5 out of 5 stars New Paul Taylor Fan.......2007-04-05

This is my first Paul Taylor CD but will definitely not be the last. Nightlife is lively, foot stompin' but also smooth and mellow. Smooth Jazz lovers will enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2007-01-30

When I first heard the title track, it produced a free feeling-roll down the car window, throw open the sun roof kinda groove. I couldn't wait to buy it! (Missed him last year at the jazz fest!)

The whole CD is worth buying. Easy grooving, listening, nice bass and drum lines.

5 out of 5 stars Great .......2007-01-04

I really love this CD Paul Taylor really did an outstanding job on making this one. everything on it sounds good. I own a store in NJ and I play the CD the custermers comes in and ask who is that it sound so good. Thanks Mr Taylor for bringing beautiful music to our ears.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff!.......2006-11-04

Was looking for another CD when I stumbled across this one. What a pleasant surprise! Am enjoying this CD in my car every day.

4 out of 5 stars PT Cruising.......2005-12-09

I had a chance to see this gentlemen in concert this year and He is great! On this cd you have the Reggae Dance tune, Anything You Say. I love this song!!! The sexy, Silk & Lace, the mellow tunes, Candlelight and Night Life, the funky, Around The Corner, and the smooth jazz tunes, Enjoy The Ride, Things Left Unsaid and After Hours are great. I did not particular care for the remake of Full Forces', Tender Love done by my all-time favorite Reggae Recording Artist, Maxi Priest. I just thought this song did not fit on this cd. I really did not care for it when it was an R&B single at the time.

The cd is okay but his best work has been on previous cd's like Hypnotic, On The Horn, Undercover and lets not forget his Greatest Hits cd. All of these are cds that one should have in their collection.

In my opinion, I thought that the cd was good but not better than the previous ones even thou there are some songs on it that I really liked. I think that I just have to give it time and it will grow on me. I would still add it to my collection just because it's Paul Taylor and because I am a huge fan of his.

One Luv

5 out of 5 stars Samples don't do justice to this CD.......1999-10-13

As an avid listener to this CD it struck me how little of this brilliant effort makes it into the samples. Golub consistently takes the listener on a journey with more twists and turns than any Raiders of the Lost Ark movie. It is his genius in combining his ideas, bending the direction and changing the flow of the music that makes his work so worthwhile. Combine that with a fluid and soulful guitar style that matches any sax and you have an experience that gets better and better with each play. A small sample just does not do justice to this music.

5 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic CD!.......1999-08-10

Great, soulfull music. Lots of tunes that you just love the first time that you hear them!

You'll love this one! Not only does Jeff astound us with his music, he IS the music. I've had the pleasure of witnessing Jeff in action, live. This was my first encounter with "Avenue Blue" and in my opinion, they stole the show.

I've always been a fan of Andy C and when I heard about Nightlife 2, I knew I had to get it. THIS HAS TO BE THE BEST DRUM & BASS CD THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!!! I thought the first Nightlife cd was really good, and it is, but Nightlife 2 is UNBELIEVABLE! YOU MUST GET THIS CD NOW!!

5 out of 5 stars Massv of all Massv.......2005-08-04

Is this guy a better DJ or producer? From his Ram Trilogy and Origin Unknown stuff, he's composed some of the best D&B trax ever. But his DJ skills are equally impressive, probably one of the best in this genre (not ez muzik to mix--trust me). CD 1 has some absolute bombs on it, and they are mixed to perfection. If I were to nit pick, I wish he let a few of these stormers go a lil' longer ("Together" by Logistics is an all time roller) but in his defense, he's rinsing 29 trax, so I can understand. Disc 2 is some of his best work as a producer w/ Ram and O.U. ("Dred Bass", which he has a remix of on this disc) is one of the 1st trax that turned me on to Jungle--it's an all time classic. Anyway, both of these discs are my 4 shots of espresso on my to work every morning.

5 out of 5 stars SICK DRUM & BASS.......2005-06-02

If you like drum and bass this is the album for you. Even if you dont like drum and bass and your in to other styles like hardcore or Freeform you will LOVE this CD. Number 26 is one of the best songs I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Andy C. at his best.......2005-03-27

I have been a fan of Andy C. for quite some time, getting my hands on every album he's put out. I believe him to be one of the best mixers of drum & bass around. When I heard about this album, I rushed straight to the store to buy it. The first Nightlife album was great, but is no comparison to this one. It starts off with a bang and ends with a bang. Both CDs are jam packed with some of the grittiest drum & bass tunes your ears will ever hear. Some of the intros on these CDs blew me away! I rewind through intros almost every time I listen to these CDs. The bass will make your speakers explode, and I talk from experience. I played a few of the songs from this collection on a friend's stereo and he ended up needing new speakers. When that happens, you know it's good!
You need this album, buy it, don't miss out.

5 out of 5 stars Good ish, good ish...........2005-01-30

Well, I've been a D'n'B listener since about 1999, and when I first started to listen to it i was mostly in to the works of Dieselboy, AK1200, and DJ Dara......I was at the record store the other day and This album caught my eye, because of the track listings and it was priced reasonably well for the amount of songs. I have never heard anything from AndyC before my purchase, and I have to say WOW, this CD is really really good. I mean being accustomed to hearing darker D'n'B (diesely, ak1200), it was a fresh sound out of the ordinary. This D'n'B has some vocals here and there and it has more a of a dance type feel. Also, because of this CD, I purchased NIGHTLIFE (the first one) and also RAM RAIDERS mixed by AndyC. You will not be disappointed with this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Eric Alexander almost reached greatness on NLIT..........2007-02-20

This is a brilliant CD that belongs on the shelves of any sax-loving jazz afficiondao, but it's also frustrating how close Alexander came to greatness on this particular album but fell short. In fact the first 4 tracks have a compunctory by-the-numbers feel that really prevents them being anything more than sterile showcases for Alexander's technical virtuosity on tenor saxophone. On the second half (tracks 5-8) the band starts to cook, with Alexander and the rest of the quartet improvising more freely, playing more as a unit than as a four guys taking turns soloing. This is when the magic really happens and why the CD is brilliant. Unfortunately I still couldn't escape the feeling that Alexander is playing more from his head than his heart. If he'd trusted the music more ("use the Force, Luke!") and gone with the flow on these jams I think thuis would have been a jazz album for the ages.

5 out of 5 stars The search is over . We have another great Tenor sax player........2006-11-11

This album clearly demonstrates Eric Alexander's virtuosity. He belongs amongst the tenor sax giants; John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson and Sonny Rollins. In my view he is the best 'new' Sax giant around.

This album is a pleasure to listen to from start to finish. Apart from Alexander's phenomenal tone and dexterity, he is a polished musician who has created a superb album with 'Nightlife in Tokyo'.

He is accompanied by Harold Mabern on piano, who clearly revelled in the making of this cd. His playing is extraordinarily satisfying and enjoyable.

Do I need to say anything about Ron Carter on Bass? It is self-explanatory.

Joe Farnsworth is on drums and creates a great groove.

Like 'Longboard Jazzer" this album carries my highest recommendation. I feel unable to add much to his excellent review below which I endorse.

5 out of 5 stars I think he's reached critical mass.......2004-01-25

Some guys work at it forever, learn the idiom, become quite competent, and that's about it. They never really find their own distinctive voice. Other guys just seem to have it right from the beginning. Somehow, they intuit the entire history of jazz early on, emerge on the scene as full-blown monster musicians, and everyone's shaking their heads as these cats transform the music as twenty-somethings.

Then there's guys like Eric Alexander. I'd pegged him for a journeyman--a guy with significant chops who knew the hard-bop/post-bop language inside out, but didn't really have much original to say conceptually, tonally, or compositionally. A better-sounding and higher-echelon journeyman, but still a journeyman.

Until this date.

Granted, I haven't heard every single disc he's put out over the years, but I've heard my share. And I must say that, at least to these ears, he's experienced a quantum leap forward, vaulting himself out of the vast swamp of saxophonic proficiency into the highest plateaux of wind instrument brilliance. There's simply so much more substance, res, power, ease of execution, maturity of conception, tonal and timbral depth, sheer authority, and brash confidence here than ever before that he hardly seems the same player.

It's like he's suddenly become an Old Soul.

A Sax Master.

An Overnight Sensation (albeit a decade-plus--and scores of discs as leader and sideman--in the making).

Let's start with his tone. OK, he's not Pharoah Sanders yet, but he's darn close. He's finally come into that huge fullness of tone that characterizes the best tenor sax players. And he's worked hard to nail the tone center throughout his instrument's register. Indeed, he sounds just as authoritative up high as in the middle or lower registers.

Then there's his compositions. There's a fairly major Milesish/Tyneresque modal/Latin thing happening here ("Nemesis," "Cold Smoke," in 5/4, I believe)--and Harold Mabern has McCoy's moves stone down, but in his own unique voice. But there's a lot more going on as well--an Afro-Cuban groove on "Island," with it's entirely authentic Caribbean Calypso vibe; heavy blues ("Big R.C."); and very nifty post-bop ("Lock Up and Bow Out"). The thing about these compositions is how natural they sound. There's none of that "Hey, watch me, I can do Wayne Shorter!" vibe. Or, "Look how many idioms I've mastered!" thing happening. Instead, there's such complete familiarity with all major jazz languages that his compositions come out sounding absolutely effortless, almost instinctual, like instant classics. That's what endless hours on the bandstand as well as major woodshedding will get you, if you've got the right stuff.

You can always tell a major session. Everyone seems to play just a little bit better; there's an uncanny electricity combined with warmth and intimacy. The leader's in a zone, and the rest of the guys sense it and find a way to lock into the extraordinary thing that's going down. That's what I sense here. And it can only happen when a player has reached a certain level of maturity. This may be the most important aspect of this disc--Anderson's emergence as a brilliant leader. One sure sign of this is that everyone plays at the top of their capability--and beyond. Now understand, this is a very accomplished band: the great but underappreciated Harold Mabern (piano); Ron Carter, perhaps THE premier bassist of his generation, sounding as good as I've ever heard him; and the simply stunning Joel Farnsworth giving the young lion drummers (of whom there is certainly no shortage) a lesson in swing, coloration, and polyrhythmic dexterity.

Conceptually, there's nothing radical going on here--just highest-order playing from young and old jazz masters. No hip-hop, trip-hop, trance, dance, house, alt-rock, or any other alien influences. Nothing to hide behind. Nothing to give the music some exotic sheen that will fool the unwary listener into thinking more's happening here than really is. Just the classic, naked jazz quartet. It takes consummate musicianship, chutzpah, and conversational interaction of the highest order to separate a disc like this from the hundreds, perhaps thousands, of similar sessions released during any given year. That's one reason, I'm sure, so many guys are (quite successfully, in many cases) resorting to expanded musical palettes and soundscapes. But it's harder--and therefore in a weird way probably more significant--to make great-sounding music in this pared-down environment.

That's why I'm giving this disc my absolute highest recommendation. Do check it out.

4 out of 5 stars It's A Keeper.......2003-09-23

An excellent setting for tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander. A wonderful group which includes legend Harold Maybern on piano. Eric studied with George Coleman in New York and it shows, reworking of standard "I Can Dream Can't I?" allows Alexander's melodic sense to really blossom. A world class band playing jazz as it was meant to be....swung.

Album Description

Nightlife 3 seems more eagerly anticipated than either of the two previous selections. Andy C's popularity is higher than ever, and he's considered to be at the top of his game, once again being the only drum & bass DJ to feature in DJ magazine's annual poll of the world's Top 100 DJ's. The CD focuses on what's happening in drum'n'bass in the here and now, another exceptional journey through the styles that represents an Andy C club set, taking in many exclusives along the way among which are many future anthems. RAM. 2006.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Like mainstream DnB? This is yours.......2006-06-26

Born out of a rich tapestry of electronica, reggae, and jazz/funk genres, drum and bass has come a long way since before it even had a name in the early nineties to the sports channel intro, car commercial power it is today. This is thanks in part to people like Andy C. Being as Andy has only ever released a handful of solo twelve inches (most of them in the previous decade), his contribution to the wide but thinly spread junglist movement has mostly been as a DJ and label owner. To this day, he's continually voted the best DnB deej by Knowledge mag and the likes. When you get that big, you no longer have to buy records. People will flood you with complimentary white labels and even pay you to spin their tracks. So, while Andy's umpteen years of mixing experience is never in question, his track selection represents a survey of the newest mainstream DnB circa 2006 -funky, techy, and a little hard/dark/fast- but it's a survey built on the spirit of promotion and perk that Andy probably can't take real credit for. I seriously doubt he has set foot near a dusty record shop in years. However, he is given some fine records from the likes of Chase & Status and the legendary Concord Dawn, both of which truly deserve the success inclusion in the Nightlife series provides, so some good should come from number 3. If you like mainstream DnB, this is your bananas.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

The Pet Shop Boys' Nightlife saved 1999 from being a rather dormant year in techno-pop. Gliding through 12 tracks with a let-us-show-you-how-it's-done panache, these seasoned veterans transition from ballad to body-rocker with nary a hair out of place. Few can use a canned snare fill to full effect like the Pet Shop Boys do on this album, indicative of their impeccable choices in songcraft and matched only by their often deceptively flippant lyrical content. --Beth Massa

Amazon.com

The reason dance-pop sustains greater longevity than wordless dance music is because dance-pop is about something. Albums released by the great ones--New Order, Depeche Mode, Erasure, and, of course, the Pet Shop Boys--maintain their appeal throughout the years because the lyrical content is intelligent, clearly narrative, and forever relevant. With Nightlife, the Pet Shop Boys continue to write startlingly honest and lyrically pointed songs, despite 13 years of cultivating an image of vacant boredom and smug indifference. Likewise, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe need not follow trends to keep current. Nightlife is uniquely a Pet Shop Boys album and arguably the zenith of their career. Midtempo techno tracks build out from a disco sensibility. Body-rocking rhythms are softened with sorrowful swells of strings, synthesized vocal choruses, and Tennant's sandy, monotone recite-singing. Conversely, the Boys augment the album's ballads with fat blips of bass line and elusive back beats. Lyrics are as innuendo laden as ever, although this time out (ahem) the veil is thinner than ever. Think the Pet Shop Boys' records will ever get stale? Oh, please. --Beth Massa

3 out of 5 stars Fun For Half of the Night.......2006-04-23

I dont know how to phrase this, but Nightlife is like 2 different cds wrapped in one. How can songs as magical and awesome as "Vampires", as rollicking dancefloor fun as "New York City Boy" or as poignant and sharp as "In Denial", share a CD with such uninspired fare as "The Only One", "Footsteps" or "Happiness Is An Option"? As for the singles "You Only Tell Me..." and "I Dont Know What You Want..." they are fantastic and deserve their rightful place in the PSB canon.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2005-01-07

This has to be one of my favorite PSB albums. The songs are awesome and original.

1. For Your Own Good - (5) Very cool song!

2. Closer To Heaven - (3) Good song but not one of my favs.

3. I Don't Know What You Want But I Can't Give It Any More - (5) Another of my favs. Good dance tune.

4. Happiness Is An Option -(3) Not so hot

5. You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk - (5) Awesome! Great song to listen to after being at a nightclub.

6. Vampires - (4) Pretty good but kinda slow

7. Radiophonic - (5)The best song on the album (in my opinion)

8. The Only One - (5)Slow, sweet and awesome!

9. Boy Strange - (4) Pretty cool song took some time for me to like it.

10. In Denial - (5) Awesome!

11. New York City Boy - (4) Pretty good dance song sorta reminds me of the Village People

12. Footsteps - (5) I loveeeee this song! It's slow but the melody is sweet and it grew on me very quickly.

Overall buy this album! It's a must have for any PSB fan

4 out of 5 stars The boys still got it!.......2003-12-12

The Pet Shop Boys have been my guilty pleasure since 1986, when I was still in middle school. There is just something about them that screams talent. Their lyrics speak to me, their melodies touch the heart. Their songs prove that pop music doesn't have to consist of only three chords and silly, redundant, repetitive lyrics. They have always had their very own, unique sound, and even though it may not be for for everyone, their striking originality and brilliant songwriting cannot be denied. Play me an N'Sync song and I wouldn't know which one of the multitude of boy bands it belonged to. Play me a Pet Shop Boys song, and I will know from the very first chords who the songwriter and the performer is.

Pet Shop Boys prove that dance/electronic music can actually be moving and intelligent. "Nightlife" only further proves that. After the disappointment of just abour every album that came out after "Very" I was not particularly thrilled about "Nightlife" coming out, fearing another disappointment and feeling that perhaps indeed, nothing lasts forever and the Boys' have lost their touch. I'm SO very glad to admit I was wrong.

"Nightlife" is the come-back-with-a-vengenace type album. There are few tracks that did nothing for me (for example, "New York City Boy" while being a fluffy and pleasant dance song is also a quite average dance song). But for the most part the album is a delight and there are some real gems rivaling the brilliance of Behavior and Very (my two other favorites).

It's a bit strange to me that so many people consider this their "coming out" album. To me, they've always been out, what with the frank confession of "It's A Sin" and all the subtext in so many other songs. Even though I preferred it when they were subtle about it, the sincerety of the songs soften the blatancy of the lyrics. "In Denial" actually made me choke up.

The album is a winner, no doubt about that. Even though the Boys are nearing 50 they show no sign of slowing down. I can't wait for their next album.

4 out of 5 stars Add Life to Your Nights.......2003-12-11

Even though I prefer _Introspective_ over this album, _Nightlife_ is a recommended purchase if you have even a mild interest in synthpop. The standout is "For Your Own Good"--made for dancing. Following closely are "Radiophonic" and "In Denial." Other good ones are "Closer to Heaven," "You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk," "The Only One," and the disco "New York City Boy." While not every song on this disc is something you can dance to, Tennant's lyrics and the quality of the music even on the ballads makes this album worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars For your own good..........2003-10-02

...buy this album. The Pet Shop Boys have roared back with a vengeance, after a so-so showing with their last album, _Bilingual_, which took the running joke of a trip to Spain a bit too far I think. This album, backed up by their first tour to include USA dates in half a decade, is sharp, clean, fun, witty, poppy, dance-filled -- all the things the PSB are known and loved for. I've collected almost every disk they've ever put out -- this one ranks up there with 'Actually' and 'Behaviour' as the trinity of the best. What a shame that MTV won't show their videos, being dominated by rap groups or boy bands. The Pet Shop Boys are most definitely 'out' now, too -- no surprise to those of us who have been avid fans for (gulp!, could it be?!) a decade and a half since their first singles came out under the tutelage of Bobby O., but perhaps a reason why in the USA they have become more of a cult-following band rather than a generally popular one. Even their old number one singles don't seem to get much air time any longer. Oh well, that just makes it all so much nicer for those of us who have discovered their enduring talent.

I guess the rest are just 'In Denial' ??

Get this album, read the lyrics as you listen to them, contemplate their meaning and tap your toes. Good fun all around.

The videos to I don't know what you want but I can't give it anymore and New York City Boy are available on the single releases which accompany this album. These are interesting and innovative, as are many things PSB.

The music is varied but consistent through the album. In Denial, with guest artist Kylie Minogue (not well known to American audiences since the mid-80s, but still popular in Europe and Asia), is an interesting psychological song, with so many layers of meaning (given the proclivities of the PSB) that it ends up being quite dazzling. The simple strands and disappointment in You only tell me you love me when you're drunk are interesting, strangely dance-able while being introspective and darker.

Backed up by a world tour, Nightlife has become a well-received if not major seller throughtout the world. Even as Neil Tennant approaches the age of 50, he shows no signs of slowing, and, unlike much of the pop-py music around today, the lyrics and strains that Tennant and Lowe produce are not age-specific; one might gasp at the idea of a 60-year-old Brittany Spears doing anything, much less belting out Do that to me one more time; but the Pet Shop Boys can sing their songs without fear of physical betrayal for decades to come.

3 out of 5 stars I'll Take the Good With the Bad.......2007-06-01

ODW's early work was great but their full-length album was a little too polished and nice for my liking. I used to have "Target For Life" on a video compilation and it remains a favourite song, even after 25 years.
These guys had a very interesting set-up. They used pre-recorded live drums on tape and played all those super-fast synth sequencers live - no arpeggiators, no sequencers or anything. For that they deserve a huge amount of respect but I grabbed this CD because what they did with their super-fast playing was often just as inspiring.

I'd give the early stuff, pre-album, 4 or even 4 1/2 stars but the album isn't worth more than 2 1/2 so it drags the overall rating down.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY!.......2007-02-06

I have been waiting for this exact collection of the band's EP and LP for years. Aside from the infectious "Lawnchairs", many of the other tunes capture that bouncy, quirky synth dance sound. Reminds me very much of Devo, Pete Shelley, and at times, Missing Persons (with male vocal, of course) in the early 80s. The ONLY problem is, well, there is ONE song left off this collection from the "Moving Windows" LP!!! The song 'Paris' is nowhere to be found! Unfortunately, one of the tracks here had to be cut to make room for all the songs, but personally, I would have left off one of the versions of Lawnchairs, considering both mixes are available on numerous rhino new wave compilations. Now serious collectors are forced to keep their vinyl for that one song. Also note that the outro to "Buildings" has been left out--it was actually an outro to the entire "moving windows" LP--some spoken chatter by the band, sounding like aliens.

It's great to have some tracks that were not on either the EP and LP, which would be the songs Nightlife, Take Me, Hotel Room, She's Out There, Airline, and Raincoats & Silverware. Some of these are quite strong new wave songs--I sort of expected a bunch of rejects.

If you're looking for some new wave synthdance you missed in the 1980s, don't hesitate to grab this CD before it's gone. And thanks to Almacantar records for preserving the works of another great new wave band! Do you take requests???

4 out of 5 stars Great to finally see a body-of-work CD for these underrated synthpop pioneers .......2007-01-30

Though mostly known for their 1980 underground hit "Lawnchairs", the subsequent material from these synthpop pioneers also deserves a listen because it's actually quite good. Their sound is very much a product of its time (1980-1983), but that's hardly a bad thing. It's not only great that all of the tracks from their Digital Cowboy EP and their first and only proper LP, Moving Windows, have finally seen the light of day on CD, it's also icing on the cake to get the original (1980) and "re-recorded" (1981) versions of "Lawnchairs" in the same package.

Album Description

Their third album serves up narratives that examine the realities no one wants to look at: war and poverty. The lyrics are about the government, political disillusionment, and being distracted by nightlife, consumerism, and celebrity watching. After some sound and line up changes, the band has largely abandoned their skronky, dance punk sound, but they're still dynamic, elastic, and danceable. They even sound like a pop band at times. All their changes and efforts are well evidenced on this record's twelve tracks of polished chaos. The group is as powerful and unhinged as ever.

4 out of 5 stars New Wave of No Wave Grrrls Get Their Groove On.......2006-08-02

It's been a few years since Erase Errata's last album, "At Crystal Palace," was released, and in that time the band has changed their personel somewhat (guitarist Sara Jaffe has departed for grad school). Fortunately, their spiky, fiery post-punk hasn't changed, but (can ya believe it) "matured." Now when I say that I don't mean "got soft," but now they've learned how to get their groove on. Whereas on their previous LP's the rhythm section of Bianca Sparta (drums) and Ellie Erickson (bass) stayed true to their intitial inspiration, the "No Wave" scene of the late 70's, here they're adding in danceable ryhthms that other post-punkers dabbled in (Gang Of Four, say). Yeah yeah yeah, you say, so has every other hipster band in New York these days--big freakin' deal. Ah, but the guitars of Jenny Hoyston are simply in a much higher league than say, the Rapture or Radio 4. While she still likes letting loose with a salvo of skronky noise, she can also effortlessly run off a bit of surf rock or even something in the realm of late jazz giant Sonny Sharrock. No, she doesn't approach the guitar nirvana that Sonic Youth has perfected, but she also doesn't try to copy them either. Some songs, like "Giant Hands," go for the kind of energy that Sleater-Kinney had early in their carreer. Many others recall the late, great Dog Faced Hermans (who?--you say--well, search out and buy anything of theirs you can--you won't be disappointed!).

Lyrically, Erase Errata still cling to the disjointed imagery all too common in indie rock, and a few songs offer some undercooked poitical commentary (from "Tax Dollar": "See us injure, see us steal/See us talking on about another kill"). These are minor quibbles in the long run, though, because the power of the music easily compensates. If you want to rock out, but you also want a bit of an experimental edge, then "Nightlife" is this year's best bet. Erase Errata are way more punk then all those MTV-approved brats and whiners, and way smarter as well. This is the kind of thing that'll get me dancing around the house in my underwear--okay, that's a very disturbing image, but it'll be worth it when you hear this.

Anyone looking to comprehend the understated power of the Rat Pack should first read Nick Tosches's brilliant Dean Martin biography Dino: Living High in the Dirty Business of Dreams. By cutting past nightclub clichés to matters both carnal and appreciably dark, Tosches locates the music and the period's special appeal. Looking to take that bygone era a few steps closer to absurdity, try this collection--a mop-up of tracks featured in the movie Swingers, but left off the original soundtrack. Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Mel Torme, and the awkward Ann-Margret are all naturals and deserve to be here. But you have to wonder who invited Paul Anka to this party. Probably the same joker who added Marty & Elaine's cover of the Bee Gees' "Staying Alive" and Heart's completely out-of-place hard rock contribution, "Magic Man." Very strange, indeed. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps a little biased..........2001-01-31

...Because this CD has my all-time favorite dance song on it: Baby (You've Got What It Takes). It took me 2 weeks to find the version I liked after I first heard Dinah and Brook's fabulous standard-setting rendition. Such fun! The rest is good too, with the exception of the swing version of "Stayin' Alive," which I find simply awful. The Heart song that was left off the original makes for a good mix. If it was a record I would have wonr it out in just the first few weeks!

3 out of 5 stars Nice companion to the original, but not necessary.......2000-08-28

To answer at least one of Rob O'Connor's questions from the above Amazon.com review: Stayin' Alive is included because it is featured in the movie. Imagine that, a song on a soundtrack that was in the movie... strange thing indeed. The same goes for the Heart song Majic Man. Beyond that the rest of this "soundtrack" are songs that the creators of the movie used as "inspiration". Royal Crown Revue is included here since RCR was the band the Jon Favreau used to dance to at the Derby before Big Bad Voodoo Daddy took over. Other songs are tunes that they wanted to include but could not afford at the time. All in all it's a nice companion to the original. There is a nice photo booklet included. This album is not meant to be a scrapbook of the "swing scene" and lindy hoppers, but a portrait of the music in and around the retro-lounge lifestyle.

4 out of 5 stars The ultimate soundtrack sequel!.......1999-10-05

Finally there is a soundtrack sequel out there that I liked the first one enough to buy the secound. It isn't quite as good as the first one yet it is very enjoyable. I couldn't help but buy it when I saw it on the sales racks. Check it out if you like the original. The only complaint is that it is too short. Some dialogue from the film would be nice.

2 out of 5 stars Not Bad...good Swingers music...more 2 1/2 stars than 2.......1999-09-30

This 2nd Swingers Soundtrack is not bad. It only has maby 2 or 3 songs that are acutally in the movie, but its not bad. I personally like the first soundtrack better. It has more songs from the movie and is just all around better. This one is good to but I like the first one better and I think you will to.

5 out of 5 stars I Love The Nightlife and So Much More.......2006-11-03

If you enjoy versatility and good vocals, this is for you. Alicia is known for her signature song, I Love The Nightlife. She displays her talent as a singer and writer by showcasing songs that she cowrote with Susan Hutchenson. These are the tunes that everyone missed because they were caught up in the disco era. Check these out and treat yourself to the range of emotion and depth that Alicia inspires with her music.

5 out of 5 stars Diamomd In The Rough.......2004-11-28

Like the title of one of her songs... Alicia Bridges is truely a 'diamond in the rough!'

I still cannot believe that this lady was so underrecognized as an artist. She must be surely something when she is performing live. I of course - love her staple song 'I Love The Night Life,' but also like her No.86 hit 'Body Heat,' as well as other greats such as the country-tinged 'City Rhythm,' the funk-like 'In The Name of Love,' and the original footlose dancer 'Learned To Dance Too Soon.' Bottom line... I like 13 out of 16 songs on this CD; all but 'We Are One,' 'High Altitudes,' and 'So Cozy.'

For those of you who are curious... Alicia started doing DJ/VJ work in the 1980's after her music career stayed at a hault, and lived in San Francisco for a while. Then she moved back to Atlanta, and in the mid-90's started working at a gay club called The Otherside Lounge. I believe she still works there, too. [...]

3 out of 5 stars So Much More Than..........2002-06-25

Although an evergreen simply becuase it is one of the best pop songs of the last thirty years, investing in this collection solely for "I Love The Nightlife" will leave you surprised since few of Alicia Bridges' other recordings reflected the disco aspirations of her signature song. Showcased here are her appealingly unique voice and phrasing as she masticates rather than sings these 16 tracks, which include for the first time on compact disc tracks from her 1979 LP 'Play It As It Lays'. Think Carole Pope with a much softer edge and more dexterity (not to diminish Carole's own brand of tribal vocalizing at all) and you can almost hear a sample of Bridges' making her way through her mostly Southern Rock/R&B material. ("Body Heat", Bridges' follow-up to "...Nightlife", is a clever bridge bewteen her dance and rock territories.) In fact, had Bridges a more illustrious career Alanis Morissette could have been accused of studying her style a little to precisely ("High Altitude" being a perfect example). While included on this disc is Bridges' debut album in its entirety, excluding a mere three of the nine tracks that made up 'Play It As It Lays'--leaving the playing time at 66 minutes--seems unnecessary. Why not both complete LPs? But anyway, still a great disc to (re)discover a talent who should have had more than was given her. Unfortunately, she was a victim left in the wake of Disco's excess--and undeservedly so since her talent prevented her from becoming a producer's puppet. I have seen Bridges perform live in the past few years and she still sounds as robust as she does on many of these 20+ year-old recordings, and of note is that she co-wrote them all. She also sounds capable of making some new music. If it's voices you like, check hers out. It's really not the voice you've been hearing all these years.
