You'd imagine that one of America's first jazz musicians born in Vietnam would have a different sound and concept, and Cuong Vu fulfils that expectation. What's more, this trumpeter really wanted to play sax, as his dad did, but his mom mixed up the words for horn--yet he stuck with it! Vu brings on his jazz journey a bit of punk, rock, romantic Miles-ian wah-wah, and wisps of Charles Ives. ("The Burn" fires your imagination like "Fourth of July" and "The Unanswered Question.") On most of the rather melodic (if angular) tracks, Vu floats over Jamie Saft's buzzing piano and spacey keyboards, Stomu Takeishi's electric bass, and Jim Black's savvy kit. Yet Vu can also sting, as on "Two" and "Still Ragged," and he works fat, nasty growls into "The Drift." Most trumpeters begin singing at some career point, if only as a respite for the chops, but Vu strikes early on the title track, wafting his dreamy tenor in a legato love croon à la Chet Baker over the band's hard-sock. Bound veers into new realms of improvisation, and the pacing is fluid and colorful. Nice attention to details starts with Black's rockin' rimshots and pastel shading with tingling bell-tree and mallet-caressed cymbals. Listen to Vu, and watch for him. --Fred Bouchard

Beautiful!.......2007-04-24
I've owned this CD for several years now, and it definitely remains on my short, short list of favorites! The music is beautiful and contemplative, drawing the listener into the journey of migration undertaken by the birds who inspired it. Everything is amazing on it: the writing, the instrumentation, the vocals. This albumn is definitely not just for fans of the movie, but for anyone who loves slow, calming, thoughtful music.
Winged Migration CD.......2007-02-08
Awesome, for the most part- best after watching the documentary. A couple of songs had to skip through, but the rest is a good post movie mental review- watch the movie first...
Beautiful Soundtrack.......2007-01-06
I loved this movie and the soundtrack makes it ever better. I havent bought a CD in a while and this one is reasonably priced and rare.
WINGED MIGRATION.......2006-08-29
The movie is excellent. The scenery is breathtaking, but you actually feel like you are flying with the geese. Geese are amazing birds. A must see.
THE RIGHT MUSIC FOR THE RIGHT MOVIE.......2006-06-22
Even if you haven't seen the beautiful french documentary, you'll love this soundtrack. The score captivates listeners from the very beginning and the song "To Be By Your Side" by Nick Cave gives the very special mood that the movie requires. Bruno Coulais is the same composer from HIMALAYA, thus you may understand better the sort of music you're listening: half ethnic, half new age and totally haunting. Don't miss it.

A New Day To Be Born.......2007-02-18
After buying "American Myth," I backtracked to "Sweet Somewhere Bound," Jackie Greene's previous set. I like the largely acoustic folk feel of his music and particularly enjoy his playfulness and humor. Of my two favorite tracks, "Honey I Been Thinking About You" is a churning toe tapper with a catchy melody, "I don't really care about the weather outside & I don't want to talk about national pride; All that I need for to be satisfied is a woman who's nothing like me." The title track also has an amazingly memorable melody with Greene's gentle vocals bouncing reflectively between sadness and hope, "Where will you go when the sun goes sinking? Morning brings a new day to be born." Other tracks like the opening boogie "Cell Block #9" & the haunting "Miss Madeleine (3 Ways to Love Her)" are also excellent. This is a strong offering from this promising songwriter & vocalist. Enjoy!
IT'S ALL IN THE STARS.......2006-05-16
good side:lyrically brilliant, musically captivating, wonderful vocal deliveries
bad side:again, can't find anything too bad to say about this!
standout tracks:honey i've been thinking about you; sweet somewhere bound; everything to me; a thing called rain; seven jealous sisters; miss madeline (3 ways to love her)
Lame-O.......2005-11-22
I saw Jackie open for Susan Tedeschi a week ago and for the first two songs I was impressed by how talented this guy is. He can play everything and he can play everything very well. He has a great voice with great control, but he's got no soul. The music is very cheesy and predictable. After a few songs, which all start sounding the same, I was so bored that I was regretting buying the tickets to see Susan. I acutally felt sorry for the musicians that he hires because there's no way anyone that I know would want to play this without getting some $$.
Thankfully Susan came out and kicked ass and made me completely forget about this guy. When I was leaving someone was talking about how his recordings were great so I checked out this disc to give him one more try, but it's just safe poppy middle of the road music. It's just like Coldplay, Eric Clapton, or even Hootie and the Blowfish...safe radio friendly music. Jackie please stay away from the blues because you just don't have it in you.
Jackie Greene continues to evolve... and impress.......2005-10-13
Jackie's country, gospel and blues influenced folk music continues to evolve here on "Sweet Somewhere Bound", and he produces his best album in his first attempt under his new label, Verve. Jackie's previous album, "Gone Wanderin'", showed promise and had good individual songs, but meshed together badly as an album and suffered from repetition in places.
This album suffers none of these issues. Jackie provides us with 13 tracks on "Sweet Somewhere Bound", all of them listenable and all of them exploring different emotional territory for both Jackie and his listeners.
Jackie is apt in making his listeners both laugh and smile; the album opens with the songs "About Cell Block No. 9" and "Honey, I've Been Thinking About You", both upbeat and cheerful songs that you'll be hard-pressed to dislike.
"Honey, I've Been Thinking About You" is a good benchmark for Jackie; if you're considering getting into his music, listen to this song off his Myspace site or from the samples here on Amazon, as I consider it one of his best and clearly one of the star tracks of the album. Jackie croons about simple love beyond the details of life, and even makes us laugh a bit with lines such as:
Now, I don't really care about your hot-blooded sister
I'm sure there's a man for to love her and miss her
I didn't mean nothing, I just happened to kiss her
But honey I was thinking about you
As talented as Jackie is at making us smile, he's equally gifted with bringing tears to our eyes. Tracks such as "Emily's In Heaven", that lament the loss of a loved one, and "Write A Letter Home", that exhibits the very definition of being lonesome only prove that Jackie's talent isn't prohibited to cheer alone:
Eleven different doctors and not one had a clue
They rushed her to emergency, but there was nothing they could do
They said she had a weak heart, she'd always been that way
I said she just gave too much of it away
Now Emily's in Heaven, and I'm awake in bed
Sometimes how I wish, the Good Lord took me instead
But I guess the good die young and life just isn't fair
But Emily's in Heaven she'll be waiting for me there
Some tracks are better than others, but all 13 tracks provide the listener with something new. There's no filler; if you skip the end of the album, you'll only miss out on some of the best songs on the album in "Write A Letter Home" and "Everything to Me". Jackie Greene doesn't try anything particularly unique or groundbreaking on "Sweet Somewhere Bound", as his greatest strength lies in the simplicity of his music. These aren't complicated songs. Instead, Jackie exhibits a variety of emotions as he does what he excels at; making great, listenable music that's simple to understand and invariably gets your foot tapping.
Jackie doesn't try for anything particularly new or different because he doesn't have to; riffs from his blues guitar or notes from his harmonica speak volumes more than many songs. Every song, every note, is packed with emotion and rarely fails to pull you into the stories he tells.
Jackie Greene has surfaced in Sacramento as one of the most entertaining and exciting artists in the area, and I'm personally looking forward to seeing him continue to evolve and emerge. I highly recommend him to any fan of folk, country, blues or heck, music in general. You'll love this guy.
aaaahhhhh!.......2005-09-08
he makes you happy.....that's the bottom line. he is fun, but not silly........the album is, well, "music to my ears". kind of folksy, rock minestrone soup. this is what an album should be, to be able to hook you the very first time you listen before you know any of the words or even what the hell he's singing about. near perfection!

Perfect starter CD!.......2005-02-12
I'm surprised that no one has reviewed this CD yet. Released in conjuction with the Nationally-released PBS documentary "America's Choir" - this album is a perfect starting place for people who wish to have a sampler of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Serving as both a latter-day "greatest hits" and a stand alone album, this CD gathers six tracks from the Choir's recently released albums "Consider The Lilies," "Spirit Of America" and "Peace Like A River" and adds TEN brand new tracks recorded specially for this project, creating a perfect sampler of both the Choir's magnificent history and it's current sound. It highlights the strengths of the Choir's repetoire, from well-known hymns ("Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing") to patriotic standards ("Battle Hymn Of The Republic") to folk songs ("Shenandoah," "Bound For The Promised Land") and even some surprises, like the traditional Welsh anthem "O Home Beloved" and the "Fugue In C Major (Jig)" for organ and orchestra. A wonderful, wonderful CD, with startling changes in mood and tempo, but with the unifying artistry of the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Sqare.

This collection goes far beyond a simple career retrospective, with over 30 new songs (from Tom Waits's own versions of songs he gave to other artists, to pieces recorded in the garage with his kids). Also includes Tom's unique interpretations of songs by such diverse talents as the Ramones, Daniel Johnston, Kurt Weill & Bertolt Brecht, and Leadbelly. Each CD is sub-titled--"Brawlers," "Bawlers," and "Bastards"--to capture the full spectrum of Waits's ranging and roving musical styles. "Brawlers" is chock full of raucous blues and full-throated juke-joint stomp, "Bawlers" contains Celtic and country ballads, waltzes, lullabies, piano, and classic Waits songs, while "Bastards" is filled with experimental music, stories, and jokes. The limited edition deluxe package contains a bound 94-page booklet that reproduces Tom's lyrics in the style of a volume of old poetry, with 20 pages of never-before-seen photos.

Customer Reviews:
Quantity over quality.......2007-05-20
A bit disappointing. As usual with Tom Waits, some of the tracks are great -- Lucinda and Goodnight Irene are standouts. But too many, while not bad, are kinda ho-hum. With editing, this would have made a better 2-disc set, or a really good single CD.
i assume 5 stars is appropriate.......2007-05-10
I bought this CD a couple of weeks ago, but haven't heard it. My husband immediately took it from me & hasn't given it back. "Oh, I keep forgetting it at work." He said it's great. Based on that & the other reviews, I'm giving it a 5 star rating anyway. :)
I plan on getting it by this weekend or going out to buy my own copy.
Absolute Favorite Singer!.......2007-05-04
I bought this the second I found out it was available for my husband who is a HUGE Waits fan. A gotta have!
It's Tom Waits, and therefore excellent.......2007-04-06
Nobody does grizzled and world-weary quite like Tom Waits, and coming off 2004's incredible Real Gone, the mammoth three-disc collection Orphans is yet more proof of his bizarre genius. Even putting aside the abundance of great music it contains, it is, if nothing else, a fitting tribute to Waits's persistently uncommercial, marketing-be-damned approach to his music. Comprised of a whopping 54 songs (both Waits originals and covers) and clocking in at about three hours, Orphans is vintage Waits from beginning to end-unvarnished, unconventional, and uncompromising. Given the enormous amount of variety to be found here, everyone's going to have their personal favorites, but whichever tracks one prefers there's no denying that Orphans makes the perfect testament to Waits's endless creativity, stinging wit and gritty, PhD-in-life sensibility.
Waits has long been a a man of many personas-demented carnival barker, old testament prophet, Jesus freak, depression-era bluesman-and even more than his more traditional albums Orphans shows off his chameleonic nature to the fullest extent. With its ample available space, Orphans allows Waits to induldge in genre exercises ranging from rockabilly (Lie To Me); to baroque pop (Little Drop of Poison); to swamp blues (Buzz Fledderjohn); to gospel (Lord I've been changed) without ever sounding like just an imitator of his varied influences. That said, Waits is still at his best when he dwells in a musical territory all his own, be it noisy, free-form experimentation or more reflective, sparsely instrumented balladry.
Each disc brings with its own unique feel, with the first one feeling the most like a proper Waits album in the vein of such all-encompassing classics as Rain Dogs and Bone Machine. Waits gets his classic-rock fix taken are of early with the scorching Low Down, whose big, brash guitar riffs wouldn't sound out of place in the '60's. The clamorous percussion and dizzying time signatures of Fish in the Jailhouse should please fans of Waits's more eccentric side, or just those like this writer who crave something abrasive and weird. Providing a sharp contrast to these tunes, but still very much in line with Waits's overall approach, are the downcast resignation of the bluesy, guitar-driven Road to Piece (a seven-minute examination of the conflict in Israel) and the closing lament of Rains on Me.
The ballad-heavy second disc, while occasionally a tad forgettable, is still home to some of the most brilliant material of Waits's career. The triumphant Take Care of All of My Children is driven by a stirring, martial drum beat, while the following Down There by the Train manages to expertly combine sadness, regret, and hope through Waits's singularly poetic lyrical imagery ("There's no eye for an eye/There's no tooth for a tooth/I saw Judas Iscariot carryin' John Wilkes Booth"-brilliant). In somewhat of a curveball for Waits, Never Let Go is inspiring and poignant in its straightforward message of devotion. There's also a great, booze-sodden lament in Goodnight Irene, which finds Waits's nicotine-stained voice at its most raw and unhinged.
The third disc is a nod to every side of the schizophrenic last two decades of Waits's career, with unstructured noise explorations (the mutant jazz-blues-rock workout Heigh Ho is hard-edged and ominous even for Waits) to a slew of spoken-word pieces to some more tender ballads. Waits starts off the disc by breaking out his classic rasp on the delightfully malevolent What Keeps Mankind Alive, and backs himself up with some inspired vocal beat-boxing on the Spidey's Wild Ride and King Kong. The latter track is especially interesting, with Waits's pained wail augmented by some ear-piercing guitar squeals and a subterranean bass line as he declaims the tragic story of, well, King Kong, with all the gravity of a character delivering the closing monologue of a Shakespearean tragedy.
Why did I wait so long before buying this CD?.......2007-03-24
I've been aware of Tom Waits for many years and have purchased a few of his more popular songs online. However, this is the first album of his that I've bought. My criteria for album purchases is that the album price must be competitive with the sum of the download prices for all the songs that appeal to me when reviewing samples. I was not disappointed and will likely go back and buy some of his older albums.
For me, 4 stars is about as good as it gets because I reserve the 5 for perfection. The biggest negative for me was the lack of lyrics in the the lower cost edition.

There are few music fans who are not familiar with a Tom Paxton song--whether they know it or not. Paxton emerged from the folk movement of the 1960s and went on to pen a remarkable body of work that has been covered by literally hundreds of singers. Indeed, the songs on this collection, culled from the seven albums he cut from his start on through 1971, include what are now unarguably American standards in the rarefied tradition of Stephen Foster and Woody Guthrie. His lyrical charm and simplicity of melody informs children's songs ("Going to the Zoo," "Marvelous Toy") and hilarious social satires ("What Did You Learn in School Today," "Forest Lawn"). His most memorable songs, though, are the romantic ballads such as the title track, "Ramblin' Boy," and his signature apologia "The Last Thing on My Mind." This album is a perfect Paxton primer, the only quibble being over the songs left off. The breadth of Paxton's early work surely merits a double CD. --John Sutton-Smith
Customer Reviews:
ONE GREAT FOLK ARTIST.......2007-05-22
I was in high school during the VietNam unrest and got into protest music at that time-but the only record by Tom Paxton that I enjoyed was Mysterious Toy. Ater all these years I forgot about him and while shopping in a card shop I heard a childs song-I Have Yo Yo and recognized the artist. From that shopping trip it brought me to Amazon and this great CD by Tom with his vast array of various songs. A truly great artist.Buy it-listen to it- and go back in time whether good or bad.
Great Album.......2007-04-11
Listening to Tom Paxton is like a time machine back into the turmoil and frustration of the sixties. This album shows why Paxton is one of the principle movers of the resistance to the war in Vietnam. Some of the songs make you want to cry they're so beautiful, but mostly the humor and good nature is what comes through. "The Vietnam Ragg" probably sums up most guy's attitudes towards the draft most perfectly. We lost a lot in this country when folk music fell out of favor. Men like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seger, Jack Elliott, Hoyt Axton and Tom Paxton came from the soil and blood that built this nation before the days of consumerism and conspicuous consumption and I hope they're never forgotten.
The Best of Tom Paxton.......2007-02-13
Whilst in the R.A.F.I used to play Tom's L.P's on the camp's radio station. The records got lost over time and the C.D.is a great way of replacing them and bringing back memories of when I met my wife.Tom's music is simple & efective when modern 'folk' albums tend to be over produced.
unmatched.......2005-04-05
Tom is the greatest folk song writer of our era...this collection totally won me over to his politics and motivated me to travel to Hazard, Kentucky in the summer of 1970 to see what Tom was singing about...we met some hippies who turned us on to some moonshine and we watched as the town clock went around for 8 hours...Tom actually devoted a rendition of the song, High Sheriff of Hazard" to me and a friend at a concert at Brooklyn College. Tom is the ultimate songwriter-storyteller. I love rap music now but its roots of protest where embedded in Tom's protest songs. Enjoy!
Excellent sampler-but need more.......2003-11-26
This is a long overdue release and contains some of the best performances from Tom Paxton during his early, formative years on the Elektra label. As others have stated, there are omissions in this collection-thus begging the question-when will these be released on cd?
Tracks like "Morning Again", "Crazy John", "Saturday Night" are only available by hunting down the original vinyl.
At the very least, "Tom Paxton 6", his best record, deserves a cd release. The tracks on this anthology from this record sound wonderful on cd.
Also deserving a cd release is his Reprise label record "Peace Will Come"- an album right up there with "Tom Paxton 6".

LOVE IN ANY LANGUAGE.......2006-12-26
I bought this CD for the song "Love Is Spoken Here" which was sung at my father's funeral, to celebrate his life and love of music, especially Church music. Our soloist was a friend whose voice warmed our breaking hearts. But when I saw that I could also get the Mormon Tabernacle Choir version along with many other beautiful American songs, I ordered this. I highly recommend MTC if you are seeking choir music to lift your spirit.

whiskey bent & hell bound.......2007-02-24
I real enjoyed listening to this cd. There wasnt one song that I didnt like. If you like hank williams jr. you will like this cd.
Pure Hank.......2005-08-02
This is pure Hank from the days when we all didn't have to worry about being politically correct. It's an oldie but a goodie.
Hank The Great.......2005-03-29
There ain't much to talk about if you'll talk about Hank. His sound is unique and matchless, and this album is one of his diamonds.Listening to this album I can almost see myself in a trashy bar sippin' from my glass of Old Jack. Yeeeowww!! Pure and outlaw country! just the way it should always be.
Great Album!!.......2004-06-10
This is where Hank really starts coming true to form as we know him today! Family tradition was a good album but this one is great! Filled with great hits, any Hank fan will truly appreciate this album which includes Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, O.D.'d in Denver, etc.
Vintage Hank from 1979.......2004-03-31
While Kenny Rogers (of whom I am also a huge fan) was dominating the commercial aspect of country music with songs such as The Gambler and She believes in me, Hank was doing things his way, just as he always has done since he left MGM, with his unique blend of country, rock and blues. Of course, plenty of others have blended these three, including Elvis in the fifties, but Hank's blend is very much his own.
On this album, the my favorite tracks (but not by much) are the title track, Women I've never had and a brilliant duet with Waylon Jennings, The conversation, about Hank's father. There's also a great revival of White lightning, which was written by the Big Bopper but provided George Jones with a top ten American pop hit. Hank's cover is very different from George's but I love them both. Hank also does an excellent cover of Gregg Allman's Come and go blues.
Considering that Hank never did things the Nashville way, it is perhaps surprising that he had as much success as he did - but the quality of his albums, including this one, ensure that he deserved all the success that he had.

Fine Wine Indeed.......2007-03-29
Some bands have musical chops ... but absolutely nothing to say. Some bands have great messages to convey ... but very little appeal in the way of idiomatic mastery. Supertramp, with or without this or that prominent member, has always had a lot to say and total mastery of every musical trick needed to get the point across! Extended sax solos, spoken word, moody guitarwork (from the master of moody guitarwork), keyboard tricks to soothe the beastliest of progressive rock beasts, and the ever-competent rhythm work that holds the whole thing together - check. Meaningful things to say that only become more meaningful with time - check. Dynamic tension - check. Short little pop gems - check. Extended chunks of progressive mastery - check. This album has it all ... and is tied with Crime of the Century as my favorite Supertramp disc.
Supertramp's best post-Hodgson effort 20 years later.......2005-11-29
Supertramp's Brother Where You Bound was released in May of 1985.
The album was the group's first without original member Roger Hodgson whom left the band in September of 1983. As a result, keyboardist and vocalist Rick Davies was the only original member from the first album left.
This album captures the now four-piece band at the start of a new era, led by Davies and rounded out by veteran members bass player Dougie Thomson, saxophonist and occasional keyboardist John Helliwell and drummer Bob Siebenberg with help on the first half by session guitarist Marty Walsh.
Bravely discarding the advice and obvious perferences of their critics, they created a masterpiece.
From track one, Supertramp grabs your attention with the gripping, lovelorn suite Cannonball which was a Top 30 hit peaking at #26. The track was a classic all in the key of G minor. From there, the band continues with Still in Love, which is kind of a sequel to 1982's My Kind of Lady. The mysteriously poignant No Inbetween is next and the first half ends with the optimistic Better Days. The former with its piano work and the latter with its driving beat.
The second half is dominated by the 16 and a half minute title track which is one of the band's most accomplished and intriguing songs. The track features ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorman(whom is also Bob Siebenberg's brother in law) on rhythm guitar and Pink Floyd's David Gilmour playing the searing guitar solos. The ending solo with Gilmour playing with Supertramp is worth purchasing the album alone. The album closes with the optimistic glimmers of Ever Open Door with just Rick and his keyboards(piano and synthesizer).
Unfortunately, the public turned its back after this promising set. Brother Where You Bound was Supertramp's last album to enter the top 40 peaking at #21 and going Gold but subsequent releases failed miserably. A hard price to pay for such great music as America went for style over substance! Supertramp's next great album after Brother was 2002's Slow Motion which is only available at their website but a great album nonetheless.
Highly recommended!
Best of the post - Hodgson era........2005-11-25
This is a fantastic disc. Sonically, it ranks up there with Floyd and Parsons. Coincidentally, David Gilmour makes an appearance on electric guitar - and what an appearance! Sorry, no roger from here on out, but for this disc (the first one w/out RH) anyway, he wasn't missed. Brother where you Bound (the song) is 16 minutes long and is an incredible example of truly progressive music. Especially considering the AOR infested period that this music was created during(1985).
A good reason why we need five stars.......2005-11-19
Brother where you bound is second favourite album from Supertramp after Breakfast in America. This album is a classic right from the first to the last track and is hugely recommended to all fans of good classic rock music.
