5 out of 5 stars The Definitive "Firebird"!!.......2004-06-28

There are numerous recordings available of Igor Stravinsky's ballet masterwork "The Firebird" however, the 1961 "Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky" recording available on this disc is one that eclipses all other versions. The recording was performed by The Columbia Symphony and is presented in its complete length of nearly 43-minutes (most other recordings present "The Firebird" in a suite lasting only 25-minutes). The performance under Stravinsky's baton is nothing short of breathtaking. The piece's dynamics, shifting rhythms and unprecidented beauty are all clearly defined and wonderfully executed.
Also included on the disc are two Scherzo pieces ("Scherzo a la Russe" and "Scherzo Fantastique Op.3") along with a recording of "Fireworks", a piece composed for the wedding of the daughter of Stravinsky's friend and teacher Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. These three shorter works also include Stravinsky's signature rhythms and dynamic orchestrations (especially in the "Scherzo Fantastique" which echoes "The Firebird" in some spots).
This is a fantastic CD of some of Stravinsky's finest work conducted by the composer himself. Hearing Stravinsky conduct his own work brings a certain authenticity to the music. You hear exactly the way the composer wishes the music to be executed.
If you enjoy this, pick the other two discs in the "Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky" series ("Petrushka/The Rite Of Spring" and "Symphony of Psalms/Symphony in C/Symphony in Three Movements"). These recordings are just as refreshing and exciting as "The Firebird".

5 out of 5 stars Essential Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky.......2003-07-28

Unfortunately, we will never get to hear Bach play the organ, or Mozart the piano, or Beethoven conduct the 5th Symphony. But thanks to the advent of recording technology, we have been able to hear the great composers of the 20th Century play and conduct their own work. Sadly, recordings of the likes of Elgar, Strauss and Rachmaninov are all in early mono, but there are several brilliant stereo recordings available by Copland and Stravinsky. These recordings of "Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky" were made for CBS in the early 1960s, and along with two other discs (featuring the Rite of Spring with Petrushka, and the other one the Symphonies), are absolutely essential for serious fans of classical music. Often composers were not the best conductors of their own work (their expertise was first and foremost in composing), but they are nonetheless a vital document of their creative and versatile talents. For serious Stravinsky fans I would recommend getting both the Decca Stravinsky Box Set conducted by Ernest Ansermet (see my review), and the three CBS Masterworks titles of "Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky." That way you can compare and contrast, and determine for yourself whether Stravinsky himself was truly the best conductor of Stravinsky.

4 out of 5 stars Sonny James is now in the Hall of fame!!.......2007-01-11

I wanted Sonny's music before he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. He was always on my stereo during the 60's and then I kind of lost him. Now he is back.

5 out of 5 stars Ron Pruitt.......2005-09-30

It is getting harder to find real country music these days; it is refreshing to be able to here what the genre should sound like or at least resemble. This is well mastered and a treat to listen to. If you like Sonny's music this is a must.

5 out of 5 stars the complete columbia & monument hits.......2005-08-14

I was looking for some of the "oldies" and these are great!
Brings back lots of good memories

4 out of 5 stars 70's and 80's recordings.......2003-10-03

The southern gentlemen Sonny James was a major hitmaker in the 50's thru the early 80's. This collection begins in 1972 when Sonny left Capitol for Columbia. Sonny had a long string of hits for the label in the 70's and then went to Monument with moderate chart sucsess. This collection is very good but not as good as his vintage Capitol recordings. Collector's Choice music is excellent in providing collectors with music they want but can't find elsewhere. Sonny James should be in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Amazon.com essential recording

It is interesting to note that, despite the mature and sober themes, the Stanley Brothers were relatively young men at the time of these 22 triumphs. When they signed with Columbia in the fall of 1947, lead vocalist Carter was 23 and tenor vocalist and banjo player Ralph was 21. Though Monroe, Flatt, and Scruggs were spearheading the bluegrass movement with fiery licks, the Stanleys looked to older mountain music for their inspiration. Using traditional Appalachian folk forms, the Stanleys created an original and memorable songbook filled with poignant songs of mother, God, murder, and death. With piercing, mournful harmonies (sung by Ralph and mandolinist Pee Wee Lambert), songs such as "A Vision of Mother," "The White Dove," "The Drunkard's Hell," "The Fields Have Turned Brown," "The Lonesome River," and "A Life of Sorrow" remain potent, genre-defining statements. Even when the tempos are jaunty--as on classics such as "Little Glass of Wine," "Man of Constant Sorrow," and the banjo-fueled "Pretty Polly"--the subjects are deep and dark. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars early stanley brothers.......2006-11-10

it's original early bluegrass and it's "complete." not rip-roaring like bill monroe and flatt and scruggs but easily more powerful. must own for anybody who calls themselves a bluegrass fan.

5 out of 5 stars SWEET BODY AND SOUL SETTLEIN MUSIC.......2006-05-22

This is the kind of music that sooths your soul.I go to sleep listenin to this CD often.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Stanley Brothers to get first.......2006-03-20

And if you're new to the genre, perhaps the bluegrass CD period to get first. With the exception of the Carter family, I've never heard harmonies that sound this absolutely inspired and otherworldly. And like the Carter family, these songs succintly concern similar thematic territory: parent's dying, a better life in heaven, lost love. The bluegrass played by the Stanley Brothers looks directly to the mountain music of the Appalachian Mountains for inspiration, which they mixed with the contemporary (at the time) edge of the Bill Monroe that defined the bluegrass genre. There is so much depth and real life experience that easily comes through in these songs. This is music that will be listened to forever. I doubt that the feeling that these musicians so easily put forth could be successfully copied or reproduced by anyone with anything that approach the warmth and emotion of these recordings.

I'm not quite sure if any CD release of the same material matches this compilation (recording between 1949 - 1952) in terms of sound quality. And if sound quality is concern, these mono recordings sound as rich and flawless as just about anything recorded at the time (there is some unobtrusive crackling sounds), and I assume that Columbia Records has worked hard to skillfully remaster this music of the Stanley Brothers at their prime.

5 out of 5 stars composer note.......2005-06-22

To those who think Carter wrote "Man of Constant Sorrow", he didn't. As far as can be ascertained, it was originally an Appalachian mountain song of unknown origin. Richard Burnett, a blind singer/banjoist/fiddler from Monticello, Kentucky (home of many bluegrass greats), wrote the lyrics we know today, and called it "Farewell Song". It is thought that this version was copyrighted, or just written, about 1913, dating it from the year when Burnett was blinded, about 1907 (see the lyrics). Subsequent versions by Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, Carter Stanley, etc., have been copyrighted with slightly changed lyrics, but all are based on Richard Burnett's version.

It's a fascinating story. Burnett recorded with a guy called Rutherford. I am presently searching for a copy of Burnett singing the song. Wish me luck!

5 out of 5 stars Carter's song........2003-04-24

I know that carter wrote man of constant sorrow
but I never heard him sing it. other than to help
out on the chorus. I know he wrote the song for
Ralph. it has to be just a sample of what Carter
was capable of writing and Ralph's voice out shines
any soul singer I have ever heared.
I grew up in dickenson county about five miles from
Carter and Ralph so they have been my heros since
the late fortys. as far as I'm concerned Carter
Stanley was and still is the greatest (singer)that
ever lived bar none.

Some call it transitional music. Everything Miles did was transitional.
What a great band. Everyone soars, great Wayne, Herbie's touch, Ron's the center, Tony's the key, Miles... just funks up my bag.

5 out of 5 stars ARGUABLY THE MOST INTERESTING PERIOD OF MILES' CAREER.......2006-03-18

This remarkable box set focuses on a period of Miles Davis' career that many jazz neophytes tend to overlook. A great deal of attention is spent on Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain and Bitches Brew - all deservedly so - but each of them represent only a portion of Davis' musical scope. Of all the stylistic changes that Miles Davis undertook, few had been as adventurous and rewarding as the work he created with his second `classic' quintet lineup, featuring Wayne Shorter on saxophone, Herbie Hancock on keyboard, Ron Carter on bass and the explosive Tony Williams on drums.
Unlike the most popular works of Miles Davis, this is not easy listening music, not by any means. The music created by this quintet is challenging and demanding, which is precisely why it is so extraordinary. Repeated listening continues to pay dividends, in spades. Difficult, angular arrangements constantly veer off into ingenious, mind-boggling directions. Following the supple movements of this rhythm section is about as difficult as chasing a kitten, but soloists Davis and Shorter (and Hancock, too, who is a major component of the rhythm section and a startling soloist as well) never seem to lose their footing. It is jazz music as an intricate game of prodding and suggestion, able to go in virtually any direction, with all five members listening to each other with an intensity that most musicians could only aspire to.

4 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for the music, 3 for the box.......2006-02-27

Although I am a huge Miles Davis fan (His Autobiography is essential reading), I was hesitant to make such a lump-sum investment in this boxed set, even at $70.00 for the 2004 re-issue. However, after reading most of the reviews here and listening to sound bites, I decided to pick it up. I have mixed emotions about my purchase.

First of all, the music is astounding! I concur with most of the other reviews regarding the music, and have nothing to add except to emphasize that every jazz fan MUST own these historical recordings. I honestly can't believe I have been on this earth for three decades, a jazz fan for one, and never owned this music before.

On the other hand, I was disappointed in the packaging. Yes, Todd Coolman's essay, "The Quintet" is revealing and informative, and the packaging has some rare photos that are fantastic additions. However, notably absent are the liner notes and artwork of the original album releases from which these six discs derive most of their material! I was planning to savor the original album art of "E.S.P.", "Miles Smiles", "Sorcerer", "Nefertiti", "Water Babies", "Miles in the Sky", and "Filles de Kilimanjaro", and to read what was written about the musicians and music on these albums when they were released. So, I was disappointed that this classic jazz was not accompanied by these historic visual representations of the music.

Still, the music itself is worth any price. The alternate takes and previously unissued tracks are great, and I personally enjoyed the chronological arrangement of the music. This boxed set is highly recommended and essential if this is how you plan to purchase this music. However, if you want the rest of the history surrounding these recordings, I suggest picking up the individual albums.

5 out of 5 stars From Here You Can Listen For Miles.......2006-02-02

I bought this handsome 6-CD retrospective because I wanted to dig into the birth of fusion, and Miles Davis gets the credit. The booklet is excellent, very informative. I knew that it covered the Miles Davis Quintet from 1965-68, and that the material from many landmark albums was included. (E.S.P., Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, Nefertiti, and Miles In The Sky). Dollar for dollar, that's a very efficient buy - each CD is over 70 minutes long. The material makes good on the promise, it reaches from traditional jazz all the way through to pre-Silent Way, Brew long jams. Really fascinating, diverse, beautiful, and thoroughly listenable music. The Davis Quintet creates its own atmosphere, almost its own vocabulary.

As I played one CD after another, I became happier and happier about buying 6 Miles Davis CDs. But I realized something rather obvious that I had overlooked. This was an all-star quintet. I had also purchased 6 Tony Williams CDs, and he has never sounded better. Same for Herbie Hancock, who, at the time, was something of an enfant terrible. Same for Wayne Shorter who simply smokes like a southbound train. Same for Ron Carter who had the nice habit of quietly turning up on just about every jazz record worth listening to in those days. I read recently that Davis wasn't a technical virtuoso and I guess that's true. But he had a genius for picking talent and he was certainly a visionary. This superb collection showcases some of the most interesting and pivotal music of its day. Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars One of the all-time best Miles Davis box sets.......2005-06-04

"Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-1968" features nothing less than some of Miles' best music. This box set showcases many of Davis' most innovative albums including "E.S.P.," "Miles Smiles," "Sorcerer," "Nefertiti" and "Miles in the Sky." While the music leans towards psychedelia and the impending fusion movement, this is still jazz by any stretch of the imagination. The mood is cool, intelligent and laid back. While the box set documents the inevitable introduction of electric instruments, it is a gentle preamble. The electric piano is a mere suggestion and the plugged in guitar seems light years away from squealing Jimi Hendrix type power chords. While [...] Brew would eventually pass the point of no return, these six discs suggest mind expansion, but never cross the line. With this 2004 reissue, the listener gets the same music as on the original box set release but for about $30.00 less. Considering that this reissue also comes with a handsome full-color booklet, it is a mystery as to why anyone would pay an additional thirty dollars for the original. The Amazon description claims that this contains additional tracks. While this has tracks not found on the 60's releases, this reissue has the same music found on the 1998 box set. If you've always wanted Miles' 'light trip' music in one place, the "Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-1968" is the perfect box set.

5 out of 5 stars More Today Than Yesterday ?Yes!!.......2006-12-24

This an excellent collection for people who enjoy good ,happy, sing along songs. It just baffles my mind that bands like The Monkees, Grand Funk, and others get ridiculed so badly."More Today Than Yesterday" is just an awesome song. How can anyone not smile when they hear it?It's like being unamerican or something of that nature.Pat Upton is a great singer and the band is no slouch either. All the songs are great(Listen to "Get Ready" and you should be convinced)and "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" is just so appealing. If you don't believe me just take a moment and listen. You won't be disappointed.Highly reccomended!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars misunderstood?.......2007-05-27

apparently some people don't understand what this album is. it is not a soundtrack of the first two games, nor is it a "tribute" or "songs inspired by katamari" album. it is a soundtrack of the third Katamari game PLUS the songs from the first two games that were NOT INCLUDED on the first two soundtracks.

1 out of 5 stars More of a tribute than a soundtrack.......2007-03-08

This cd is actually more of a tribute to the game, rather than an accurate soundtrack. If you're looking for the music from the original game, you need to go track down an album called, "Katamari Damashii Soundtrack: Katamari fortissimo Damashii". That's the cd with all the original music. It's published by Columbia (Catalog # COCX-32760). You'll know you have the right one, by the cover which resembles the original game's cover. (Cows in pasture, rainbow). I got a hold of a copy from a Hong Kong exporter.

5 out of 5 stars Again, a Namco Compilation.......2006-03-02

The First CD is all the missing songs from Minna Daisuki Katamari Damashii (Everybody Loves Katamari Damacy(We Love Katamari)) and all the NEW songs from Boku No Watashi No Katamari Damashii (My My Katamari Damashii(Me and My Katamari)). I also imported the game, and the music is quite good, but getting even farther from the original Katamari Damashii (Katamari Damacy). The game itself has better music, only because of the fact they have some of the great original songs. Que Sera Sera, Lonely Rolling Star, Disco Prince, Moon and the Prince. Gooooooood stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Soundtrack.......2006-02-19

No, it's not all of the songs from the Katamari Damacy series, it's the soundtrack for Boku No Watashi No Katamari Damacy, also known as Me and my Katamari. I have the import game and it's very good, and this soundtrack includes the new songs from that game, and some missing ones from We Love Katamari. The new songs, such as Shabadoobie, Jesus Island, and Family Damacy are VERY good and up to the usual standard of Katamari greatness. The 2nd disc of this soundtrack is a lot of classical pieces, that I suppose are found in We Love Katamari, but I should play through again to find out. If you're wanting some new Katamari songs from an excellent game, I definitely recommend this. If you really want the past soundtracks, then buy them.

3 out of 5 stars ditto.......2006-02-02

Just as the other guys say this is not the songs from Katamari Damashi, and yes it should be pronounced Damashi not Damacy because Japanese people cannot pronounce the "CY" sound. After realizing these were not the songs from the game, which did not take long, I decided to give it a good listen to any ways. I did like a few of the songs Like "Katamari on the Funk" but it is not a must buy. This product is totally misleading but Ok.

The seven CDs of Seven Steps chronicle the formative period of Davis's "Second Great Quintet" from its first arrival, bassist Ron Carter in the spring of 1963, to its last, tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter in the fall of 1964.

The set begins with the West Coast studio session for the Seven Steps to Heaven LP, with Miles, Carter, and tenor saxophonist George Coleman joined by L.A. musicians Victor Feldman (piano) and Frank Butler (drums). Then it's off to New York where Miles would cover the same material with Herbie Hancock in the piano chair and Tony Williams on drums. (The original LP selected tracks from each group, but all the tracks from both sessions are here, including unissued alternate takes.) The rest of the set features concert performances in which the band plays established Davis anthems along with a few choice standards. The leader is inspired throughout, lashing out with passion and urgency on trumpet that's clearly fuelled by the young and extraordinary rhythm section bubbling underneath him--Hancock shows an uncanny ability to shape a group's performance on a number of levels, balanced by the steady Carter and the incendiary Williams, whose drumming is both polyrhythmic and consistently, freely lyrical.

In some ways, the set is a search for the right tenor saxophonist, but all are contenders. The polished Coleman constructs solos with remarkable tension curves. Sam Rivers is a startling presence, pressing the envelope with pin-wheeling runs and an assortment of accelerated bleats that highlight the rhythm section's avant-garde sympathies. However, the arrival of Shorter is unquestionably the highpoint, as the group dialogue developed by Davis and the rhythm section finally meets its perfect complement in Shorter's complex, multi-dimensional playing. As with Columbia's previous Davis sets, Seven Steps is another triumph of design, sound, and documentation. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars Seven Steps: The search for the 2nd great quintet.......2007-05-29

Although I already owned much of the material presented on this sprawling 7 CD box set, I bought it for completist reasons like most of the folks who love Miles. It is a musical document of Davis in transition. Coltrane had split from Davis in 1960, and other crucial personnel (Kelly, Chambers) were soon to depart as well. By 1963, Davis was ready to hit the road again. This box set chronicles the story of his search and formation of what was to become the 2nd great Miles Davis quintet. This group was poised to take jazz music to the next level.

As a whole, the music on this box set is excellent. Although the box set is a bit pricey, we are treated to previously unissued studio tracks as well as "complete" concert performances (including the proper sequence of the 64 Lincoln Center concert). I also need to mention that the sound quality (with the exception of the mono "In Europe" '63 Antibes show) on these tracks is exceptional, as the music is sonically superior, given the 24 bit digital remastering treatment.

From this writer's perspective, the heart of this box set is arguably the February 1964 Lincoln Center concert. The band was "on" this night and the listener gets treated to definitive performances of just about every song. Although saxophonist George Coleman was considered too conservative (he was later to be replaced by Wayne Shorter, considered by his bandmates to be the perfect fit for their evolving musical exploration and ideas), he was on fire at this concert. The overall playing and ability of all five members as represented here at Lincoln Center equals nothing short of musical perfection. In particular, discs 4 & 5 showcases the extraordinary talents of five individuals who appear to be able to lock in and communicate telepathically with one another. In particular, the musical interaction of the rhythm section (Hancock, Carter and Williams) at this venue is simply outstanding.

There is much more that I could add about the music contained in this box set. As stated previously, this is a document of a transitional period in the life of Miles Davis. However, it is certainly not insignificant or "throw away" music. Yes, there are a few "standard" selections from the Miles Davis songbook that are repeated on several of the live concerts presented here, however, the band takes risks and pushes the musical envelope- stretching the boundaries on this material, thus creating exciting and rewarding music for the listener. From this writer's perspective, the music on this box set is exceptional (and still holds up by today's standards), and is another must have for the serious Miles Davis collector.

5 out of 5 stars The Story of the Birth of the Second Quintet.......2007-02-02

After Miles' first great quintet had disbanded, he was at a point of transition. Though he soldiered on for a couple of years with Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, a group that produced some amazing music (Someday My Prince Will Come, Friday and Saturday Nights At The Blackhawk), he wasn't breaking any new ground artistically. And though that period of his career rates as a favorite with many a Miles fan, Miles himself was not exceedingly happy with the group (Mobley in particular), feeling that he was in an artistic "rut" of sorts. It was around this time that Kelly, Chambers and Cobb left the group to pursue their own interests, effectively leaving Miles without a group, and thus beginning a transition that would culminate with his soon-to-be legendary second quintet.

The story begins in 1963, with Miles putting together a new group and laying down tracks for his next record, Seven Steps To Heaven. The new group began with tenor saxophonist George Coleman and bassist Ron Carter. Drummer Frank Butler was enlisted, though Miles really wanted 17-year-old prodigy Tony Williams, who had commitments at the time with Jackie McLean. Pianist Victor Feldman rounded out the group, and brought along some fresh and lyrical new material ("Joshua" and "Seven Steps To Heaven"). Feldman declined Davis' offer to join the band, so Davis went back to New York and finished the record with Herbie Hancock on piano and Tony Williams on drums, who was now free from his commitment with McLean. It was evident from the first session that the group was going to be special; it was Williams' amazing ability and propulsive force that drove the group and forced everyone else to play beyond their abilities. Miles knew that Williams (and his feel for the "new thing") was needed to guide him towards developing a new sound, so he relied heavily upon his direction and advice during the formation of this group. Disc one (and half of disc two) contains the entire album Seven Steps To Heaven, along with previously unreleased rehearsal and alternate takes.

Starting midway through disc two, this set chronicles Miles' new group as they experiment with the tenor chair, beginning with their appearance at the Antibes Festival in France (released in 1964 as Miles Davis In Europe). Though the set still consists of the same mixture of Miles' "hits" from the Coltrane era and standards (along with the new Feldman tunes), the band managed to stretch and mold the material into an entirely new form, almost unrecognizable from previous arrangements. Williams drives the group, often at breakneck tempos, controlling the tempo with his frenetic ride cymbal work, pushing and pulling the meter and pulling out all the polyrhythmic stops. His mastery of the drums is flat out amazing and unprecedented (and still unmatched), regardless of age. His arrival on the scene totally changed the way jazz drummers would play from that point on, and many an experienced veteran was sent back to the woodshed after hearing him for the first time.

The real highlight of this set is discs four and five, which consist of the entire performance at the Philharmonic Hall in New York on Feb. 12, 1964, which had been released in 1965 and 1966 as My Funny Valentine and Four & More, respectively. The entire concert is presented for the first time in its entirety, and includes a previously unreleased version of "Autumn Leaves." This recording represents this incarnation of the group at its absolute finest, as the play with a passion and intensity that results in an invigorating and uplifting experience. The band's intensity may have been borne of the fact that Miles had just informed them before going onstage that their usual earnings were being donated to charity that evening, which enraged the group to the point of exchanging words with the leader. Miles himself suggests in his autobiography that their anger was responsible for their frenetic performance; he also says that Coleman played that night better than he's ever heard him play.

It was Coleman, however, that was the one piece of the puzzle that still was not quite the right fit. He plays throughout this set with a brilliantly melodic ease, with clean and lyrical lines firmly entrenched in the bebop tradition. Williams was dissatisfied with Coleman's playing, however, which he thought was too traditional for his tastes. Likewise, the group was a bit too adventurous for Coleman's tastes, so he left and was replaced at Williams' urging by Sam Rivers. The sixth disc of this set features Rivers on the album Miles In Tokyo, which had been released in 1969 as and was previously available only in Japan. Rivers is an intriguing option, sort of the anti-Coleman, if you will, with his angular and often guttural sound that skirted the boundaries of tradition and form and eschewed traditional bebop clichés. Regardless of who is manning the tenor chair, the group remains cohesive and inspired, and often explosive.

Ultimately, Rivers proved to be a bit too far out for what Miles was looking for, which was exploratory, yet still respective of the boundaries of time, melody and structure. Upon returning from Tokyo, Miles received word that Wayne Shorter was now free from his commitment with Art Blakey, so he immediately offered him the job. Shorter proved to be just what Miles was looking for, the perfect compromise between Coleman's melodic traditionalism and Rivers' exploratory modernism. In addition to being a fine soloist, Shorter was a great writer, whose compositions brought to the quintet the infusion of new material it had so sorely needed. The final disc consists of a recording of the band's appearance in Berlin, which was released in 1969 as Miles In Berlin, and was previously only available in Germany. This disc captures Shorter still settling in a bit, though it is immediately evident that his distinct voice is a perfect fit for the group, thus concluding an 18-month audition for a saxophonist.

5 out of 5 stars Labor pains have never been so pleasurable........2006-05-16

This box set begins with a false start (a session in LA with a pick-up group), but then bursts into flower as Miles acquires a rhythm section of mere kids; those kids, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and particluarly seventeen year-old tinderbox Tony Williams, light such a blaze that they will propel the leader from the massive re-working of his live-set documented here (the continuous sets played without breaks between songs, breakneck tempos, or else abrupt shifts in tempo, a return to modal playing not heard from Miles since Kind of Blue), to the edge of Free Jazz (documented in the Plugged Nickel box), to a whole new songbook of originals that sound shockingly Ornette Coleman-ish (the ESP box set) and finally into r&b grooves and electricity. All in just four years. No artist in jazz ever mutated so quickly, and as Miles says of this group, "It wasn't all me, it was them too."

This box covers the first stage of that extraordinary journey. It could well be dubbed the search for the saxophonist, as the band picks up then discards hard-boppish George Coleman, avant gardist Sam Rivers, and finally splits the difference stylistically by settling on Wayne Shorter. Aside from two perfunctory studio dates on the first disc, we then get four concerts from 1963-64(Antibes and the famous CORE concert with Coleman, a Tokyo date with Rivers, and a Berlin date with Shorter); much of the repertory is the same from show to show, but I feel that actually increases rather than diminishes the interest of this box; for in the great jazz tradition, Heraclitus-like,these improvisors never approach the material the same way twice. These recordings are transitional, a warm-up for the material on the ESP and Plugged Nickel box sets; But Miles Davis' transitional periods would be considered masterpieces for most other artists. Plus, none of these concerts have ever been released complete and un-edited before, the CORE concert (originally split artificially into ballads and fast numbers) has been restored to its proper order, and the sound is spectacular. Finally, note-for-note, this might be the most technically perfect trumpet playing of Miles' career. His high-notes, virgin territory for him, are hair-raising, and he would never play at such untrammelled length again. This alone makes this set mandatory.

4 out of 5 stars Some of Miles' Best Playing.......2006-02-28

Yes, this set gets a little repetitive. But I like it because 1) the studio sessions are gorgeous, a continuation of the ideas laid down on "Kind of Blue", 2) it actually is interesting to compare Coleman and Rivers and Shorter, and 3) this is some of Mile's best playing, studio or live. He is inspired by the new band, and he is on FIRE.

4 out of 5 stars Music in between eras........2005-11-04

Some music invariably slips through the cracks, particularly when a musician has as enormous a catalog as Miles Davis. Certainly, "Seven Steps: The Complete Columbia Miles Davis 1963-1964" covers one such period. Admittedly, it's an easy period to overlook-- after the triumphs of John Coltrane's tenure with the band and the brilliant collaborations with Gil Evans, Davis was tapped out. Coltrane left the band in 1960, his replacement Hank Mobley never seemed to work out, and the rhythm section left en masse.

So Davis began gathering a new band, starting with tenor saxophonist George Coleman and bassist Ron Carter. Coleman, unrecognized, was a sax player who could match Davis both in energy and lyricism, while Carter was one of those rare virtuosos of the bass who could make just about everyone stop in their tracks. Davis briefly worked with pianist Victor Feldman and drummer Frank Butler in the studio in 1963 before completing his first small-band studio record in two years with pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Tony Williams. In Hancock and Williams, he had musicians who could play straight, but who were also interested in the burgeoning avant-garde movement, and who would eventually help push Davis to the free jazz line.

"Seven Steps to Heaven" proved to be the only studio session Davis would do until 1965-- the album itself is a bit fractured with the different rhythm sections, but it plays nicely, with Davis framed by Feldman or Hancock and playing lyrically throughout. Coleman, for his part, seems remarkably out of place (when he's present, Davis works as a quartet on the ballads), but most noticable is the presence of Williams on the cuts from the last session-- his explosiveness coaxes dynamic performances out of Davis.

Coleman stayed wiht the band until the spring of 1964-- three shows, one from Antibes in 1963 (released as "Miles in Europe") and two sets from New York City in 1964 (split up as "My Funny Valentine" and "Four and MOre") document his time with Davis. The quintet performs excitedly, with the rhythm section encouraging Davis and Coleman, the latter challenging the leader to better performances, but it seems quite honestly that everyone seems to run out of steam now and again on these sessions, particularly the '63 show. Nonetheless, there's many just superb performances throughout the sets, in particular from 1964.

But in the spring Coleman left and Davis needed a replacement for a summer tour of Japan in 1964, picking up Sam Rivers for what would be recorded as "Miles in Tokyo". Rivers was a square peg in a round hole with the Davis band-- his playing is agressive and powerful, but eschews conventional rhythm and sound and sometimes even looses the rhythm section. As exciting as the performance is to hear because of its historical oddity, it just doesn't work.

The final disc in the set finds Davis with the band that would be integral to the next several years of his career-- tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter finally filled the reed seat in his band for a European fall tour. The resulting show (released separtely as "Miles in Berlin") finds Davis and company feeling each other out-- the performances are quite good but stuck pretty close to the mainstream.

Like all the Columbia boxed sets, this one comes with rather extensive liner notes and superb sound, it's really a nice package (and looks great next to the rest of the series). Davis' career would have higher points, but there's enough interesting material in here to make this worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Not Quite The First Round-Up Of Andy's Columbia Hits.......2005-05-14

Although this is a superb set, it is not quite as advertised: the first time all of Andy's Columbia chart singles have been rounded up in one collection. Over the years, Williams placed 45 entries of Billboard's Hot 100 charts on either the Cadence or Columbia labels. The first and ONLY time all 45 original recordings appeared in one collection was in 1995 -- in the 60-track, 3 CD box set "Andy Williams: His Greatest Hits & Finest Performances" (Reader's Digest 102C). I should know -- as I compiled and produced it! Unfortunately the Digest box set is currently out of print. At least now, though, we have the present 50-track collection -- although it does omit Andy's pre-Columbia gems (among them, "Butterfly," his only chart-topping single).

5 out of 5 stars Definitive American hits collection from 1962 onwards .......2005-01-13

Andy began his recording career with the small Cadence label, better known for the early recordings of the Everly Brothers. He had some success on that label with songs such as Canadian sunset, Butterfly (his only UK number one hit) and Lonely Street. However, those songs and the others he recorded for Cadence are not here - you must look elsewhere for them. He left Cadence for Columbia in 1962 and that is where this compilation begins.

This outstanding compilation contains all of Andy's American hits for Columbia, presented in chronological order. At the end of the second CD there are some bonus tracks. Andy's theme song (Moon River) is among these - his version of this song was never released as a single although it is now regarded as his song.

The set includes all the popular classics that Andy is remembered in America for such as Dear heart, Days of wine and roses, Danny boy, Music to watch girls by, Happy heart and many others. What makes this collection particularly interesting is the inclusion of Andy's lesser hits, most of which are rarely heard these days, such as Charade, Wrong for each other, How can I tell her its over and One day of your life.

Can't take my eyes off you (a UK number five hit) and It's so easy (a UK top twenty hit) are also among the bonus tracks. Brits and expatriate Brits will appreciate the inclusion of these two important tracks, which mean that all Andy's UK hits from 1962 (Stranger on the shore) to 1973 (Solitaire) except May each day (which just made the UK top twenty) are included. Andy's last three UK hits (Getting over you, You lay so easy on my mind, The other side of me) are omitted but none of them made the UK top thirty and they, like May each day, can be found elsewhere. Can't get used to losing you, Almost there (both number two), Can't help falling in love (number three), Where do I begin, Solitaire (both number four) and Home loving ma (number seven) were, together with Can't take my eyes off you, Andy's biggest UK hits.

So this is a fascinating collection of Andy's best music, superbly re-mastered and with an informative booklet. Whether you are a committed fan or not, this is the best American compilation ever released of Andy's music. Indeed, it might be the best compilation of his music ever released anywhere in the world. So buy this, then (if you are interested) buy a collection of his Cadence hits.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, an Andy Williams collection to get excited about.......2004-02-04

Lest we forget, Andy Williams was a major force in American popular music for nearly two decades. From 1956 through 1974, he placed over 40 singles on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart. Eight of these tunes made their way into the Top Ten. During those same years, Williams was a dominent force on the Album charts as well. He placed nearly 30 albums on the Top 100 and many of these albums remained on the charts for a year or more. I could never quite understand why his label for most of that time, Columbia Records, failed to issue a collection worthy of his stature and accomplishment in the business. Oh, there were two "Greatest Hits" albums issued, but both were done with very little care. Happy to say that Taragon Records has corrected this injustice. Here is a collection for Andy Williams fans to die for. In addition to a terrific remastering job, this two disc set features a 12 page booklet with some wonderful photographs. The package includes every chart hit Williams had during his nearly two decades at Columbia. I enjoyed them all. Aside from the well known hits such as "Can't Get Used To Losing You", "Dear Heart" and "(Where Do I Begin) Love Story" I would recommend to you "One Day of Your Life", "A Song For You" as well as a rather obscure 1965 hit "Ain't It True". I love that song and had not been able to find it anywhere for nearly 40 years. All in all, this 50 song collection is a bit pricey but given the poor quality alternatives out there I recommend that you pay the price for this one.

5 out of 5 stars Hands Down, The Greatest Vocalist Of All Time!.......2003-07-21

As an Andy Williams collector, I will say this is the Greatest CD available period. Listen to A Song For You, a personal favorite. Start with this CD and than move on to the Collectables Label, 40 album releases put on 20 CD's. Have Fun!

5 out of 5 stars A Warm and Welcome Addition to Anyone's Collection!.......2003-06-14

I, like many others, have been wanting the perfect Andy Williams collection for a long time. I had "16 MOST REQUESTED SONGS" and "16 MOST REQUESTED SONGS: ENCORE!". Now I'm not saying that the songs on these CDs were bad, but some of them were hardly Andy's greatest hits. I thought I'd never get a great Andy Williams anthology.

But wait! Taragon comes to the rescue! This is the greatest Andy Williams collection that anyone could own. It consists of all of his Columbia chart singles from the early '60s material ("Danny Boy", "Dear Heart", "Days of Wine and Roses", etc.) to his mid '60s peak ("Music to Watch Girls By", "Happy Heart", "Bye Bye Blues") all the way up to his great '70s "Adult Contemporary" songs ("A Song for You", "MacArthur Park", "Love Story", etc.)

But enough about all of Andy's various triumphs with some great songs, this collection is worth buying and will hold one's interest quite well. I think that the Love Unlimited Orchestra's version of "Love's Theme" cannot hold a candle to Williams' version.

I really can't put into words how great the sound, track listing, and liner notes are, but I'll say this: buy it and be prepared for an ultimate musical experience!

5 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, but great for its target audience.......2006-09-26

Who should buy this set? Well first of all anyone interested in Miles Davis or John Coltrane and especially their interplay together will probably be interested, but this set seems to have been made for the completist or armchair jazz scholar. This is more of a personal library piece, to be treated as such rather than an introduction or overview of these two jazz "giants". This set covers Miles Davis' work with John Coltrane during Miles' time with Columbia Records. The albums that this would entail are:
'Round About Midnight
Milestones
Miles At Newport
Kind Of Blue
Someday My Prince Will Come
As well as many alternate takes and live recordings not found on these albums.
So you may have heard that Kind Of Blue is a great starting point for jazz. This colletion comprises that entire album and some alternate takes, but the disc that has that album has another song at the beginning and some Miles Davis comments as well as presenting the tracks out of order from the original album order. There is nothing like putting in Kind Of Blue for the first time, hearing the low bass strumming and the explosion of Miles' first notes of "So What". Here you would have to skip to track 4 and then back around for that experience. Or what if (like me) Someday My Prince Will Come is one of your favorite albums by early Columbia Miles Davis. Sadly Coltrane did not play with Miles on every track so the album is not included here in its entirety for obvious reasons. Many times alternate takes are placed one after the other for comparison sake. Rather than listening to these discs like albums with an overall feel, these discs should really be approached as study guides and keys to the interworking of Miles and Trane.
If you are new to jazz or at least to Miles and Coltrane then buy Kind Of Blue and explore it over and over, buy Someday My Prince Will Come and listen to "Pfrancing" and see if it does not speak to you.
If you have the aforementioned albums and you do not really care about alternate takes or the liner notes, then this set was not made for you.
If you have had the aforementioned albums for some time and you love Miles and Trane, buy this set and dig deeper. Listen to the alternate takes placed next to the takes you remember from the albums. Study Miles and Trane together, the call and response, the give and take. Read the wonderful booklet enclosed with the set and learn more about Miles and trane and the other musicians in this classic quintet.
