Panama City's Central Avenue--the major street in pianist Danilo Perez's hometown, with its Hispanic, Middle Eastern, West Indian and American population--provides the perfect multicultural metaphor for this amazing recording, which also includes drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts; bassists John Benitez and John Patitucci; tabla player Ray Spiegel; vocalist Luciana Souza; and percussionists Pernell Saturnino and Miguel "Anga" Diaz.

With his Afro-American/classically-trained pianisms, Perez does what his mentor, Dizzy Gillespie, did: He uses jazz and Afro-Latin rhythms to explore the world. He moves from the east Indian/Arabic tinges of "Blues for the Saints" and "Impromptu (Conversations)"; to the sly, Argentine/Afro-Amerindian chacarera rhythms on Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life"; and lands on the Cuban shore to the ancestral anthems of the guaguanco/abakua ritual drumming on John Coltrane's "Impressions," with Sousa's airy, wordless vocals.

Perez's love of Thelonious Monk is most evident on the slow, stealth-like melody of "Love in Five." On "Panama Blues," he swings an inventive jazz arrangement on an old folk melody rendered by Panamanian country singer Raul Vital, with Aquiles Baez on the cuatro; this arrangement showcases this pianist's ever-expanding and boundary- busting imagination. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

The Los Angeles Times
The new disc's title, the name of a culturally mixed thoroughfare in Panama City, hints at the wider, world-and-roots-music rhythms that grace such originals as "Impromptu (Conversations)" with its mix of tabla and congas.

3 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2006-06-03

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

1 out of 5 stars A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

He does it again another awesome cd even better then his 96 rel. & his then & now after this one he just keeps getting better & better. He,s right up there with some of the best pianoest of our time David Benoit. Bob James, Jim Brickman & others. So buy theses cds mentioned & his 96 rel. to. George

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets.......2000-05-06

This guy is one of the great artists of our day, and this CD is off-the-meter. The song Panama Blue is one of the great cuts of music ever. The last song combines folkloric with jazz combo beautifully.

2 out of 5 stars The Same Album....Again.......2000-01-30

This sounds like every other latin pianists coming out now. Nothing special. His close harmonies do nothing except annoy.

5 out of 5 stars A Winner!.......1999-06-24

This album is wonderful, this is his best album yet every jazz lover should get a copy.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best latin jazz album of the year........1999-02-05

This album incorporates modern jazz sound with a wonderful latin beat. It is truly a well deserved grammy nominee for 1999.

If you only own one JUMP BLUES cd it should be this. All this music was recorded in the sleasiest part of downtown Watts in a basement studio. And this music swing, were talking boogie woogie piano playing, honking, squeeking, and wailing alto saxaphones and marvelous vocals. Some of these combo bands went on to fame in L.A. like the Thre Blazers and Floyd Dixon. One of the best songs on here is " all the songs are perfect for swing dancing, jitterbugging, lindy hopping... This cd wil lappeal also to rockabilyl fans. this is small combo jump blues R&B at it's best! All of these sides were fro ma small label in Watts called COMBO!! soem rare and HOT stuff!

Throughout the history of jazz, mythical places like New Orleans's Storyville, Chicago's South Side, Kansas City's Tenderloin district, and New York's Harlem and 52nd Street were celebrated as the legendary hotspots. Thankfully, this impressive four-CD, 91-track collection featuring Nat "King" Cole, Louis Armstrong, and Benny Carter to name a few, puts Los Angeles's famous African-American enclave, Central Avenue, on the historical map and offers the listener a zoot-suited, jitterbugged jaunt through Club Alabam, The Downbeat, and other jumpin' joints where Hollywood stars rubbed shoulders with hep cats under a pulsating Pacific sky. The set covers an important period in the development of African-American music, from the conclusion of World War I to the birth of rock & roll: from the early New Orleans bouncy brass-band sounds of "Get Out of Here" by Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band and the Spanish-tinged, habanera syncopation on "Mamanita," courtesy of the pioneering pianist/composer Jelly Roll Morton to Lionel Hampton's boogie-woogie anthem "Flying Home" and the killer keyboard calisthenics on Art Tatum's "Tiger Rag." The Charlie Parker Septet's "Ornithology" blew into town on the wings of bebop innovation and hypnotized local up-and-comers like bassist Charles Mingus--under the moniker of Baron Mingus & His Octet on a rare side called "Bedspread"--and tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon's raw-boned tone on "Chromatic Aberration," which previewed John Coltrane's sheets of sound. Miles Davis's cool indigo-impressionism radiance on "Up in Dodo's Room," performed by the Howard McGhee Sextet, contrasts with the harmonic heights reached by the Gerald Wilson Orchestra's reading of "Groovin' High." There is a remarkable fluidity of transition from blues to R&B, as heard in the western wails on "Blues on Central Avenue" by Joe Turner with the Freddie Slack Trio, Nellie Lutcher's hip-bopping, tasty, and teasing "Fine Brown Frame" and the Texas-bred, guitar twang of T-Bone Walker's "Call It Stormy Monday," all of which highlight the sepia-toned, soulful syncretism that formed the bedrock of modern music and the marvelous black neighborhood that provided the foundation for it. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, historical jazz collection!.......2000-09-07

Central Avenue Sounds is more than a compendium of Los Angeles-based jazz from the 1920s-1960s. It's an historical documentation of an age and cultural environment that is sadly long gone and nearly forgotten. Although it stands on its own as an outstanding collection, buy this set with the book of the same title--"Central Avenue Sounds" edited by Clora Bryant (available here at Amazon)--for a multimedia journey back to a unique time and place. Highest recommendations!

3 out of 5 stars Great performer, but a disappointing disc.......2007-03-17

As a pianist, I love boogie woogie, and certainly Pete Johnson was a master. However, whoever compiled this CD did listeners a disservice by including 3 or 4 variations of the same song (Hollywood Boogie). I don't have the CD at hand now, so I can't be specific, but I believe this disc was well under an hour. Personally, I feel ripped off.

Great tunes! The sound quality is actually very good considering what the original recordings probably sounded like. If you're looking for some good 40's blues with solid blues piano chops, check this cd out.

4 out of 5 stars Live 1989 hard-bop session has many good moments.......2003-10-09

Recorded live at Kimball's East in Emeryville, CA on May 26-27, 1989, fluegelhornist Art Farmer and saxophonist Frank Morgan are both in good form on this live quintet session. There are rewarding solos by the principal performers and pianist Lou Levy. Eric Von Essen on bass and Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums provide solid rhythmic support, and get in a couple licks of their own. This release offers a well-balanced set of nine tracks from the concerts, delivering extended versions of Art's own "Farmer's Market", Sonny Clark's "Blue Minor" & "Cool Struttin'", Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee", and the standards "Star Eyes", "Embraceable You", "Don't Blame Me", and "I Remember You", each ranging from almost six minutes to over nine minutes in length.
