Editorial Reviews
From Jazziz
As the album title implies, pianist Berkman constructs his music with care and craftsmanship; he also fills it with sly surprises and sensual appeal. Unlike many mainstream players, Berkman doesn't rely on old formulas and he isn't risk-averse. In his tunes, harmonies flow in unanticipated directions, silences open suddenly like trap doors, and quirky rhythmic displacements keep both listeners and bandmembers on their toes. But for all its musical rigor, Berkman's music is also full of romance, mystery, and good spirits. Berkman's translucent, rounded tone gives the music a warm, lustrous glow, but an underlying toughness never lets the music get sentimental or unfocused. Each of the album's 12 tunes is markedly different than the rest. His prepared-piano duet with drummer Brian Blade is a compelling, funky rhythmic-textural workout, while his short solo on "Tiny Prairie Landscape" is a charming Aaron Copeland-meets-Chick Corea piece of Americana. The title track, featuring a cryptic soprano solo from Steve Wilson, is a little musical enigma, while "Sense of Loss" is a devastatingly direct evocation of heartache. Berkman's quintet includes another crafty sensualist, trumpeter Tom Harrell, whose solos on "Not a Christmas Song" and "Slides" are little gems of elliptical logic and grace.

Dan Zanes, lead singer of the 1980s roots-rock band the Del Fuegos, didn't need to enlist the high-profile help of pals Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega to produce a crowd-pleasing kids' record, but he got it anyway. On Rocket Ship Beach, where traditional tunes such as "Polly Wolly Doodle" (with Crow) and "Erie Canal" (with Vega) mingle in loosey-goosey, just-for-the-fun-of-it fashion with originals such as the plucky "All My Friends Live in the Woods" (written by Bad Company buddy Simon Kirke), Zanes exhibits the same plugged-in exuberance that gave his former band its unpredictable zing. Besides the no-amateurs instrumentation, which includes Zanes on guitar, lap steel, banjo-mandolin, and studiophone, and G.E. Smith on banjo-mandolin and guitar as part of a kickin' string band that performs the classic "King Kong Kitchie," plus a cluster of others, what stands out most about this 17-track funfest is its draw-you-in friendliness. Pitching in with the pros (who also include dancehall rapper Rankin' Don--he delivers the gruff stuff on "Father Goose" and "Sunny Side of the Street") are family friends such as the gang of West Indian babysitters turned vocal group the Sandy Girls, who give it up to impressive, get-you-boogying effect on "Emmanuel Road," and a kindergarten class that contributes, adorably, to "Sidewalks of New York." All told, this is way hipper than most kids' records and it also razzle-dazzles with its packaging--Rocket Ship Beach arrives in a chunky, colorful board-book illustrated with sweet, fantasy-fueled beachside scenes by banjo player and Zanes's brother-in-law, Donald Saaf. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
music is in the air. it's alive and it's here for everyone. if you can play an old song, you can write a new song. make it a family parade, all around the kitchen cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo. or how about a family band? on the front steps, in the back yard, in the park, on the sidewalk, in the basement. if you can brush your teeth, you can play tamborine. if you can tell a joke, you can sing.
festival five records is the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance. festival five records is the sound of a group of 9 and 10 year olds singing a sixty year old broadway song in the basement of a 150 year old row house. it's the sound of a 40-year-old dad on a blue porch singing a 400 year old story song about a frog that marries a mouse. when you feel that music in the air, try to catch as much as possible.

It's great!.......2007-01-27
I'm a first-time Mom who was looking for a CD both my daughter and I could enjoy. We rec'd this CD at Christmas along with "Buzz Buzz" by Laurie Berkner. This one is my personal favorite. I think I enjoy it as much, if not more than my daughter (who is 1). The songs are addicting and I, like a previous reviewer, find myself singing/humming them even when my daughter is not around. Polly Wolly Doodle and King Kong Kitchie are fabulous! I highly recommend giving this CD a spin. I'm sure my daughter will love it even more when she gets a little older.
Honestly, this CD sucks.......2007-01-18
I was excited to receive this CD because of its great reviews. Once I received it however, I found it barely listenable. My toddler daughter looked and me and said "Off!Off!" and we took it off the CD player after only 10 minutes.
People can make of Raffi all they want, but at least his music is tolerable!
Don't waste your money on this lemon of a CD.
What an awesome CD!!!.......2006-12-20
My 2 year old and 1 year old think this CD ROCKS! My son will point to the CD player and cry and whine until I turn it on. From song one they both wiggle, giggle and dance all over. The songs are very folksy, upbeat, and easy to groove too. Get this CD and watch your kids get jiggy wit' it!
rocket ship beach review.......2006-11-10
Rocket Ship Beach was my introduction to Dan Zanes. I have a new son and I was searching for some music we could both enjoy. I found this and thought I would give it a shot. The cd is wonderful. The music is addicting and I find myself driving down the road singing to myself....without my son in the car! Polly Wolly Doodle, the first track, is one of my favorites (and not because I am a Sheryl Crow fan). Another beautiful song is "Hello". This cd is upbeat, fun and yet different from some more typical childrens music. My son really enjoys the different sounds and rhythms on the cd. The cd has a few little introductions where you can hear children, a phone ringing, ect. This cd is sure to put you in a good mood. I highly recommend it! I am actually waiting for another Dan Zanes cd to arrive I liked it so much.
we all love it.......2006-08-05
The whole family can enjoy this music, unlike many of the other kid's music that is so lame.

Just as adult authors from Isabel Allende to Clive Barker are writing kids' books these days, rock & roll artists (remember Jerry Garcia and David Grisman's 1993 recording Not for Kids Only?) are reaching out to the younger set. Thank goodness, we say... and scoot over, Barney. Festival Five Records is the children's music label founded by Dan Zanes, former lead singer of the Del Fuegos, where he hopes to capture "the sound of a neighborhood band on the front stoop playing tunes after dinner for a family dance." His third CD release, Night Time! ("a musical cool-down disc for all ages underground"), comes on the heels of Rocket Ship Beach and Family Dance. Here, traditional tunes such as the West Indian sea shanty "Pay Me My Money Down" and the African American folk song "Down by the Riverside" take their place next to folksy, hypnotic Zanes originals, including "Night Owl," "Firefly," and "Linger for Awhile," a song aimed to reflect Brooklyn stoop life. Mandolins, harmonicas, trombones, fiddles, electric guitars (and more!) add to the contagious buoyancy of this eclectic 16-track CD. Our favorite is "Rattlin' Bog," a delightfully nonsensical cumulative song, led by Father Goose and featuring the kids in the Dandelion Chorus. As in his other CDs, Zanes invites friends and family to join the fun, along with heavy-hitters such as Aimee Mann, Lou Reed, and Dar Williams. This irresistible collection, appealing to toddlers and easy on their parents, is packaged in a colorful board book illustrated by Donald Saaf with starry scenes of moonlit music making. An excellent addition to any children's music library. --Karin Snelson

Different from House Party.......2007-05-14
I ordered this CD along with Dan Zanes House Party CD. My daughter loves the fun songs from the House Party CD better than the Night Time CD. I can't get her to listen to the slow songs on this cd although I really enjoy them.
We love this cd.......2007-02-11
This is in our babies room. Each night when we get ready for bed we listen to this cd. It winds her down a little and makes diaper changing a little more easier for us.
children's music.......2006-10-29
This music is mainly for children but some adults will find something to like about it, too. The music is diverse and creative. Children are sure to like it if you play it for them. Of course, it's hard getting children to listen to music if they don't want to, but give it time and I'm sure they will enjoy this collection of songs.
great music!.......2006-08-05
Our 22 mo. old loves this music much more than the kiddy tunes that mom and dad can hardly bear to listen to.
Dan Zanes Nightime is "Happy Music".......2006-07-27
I was introduced to the Dan Zanes Nightime CD while I was visiting my 3 1/2 year old grandson. He listens to it everynight before going to sleep with "Pay Me You Owe Me" being his single favorite song. I fell in love with the CD because each time I play it I can vividly recall the pleasure it gave us both. The choice of songs on the CD gives all ages something to remember and before you know it you will be singing and dancing along with the music.

Still Funny.......2007-01-18
The Allan Sherman Box Set has been a purchase I will not regret. Anyone who lived through the late 50'-early 70's can find something to laugh at. A lot of the humor is "dated", but most is not, and my 14-year-old son has even become a huge fan. Allan Sherman was a tremendous talent, a pre-cursor to the hilarity of "Wierd Al" and others who re-lyricize so well. I enjoyed Allan Sherman in his time, and I enjoy him still. I recommend this box set to anyone who could use a good belly laugh and who does not need to be slapped in the face with profanity to enjoy humor.
DEFINITELY For Sherman Lovers.......2006-08-04
If you've been waiting for many years to hear Sherman's tunes again (and your old LPs are more than a little scratched or you got rid of your turntable a long time ago) and you are not satisfied with the limited selection available on the Rhino Records Greatest Hits CD -- you will LOVE this. The set is a bit pricey but it's really well worth the cost when you consider the hours of entertainment that you will likely get from listening to it.
The old favorites sound great (the backing orchestra led by pianist Lou Busch and the "Allan Sherman" singers are terrific). Now, there is a good chance that you've never before heard several of the songs which are available on this compilation. And a number of these are not among Sherman's best. But there are enough good to excellent "unheard" tunes to more than make up for that.
For the die-hard Sherman fan -- who doesn't mind the cost -- BUY IT!
Pricey, but Definitely Worth Every Penny!.......2006-03-23
I was happy that Warner Bros. finally saw fit to release the entire back catalog of Allan Sherman's material onto CD. Unfortunately, Rhino Handmade was the releasing label who gave it a limited release of 4000 copies and charged $120 for the 6-CD set. I saw the set at Tower Records retailing for $132!!
Well, after a bit of patience, I was able to secure a new copy of the set from Amazon for just under $100, thanks to my tax refund. Though still pricey, after I played the opening bars of "The Ballad of Harry Lewis" in its CRYSTAL CLARITY, I got goosebumps. So after all of my bitching and moaning, I have to say that the set is definitely worth the investment.
Too bad that they didn't include the "Peter and the Commissar", but at least that's available elsewhere on CD. Same with the songs Sherman sang when he voiced the Cat in the Hat for the animated special in the early 70s. And the rumored golf jokes album is nowhere to be seen, and methinks he never actually recorded any of the material before his untimely death in 1973.
The box does reveal that there were a few unreleased tracks that still remain that way due to publishing rights, but there's so much rare and unreleased anyway (and again that CRYSTAL CLARITY) makes up for it.
Happy, happy, happy!!! Now, if they could give the same box set treatment for Bob Newhart, Bill Cosby, Steve Martin, The Smothers Brothers, and Jonathan Winters (utilizing rare and unreleased stuff as well as completing the unreleased back catalog), then Rhino Handmade will become my label of choice!
What we've all been waiting for..........2006-03-02
I was overjoyed when I first saw the notice that this set has been released; now that it's arrived, I'm even happier. Allan Sherman fans (and if you're not one, you should be) have been wishing for a CD set of his recordings for years, and here it is, wonderfully presented. Not only does it contain every album he released- well, every Warner Brothers album, at least- but it has a plethora of never released stuff, from promotional items for products to a great parody of "My Fair Lady." All that and a great booklet with a bio and all.
One mild issue I have is the arrangement- it's eight albums and lots of other stuff on six discs. It's understandable, I guess, that they had to break some albums up, and I believe all the tracks follow in some logical order, but I have to work it out. The track listings in the booklet can be a bit hard to make out as well, making it a little difficult to pick one song. And while they've been thoughtful enough to include the front and back of every album (and more!), it's a bit difficult to read some through the clear plastic back of the cardboard boxes (which, by the way, slip out of the box a bit too easily).
But all of those are minor external quibbles. It's the music that counts, and it's great. If you've ever enjoyed Allan Sherman, get this set. If you've never heard him, you have a great discovery ahead of you.
Allan Sherman's boxed set.......2006-02-28
I grew up listening to Allan Sherman and had been looking for his works on CD for years. The first 3 CD's in the set I had as LPs when I was a kid and are as great now as they were then. The last couple of CD's were recorded later and aren't bad....but they are not Allan in his prime.

Fun Part of My Young Adulthood.......2006-11-30
This was one of those LPs I kept since I wasn't sure it would ever come out on CD. Nonetheless, I punched it into the search box every once in a while to see if it was available. Suddenly, success!
What I like most about this CD is how it doesn't preach, but just takes pot shots at marijuana use and culture. It has an innocent edge to it as it was recorded before the medical marijuana issue made things so much more serious (as in the serious conditions people treat with it). And, of course, it is very funny! And part of the joke is that it neither demonizes pot use nor makes any effort to dignify just getting high for the sake of doing so.
If you are into 70's nostalgia, this is a nice period piece, although not so dated that it isn't funny. As a matter of fact, I think it is funnier as a period piece than when it was contemporary. My only regret is that the paperback book that goes with it wasn't re-issued, reformatted to be the size of a CD case, with the CD. But that could still happen in the future-- hint-hint. There could be a slip case that would fit the CD package as it is now and the book. The book wasn't long anyway, so I'm sure it could be done.
Have fun! :-{D}
An adult's gutwrenching laughs.......2006-02-27
This is the most hilarious audio cd I have ever heard. It is good any way you like it.
I suggest this to anyone, smoker or not.

Two classics of her late 60s pop era!.......2007-05-23
Dionne, one of the greatest singers, ever. She makes a piece of easy-listening fluff into an emotional experience, finding the grit and soul of the lyrics and interpreting in her inimitable style, her flawless timing and phrasing.
These are two of my fave Dionne LPs ever, and to find them remastered and paired on a limited edition.... I thought I was dreaming. Rhino has gone all out, packaging, sound, everything.
I know a lot of people prefer the earlier Bacharach stuff, or her later 70s stuff, citing this as easy listening. Nonsense. It's great stuff, and she does Bacharach like no one else could or ever will.
A shame there will be no more in this series.... I was praying for a double-set of Here Where There Is Love and Her I Am.
Splendorous Dionne in two of her best albums.......2007-01-03
One of the most original voices and smartest phrasings I have ever heard on popular music. Her repertoire takes the best and the worst from Bacharach & David team along with some other authors.
'Promises, Promises' is the real pearl in this package, the title song is simply brilliant Bacharach-David at their best, and Bacharach's arrangement is pure fire. Also Bacharach-David's originals 'Who Is Gonna Love Me', and 'Whoever You Are I Love You' and pure gems with beautiful Bacharach's arrangements.
There are also some pearls from the original 'I'll Never Fall in Love Again' album and these include the title song as arranged in a collaboration of Burt Bacharach with Larry Wilcox and the single version of the pretty song 'Paper Maché'.
Great arrangers are also present in the package along with Burt Bacharach. Features Peter Matz arranging 'Little Green Apples', the sensational 'Where Am I Going', and the great Armando Manzanero's song 'Yesterday I Heard The Rain' (English version to 'Esta Tarde Vi Llover').
Also features arrangements by the great Don Sebesky on' This Guy's in Love With You', 'Where is Love' and the great Bacharach-David original 'Wanting Things'.
Simply Breath Taking.......2006-07-18
Included here are two of Dionne's original LP's and what a pair they make. Although not a huge fan of the "Promises, Promises" album (with the exception of the title track, This Girl's in Love With You, and Little Green Apples)this album still a huge showcase of this lady's talent. The second album, "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" is one of my personal favorites. The lead track "The Wine is Young" is simply awe inspiring and this awe grows with each song on this second album. Simply put a MUST HAVE for any fan of Ms. Warwick or just plain GREAT music. I also congratulate the studio for their wonderful photos and liner notes which really provide the inside track on these albums. Now stop reading this and go treat yourself with this purchase!
The cream of the crop.......2004-07-23
No one but no one did (or does) Bacharach/David music like Ms. Dionne Warwick. This remastered set of albums from 1968-1969 captures the songwriters at their creative peak, and Dionne at the apex of her vocal and interpretive powers.
There are also covers of popular songs of the day such as "Where Am I Going" and "Didn't We" that are superb. If Dionne isn't the Queen of Champagne Soul, I don't know who is. This is lounge music at its finest.
In addition to the brilliant packaging and wonderful liner notes by David Nathan, there are additional bonus tracks that did not appear on the original releases and a ton of rare photos.
The remastering is beyond description -- these recordings sound brand new; crisp, clean, no air/hiss...just magnificent.
This set of music is achingly beautiful. Each song here epitomizes the classic "Dionne Warwick sound," that brand of romantic melodies and arrangements that are sweetly melancholy. Hats off to Rhino for making these classics available again, even if only for a limited time. You owe yourself a copy.
Superb!!!!!.......2004-07-14
Bravo! Rhino does it again. Excellent remastering and a fine compilation. There will be 5 thousand happy people in this world because this record is fantastic and they know that nobody else will be able to buy this record cause Rhino only printed 5000 of them. It is almost too late.

Rhino rules.......2005-07-09
AS with their other recordings, Rhino makes the MGM catalogue sound like it was recorded yesterday. Couple that with the excellent graphics and liner notes and you have a movie soundtrack lover's dream come true
Comprehensive soundtracks. As complete as you can get........2004-06-23
This movie soundtrack compilation from Rhino of ?Summer Stock? and ?In the Good Old Summertime? has all of the music from both films, including some outtakes. One minor drawback ? some songs have all extraneous material removed, such as dialogue bridges, tap sounds, etc. It gives them a somewhat flat sound. Overall, though, this a great CD for fans of these movies. Sound quality is excellent.

Return of A Classic: Guadalcanal Diary's Best Album.......2007-06-26
This band never put out a bad album and I humbly submit 2x4 is their best. That being said, the release of 2x4 on CD corrects a great music injustice perpetrated by the EMI braintrust who likely thought it was either too regional or too alt to sell(further evidence record company executives have wooden ears separaed by a vacuum).
Where to start??? One must first address the great writing. Murray Attaway can write introspective and accessible songs. Quite spiritial with dark tones yet never out and out depressing, probably because the melodies lift and the guitars ring out. Then there's the wicked spot-on doses of humor that come in time to help shift the mood in a differnt direction, keeping the listener interested.
Music, more than many forms of art, is time period dependent in both the artist's and listener's life. That said, this stuff holds up pretty well because it is rich with multiple interpretations for the listener...And it's a real sonic treat with great guitar based melodies to give any Kinks fan a thrill. Pop music can get more complicated, but it can not get much better than this slice of musical nirvana.
I urge any fan of melodic pop with an edge (think Kinks) to purchase this. It's a pop classic that deserves it's due and we, the listeners, are the benefactors of this great sounding re-release. Justice is better late than never!
Guadalcanal Diary 2X4.......2007-01-31
This is a must have for anyone interested in 80's era "college music" rock. I'm not sure why this band didn't gain broader acceptance, except that Athens, GA is only entitled to one megaband.
A classic re-work!!!.......2007-01-28
Guadalcanal diary's career was sadly too short, maybe because the Athens sound ( REM, B-52's )was wearing thin by the time this CD came out originally in 1991. This re-issue, with bonus tracks and outtakes, clearly shows the potential this band had. One of the best re-packaging in recent memory, you'll wish this band had released more material like this. There are more CD's by the band, but this is definitely the place to start.
Underappreciated Gem.......2006-09-12
I had all of GD's cassettes back in my college days and it's nice to see these albums re-issued so that I can add them to my current disc collection. There are lots of winks and nods to obvious influences but tons of originality. Really nice dynamics within the basic band structure and good singing. I always enjoyed the pure jangly guitar pop of the 80's and this CD is a really fine example. Fave tracks are "Litany(Life Goes On)","3AM", and "Little Birds".
I caught them at The Vogue at Broad Ripple in Indianapolis circa 1988. It was a really high energy, great sounding show. I remember Jeff playing in what appeared to be big silk pajamas.
It would be nice to catch them again someday. Until then, I'll dig on the re-releases.
Their best in my humble opinion.......2006-07-13
Murray Attaway is a great songwriter, and Jeff Walls
is a smoking guitar player, and they are both at
their very finest on this album. Buy it and make
your ears very happy !
BTW - Guadalcanal are more of an ATLANTA band
than an ATHENS band, as they are originally from Marietta Georgia
( a burb of ATL ). True, a couple of them have at times lived
near Athens, but they are basically from land of the BIG CHICKEN!

Customer Reviews:
Buy this if only for It Crawled Into My Hand.......2006-02-24
Can't believe someone called the music dated. Must be one of those effete snobs Agnew used to rail about. LOL. I guess you could call Gregorian chants dated. I guess you could call Floyd Cramer-ish country piano dated. Hell, punk rock is dated, now. Its all dated now. If it isn't hip-hop, its dated. (and some would argue that's dated, too!) What a weak arguement.
Simply put, the Fugs ICIMHH is their masterpiece. Listen to how many styles they tackle successfully and weave them seamlessly together in a scatalogical pastiche that no one else could match, or even attempt. The second side of It Crawled Into My Hand is the Fugs' paean to Abbey Road's second side. So many classics.
While our other reviewer thinks the early ESP albums are the heart of the Fugs oeuvre, I beg to disagree. It was here, while the band was signed to a major label and could afford to bring in top session players, that they were able to flesh out their songs and reach their maximum potential. Listen to the blistering guitar on Crystal Liason, the aforementioned, country piano on Ramses II, the operatic baritone on The Divine Toe Pt.II. There is no question this is a fully realized production that makes the ESP albums sound almost amateurish.
Finally, this long forgotten masterpiece gets to see the light of day again. Too bad you have to shell out so much for it. It would have been nice to see this as a single release since it was the apex of their career.
It will crawl into your hand, honest!.......2005-06-06
So far, this is the only CD release of the Fugs' finest album, their out-of-print masterpiece: It crawled into my hand, honest. The best-funded and best-produced of the Fugs' albums, ICIMHH is rich with references to surrealism, Egytpology, politics, psychedelia, and (of course) the arcane sexual practices of Sixties hipsters. The range of musical styles is pure post-Beatles anything-goes, from Gregorial chant to chamber orchestra to folk to Nashville country, and the lyrical/satirical (satyrical?) wit of Ed Sanders, Tuli Kupferberg, and Ken Weaver is stroboscopic. The 40-page liner-notes booklet is a knowledgeable and honest history of the permutations of the Fugs throughout their career.
Other Fugs albums included in this 3-CD collection have not stood up as well to the passage of time (as least, of my time), but it doesn't matter. Start with Track 11 to begin ICIMHH. I expect some previous Amazon reviewers didn't get that far, and I sympathize.
ICIMHH is an important incursion of the avant guarde into rock history, on a par with The Mothers' We're only in it for the Money. It's funny, and it's beautiful, and, oh yeah, it's not for the easily offended.
for diehard fans only.......2004-08-13
these recordings are where the fugs mix of sexual outrageousness, political radicalism and social satire started to wear thin. since neither tuli kupferberg or ed sanders were musicians their music got weaker as they went along. some of the musical styles satirized here were already passe in 1970 and are now totally extinct. strangely these recordings are both politically radical and musically dated. look, the fugs first album and the fugs second album are classic and essential to anyone who wants to know or understand what the 1960s counterculture was like. both cds are miracles and highly recommended. electromagnetic steamboat is for diehard fans only.
Revolution and Sex!!!.......2003-11-21
Yup! According to The Fabulous Fugs that seemed to be the answer in the turbulent '60s as well as in these troubled times. I am so glad to have got this 3-cd set thru Amazon Marketplace sellers. Some of you older guys might remember these fellas. After cutting a few pretty rough (but brilliant) albums for the ESP label they somehow got a contract with Frank Sinatra's Reprise label and put out 4 more works of brilliance: TENDERNESS JUNCTION; IT CRAWLED INTO MY HAND, HONEST!; THE BELLE OF AVENUE 'A' and GOLDEN FILTH. All these records are here COMPLETE on the first two cds. The third disc has some stuff they cut for Atlantic Records that was never released by that label although some of these tunes made it to "Tenderness Junction" in a remixed or slightly different version. Especially entertaining here is Ed Sanders' 15 minute 'Prom Night' monologue right before they sing their doowop classic, the immortal "Wet Dream." There are also some promo tracks. The Rhino cd comes with a neat booklet with lots of information and some great photos and album cover art. DON'T MISS THIS ESSENTIAL PACKAGE! Grab it while you can and put it on the shelf right next to the Mothers Of Invention and Bonzo Dog DooDah Band cds. Now, if Rhino would only release the 3 funky albums Little Richard did for the Reprise label on a double cd I'd be a REALLY happy guy. Back to the land of dreams. Cheers!

Outstanding early all girls band.......2006-12-24
One of the most outstanding early 70's band aound. I first heard them at a friends house in Twin Falls Idaho. We quickly orderd all the records from our local music shop. We had friends in Spokan WA who also told us about them. We thought they didn't get the promotion they really deserved.
Fanny .......2006-10-31
I loved this group when I was 18. They came to the University of Houston to play and , even though I was not a student, went to see them in person. The best live show I have ever seen. Music was clean and clear and my little brother , who was 15, danced to their music in the UC.
I have had all their albums and played them till they were so worn, I had to throw them away.
If you like Girl Bands and you like good music, Fanny is it! This release brings back the good ole days when life was good and simple. Rock on!
FANNY IS AWESOME!!!.......2006-07-07
I just wish this set weren't so pricey-lol-because I'd snatch it up in a millisecond!!!! In the past year, I've purchased their LP's on E-bay "Charity Ball", "Fanny Hill", and "Mother's Pride"-MAN-they just don't make stuff like this anymore!!! What a band-such a shame they didn't get the recognition they most definitly deserved!!!!
One of my all-time favorite bands!!!
Fanny was the first.......2006-06-30
"Fanny Hill" was one of the first rock albums I ever listened to in its entirety - and repeatedly. It belonged to my older brother, and, bless his heart, he never seemed to mind his ten-year-old sister going through his record collection. Before I had any preconceived ideas about what rock should look or sound like, I remember being really excited by the fact that here was a group of women who played their own instruments, wrote their own songs, AND made good, loud music! Looking back, I can definitely say that listening to "Fanny Hill" raised my consciousness in more ways than one.
I've yet to listen to all of the songs included in this handsome boxset (thanks again, Gary!) - I'm kinda stuck on my favorites from "Fanny Hill" - but kudos to Rhino for doing the band justice and for bringing Fanny back in all their glory.
Actually, this is one killer set.......2004-10-04
The Reprise years were the meat and potatoes of Fanny. Starting with Richard Perry as their Svengali and, later, working with the likes of Todd Rundgren, they developed into a smart, sexy, real rock and roll band as their middle period (1971-72) evidences on this set. The review that asked about Butter Boy not being on the box was correct. It wasn't on Reprise. They did an album for Casablanca in 1974 called Rock and Roll Survivors which had their remake of "I've Had It" and the almost hit, "Butter Boy"...but this wasn't the same Fanny. Key members were gone and so the magic. Indeed, the band itself gave up within a year of that album, as I recall.
This is the set to get. Well laid out, it tells a great rock and roll story.

Album Description
Nicolette was one of the great session singers in `70s rock, providing honeyed harmonies for Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, the Doobie Brothers and Emmylou Harris before launching a successful career on her own. And this live concert, recorded at the famed Sunset Strip venue on December 20, 1978, and previously available as a promo-only disc, captures her fresh from the release of her debut solo album "Nicolette", which went Top 20. Indeed, ground zero of the entire SoCal `70s rock scene was at the Roxy this night. Limited edition of 5000 copies!

I first heard this great LP when I lucked out and found the LP "Warner Bros Radio Show" at Arrons Records Shop on Melrose back in the 1980's. While I like Nicolette's other albums (now CDs) this is my favorite of all. Why? Because it has a "personal" feel to it. You get a chance to hear Nicolette sing AND speak. From songs like "clear light" and "last in love" through "baby don't do it" Nicolette is in great voice and has a fine "all-star" band behind her which includes the brillant Albert Lee on guitar. Nicolette even sings a song in French (French Waltz) that so charming it just COULD make you cry. All and all a super performance by beautiful woman and spirt who has left us way to soon. However Nicolette LIVES on through this recording, and for anyone who wants to hear her again please buy this CD and, as I always will do, go back to December 20, 1978 (the date of this live recording). You will find Nicolette there, her legacy and her heart.
