5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2002-08-20

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

5 out of 5 stars An American Diary.......2000-03-28

This album by Vibist Mike Mainieri has an interesting blend of contemporary and traditional jazz sounds. The talents of such players as Joe Lovano on sax, Eddie Gomez on bass and Peter Erskine on Drums compliment Mainieri's vibe playing through this musical excursion of numerous American musical styles. I like this album because of Mainieri's choice of music, his modern approach towards Harmony and the freedom he has within a given form and also within free form jazz. "An American diary" is a complete encumbrance of the sonic boundaries known to mankind. The vibes create a mellow easy listening texture without loosing energy and making the listener fall asleep.

The City on Film had its humble beginnings in 1998 as the solo project for Robert Nanna during an extended break between tours. With a smoother, softer version of his previous work as lead singer/guitarist of Braid (Polyvinyl) and Hey Mercedes (Vagrant), Nanna has drawn comparisons to everyone from Elliott Smith and Bright Eyes to Jawbox and The Killers. American Diary, Nanna's second excursion under The City on Film handle, definitively proves Nanna's songwriting prowess as it melds infectious pop melody, dreamy introspection, and even a bit of country stomp.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2001-05-23

This is an excellent CD for those who are unfamiliar with Busoni's work. It presents a broad range of the composers work, from his excellent transcription of Bach's Organ Prelude & Fugue BWV 532 to his wholly original toccata and modernist second sonatina. Especially beautiful are the Elegien and Indianishe Tagebuch, where Tozer's playing is superb. He also gives an very good performance of the Fantasia nach Bach, in an onward driving reading (to those who don't know this work his interpretation provides more interest initially than say Hamelin's slower one, but I feel Hamelin creates more emotion and powerful climaxes). My one critism of his playing is that he plays too gently. One feels he could build up bigger and much more emphatic climaxes, especially in the Bach transcription and the Fantasia nach Bach. Most of the pieces on this CD are beautiful, although be prepared to spend time getting to know them, as at first you may not like them.

The recording quality is unsurpassed, and I recommend this CD highly, both for those unfamiliar, and familiar with Busoni's works.

      5 out of 5 stars A real find.......2001-04-26

This is a terrific recording of some familar and some little-known American composers. The most substantial work in this varied collection is certainly the Argento setting of selections from the diary of Virginia Woolf. Mary Ann Hart must be just about the ideal interpretter of these powerful songs. Great vocalism, great musicianship, and a special ability to do what the music demands without short-changing the words - which is essential to the success of this cycle. The entire CD - while varied both stylistically an in terms of the quality of compositions - is consistent in the brilliance of the performances and in the appeal of these songs. Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in contemporary American art songs, or who just loves great singing.

5 out of 5 stars technical expertise plus warmth and humanity.......1999-07-07

Fans of high-powered piano playing would do well to check out "Geoffrey Dorfman, pianist," a new recital disc in which the pianist plays one of the late, great Beethoven sonatas and show his chops with works by twentieth-century composers/virtuosos Sergei Rachmaninov and Ferruccio Busoni. The program gets off to a good start with Busoni's rarely heard "Indian Diary" - four microscopic tone poems depicting life among Native Americans. From the hopping rhythms and cascading scales of the "Corn Blossom Song" to the tender longings of "the Bluebird Song", Dorfman shows technical expertise while bringing out the warmth and humanity in Busoni's complex music. Rachmaninov was one of the last great pianist/composers. Here he is represented by a selection of preludes - most notably the sonorous no.10 in b minor and the delicate and refined no. 5 in G major. Although Dorfman seems less comfortable playing the Rachmaninov-the music doesn't flow as naturally from his fingers as it does elsewhere on the set - these are noble performances. Finally, Dorfman tackles one of Beethoven's notoriously difficult late sonatas, his 109 in E Major. The two tight, densely constructed movements whiz by, with Dorfman doing his best to prove the relationship between this oddly shaped sonata and Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier." In the final movement, a long set of variations, Dorfman plays with lyricism, grace, and a sense of form. All in all, an impressive recording from a pianist worth investigating. Paul J. Pelkonen, Classical Editor newyorkcitysearch.com/september 1998

        5 out of 5 stars authoritative playing.......1999-07-07

Although Geoffrey Dorfman had taken piano lessons as a child, he had a substantial career as a painter before he returned, a decade ago at the age of 37, to a serious study of the instrument. But you'd never guess, from these performances that he was more or less a latecomer: this is authoritative playing, both technically assured (nothing on this challenging program seems to strain his fingers) and interpretively individual. What's most notable is his chiseled clarity. Although he's apt to employ the kind of generous rubato usually associated with a rich sound, he's sparing of the pedal and chary of legato, producing dry and sharply articulated readings that fasten on the music's rhythmic details and textural balances (try the play of voices in Rachmaninov's op.23/6) rather than its timbres and harmonic colorations. Thus, for instance, in the snappy reading of the second movement of the Beethoven, his left hand provides clarity and definition rather than weight; and while he's surely sensitive to the impressionistic qualities in the last movement of Busoni's Indian Diary and to the sparkle of the second variation in the finale of the Beethoven, he sometimes contracts the music's dynamic range in pursuit of vertical clarity. This approach has the most striking consequences in the Bach-Busoni Chaconne: eschewing the full, organlike sonority preferred by so many pianists, Dorfman chips away at the music, providing a spiky surface that lays bare the music's inticate contrapuntal workings. Except for some overload, the sound is good: and the pianist's sometimes bizarre liner notes are not a serious detriment. Well worth your attention. Peter J. For the record, The Flesh Eaters rock, and so does this album. So why three stars? Well a lot of the songs are kind of forgettable. Some just repeat themselves for four minutes. On the other hand, there are some awesome Flesh Eaters classics on here. 'Better Tomorrow','Love You So, Eyes Of Lightning', and 'Kill, Baby, Kill' in particular. So if you are a flesh eaters fan I think you'll dig this album.
