Los Hombres Calientes is an impressive debut by the New Orleans-based band of the same name led by veteran percussionist Bill Summers (Headhunters, Herbie Hancock) and young lions Irvin Mayfield on trumpet and Jason Marsalis on drums. Respect does not have to mean dull, and this sextet draws smartly from Afro-Cuban tradition and jazz. Moreover, in their mix of originals and Afro-Cubanized standards, Summers & Co. are not afraid to take chances. In "Rhumba para Jason," Mayfield growls, moans, and cries over a light, exact rumba groove. "Stardust" suggests a Brazilian-flavored bolero. More intriguingly, the music has a lived-in feel--both when it suggests an urban, genteel ballroom ("Victor el Rojo," "Stardust") and when it evokes a Caribbean neighborhood backyard rich with echoes of Africa ("Ye Ye O"). This is a band worth following. --Fernando Gonzalez

"Come and party with me, y'all," exhorts Bill Summers on Los Hombres Calientes' latest multi-culti celebration, telling you not only what the album is about and where he and co-leader Irvin Mayfield are from--the South, New Orleans to be precise--but also what their attitude is in breezing through Cuban and Brazilian styles, funk and jazz, samba and mambo and salsa. Though they have an agenda as world travelers, they're neither purists nor rootsologists; they're mostly after a good time and will toss anything into the mix to attain it. On "Carnival," their deepest and most sustained effort, their ability to synthesize styles is so secure, tributes to a pair of Crescent City legends, piano maven James Booker and bass funkster George Porter of Meters fame rub off happily on West African and Congolese numbers, and vice versa. Reaching back to the Satchmo tradition with his high, hard-edged, trilling solos, but flashing modernistic colors as well, Mayfield rides over and through the sound while Summer keeps things percolating on his usual assortment of percussion instruments. The hometown cast includes the Rebirth Brass Band, Kermit Ruffins and the Mardis Gras Indians. Party on, indeed. --Lloyd Sachs

Los Hombres keeps it hot with this CD as well.......2005-07-22
Clearly another great brainchild of Bill Summers and Irvin Mayfield. Although not my favorite (Vol.4: Vodou Houdou is THE BEST), there is some great stuff on this CD! "James Booker", tribute to the piano great, is my favorite song on the CD. Ron Markham does an awesome job on the piano, and it is evident in this recording. Irvin Mayfield has always been a musician that pays a huge amount of attention to detail and perfection, and that is certainly not compromised on this CD. It's great music, although I would argue that this CD has much more of the New Orleans feel to it than the previous one.

New Orleans's fabled Congo Square was the meeting place where blacks from Africa and the West Indies danced to their native grooves during the slavery era. Paying homage to one of the Crescent City's most historic spots is the city's own Los Hombres Calientes--percussionist Bill Summers, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, and the newest member, drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez. They take Congo Square to the Americas beyond the U.S. with Cuba's Isaac Delgado and Jamaica's Burning Spear. Recorded in New Orleans, Havana, Santo Domingo, and Bahia, New Congo Square delves into the rumba/salsa "Forforo Fo Firi," the reggae classic "I Shot the Sheriff," and the merengue-motored "Dominicanos." Mayfield plays the Brazilian bossa nova with passion on "Corcovado/Nocturnal Low Moan" and Jamaica's Rastafarian rhythms spring forth on "Nyabinghi." Stateside, the group also funks up contemporary urban dance grooves on the "New Bus Stop," and trumpeter Michael Ray and vocalist Kermit Ruffins serve up a tasty musical gumbo on "New Second Line." Los Hombres Calientes vividly connect the musical dots in the African American hemisphere. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Jazzy!.......2003-03-24
Having never considered myself a real fan of jazz music, I wasn't in any real hurry to listen to this cd when I received it. Yesterday, I finally put it on the cd player and WOW! Irvin Mayfield is one terrific trumpet player! My favorite song on the cd is Fantizias De Samba, even though it did not feature Mayfield's talent with the trumpet, it was outstanding with John Boutte and Philip Manuel on vocals. The music is catchy and Los Hombres Calientes' talent is undeniable. Their music is an original blend of Jazz, Carribean, and other music styles, and they're cd's are definately worth giving a listen to.
All that and then some..........2002-02-16
This album does not disappoint. I'm not big on Grammy nominations but they definitely got this one right. Los Hombres Vol. 3 is a treat from track 1 to 23. Irvin Mayfield's playing is fantastic and Bill Summers brings the straight thunder. The gumbo of sounds and rhythms that they bring to the table is what Latin jazz is all about. I saw this group live at Blues Alley and they were amazing.
I must add that Irvin Mayfield is a true gentleman of jazz. I am a beginning trumpet player and I contacted him with some questions. He not only answered my questions - he gave me a quick lesson when he was in town. We need more jazz musicians like him who remember (and act accordingly) the history of this great music.
Great - Deserves Wide Attention.......2001-07-22
People have probably been trying to decide where jazz ought to go from the beginning. A major turning point came when bop pretty much took dance, and a vast part of its audience from jazz. Ken Burn's series showed a musician returning from the war, hearing bop and thinking it was the greatest thing he'd ever heard; and a dancer who thought it was the worst. Diz could never get more than a few of the boppers to dance to it. Of course you could get a few people to dance to the Dead, but it didn't prove much.
A recent article in the NY Times described a new European jazz dance scene - rather techo, and reportedly dismissive of the "retro" American jazz scene. I haven't heard these CDs, and so, can't comment. I will say, though, that the blend of New Orleans, the Caribbean and modern jazz that these guys have devised is one of the best answers I can imagine to the "whither jazz?" question. The idea of combining Caribbean music and jazz is hardly novel, and the return to New Orleans-based players and styles may be retro, but this music sounds very new.
Volume Two showed clearly where they were heading, and inspired great hope. Volume Three: Congo Square really fulfills their promise. This is great music, with excellent original compositions by Mayfield and Summers. It's in no way "light" jazz - treacle for the masses. "Serious" jazz fans will find lots to enjoy, but I really think this could be enjoyed by people who've never bought a CD featuring a trumpet.
I hope this will get some serious critical attention. These guys deserve to be huge, and this is the CD to do it.
Music that is refreshing to the heart and soul!!!.......2001-04-19
This CD is a buffet of mutilple talent! What you hear is what you get, a combination of flavorful sounds from different parts of the world. From the beautiful sound of Mr. Mayfield's trumpet to outcry of the incredible smooth sounds of the percussion, together with other multiple talents in this album they stimulate the heart and soul. This cd makes one dance, think, cry, laugh, and most of all it makes one feel great! Check this CD out for yourself! Enjoy! Ofa atu!

Tremendous Talent.......2007-05-06
It's unfortunate that the review from Houston didn't know the history behind the band. I can understand how their name could confuse. LHC is a group of Americas finest musicians. Bill Summers, the extraordinary percussionist for Herbie Hancock, took several of New Orleans top young musicians on several trips to Africa and the Caribbean to explore the music of the regions. The result is a band that is able to convey a deep understanding of the roots of American Jazz through their music. The band plays an amazing range of genre's from New Orleans street funk to contemporary jazz. At a time when politics has divided people all over the world, this band has helped bring the beauty of Cuban music to the American people. I do not personally know any of the musicians but I would travel long distances to hear them. Look up Irvin Mayfields interview with Terry Gros on NPR. He's an amazing young trumpet player.
The Best Debut CD by any band any time.......2001-03-12
This CD is absolutely beautiful. It is a great debut. It is mostly afro-cuban with some New Orleans soul (Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers sings "El Barrio" a sister song of "The Ghetto". It displays the unbelievable potential of two very young musicians, Jason Marsalis and Irvin Mayfield and the abilities of a seasoned veteran (Bill Summers). This CD won the Billboard Latin Music Award for Contemporary Latin Jazz Album of the Year in 2000 even though it was released first in 1998. Their second CD is even better than this one, and I can't wait for their 3rd.
A big disappointment.......2000-09-10
I went to see this group live in Houston last night and bought this CD before the concert started. Unfortunately, I should have waited till intermission and saved the money instead. Not knowing anything about Los Hombres Calientes I expected a true Latin Jazz group as advertised in their billing. Unfortunately this group does not have one ounce of Latin blood or spirit among them and it shows in their music. One of the pieces they attempted last night was Mandinga, a great Cuban guaracha/son which they simply botched. Los Hombres Calientes must be trying to capitalize on the current popularity of Latin music, given their name and billing, however they should call themselves The Hot Men and play New Orleans jazz instead, a genre better suited for their style. If you want to listen to a real Mandinga, buy the Ruben Gonzales version on World Circuit.
The hottest thing in jazz today........1999-07-20
If my house were burning down and I could only save one disc, this would be it. Combining the intensity and passion of Latin music with the deep, deep soul of New Orleans, Los Hombres Calientes has created one of the greatests jazz recordings in recent memory. From the familiar strains of "Stardust" to the very Cuban "Rompey Saraguey", this album weaves the big Latin sound and Big Easy together in such a seamless way that, although it is very fresh, you wonder why no one has ever thought of it before. All these band members have their own solo projects going, and I for one hope that they continue to play together and make many more of these wonderful discs. I saw them at the Funky Butt in New Orleans, and they are even more fiery in concert. May the trinity of Summers, Marsalis and Mayfield bless us with great music for many years to come!!
"Cookin' With Fire".......1999-06-12
Disregarding the fact that some of the members of this group are friends of mine, I think that this album is fabulous. The CD expresses more than simply music. It expresses a feeling that can only be inspred by true musicianship and giftedness. This group wraps themselves in the the center of the Latin Jazz idiom and basks in it. I am amazed at the talent of the quite young Irvin and Jason and hope that one day all musicians find and utilize the thread of life situated in the center of sound like this group has.

Loosely translated as "The Hot Men," this New Orleans-based trio of percussionist Bill Summers, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, and drummer Jason Marsalis go way beyond their homeboy Jelly Morton's command to add tinges of Latin to jazz. Augmented by bass, guitar, piano vocal, and drums, they create a swinging and dancing musical dish prepared with equal ingredients from all over the African diaspora: from the parade pulsations of "Comparsa N.O." to Argentine amour of "Tangeaux-zon." Marsalis, the boy wonder of his famous family, assimilates an astonishing array of moods and grooves, whether he's swinging a Latin mix on Roberta Flack's hit "Feel Like Makin' Love," laying down a roots riddim on the Black Uhuru-sounding "Rasta Renegade," or Afro-Americanizing the Cuban beat on "Fongo Sunk." A young Miles Davis with a tropical tone best describes Mayfield's sound on the three-part, "Cuban Suite," which includes an impressionistic string quartet, a balmy bolero, and a moving montuno. Bill Summers, the star of this outfit, is perhaps the best American-born African drummer ever. His sacred rhythms on "Alabi Oyo E" and "Suite Obatala" echo his work on Quincy Jones's Roots soundtrack, and the booty-shaking remake of "Chameleon," which he made famous with Herbie Hancock and Parliament's "We Want the Funk," reminds everybody where the "one" is. --Eugene Holley Jr.

An eclectic trip through many musical neighborhoods........2001-10-03
Having lived with, and listened to, Hombres Calientes, Volume 2, for several months, I have come to the conclusion that the disc is like a subway car ride through many musical neighborhoods. After each cut, it is as though the listener re-enters the darkness, each time emerging to a different beat, style or rhythm. While not all of the tracks work, enough should catch your attention in a first listening to prompt you to go back and re-visit and experience. Soon, you may find yourself enjoying every stop on the route.
The Most Smoking Live Band in the World today.......2001-03-12
I have seen Los Hombres Calientes at least 7 times including each of the past 3 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festivals. Their live show is one of the greatest shows I have ever seen. I know why they won the Billboard Music Award. Such imagination, technique, and musicianship from each of their members. Yvette is a beautiful woman whose presence on stage enhances the feeling of the crowd and teaches some of us who are not so great at dancing how to move gracefully to music. Irvin Mayfield is going to be near the top of the list of the best trumpeters ever...up there with Miles, Wynton, and Freddy. Bill Summers is the most gifted percussionist on the planet. I leave both of their first 2 CD's in my CD player all the time and can't wait for their 3rd.
A big disappointment.......2000-09-10

Absolutely Outstanding!.......2000-06-24
This CD is definitely one of my absolute favorites. It is always one of the 5 cd's in my cd player and I have another copy for the car. This is truly inspired and ORIGINAL music. I'm lucky enough to live in New Orleans, so I can sometimes catch LHC live! Bill Summers (of HeadHunters fame) is a musical genius. LHC have a great international sound mixed with some true new orleans flavour! Irvin Mayfield has got to be the most talented young artist around. His style is really his own, and his compositions are original and moving. You don't have to think twice about this purchase. This CD is a MUST HAVE.
Simply amazing..........1999-11-13
Sometimes, when a group you love releases a new disc, there is a nervous anticipation in the days leading up to it. "Can they do it again? Will it be fresh?" etc... All these thoughts ran through my mind. Have no fear. Los Hombres Calientes do not become complacent on their second outing. From the string quartet on "Cuban Suite, Pt. 1" to the NOLA rap/brass band mixed in with latin vocals on "A Comer Y A Descargar", they have beguiled and amazed me yet again. Summers, Marsalis, Mayfield, et al drive home their intoxicating blend of latin rythms and Big Easy soul. I am not kidding; nothing else sounds like these guys. From the straight NOLA jazz sound at the beginning of "Blues De Enredo" to the funk smackdown of "Chameleon/We Want The Funk" that ends the disc, you will be amazed at how all of these sounds can coexist and become greater than the sum of their parts.
LHC is on the move, indeed! If you are one of the many Jazzoholics who believe they have heard it all and that there is nothing original out there anymore, slap this one in your changer, and change your outlook.

Expect the unexpected from Los Hombres Caliente...........2001-07-30
New Congo Square - Volume 3 is an ambitious recording that demonstrates the link between the music of New Orleans and the Afro-Caribbean diaspora.
The early going is straight-ahead jazz ("Brother Running'," "Brother Getting Caught"). As the sessions pick up momentum the band changes directions and heads for Brazil, ("Fantazias de Samba,") Cuba ("Foforo Fo Firi,") Jamaica ("I Shot The Sheriff" and "Jah Rastafari,") The Dominican Republic ("Dominicanos,") New Orleans ("New Second Line") and Africa ("Warrior Suite"). There is also a tribute to the late Curtis Mayfield ("New Bus Stop") and 70's style funk ("Call It What You Want"). In total, there is 78 minutes of music and 23 tracks.
Featured guests are Cuban crooner Issac Delgado, members of Irakere and Burning Spear, the Rebirth and Coolbone brass bands, vocalist John Boutte, keyboardist Ronald Markham and vocalist Earl Brooks Jr. to name a few.
Bill Summers, Irvin Mayfield and Delfayo Marsalis hold down the fort. Cuban drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez (formerly of Irakere) is the latest addition to the band, replacing Jason Marsalis.
The ride is adventurous and often unpredictable. Never the less it is a journey you don't want to miss. Los Hombres Caliente have the situation well in hand.
