Customer Reviews:
The classic Maynard album.......2007-05-16
As this album influenced my jazz tastes through junior high and high school, and into college, I spent countless hours listening to these tunes. Through 30-plus years, I've worn out three of the original albums and at least six tapes before this CD was released. To sit with headphones on and listen to the live atmosphere from Jimmy's takes me to the days of live concerts where high school and collegiate jazzers would sit in awe of the Master's stratospheric work, and the interaction of the musicians. All of the charts are outstanding, including the classic McArthur Park. Nice and Juicy is a fun chart, the Fox Hunt just kicks and Got the Spirit is the perfect closing for a great set.
Perhaps the best words for this album were uttered by Maynard himself as the band played "Blue Birdland" at the conclusion of the album: "I hope we get one hell of an album out of this."
You surely did, Mr. Ferguson, you surely did.
Maynard Ferguson - Live at Jimmy's.......2007-05-12
This is Maynard's greatest live album and possibly his best album period.
Pilates4me.......2007-04-13
This is such an incredible cd. I feel it's one of his best. I've been waiting for a long time for it to be put on cd and so happy that it finally has been. Worth every penny! I listened to the record(aging myself!) growing up and could listen to this everyday for the rest of my life! Got the Spirit is a song that inspired me to play the sax! There's none better than it!
Finally!.......2007-04-11
My records (yeah, remember those?) were stored for a couple of decades, so I was thrilled to unpack them 2 years ago. The first ones out of the box were MF Horn 4&5. It was a fantastic experience and brought tears to my eyes, even through the crackles, pops and distortion caused by what was probably thousands of playings.
Going through my collection, I found this set was THE most worn out of ALL the MF recordings I had (Chameleon, MF2, etc) which says alot about the quality of the recording, the music selection and my preference for live vs studio.
I was really excited to learn this was coming out on CD so I could finally hear a clean version. After waiting an extra couple of weeks beyond the initial promised shipping date, then another 2 weeks of being away from home, I finally got my hands on it yesterday. Whoohooo! It played all day yesterday in my office and on the way home from work.
I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviews, that this is a recording for the ages and would even suggest that, from a layman's point of view, if you have room for 1 MF album, this is the one. He gives Teo Macera credit for recording it ON THE STREET IN A MOBILE VAN, for cryin' out loud, so the quality of the sound is even more amazing. This was no over-miked, multi-take recording with the applause superimposed, but a "you are there" snapshot of a master at work with one of the tightest and most talented bands he ever had backing him up.
I was fortunate to go to the tribute concert held after his death last year in St Louis where alumni from his band rotated through (soon to be on DVD- don't miss that one!). Many of the musicians on this album were there and THAT will be one I watch for.
In life, all we ultimately leave behind is our legacy and he left one of love, teaching and incredible but humble talent.
RIP Maynard, they broke the mold after they made you.
At last, this epic perfomance is on CD........2007-04-09
I wholeheartily concur with the other reviewers. This is Maynard Ferguson and his band at their best. After listening to the CD, I'm even more impressed with the recording quality of this live album. It is a better than most of the live jazz recordings made today -- more than thirty years
later.
I've had the original record since it came out when I was in high school.
Maynard and his band were a huge influence on my friends and me. Several
of my classmates went on to be professional horn players. For me, Maynard
helped spark a lifelong appreciation of jazz and particulary big bands.
Sidenote: What became of Bruce Johnston? I think his bari solos on this
recording are some of my favorites of all time.

Jefferson Airplane created the sounds of a generation. Their smash hits "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit" provided the soundtrack to the Summer of Love, virtually inventing the era's signature pulsating psychedelic music and personifying the decade's radical counterculture.
Customer Reviews:
Weep for a lost dreamworld!.......2007-04-20
Let's face it - we are never going to hear a sonically perfect version of this legendary recording. But this latest package is the best I have heard and is certainly clearer in sound than the Thunderbolt release (welcome as that was) from the early 90's. The concert is pitched between the Airplane's two most innovative albums 'Pillow' and 'Baxters' and features a band that was youthful, hungry and at a creative peak. 'Today' with its one off harpsichord-like arrangement, is especially haunting. RCA are continually releasing a seemingly endless series of recordings from the Fillmore East. These have merits of their own but to my ears at least, Jefferson Airplane were never as other worldly as they were at Monterey. Buy this album - and weep for a lost dreamworld!
Yet another re-issue of the same music.......2007-03-14
This music has been released several times under many different titles. It is about 36 minutes long and the sound quality fair to poor. It is better than most of the other performances by other groups released from the Monetery Pop Festival. It was recorded for a TV show and was never meant to be a high fidelity recording.
This set is also on the Monterey Pop Festival boxset.
The peformance is fairly good, but not the best of live Jefferson Airplane. With the mediocre sound quality, I would suggest getting many of the other live albums (except Miracle Live) before getting this one.
IDENTICAL to earlier release.......2007-01-29
Despite a reviewer's claim that this release has superior sound quality to the 1995 U.K. label Magnum release, to my ears they're identical. If you have the earlier release, you gain nothing by buying this. Great music, but don't buy this if you have the earlier release.
When they were good, they were very good........2007-01-29
Out of the dozens of shows I saw in the 60's and 70's, Jefferson Airplane was one of the best. Unfortuantely they were also one of the worst. This Monterey Festival set sounds like one of the best. Very nice sound quality. And although the order of songs is screwed up, I am really glad they left in some of the mistakes like eq'ing the microphones with rumbles and all. A couple of times the band appeared to be lost but Jack Cassady just kept going strong until the others caught up. "Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil" gives us a glimpse of where the band was heading. History has proved this a very important performance for the bands that were there-same for the Airplane. The four page booklet gives a general history of the band by Alfie Falckenbach (Records Collector) and a much shorter history of the Festival itself. Both are helpful.
Change track order to real performance order and bring back stage banter!.......2007-01-21
Audio quality is very good, however track orders are switched for this edition which causes some confusion when listening. For example the electric piano in "Today" can be heard before some tracks as Grace is preparing to play it, but then "White Rabbit" starts playing. If the tracks were left in the order they were played, this would be a stronger release. There are no fades either, which sounds quite choppy at times. I also dislike how they edited down the introduction group where Grace laughs, chosing to barrel into "Somebody to Love" instead. Until then, most of the material can be found on the Monterey International Pop Festival Boxed Set. Still, "The Ballad of You, and Me, and Pooneil" stands out as whats to come with After Bathing at Baxters later in the year.

Album Description
Pacific Gas & Electric was a blues/rock group out of California who had a number of charting albums in the late 1960's-early 1970's. The group was headed up by vocalist Charlie Allen. Wounded Bird proudly presents this previously unreleased live album from Charlie Allen and friends, originally scheduled for release by Columbia in 1970 but never saw the light of day - until now! The rumors of the existence of this album have been a topic of conversation by their fans for decades. The rumors can now be put to rest.

Bloozey Fun in1970.......2007-04-17
Well I had my reservations since there had been a major shake-up in their line up.A new drummer, bass, guitar and no horns????? Ken Utterback replacing Glenn Schwartz on lead?
An unfounded concern, as Ken more than holds his own, filling those really Big Shoes, he's a soulful player with more than a few licks highly reminiscent of one John Dawson Winter III sans the slide.
Now to the real critical part:
Everyone knows that a proper sound check is crucial especially if you plan on recording & releasing a show.
Well...apparently someone forgot to tell the parties involved because it takes until the 3rd song to get their levels right. This is a shame, as this band was legendary for it's live performances.
Track 1: aptly named Old Slop in "A" (11:20 min.) has a wonderful groove marred by a criminally crappy mix ( someone should have been fired for it). And unfortunately this poor quality carries over into their "big" hit track 2: "Are You Ready?" Charlie's vocals are still way out front, fortunately there is only 6:25 of this to endure.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love live recordings, even marginal ones by recording standards.
The problem here is by the third track someone must have slapped the sound board tech and woke him up. The mix improves dramatically.
Too bad it didn't happen sooner. 'Cause this is a really fine band that ( in this reviewers eyes and ears) fell victim of an indifferent or untalented sound crew.
The rest of this release sparkles, but I almost didn't make it past the first couple of tracks.I imagine the execs at CBS didn't make it past 'em either. Maybe that's why these terrific tracks(well tracks 3 thru 8 anyway) have sat on a shelf for 37 years.
All that said, this is still a real historic gem that tho tarnished is a valuable addition to anyone's collection who lived & loved the live sounds of the late 60's and early 70's.
Don't overanalyze it...........2007-04-12
The liner notes indicate this live date took place while touring after "Are You Ready" was released, but with a revised line-up. No "guitar
glen", who was replaced by a very good Ken Utterback, but it is still a worthwhile purchase. It is a crude, undoctored disc, but very enjoyable, over an hour of great guitar blues-rock. It is a bit over-indulgent at times, but who wasn't at the time(8-'70). Well worth the time and expense!

Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

Great CD.......2006-08-06
This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.
Simply the Best.......2005-06-29
First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.
In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.
In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.
If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.
Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21
I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.
"Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30
This review is by Crosley.
I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.
There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.
I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.
A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16
There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.
This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.
My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

live at newport.......2006-02-02
this cd represents herbie manns' talents at the height of his career. it is one of his most prolific works. the back-up musicians complement his style perfectly, making this one of his most enjoyable offerings.
From when bossa nova was, well, nova.......2001-12-01
This is one of my favorite bossa nova albums, from a time when that music was still fresh and exciting (complete with Herbie blowing a note or two). I too am glad it's back in print because I wore out my vinyl copy. Easily the best version of Desafinado ever. Jobim's other standard on this album, Girl from Ipanema, gets a nice treatment as well. The treatment of Soft Winds is intriguing because it's kind of a pre-Memphis Underground bossa nova bop. The same is true for Don't You Know, which is also funky before funk was invented. If you're choosing between this and the 1966 album, New Mann at Newport, choose this one. Or both.
I'm SO glad this is back in print!!!!.......2001-11-15
This is one of those albums that slipped through the cracks for years. Atlantic/Rhino's jazz re-issue department has been completely lax, with the exception of the Mingus/Coltrane/Ornette stuff, which they have every reason to be proud of. But in doing their best to get that stuff out, deserving albums by Eddie Harris and Herbie Mann have stayed out of print. Thank God for these smaller labels that are making everything available again!!! This album features some prime latin Herbie Mann, and the song Don't You Know has been a favorite for years. I have had access to the vinyl, but you can't play the vinyl in your car on the way to a gig, so I've always been kinda bummed that this one never saw the light of day. Until now! Wooo!! I'm so excited to see this one in print again!!

Customer Reviews:
Ron from Tarzana.......2006-06-27
Jesse Winchester is a great artist, and for his part, this is a great album. Unfortunately, the company reissuing this and other Winchester albums, Wounded Bird Records, did a horrible job of remastering it. The sound is much too bassy and flat, with virtually no treble at all. It needs to be run through an equalizer to listen to it. The CD deserves 5 stars for Winchester's part, and 1 for Wounded Bird's part, which is why I gave it only 3. I've emailed Jesse about it and he says: "I'm afraid I have no control and no influence over the companies who release those records. I was not consulted or even informed by Wounded Bird. I haven't the money for a law suit....I'm very sorry about this. I wish there were something concrete I could do, but due to my own naivite as a young man and the unscruplous people I was doing business with, I have no artistic or financial control whatever over those recordings. We live and learn."

Customer Reviews:
What a wonderful CD!.......2003-07-15
This really is a beautiful collection of music. "The Triumphs of Oriana" was published in 1601 by famous English composer Thomas Morley as a collection of songs honoring Queen Elizabeth (Oriana). 25 major English composers' songs are in here, except for William Byrd. The vocals are beautiful and really take the listener back to the golden age of European civilization. There are also several lute pieces inserted into the CD to add to the Renaissance feeling. This is an excellent CD!
The triumphs of I Fagiolini.......2002-08-25
The Triumphs of Oriana are a collection of polyphonic songs of the Elisabethian period published by Morley to honour Oriana (poetic nickname of Queen Elisabeth I). Therefore he collected songs composed by 25 wellknown English composers of his time (only William Byrd is missing) which all end with the words "Long life fair Oriana".
I already heard the Triumphs of Oriana sung by the King's Singers. This version by I Fagiolini sounds differently, as they are 7 men and 3 women instead of 6 men, but the result is very interesting: the female voices give indeed more brilliant to the sound.
Because this series was famous in its time among the amateurs, for private concerts, this CD includes various lute pieces in order to sound like an Elisabethian private concert.
Today, the listener has other standards and I don't find this idea is really good: it deforces the a cappella songs by a kind of intermezzo.
Anyway, the listener has yet the possibility to skip the lute pieces if he likes thanks to the miracle of the CD player.
In that case, the CD is really very good.
