Rent is usually treated as Jonathan Larson's one and only show, but the truth is that he had a career--albeit a hitless one--before that blockbuster. There was a musical titled JP Morgan Saves the Nation with lyrics by Jeffrey M. Jones and music by Larson. And there was Tick, Tick... Boom!, an autobiographical piece that Larson workshopped for a while before setting it aside and finishing Rent.
In 2001, Tick, Tick is getting a full off-Broadway production, and it's a rather endearing one. Lyrics have never been Larson's strong point, but he was a hell of a melodic composer--and the score here is even poppier than that of Rent (think Top 40 rather than Sondheim). It's hard to pick favorite songs: "Green Green Dress" is built on a rollicking piano boogie, for instance, and "Real Life" and "See Her Smile" are the kind of elegiac ballad that Larson would later perfect with "Seasons of Love." Luckily, this show has a lot more to offer than mere youthful musings. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
A Vocally Dazzling Esparza Rides High on an Exuberant Pre-"Rent" Larson Score.......2007-06-16
Perhaps it's a coincidence that the immensely talented Raúl Esparza plays a character dreading his 30th birthday in this 2001 recording of the hit off-Broadway show by the late Jonathan Larson, while five years later, he would play the elliptical Bobby dreading his 35th birthday in the enthralling 2006 Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Company. In both performances, Esparza shows a true affinity for capturing the angst of men undergoing transitional points in their lives which render them emotionally paralyzed. At first glance, Sondheim and Larson would not seem like kindred spirits, but both share a gift for sophisticated lyrics in an unmistakable musical style defined by their oeuvres. Larson even pays tribute to Sondheim in the story's climax and with the sardonic, work-is-hell "Sunday", a take-off of the song with the same name in Sunday in the Park with George.
However, it is the familiar Larson sound of Rent that is heard most in this score - driving, rock-out rhythms with unavoidable pop hooks and yearning, piano-driven ballads. Even the opener, "30/90", is a virtual sound-alike of the bigger show's title tune. If the songs are not quite as polished or even memorable as those in Rent, they feel more personal because the autobiographical story is far more intimate in scale. Set in 1990 in the same SoHo neighborhood as Rent, it's a simple three-character piece about Jon, an aspiring composer who considers giving up his dreams on the verge of his 30th birthday. With charismatic fire, Esparza is equally adept using his beautifully expressive voice in a rock milieu as in a Sondheim character study. He brings energetic brio to finger-snapping rockers like the Twinkie-induced "Sugar" and especially shines on the ballads, "See Her Smile" and the revelatory "Why".
With a slightly pinched voice that reminds me a bit of the Bangles' Susanna Hoffs, Amy Spanger as girlfriend Susan duets nicely with Esparza on the touching "Johnny Can't Decide", the rocking "Green Green Dress", and the comical self-help wordplay of "Therapy". Her shining solo moment comes with the knockout ballad, "Come to Your Senses". As Jon's embattled pal Michael, Jerry Dixon provides powerful vocals, bringing particular warmth to "Real Life" and grit to the fed-up rave "No More". The trio closes the show powerfully with the anthem-like "Louder Than Words". The overall score is a bit derivative and a tad too earnest, but the youthful zest of the cast and Larson's pop craftsmanship more than compensate. Two bonus tracks are offered at the end - an instrumental replay of the opener, "30/90 Playout" and a rare recording of Larson singing "Boho Days" a capella with propulsive hand claps.
Great tunes - great lyrics - great harmonies.......2006-11-04
If you are a fan of the late great Mr. Larson you will love this music. Okay, I have seen the play a couple of times so I know what happens between the songs but this, his autobiography, really moved me. Even my kids like the Green Dress Song.
I hope you like it... The theme is "Actions Speak Louder Than Words" rings true today as the day he wrote it.
John we miss you.
Love the Music.......2006-08-22
I saw this play a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed the music, so I got the CD. The voices, and lyrics are amazing! However, as I often find with CDs of musicals, there wasn't always the right feeling in the voice, particularly in "Therapy" where couple ought to be angry at each other, and it seems more cute on the CD.
Larson Lives.......2006-05-06
I love Tick, Tick... Boom! The show is quite refreshing. The show works so well with three actors. I LOVE "30/90" and "Louder Than Words." Both speak really strongly to the audience because they both are really relatable to anyone's life. Admittedly the middle of the show drags a little, and Spangler's voice can be chipmunkish at times. However those are minor detractions when it comes to this show. It is especially moving if you know Jonathan's story. It is no Rent, but the short piece is really moving
Fantastic Music, but i wouldnt want to see it live.......2006-04-30
I was soo soo very pleased with the music from "Tick...Tick..BOOM!". Rock Operas are my favorite type of musical theatre, and i must say this is one of the best. The storyline, however, although dealing with bohemian problems like AIDS, rehersals, love, didnt meet the power of the music. It was taken from Johnathans original one-man show and made into a three-man show. This was the only way possible to make this conversion, but still it was a dull storyline only going over the time period of one day in the day in the life of Johnathan Larson. Yes, it was an important day, his thirtieth birthday and his friend annoucing that he is HIV positive, but none of this happens until the end. The show lacks obsession, and in order to make a good musical storyline there has to be an obsession. Luckily, the weak storyline is backed with fantastic music, perhaps even better than Rent. 30/90 is my all time favorite song EVER i have listened to it over and over and still am not sick of it. other favorite tracks include:
30/90
Green Green Dress
No More
Sugar
Come To Your Senses (originally from Superbia)
Louder Than Words
and i also enjoy the rest of the songs as well.

For his third collaboration with director Sam Mendes (after American Beauty and The Shawshank Redemption), composer Thomas Newman has come up with one of his finest scores. The music mixes modern atmospheric quasi-rock touches with Middle Eastern influences (with particularly great success on the tracks "Welcome to the Suck" and "Zoomies."). The latter manifest themselves in both the beats and the instrumentation--the credits include soloists on exotic instruments such as the bowed cumbus (a type of banjo-like lute) and the processed xaphoons (a sax made of bamboo). All the more jarring, then, when the CD's handful of songs pop up. (It's quite a jolt to hear Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" after four eerie instrumental tracks.) The other song picks are obvious but well chosen: T-Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," "Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P.," Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," and Tom Waits's "Soldier's Things." Still, it's Newman's work that propels this CD, not the pick-up songs. Surprisingly, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," which figures in one of the movie's most memorable scenes (when soldiers watch Apocalypse Now), isn't included here. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
You fools!.......2006-10-27
I am reading all the negative reviews of this soundtrack, and most of them mention the absence of Kanye West's "Jesus Walks." One reviewer gives the album one star because he was "misled" into buying the album.
Um, hello? This is an instrumental score for the film! NOT a Various Artists soundtrack! This is, you may have noticed, an album that falls under the name of Thomas Newman! If anyone bought this expecting other music, then it's entirely their own fault. It even says on the front: "MUSIC BY THOMAS NEWMAN."
That said, I'd also like to correct Amazon on something - they said this is Newman's third outing with Mendes, the other two being "Shawshank Redemption" and "American Beauty."
Shawshank was directed by Frank Darabont, NOT Sam Mendes.
Mendes' other pairing with Newman was actually on 2002's "Road to Perdition," which is another great soundtrack I'd heartily recommend purchasing.
Missing Theme Song - but otherwise not bad.......2006-03-01
If you've watched the previews for this film, you're likely expecting a song called Jesus Walks by Kanye West to be on the soundtrack but it's not there - very annoying. But otherwise it's a pretty good CD of music to listen to while you work out or drive fast.
Fine score, but a consumer warning for the CD.......2006-01-20
Thomas Newman's original music for JARHEAD is not only typically daring with many unconventional sounds (utilizing samples, electronic treatments and exotic percussion), but one of his most stirring, rock-influenced efforts as well (as with the opening track, "Welcome to the Suck"). At first I thought there were no melodies as memorable as "Dead Already" from AMERICAN BEAUTY or "Road to Chicago" from ROAD TO PERDITION, but the 3/4-time march used in both "Raining Oil" and "Desert Storm" has grown on me. Of course the CD is recommendable for Newman's score alone. But...
...while one doesn't buy a CD of this nature primarily for the extra songs, one does expect the extras to be competently presented when they appear. So I was taken aback to hear Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" at a faster tempo and higher pitch than usual, as though mastered from a sped-up tape. I can't think of any intentional reason for this, so I'm assuming it was a mistake, but either way I found it not only annoying in itself but because of "Fight the Power"'s thematic significance, with its reference to the Bobby McFerrin tune heard earlier in the movie. ("'Don't Worry Be Happy' was a number one jam/Damn if I say it you can slap me right here".)
So then, while I like the Thomas Newman score a lot, I'm docking the CD a star for the sped-up "Fight the Power". Caveat emptor.
Thomas Newman is a Genius!.......2006-01-07
Thomas Newman is brilliant as always and delivers beautifully. Having read the book prior to the motion picture, Thomas Newman truly brings Swofford's tale to life. If you enjoyed The Horse Whisperer or the Shawshank Redemption score, then you'll thoroughly enjoy Jarhead.
Almost perfect for the film, loses points as a cd.......2005-12-23
Make no mistake - Jarhead proves Thomas Newman's abillity to write music for film. He is not making the music in order to show off his amazing talents, he is making the music so it is perfect for the film. Whereas some composers might score depressing scenes with grand sweeping movements trying to make themselves look like complex composers, Newman knows what will enhance the scene and what won't, and what can convey the message required.
Ultimately, this describes Jarhead perfectly. I have seen the movie and music is seamless and perfect for it. For the most part, there is a sonic texture created, with guitars and drums to represent the bravado of the characters. If you are a fan of Newman's stirring orchestral works this is definitely not something you would like. Newer fans of "American Beauty" and the like will find things to enjoy here, but not in as vibrant or pleasing a way as in that album. The score on it's own is just not as exciting or involving as it could be. It is interesting in it's own right, but not very pleasing to hear. However, there are many good tracks interspersed throughout the score to take you to the good spot.
Overall, Jarhead warrants a 4.5/5 for the film, but on a cd, it's score drops to 3/5. It is pleasant at times, and mostly an interesting CD, but there are too many Newman masterpieces to consider this one high on your buying list. Then agan, if you are a Newman fan, this CD should satisfy you're urge to see what the guy is up to. Final score? Three out of five.

~Best Companion for Soul Searching~.......2006-02-17
I fell in love with this band due to "If Lucy Fell" as well! The lyrics are so poignant and original that I couldn't help but listen and relate. In addition, Kravat's voice is not unlike fresh, crystal clear water that flows uninhibited into your ears as well as your heart! This is one of those rare albums that you can put in and listen through every track non-stop. Anyone considering purchasing this item should do so immediatly... it is a decision that you will not regret!*****
ART WITH HEART...MUSIC WITH A MESSAGE.......1998-08-24
I have loved marry me jane since I saw the film "If Lucy Fell". The entire soundtrack (and then some) is available on marry me jane's self titled first album.
Tick is yet another lyrical masterpice for the band. It deals with subjects as serious as abortion and child abuse, but in a very non-threatening, matter-of-fact way.
A powerful cd any way you look at it!
A great album...all it needs is listeners..........1998-07-05
Marry Me Jane is yet another unheard of group that makes terrific music. Tick has quite a wide variety of music from soft hits like "Might As Well Be Mine" to harder stuff like "Shaking the River." Amanda Kravatt provides solid lead vocals that are not some Sheryl Crow or other main stream female singer rip-off. Her style and sound are unique, and the flavor of the music is different from main stream pop style. This album is an enjoyable music experience, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys great music.

Another (beautiful) vision of Billy Pilgrim's.......2007-01-03
I was always a little fascinated by Slaughterhouse-Five's principal. Although I have been reading and re-reading the book for over thirty years, I cannot recall these lines from the story, although they certainly are a part of it. To have it read by the author, accompanied as it is by such sweet Paris-style jazz is a treat.
Tock Tick - Beyond Words.......2003-08-08
I found this single to be an amazing spoken/rythmic blend. It's as if Vonnegut's words are completed by the music, merging into it and becoming a single entity. The music is emotive and pulls in the listener. I didn't think a spoken word recording could do this. I've always loved Vonnegut's work but never experienced it like this. I want more!!
MUSIC FAN & KV FAN.......2003-08-07
I bought this CD SINGLE online...I had it almost overnight and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. The CD is only a single but the track is 7 minutes of captivating, beautiful, hypnotic music.
There was also the fact that Kurt Vonnegut's artwork is on the cover that made me want to buy it. I read somewhere(maybe on the co's website...that this CD was a limited edition and that there were also copies available that are signed by KV. Also, I have a feeling that this single may be part of a series featuring Kurt Vonnegut, and will be a KV collector's item someday. I haven't heard that other Kurt Vonnegut CD that is available, but this one seemed out-of the- ordinary, and unique.

Unpolished, Hearty Concert Tour.......2004-11-15
This two cd set provides a hefty, and welcome introduction for any beginning Buck Tick fan. It begins with a directionless percussion noise track, a signature for the band, and hardly withstandable except that it preludes the actual concert. Much like a jarring overture - thankfully, there's better stuff on the album. The first true song, Glamorous, opens amid the enthusiastic screaming of fans, allowing for an exillirating shift from the obnoxious opening.
From that beginning, the cd only works upwards. A montage of tone styles adds to this collection. Some are simple, romantic ballads, such as "Flame". The errie "Sapphire" pinnacles the more ambient works, with a chorus that sounds as though it's coming from behind a veil. Harder electronic follows in "Down". Most songs showcase the vocalist, Atsushi Sakurai, a man whose sonorous, passionate voice and wide vocal range has earned him cult icon status in his homeland.
The other members should not be ignored either, and perhaps the second most distinctive band member would be guitarist Hisashi Imai. Identified by his boyish looks and a tatoo of the band's name under his left eye (or is that just makeup?), Imai serves a fair, chaste compliment to Sakurai's mature, androgynous sex appeal. Then again, everything looks chaste compared to Atsushi Sakurai. Probably even Prince. Hisashi contributes heavily to the band's industrial sound, especially in background noises.
Even if you don't understand Japanese, you'll find yourself singing along, screaming with the fans, or laughing from sheer excitment at Buck Tick's crowd pleasing antics. Sakurai, a genius at crowd manipulation, invites his fans to join the band, by turning the microphone to them on chorus lines of Uta. Hidehiko writes more of the mainstream appeal songs (e.g. ballads, such).
The group draws both from Japanese and Western pop of the 70's and 80's. David Bowie, Brian Eno, the Who, and Soft Ballet are only a few influences.
This album is a treat, especially for fans who can't afford to travel to Japan and see these concerts for themselves.

A quarter-century or so after achieving his highest profile as frontman for L.A.'s Dream Syndicate, Steve Wynn continues to show that there's life beyond the Paisley Underground. His recent work represents the best music of his career, as he forges a vibrant fusion of hardcore punk (the opening "Wired" has the raw intensity of the Stooges) with the hard-boiled literary strains evoked by his lyrics. "Cindy, It Was Always You" even finds him collaborating with master crime novelist (and longtime Wynn fan) George Pelecanos, for a song with the sort of unreliable narrator that suggests Randy Newman fronting a garage band. Life's lessons and classic craftsmanship both inform "Turning of the Tide" and "Bruises," with the expansively majestic "The Deep End" providing the CD with a seven-minute centerpiece. Wynn's music has long owed a debt to the Velvet Underground and Neil Young's Crazy Horse, and with music this ambitious and assured, the debt has been well repaid. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Steve Wynn deserves your money.......2006-12-20
If I was younger, single and childless, I would backpack through Europe following this amazing band from one smoke filled club to the next. Why this man is not a household name is an eternal mystery to those of us whose lives and impaired hearing owe a great debt to Steve.
Buy this record, then buy them all, including his Dream Syndicate albums.
As usual.......2006-10-21
Steve Wynn Takes us further than we expect.
Just when you start to listen and relax into the groove you begin to realize "this is just like any other Steve Wynn collection" and you are going to spend years with it gnarling, snuggling, grooving, and quarreling.
Only, this one is the finest of the miracle 3 enmeshed.
It is a beautiful thing!
Wow.....................2006-08-22
that about sums this album up. Killer song after killer song. If you are a fan of Steve Wynn, you won't be disappointed. Definitely his best since the Dream Syndicate days. Buy it!
Yet another miracle from Wynn.......2006-02-11
If you're in the market for Televison-like guitar duels and top-notch songwriting to boot, then head out and pick this one up pronto. It's the third straight masterpiece from Steve Wynn. This one harkens back to the early Dream Syndicate sound more so than any other Wynn solo lps, which is a good thing. Both Wynn and lead guitarist Jason Victor have developed a chemisrty akin to Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd. Wynn's songwriting skills continue to amaze, even after a nearly 25 year career. Few of his Paisley peers can lay claim to that distinction. Although many may compare Wynn and his mates to Crazy Horse (check them out live and you'll really find out why). Young and Co. haven't made anything nearly this good in almost 30 years. Put down that british post-punk revival crap and reconnect to the rock.
ANOTHER FINE DISH.......2006-01-31
Steve Wynn has done it again with another great offering of songs that completes his Arizona trilogy. I am still amazed how he keeps churning out one fine tune after another. In this release, I get the idea of one continous album with one chestnut just sliding into another..
A couple of high end rockers with "Killing Me" & "Wild Mercury" sets Jason Victor free with his nuts off the walls leads as they just bang out these tunes...most of the tunes seem to be drifting towards pure vintage as Steve, again, hands us a large handful of songs that have already, in its short life, become classics...all I can say is 'thanks'.
Steve has worked a little under radar and I can't ever understand why. His music is dead on and stripped of all plastics. Support honest music and buy this...your tappin' feet will thank you...
