of launching points into various mental sonic terrains. All are good, but none play metal, and metallic intensity is what pushes Candiria's own eclecticism over the top to the point of brilliant revelation. With each release, Candiria's blend of grind-core, hard-core, jazz, rap, and electronica grows slightly smoother and stronger. Whether or not they ever perfect the synthesis, the struggle itself is a splendid, surprising example to be followed. --Ian Christe

5 out of 5 stars RAISING the BAR.......2004-12-31

As I walked into the music store my ears IMMEDIETLY took note. Like a magnet I was drawn to the corner where the speaker hang. For 2 minutes straight my head was slowly bobbing in awe with mouth wide open. Called my freind over, said "listen to this, this is it!" Metal/fusion/jazz/hip-hop all blended together to form what I would consider one of the best collections of METAL talent. A sound with hints of Sepultura, Pantera, Sacred Reich, Soulfly, Hatebreed and Primus among others. The crunchiest and tightest of rhythms segway into offbeat jazz that make you wonder if this drummer has 8 arms and a computer brain. Gangsta-rap meets Marley only to be obliviated by riffs that would make a grandma bang her head. An extraordinary blend of metal phenoms capped by killer vocals, crazy growls and a feeling of rage raise this band to the top of the CD collection. A real treat!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars not for everyone.......2004-12-02

Hardcore meets jazz meets hiphop. Don't think rapmetal or numetal. This stuff is good. But yeah, it's definitely not for everyone, as a lot of more traditional metalheads would dislike it. It took me a bit to get into it, but now I like it a lot.

If you've never heard Candiria, isten to all the clips before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars candiria rules, i am suprised.......2004-03-03

well, i was told by a friend how awesome candiria is. I have never heard them before. so today i was in a store and i was looking for something cool to buy. i found various cds that i would have liked to purchase. i was about to make a said purchase when i happend to remember my said friend saying how good they are and that i should check them out. now, i hardly ever make a purchase without hearing the band before, i can count on my hand the number of times i have done this and proably still have some fingers left over. well anyway, i went to the candiria section and bought the only cd they had one of them, which is obviously this one. Well, I must say i am pretty blown away by them. they blend rap, jazz, and metal like no other band i've heard. i mean, this isn't some faint jazz beats they have put in the music: it's jazz to the core. there is one song on here that has bongo drums, screaming, and heavy guitar...all at the same time, blending into a awesome song. This is probalby the most diverse metal band I have ever heard. track 3 and 11 are pure instrumental jazz tracks, and track 6 is a shorter instrumental that lends amazingly into the chaos that is track 7.

there is another disk that comes with this but I will not say anything about it. it's just a preview of the artists that are going to be on candiria's own record label THE COMA IMPRINT. some of the songs on there are crap but a few are decent. basically, this disk is a throwaway and i won't ever listen to it again.

thankfully, even with this double cd set, it's still regular price so you are still only paying for the amazing candiria cd. I have been told that this is a remastred, rerecording of one of their first, hard to find cds, all the songs have been added too and stuff. pretty cool idea if i do say so myself.

all in all, this my first candiria album and it will not be my last. i will buy another from them ASAP :)

5 out of 5 stars No Words Could Describe.......2003-12-22

I heard about Candiria through Music Choice Channel and I was compelled to buy their newest cd. I had only heard a bit of "Paradigm Shift" (that just tells you how compelled i was). What I found was a collection of tracks that seem like the soundtrack to a dream. With insane rap/screaming vocals and a seamless blend of jazz and tribals drums. It's an experience that will inspire you. Candiria's lyrics are the weirdest i've ever read (cuz you cant make out what he's saying). It's awesome, the COMA Imprint is an experiment and it works.

5 out of 5 stars Candiria ef-ing shreds, kenneth and carley are incredible!!!.......2003-12-10

With jazz-trained kenneth, relentless growls and screams from carley, and intense riffs, Candiria is my favorite band as of right now. I recommend anyone who knows anything about music, especially any drummers out there, that they pick this record up along with "The process of self-development" and 300 percent density. It will blow your mind and expand your musical capacity.

3 out of 5 stars It's ok but.......2002-01-06

this is lounge, not deep house as I had expected. I was expecting to get my dance on, but this is not the disc for that, this is a cool down disc.

5 out of 5 stars XLR8R Magazine.......2001-05-18

Nary a four to the floor tune graces this collection, which places emphasis on the melodic and the funky. Downtempo, sophisticated and surreal in quality, Hi-Fidelity House is intoxicatingly chilled funk/house awash with synths, strings and silky pianos. All this courtesy of protaganists such as King Britt, Dubtribe Sound System and Pat Barry, all of whom proffer the most sophisticated fare. Even for those heads with a penchant for a more frenetic variety of house, this provides the soundtrack to your inevitable club comedown. In the same vein as the highly succesful Back to Mine series, Hi-Fidelity House is delightfully laid back and unabashadly [attractive].

5 out of 5 stars Wallpaper Magazine.......2001-05-17

From Miami to Helsinki, producers have been toiling day and night to create the perfect summer soundtrack. As ever the Guidance vibe is understated, with groovy headphone house giving this collection its true beach potential. Key seaside moment here is Venus Attack Projects'"Riviera Paradise", an instrumental celebration of yachts, topless sunbathing and shamelessly wearing all your jewelry to the beach

5 out of 5 stars DJ Magazine.......2001-05-07

Over the years the name Guidance has become synonymous with sexy deep house music. More recently they've made some very positive moves in to hip hop territory, but it's house that's made them what they are today. The 'Hi Fidelity' series is testament to this quality and with the likes of Jazzanova, King Britt, Wamdue Music, Kevin Yost and Dubtribe all contributing exclusive tracks to this volume it's easy to see why it's so good. The vibes are spacious and groovy, the cuts ranging from straight-up house to jazz-tinged downtempo beakers. Great listening for mature heads.

5 out of 5 stars THe Label.......2001-04-18
