Hawaii and Nashville albums on one CD........2002-09-04
The first album explores Hawaiian music, opening with Blue Hawaii, which Elvis made famous. Much to my disappointment, Mary does not sing on this album - it is all instrumental. The liner notes suggest that Mary's contribution may have been the steady rhythm guitar, but it's clear that even the good people at Collectables aren't sure if this is so. Judged as an instrumental release, however, it is a lovely album which captures the flavor of Hawaii even though Les and Mary didn't record it there and most of the melodies are not indigenous.
The second half of this twofer was actually recorded in Nashville and this does feature Mary's sweet singing. Mary is in her element here, as she began as a country singer long before she met Les, and often sang backup for Gene Autry is his peak years.
This album includes lovely covers of Four walls, I love you so much it hurts, Bouquet of roses, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes, He'll have to go (changed to She'll have to go), End of the world, Someday you'll want me to want you and You win again, each and every one of them a country classic from the thirties, forties, fifties and early sixties. In between, there are lesser known gems which, like the classics, are impeccably performed by Mary. Apparently, Les didn't do much on this album, only occasionally adding guitar licks.
So, this is an oddly paired twofer, with the first half almost (but not quite) a Les solo instrumental album and the second half an almost (but not quite) Mary solo vocal album, but each is worth a listen. Neither could be described as essential, but both are very enjoyable, if you like their easy listening style.
