Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Djalma de Andrade, more commonly known as Bola Sete, finally saw the release of his most fluid acoustic guitar work with the revelatory Ocean Memories. Brazilian and American folk, classical music, flamenco, bossa nova, jazz--they're all wrapped up in his entrancing, strange, thoroughly beautiful music. Fans of John Fahey, Leo Kottke, and Robbie Basho will jump for joy when they hear this amazing collection. --Mike McGonigal

This gorgeous, haunting, and propulsive two-CD collection of solo guitar pieces was recorded in the 1970s by Djalma de Andrade, a black Brazilian who first came to the United States in 1959 after decades steeped in Rio's jazz and folk music scenes. After being "discovered" by Dizzy Gillespie, de Andrade--whose stage name was Bola Sete, or "seven ball," the black ball in Brazilian pool--played in a number of popular jazz combos before turning to solo guitar in 1970. Touring around California, de Andrade perfected a formidably unique blend of classical Spanish guitar, jazz, American folk, bossa nova, and other Brazilian flavors. It's no surprise that John Fahey released half this strange and beautiful music on his Takoma label (this edition adds eight unreleased tracks). Some of these pieces glitter like moonlight on the sea, others surge like groaning storms, but throughout it all, de Andrade manages to conjure darkness without despair, and sweetness without cloying sentiment. --Erik Davis
Ocean Memories,Bola Sete,Samba Moon,Brazilian,Instrumental,Jazz,Pop,Solo guitar music which is a synthesis of many influences, including Brazilian folk music, bossa nova, Spanish music, classical guitar, jazz, and American folk. Absolutely glorious music.

Buzz-o-rama.......2007-04-12
Buzzing strings galore, missed notes aplenty - this sort of distracts the listener from the enjoyment of the music. Also the murky guitar tone does not help any... sure the music is good, but the lack of backing makes it kind of dull also. This is neither jazz, nor Brazilian, nor classical, but a kind of fusion. Frankly, if you like this sort of thing, there are much better artists in the genre... like Jobim or Armeida. For fans only.
Incredible music.......2003-10-18
This is a beautifull recording of a great guitarist.
Numinous and Vivid Masterpiece.......2003-01-16
I gave Bola Sete's Tour of Force 5 stars. This CD is worlds above it. The range Sete crosses on the 19 tracks is astounding. It is a work of beauty encompassing a myriad of influences including folk, bossa nova, jazz, flamenco, and classical guitar blending together into his own inimitable style. It is very much mood music but the moods it creates are vast and complex; more like murals than paintings. There are no happy songs are sad songs but rather interwoven emotions. Sete's virtuosity is mesmerizing, exhilerating. It is not challenging to listen to. It is impressionistic as if Debussey had been born a Latin guitarist. Listening to him play is a religious experience.
Pretty stuff, but with a bite..........2001-10-23
This groovy independent re-release of Bola Sete's 1975 album, "Ocean" includes a complete CD's worth of extra, previously unissued material. Solo acoustic guitar seldom sounded so great, as he revisits and refashions classic Brazilian themes and energetically plunges through several flamenco-based tunes. Originally recorded for the Takoma label, these tunes bear the distictive stamp of John Fahey's production style: the muscular Spanish classical style is quietly subverted by gentle cascades of echo and velvet-toned reverb, while in the softer passages, layer upon layer of melody and rhythm are allowed to build up and well over. At times, the contrast between the ethereal bossa nova tunes and the more aggressive flamenco tracks may be a little disconcerting; it's not as relaxing as you might have thought going into it. But it is dazzling and hyponotic -- once you get into the flow of this album, it rewards you handsomely. The "new" material on Disc Two is particularly nice. Recommended!
A great tribue to a great artist.......2000-08-10
Bola Sete (real name Djalma de Andrade) was one of the pioneers of "World Music". In his earlier albums, he played with groups in much more of a jazz-bossa nova vein. This album is a solo guitar instrumental masterpiece that is much more exploratory, meditative, and intense than anything he did previously with Vince Guaraldi. Imagine an artist with the imagination of John Fahey, the intensity of John Coltrane, the lyricism of Milton Nascimento and the sheer virtuosity of Paco de Lucia and you are getting close.
Bola Sete was an inspiration to artists as diverse as Fahey, Carlos Santana, and George Winston. His music encompasses such diverse forms as Jazz, Brazilian folk music, Classical, and Flamenco, but it all ends up sounding as individual and singular as Bola Sete really was. Part of this two CD set was available on vinyl at one point thru Windham Hill. I am very glad that this album is now available with all the wonderful music from this session.
I would like to thank Anne Sete for being instrumental in getting this music out. This is a great gift to us all and a wonderful tribute to one of the great musicians.

Composer James Horner's ubiquitous score for Titanic remains a bittersweet, romantic modern soundtrack staple, one that became both a public sensation (the first orchestral score to soar to the top of the Billboard charts) and Hollywood legend (winning the Oscar as 1997's Best Dramatic Score). Its infusion of Irish folk motifs within a sweeping context that evokes the majestic danger of the sea is charming, its seamless interpolation of synths and orchestra still an inspirational landmark for other contemporary composers. This new Hybrid SACD Stereo/Surround Sound edition enhances Horner's unabashed melodramatics with a crystalline new mix that maintains the original's nuances, even as it underscores the composer's melodramatic orchestral thunder. The rear channels of the new mix underplay the limits of the format's surround potential, but add a spacious, hall ambience that actually enhances the spectacular new clarity of the front channels' primary music mix. Celine Dion's star turn on the film's hit single, "My Heart Will Go On," is mixed similarly, with her dead-center vocals surrounded by the orchestra, effectively creating the illusion of a stage performance. --Jerry McCulley

Truly great guitar playing.......2001-06-15
This 2-disk set of solo acoustic guitar is beutiful and moving throughout. Bola Sete is technically an astonishingly brilliant player, but his playing is at the service of personal expression. There is a remarkable range of feeling here. The set is rather [costly]for 81 minutes, but worth every cent. This is an album to live with for years.
Uniquely Beauty-Full !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2000-02-28
Bola Sete was one of the greatest Brazilian guitarists ever as well as one of the finest solo guitar acts that you could ever hear live! this CD is easily his best studio recording with a reverb drenched, spacial atmosphere of amazing solo acoustic guitar classics. it is the exploring & innovative improvising attitude on these recordings that make this CD sooooo uniquely special to my ears. Bola proves on this CD that he was one of the "best-ever" solo acoustic, nylon string guitarists... as much an outstanding innovator as he was impressive interpreter of the Spanish /Brazilian guitar /violao- do yourself a favor & check this CD out !!!

Sinking-ship soundtracks from diverse media coalesce in this well-produced olio of pleasant renditions conducted by Randy Miller and orchestrated by Donald Johnston. The selections include music to the now historical James Cameron film, including "My Heart Will Go On" in both a solo piano and as a grand easy-listening instrumental. Similar respectful treatments are also provided in the fanfare from Jean Negulesco's 1953 film composed by Sol Kaplan, some of William Alwyn's score to Roy Baker's 1958 British film A Night To Remember, Maury Yeston's compositions for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, and Lennie Niehaus's score for the 1996 television miniseries. Included also is the sentimental favorite "Nearer My God to Thee," which historians have determined was not played when the real ship went down. --Jason Verlinde

What an inspiring musical masterpiece!.......1999-11-22
This compilation finally gives us access to a piano version of "my heart will go on", which is to say the least the most beautiful way to listen to the melody. Everytime you play track 2, you feel an epiphany running through your body. Let us thank James Horner's genius for the melody, and those at Varese Sarabande for putting together such a wonderful CD. Hello from Caracas.
I HAVE THE CD AND I LISTEN TO IT OFTEN. I REALLY LOVE IT........1999-05-09
I LOVED THE, CD VERY, VERY MUCH . THE FIRST NIGHT THAT I GOT THE CD I LISTENED TO THE THEME SONG. THEN I REMEMBERED IT. THE CD WAS THE TALK OF THE SCHOOL FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF.
Excellent Supplementary Soundtrack to JH's Original.......1998-07-13
Varese Sarabande has put together an excellent compilation and should help hold over Titanic music fans until James Horner's 2nd Titanic Album arrives in September. The album has a number of instrumental tracks to the James Cameron movie as well as music from the Broadway show, the TV Miniseries from '96 (starring Catherine Zeta Jones), the 1958 British Film "A Night to Remember", and the 1953 Hollywood Film (starring Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck). Even if one has only seen the recent movie, the soundtrack is worthwhile to add to your collection especially if one likes movie instrumental music and Titanic in particular. There are excellent full orchestra versions of the rousing "Southhampton" and "My Heart Will Go On." There is also an excellent piano version of "Rose's Theme" and an excellent old fashioned dance waltz of "Rose"..."A Life So Changed" is my favorite - the inspiring message of living and thriving after the death of a loved one is very poignant...Other tracks are excellent: "Nearer My God to Thee" is sad and elegiac while Lennie Niehaus's "Titanic" is atmospheric and moody...Overall, a very good instrumental album; worth buying!

IT'S SINKING!.......2001-10-22
This is a great CD if you are really into buying soundtracks of movies that create a false sense of meaning in your life or if you live through movies insted of the real world. And Celine Dion?? I could barely listen to the song the first time I heard it. Now it's really annoying, just like any other song they over-overplay on the radio, on television, and at weddings. Help! I'm stuck in the mainstream nothingness! repeat repeat repeat
VERY GOOD!.......2001-03-03
A perfect soundtrack (only I have the video of Titanic, not the soundtrack). The soundtrack REALLY sets the mood. Very touching and emotional, and uplifting, with Celine singing the final song. I like it very much, though Enya would also be perfect to put in the soundtrack also, considering her soulful "Watermark" and "A Day Without Rain."
James Horner's Best Masterpiece!.......2000-11-19
Happy to say that I'm a proud owner of this soundtrack on CD.But because of James Horner's sweeping masterpiece,I decided to get it on the SACD format. His music involves you in the story of the fateful R.M.S. Titanic and furthermore brings joy, happiness and sadness in this beautifully crafted CD edition.Calling all Titanic fans out there, this is one CD not to be missed! Two thumbs up!
