4 out of 5 stars Climb aboard the Dream Weaver Train!.......2007-06-21

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Gary Wright's impressive musical odyssey can be summed up by the title of the album "Dream Weaver." From his early roots in Spooky Tooth, to his terrific session work (Including but not limited to a multitude of George Harrison albums and one with Ringo Starr) to the underrated Wonderwheel, his unique keyboard style has given him a resume thirty pages long. To many he was a secret until 1976.

"Dream Weaver" would become a worldwide sensation and for good reason. The title track was one of the best of the era. With a hypnotic keyboard sound that sucked, you in from the opening bar it hasn't lost any luster thirty plus years removed.

The record wasn't about being a one track wonder. The second most requested tune from the album "Love Is Alive" took the listener into another direction of space. More upbeat in its construction the tune was a perfect opener for the recording. "Made To Love Her" is similar in construction to the opening track. "Much Higher" is once again upbeat and catchy from the first listen. The album ends on the slower but pretty "Feel For Me."

The accolades received were all well deserved. Here is one more. Lost in the shuffle is the help Gary had during the recording sessions. Ronnie Montrose (Montrose) lent his guitar, Jim Keltner took care of some of the drums (Played on hundreds of sessions as a drummer including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and all solo Beatles excluding Paul) and Andy Newmark (Played with John Lennon, George Harrison, Roxy Music, and George Benson to name a few) contributed on drums as well.

If you need to upgrade a warn out vinyl copy or haven't climbed aboard the Dream Weaver Train, it is time.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

5 out of 5 stars THE FIRST TRUE SYNTHESIZER ROCK ALBUM EVER........2007-03-08

I will be be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "THE DREAM WEAVER" by one of Rock's greatest 70's artists and one of the most gifted synthesizer and keyboard players ever. I give you MR. GARY WRIGHT. "THE DREAM WEAVER" was originally released in 1975 on Vinyl/LP and Cassette on the Warner Brothers Records label. I purchased the very first release of this legendary album on Compact Disc in the late 1980's which gives this legendary album a fresh new life than ever before. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

GARY WRIGHT will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for writing and releasing Rock's first true synthesizer album ever of its kind. This album would singlehandedly change the sound of Rock n' Roll and would forever change the way music would be recorded instrumental wise. Synthesizers and keyboards would now play a more important key role as an instrument more than ever after the release of "THE DREAM WEAVER" in 1975. GARY WRIGHT would influence many other great artists that were to come such as the legendary GARY NUMAN with his 1979 hit single "Cars." In my opinion, "THE DREAM WEAVER" is a true testament of the brilliance and genius of a extremely talented individual and a fine fitting tribute to one of the greatest breakthrough synthesizer and keyboard players and artists ever that was truly far ahead of his time.

And now it is time to let the music speak for itself and do all of the talking. This album begins with the breakthrough slow soothing mellow synthesized special effects Rocker "Love Is Alive," the beautiful synthesized filled Rocker "Let It Out," the breathtaking thrashing Rocker "Can't Find The Judge," the beautiful smooth synthesized mellow Rocker "Made To Love You," the groundbreaking synthesized Rocker that includes the Ronnie Montrose blistering guitar licks and riffs, "Power Of Love," the forever GARY WRIGHT trademark special effects slow synthesized Rocker "The Dream Weaver," the merciless soulful synthesized Rocker "Blind Feeling," the incredible funkish synthesized heartfelt Rocker "Much Higher" and the beautiful slow synthesized Rocker "Feel For Me." May I also add that WRIGHT'S blistering lead vocals are on the money and perfectly sung on this album. He delivers some of the most breathtaking lead vocals ever.

Overall, this is one hell of an album worth seeking further into and checking out especially if you are a newcomer and a new beginner to the then-rare sound and music of GARY WRIGHT. However, there are many GARY WRIGHT Greatest Hits packages and Anthologies on Compact Disc that you might want to research further into and purchase other than or besides this album.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This legendary album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one GARY WRIGHT album that no devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, GARY WRIGHT has sort of led a very low profiled life in the Rock n' Roll world. However, GARY WRIGHT has released new albums and has stayed current with the synthesized technology that he helped contribute to 70's Rock music and beyond. I know for fact that we have not seen or heard the last of GARY WRIGHT yet. GARY WRIGHT still has so much to contribute to Rock n' Roll that it is impossible not to imagine Rock n' Roll without him. GARY WRIGHT'S place along with his contributions and accomplishments in Rock n' Roll history are well secured and will never be forgotten. I guess you can safely say that GARY WRIGHT has left his mark in Rock n' Roll history forever. So here's to you Gary. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. GARY WRIGHT RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars Gary's Masterpiece, Set the mold for all that followed.......2007-01-21

I can clearly remember one moonlit night in January 1976, When the FM DJ announced this album, before he played the entire first side ( this was about 8 years befor the continuous running cd for those of you born after Carter was president). He stated that it was almost an exclusively synthesized album from the legendary Gary Wright. Then I heard the opening few seconds of the swooshing orchestral sounds of Dreamweaver, and I was hooked. This album meant so much to me in '76. In February '76, One of my best friends died from accidental shooting while playing with his dad's pistol. He asked me a few days before he died if I thought this song was cool, cause he loved it. I whole heartedly agreed with him. Then I got the news in the empty school hallway over the loudspeaker, walking my way to my first class and running late with a pass. I was very depressed for months after that, insomniac over it. Dreamweaver, ridiculously, spoke to me. I was asking, praying, that the Dreamweaver would help me make it through the night. I really just wanted to fly away to the bright side of the moon. I just wanted to leave this world behind. It was very painful to me in life at that time. For two months, I revelled in that song. And as I was pulling out of my depression, Love is Alive lifted me out of pain into ultimate joy. God only knows how much these two song mean to me to this day. One soothing to me in a time of death. The other pulling me out of death into rebirth, and moving on with my life. Thank You Gary. Oh, and did I mention, the rest of the album is great too, a watermark. Although smaltzy by today's standards, I believe a cover version with reworking of the arrangement could update these two great and awesome pop singles. Maybe I'm sentimental. Maybe I could be a genius like Gary too.

5 out of 5 stars THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, GARY.......2005-08-18

"DREAM WEAVER" was the first album I ever bought back in the spring of 1976.

I was all of 12 years old, and rumour had it that the town hottie (a precocious 14-year-old, hourglass-shaped knockout looking every bit like a Penthouse pet-of-the-month) apparently had a crush on me, which I refused to believe.

Fast-forward to the pre-March break school dance. As a swirling mirror ball reflected a kaleidoscope of fragmented light across a darkened gymnasium, the synthesizer intro of Dream Weaver swooshed from the speakers. There she was, bold and brassy, coming straight at me across a crowded room. Would I care to dance with her? She didn't give a damn that I had half a dozen buddies with me, all staring wide-eyed at this perfect specimen of the female form. This chick had moxy.

She pulled me tightly against her DD chest and whispered in my ear that she liked me... a lot. We're talking sensory overload: my face was nuzzled in her hair, with the scent of gee-your-hair-smells-terrific shampoo, bubblegum lipstick, and drugstore perfume totally intoxicating my impressionable young mind... while the chorus of Dream Weaver seared into my brain for all of eternity as I experienced my first French kiss. Schwing!

Perhaps a biased opinion in light of the above, but Dream Weaver gets my vote for greatest rock ballad of all time. The album is nothing short of amazing, and was light years ahead of its time when released in 1975. Other than the title track, Love Is Alive and Power Of Love are absolutely mesmerizing. A highly recommended album that deserves to be remastered along with Gary's follow-up, The Light Of Smiles and 1981's The Right Place.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Collection!.......2006-05-03

Gary Wright was born in New Jersey, but he started recording in 1967 and then moved on to work with "Spooky Tooth". In 1970 he was one of many upcoming talents that helped with George Harrison's keyboards on his famous 3-LP, "All Things Must Pass". Now this collection gathers the best from his studio recordings from 1971 to 1998. Its mostly a seventies sound with blockbusters like, Love Is Alive" and "Dreamweaver", but other songs like "Touch And Gone" are thrillers. Along with those, he manages some good heart-breaking ballads, such as, "Someone Like You". The songwriting, instrumentals and vocals are all top notch and this is really the best collection available with great liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Expected.......2005-11-24

I bought this CD for "Dream Weaver" and "Love is Alive". In addition to adding these mid-70s cruising-in-the-car favorites to my collection, I now have a much greater appreciation for Gary Wright's entire career. Everything on the disc is of the highest quality - no filler at all. It's an excellent buy.

5 out of 5 stars Good Collection of Gary Wright's Career.......2004-12-01

This cd really thoroughly covers the highlights of Gary Wright's musical career from the the Spooky Tooth and Wonder Wheel days through his huge solo successes of the 70's all the way to the present. All his hits are here Dream Weaver,Love Is Alive,I Really Wanna Know You,Two Faced man, etc. It's worth buying since most of Gary Wright's solo cds are out of print in the USA.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond Dream Weaver.......2004-01-05

Gary Wright is one of 70's greatest songwiters that had worked with a number of great talents before their glorious 80s days including Mick Jones(Foreigner) and Steve Winwood during Spooky Tooth times. He is also known as the trendsetter in keyboard/synth featured techno pop. So this compilation which came out in 1998 is sort of unknown treasures of 70s that finally see the light of day.

GET ON THE RIGHT ROAD and I KNOW A PLACE really rock somewhat Three Dog Night styled. STAND FOR OUR RIGHTS is one of my favorites other than huge hits such as DREAMWEAVER and LOVE IS ALIVE. KEEP LOVE IN YOUR SOUL featuring Steve Lukather as guitar solo is something like TOTO material while ARE YOU WEEPING is Steve Winwood trademark style.

Highly recommended if you like 70s mainstream American Pop.

5 out of 5 stars The founder of Techno Rock before tech become popular.........2003-08-13

Gary Wright was born early in the sense the time he experienced wasnt acknowledged his talent in the way he really deserves it.
Gary is the perfect combination of musical skills, experimentation, melody sense, poetry and a lot of personal memories....every time I hear this CD a lot of personal remembrances come to my head.
Definitely the creation power of this song and music writer cant found more acknowledgement in his time...maybe for technical reasons or maybe because of other stars in the sky were shinning in those days......

5 out of 5 stars Decidedly his best, no contractually obligated filler........2007-01-31

If You want a one disc, clear, concise overview of what Gary Wright is capable of on a good day, this is the disc to buy. There are a few very minor omisssions, regrettably, as there is much more room on a single disc for a few more great GW songs. These were all released during the height of his creative recording powers. Much of these songs were ignored after the Dreamweaver album. Everyone expected DW II with Light of Smiles. Make no mistake, it's a great album, no let down, just a little too spiritual thematically for a mainstream audience. The Discofied overtones of Touch and Gone further alienated even his hard core audience. But then in 1979 he released exceptional, ultimately satisfying and listenable album, Headin' Home with the awesome ITOWBBYS and the not included here Follow Next To You, and very little filler otherwise. He followed this by his by best solo recording ever, The Right Place, the rightful successor to The Dreamweaver, and in every way its equal. Full of rock, funk, and synthesized jazz and orchestral workouts. It even spawned 2 great early MTV videos for Heartbeat and IRWKY. Pitiably, by 1982, his progressive rock image was not suitable for the burgeoning viewing audience, about 6 months prior, and about to be hit with the third wave of British Invasion bands. These songs come from those 5 great albums and arguably are the best one-disc selection, albeit with a few omissions. Get this Disc as an introduction to a great and visionary artist. And then delve, one by one, into the full length albums. I recommend Dreamweaver and Right Place first, then Light of Smiles, Headin' Home and Touch and Gone in that order. They are very hard to get on CD, and highly collectible, at least until Gary and his label decide to release another run of them.

    5 out of 5 stars A great vibe, a great group.......2004-12-23

Dream Weaver was the debut recording of the classic Charles Lloyd quartet, a group that made some nice albums and achieved major crossover success in the late 60s but today is remembered primarily for launching the careers of Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. Dream Weaver reminds us that while all four musicians (the great Cecil Mcbee rounds out the group on bass) had great things ahead of them in 1966, they were perfectly capable of making excellent music even back then.

Dream Weaver draws comfortably from the entire spectrum of jazz in 1966 -- post-bebop, free jazz, soul jazz, and even some nascent jazz-rock. The quartet swings like crazy on "Autumn Leaves", which Lloyd bookends with two impressionistic collective improvisations. Lloyd's solo on "Leaves" reminds us what a great flute player he is, DeJohnette's brushwork is impeccable, and Jarrett's solo is one of his finest from the period. The title track opens with the Coltraneish "Meditation" before locking into a chunky groove on "Dervish Dance". "Bird Flight", a fast-paced post-bop tune, showcases Lloyd's fondness for intense tenor-drum duets as well as some ripping avant-garde playing by Jarrett. "Love Ship" is a ballad and "Sombrero Sam" rides a funky, dancing boogaloo groove.

I haven't heard all of this group's albums, but I'd put this one ahead of Soundtrack, Love-In and even the enormously popular Forest Flower. Lloyd's playing, which is occasionally erratic on the quartet's albums, is quite strong and fiery here. He also plays a lot of flute. Those used to the more laid-back, introspective ECM albums Lloyd has recorded since the late 80s might be pleasantly surprised.

Until this CD, the only in-print evidence of saxophonist-flutist Charles Lloyd's remarkably successful string of late-'60s albums has been Forest Flower, the 1966 live recording from the Monterey Jazz Festival. But that has thankfully changed with the release by 32 Jazz of Just Before Sunrise, which bundles together two long out-of-print albums from that period, Dream Weaver from 1966 and Love In from 1967. Featuring pianist Keith Jarrett and drummer Jack DeJohnette, with bassists Cecil McBee on Dream Weaver and Ron McClure on Love In, the two albums give a fuller picture of what was undoubtedly one of jazz's most remarkable ensembles. Lloyd's playing was so impassioned and direct it isn't hard to see why many critics at the time pegged him as the next Coltrane. His beautiful flute work on Dream Weaver's "Autumn Sequence" (which adds intro and outro passages to the classic "Autumn Leaves") is one of the best examples of jazz flute available, and his tenor playing on the disc's two-part title track and the uptempo ode to Charlie Parker, "Bird Flight," is searing. But it was the quartet's explosive group interaction (largely due to the incredible DeJohnette) that became its trademark. Dream Weaver in particular is a case study in sensitive group improvisation, with the Quartet's hard-bop leanings balanced by an expansive freedom more akin to Miles Davis's quintet of the same period and to the classic John Coltrane Quartet. Love In (recorded live at the Fillmore) shows more evidence of the group's crossover status, with a lifeless version of the Beatles' "Here, There and Everywhere" sounding like a token gesture. But both albums are remarkable in that they were embraced by a pop audience and yet, decades later, still sound so raw and uncompromising. --Ezra Gale

A welcome re-issue for two albums from the group that are supposed to have turned the Grateful Dead on to jazz.In some ways a strange pairing,"Dream Weaver" being the quartets first Atlantic recording, and "Love In" a live recording of a different line-up. However three of the four in the band remain constant and its clear to see why Lloyd, Keith Jarrett and Jack de Johnette were so highly regarded.Jarrett in particular sprays the albums with amazing piano phrases and DeJohnette was equally inventive on drums. Many of the tracks from "Dream Weaver" have been available on Atlantic samplers, but it's an album that demands to be heard in full. "Love In" contains more extended moments, particularly "Memphis Dues again/Island Blue". It also features what was a regular part of their live act, a Beatles tune, in this case "Here there and everywhere". What is evident in the pairing is the enormous energy and enthusiasm that drove the band into extended experimentation, and made them so popular. If you're coming to these albums from Lloyd's more recent ECM albums you may find it rather frenetic, but for all us old hippies "it's good to have the both of you back"

4 out of 5 stars Strong Cover and Too Many Mixes.......1999-09-13

If you liked Erin's version of THE FLAME get ready to love her new version of the rock classic DREAM WEAVER. There are ten remixes of the song on this CD, which seems a little excessive since none of them differ dramatically enough from each other that we NEED all of them. Still, it's a very nice song and a great dance tune.

5 out of 5 stars I have seen her perform.......2005-02-11

I've seen Erin Hamilton a number of times. I live in LA as does Erin Hamilton. I've seen her perform live at LA Gay Pride 98', Long Beach Gay Pride 99', Circuit Party New Year 99' in San Francisco. And of course i've seen her at the White Party 99' and a few times at gay LA clubs. She is a great performer and a good vocalist. All of her single releases DreamWeaver & The Flame are great dance club anthems. Her 3rd release The Temple isn't as good. But hey, she's a human being and we can't always be up to par. [...]

5 out of 5 stars one of the best in my collection!.......2002-02-28

even if you wern't crazy about the original (DREAM WEAVER) you'll love this cd! erin hamilton gives you 10 versions of this song to choose from, it's a great dance and party cd!

5 out of 5 stars Erin weaves a wonderful web!.......2000-02-15

Erin Hamiltion (Carol Burnett's daughter, for those not in the know) doesn't so much remake this song as recreate, revitalize, and reenergize it, making it into an instant dancefloor classic. I bought Erin's CD "One World" after hearing this song off the "Trick" soundtrack, and found that EVERY song packs the same powerful punch as "Dream Weaver." You won't be disappointed.

        5 out of 5 stars Erin Hamilton's vocals are a standout..........2000-02-10

Who could possibly remake the classic "Dream Weaver"? Answer: Erin Hamilton! She delivers a version that doesn't so much remake "Dream Weaver" as reinvent "Dream Weaver." This is an instant club classic that deserves to be heard outside of the clubs, and stands up to any of Whitney Houston's "remixed" versions off her latest album (the only versions, by the way, that received any radio play were her "remixes"...but that's another story!)... This single is not a fluke - the entire album is extraordinary. If you can find it, buy it.

5 out of 5 stars I love Erin Hamilton! This is a great remix of a classic.......1999-06-28

Erin Hamilton has outdone the classic song "Dream Weaver" taking Gary Hamilton's classic song and making is a sexy and sensual song full of energy and emotion!

Love all your music Erin!!! Call me!
