In 1939, Billie Holiday recorded "Strange Fruit," a chilling protest song about lynching. The Crescent City trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, who co-leads the sizzling Latin jazz group, Los Hombres Calientes, transforms that legendary song into a nine-movement jazz oratorio with the 17-piece New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, the Dillard University Choir, and narrator Wendell Pierce of HBO's The Wire. The work is reminiscent of Wynton Marsalis's Blood on the Fields and All Rise, and the storyline features a doomed interracial romance in 1920's Louisiana. Mayfield possesses a sturdy sound that swoons and swoops throughout the jazz tradition, which encompasses the joyful, second line syncopations of "The Elder Negro Speaks," the down-home, spiritual backbeats of "The Prayer/Final Words," and the Afro-Caribbean cadences of "The Lynch Mob (You Better Run Boy Run)." Mayfield's revelatory riff on this jazz classic exudes with visionary vitality and profound pathos. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Album Description

Joining the ranks of People Under The Stairs, Colossus, J Boogie's Dubtronic Science, DJ Mark Farina's "Mushroom Jazz", and more, Om's roster of forward thinking hip-hop continues to grow. Myone, Myth, and Symbolyc (S1) are Strange Fruit Project; three emcees who continue to set trends as not your typical southern hip-hop group. Each member sings, raps, and is influenced by the constant journey of everyday life. Through innovative production and creative lyrics, their music separates them from many independent artists.

5 out of 5 stars The Healing of Hip Hop- A album to relax too.......2007-07-06

This is a excellent effort from southern rappers in a world of snap, crunk, and pimp music! A southern artist myself and into the more thoughtful hip hop, i knew i would love this CD. It reminds me of a common/LB LP. The beats are wonderfully soulful, and so are the lyrics (wow). If you are a true hip hop fan buy this album, relax, and bump it!

5 out of 5 stars Talented and Refreshing.......2007-04-20

This is a very talented group of young MC's. The music is mellow and it has an all around "Good Feeling" to it. This album can be enjoyed by all.

5 out of 5 stars IntelliHop!.......2007-04-14

Really made their mark with this installment "The Healing". Lyrics courageous enough to really speak to our condition with cleaver tracks, stimulating instrumentation and flow sychronized rhymes. They trully demonstrate they understand the importance of timing when delivering the verse. Outstanding production and collabo's including Badu who is always a welcome addition to any conscious track as well as, underground's trio Little Brother who have definately shown their devotion to the underground. All the tracks on this joint have a message you should be able to relate to.

It is a collector's item for those who focus on this love life music. This one if for the PEOPLE.

GO GET IT!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Dirty South? {4 Stars}.......2007-03-14

If Little Brother were still interesting, not full of themselves, or taking themselves so seriously, they'd sound like Strange Fruit Project. I know I'll get a lot of unhelpfuls for that statement, but I think S1, Myth, and Myone have similar rhyme styles to LB, but with more speed and fluidity and less dependence on metaphors and similies. You can witness the similarities and the differences on "Rise" which features Little Brother. Not only do they spit like no other rapper I've ever heard out of Texas, but the production is on point as well. S1 raps, but he also (excellently) produces 5 of the 14 tracks with 9th Wonder (1), the underrated Illmind (3), Nicolay (1), M-Phazes (1), the constantly overlooked Jake One (1), The Foundation, and Vitamin D holding down the rest of the production. I have to say that the beats are definitely what you'd expect from that lineup.

As far as flaws go, there really aren't many. Maybe one or two tracks are what I would label as skip material (Liberation & Pinball). They just didn't grab the ears of this particular listener, but if you dig that smooth stuff, then you should be able to play this one from start to finish.

The Healing is easily one of the top 15 hip hop releases of 2006. S1, Myth, and Myone are some of the dopest rappers I've ever heard to come out of the lone star state. To be honest, I never knew Texas had it in 'em. I recommend adding this one to your library.

Standout Tracks: The Plague, Soul Clap, You (The Only Ones) (My Favorite), A Change feat. The Procussins [Bonus Track], Get Live feat. Erykah Badu, Under Pressure, Makin' My Way, and Special feat. Thesis

4 out of 5 stars Good easy listening, slightly experimental.......2007-02-17

This hip hop has a positive religious vibe with the likes of Erykah and soulsters like Darien Brockington and Thesis. I would class it as neo-soul/underground hip hop. Feels as though it has a touch of kindred the family soulness to it which is always good. The beats vary from song to song which gives some variety, there's some new experimentalness there but I always find I can hear new styles in more hardcore and underground hip hop. Overall some wicked collabo's and a bit of heart tingling stuff but nothing to give it the label of being a classic (even though the group are relatively unknown).

If you're looking for Billie in her prime, look elsewhere. All the music on this CD was recorded between '45 and '47 after she had lost her voice. Look for the classic recording of Strange Fruit from '39 on one of the other CDs available.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful........2006-07-04

A great recording with strange fruit absent from so many of her recordings. Why is that? This will appeal to any lover of Billie Holliday and her music. Listen to " strange fruit ".

    5 out of 5 stars "Strange Fruit".......2004-09-14

First off, this album is amazing. It has such soul and rhythm. But what I would really like to tell you about is the song for which this album is named: Strange Fruit.

This is a sensitive subject for many people, especially those whose ancestors suffered. But you can't just deny that it happened. People have to have the courage to realize that horrible things go on in the world. Don't be a coward. Listen. People have to understand. You can't just pretend it didn't happen because you don't want to hear about it or think that your ancestors might have done it.

I first heard this song on "Touched by an Angel". It made me want to cry, to scream. A Jewish teacher wrote this song as a poem and gave it to Billie Holiday. She was so touched by it that she had music written for it and decided to sing it. It was a very touchy subject so at first no one clapped, no one dared to make a sound. But finally there was a lone clap somewhere in the audience and suddenly there was a thunderous ovation.

I greatly admire both the teacher and Holiday for having the courage to stand up in defiance of the horrors. The teacher's words penetrate, cutting deep. They don't beg you to listen, they command you.

Some may think that this subject doesn't involve because, hell, they weren't there, they didn't participate. But they are wrong. This is about what people just like you and me allowed, even encouraged to happen.

This isn't just a song about death. It's about the ignorance, the hate, the lives, the souls, the people.

    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2003-06-21

I am a JAMC fan and think this album is absolutely great. I believe it clearly captures the magic of the band. And the capital of Nebraska is Lincoln.

3 out of 5 stars Reasonably exciting live tracks, absolutely no surprises.......2001-09-21

All of these 21 live tunes are unreleased. However, the actual songs were released on the 'Psychocandy' and 'Darklands' CDs. If you're looking for new songs, you'll find mostly covers here. (The JAMC were never good at acoustic covers, so even kangaroos can guess what 'My Girl' sounds like). Most of the tunes have the same straight-to-tape sound of the original CDs, except sloppier. Some intense tracks really do terrify (In a Hole, Taste The Floor, Some Candy Talking), I found the rest to be nothing we haven't heard already. OK, but hardly great.

4 out of 5 stars Brings ya back.......2000-04-27

A good reminder for all who've forgotten what a genius band the JAMC was. The first several track are very early, pre-Psychocandy noise hysteria, but the real revelation is hearing stripped-down acoustic versions of the songs on that album. They're almost more wonderful without all the feedback--pristine, melodic songs whose delicate music runs against their nihilistic lyrics. Things get a bit lame later in the disc with some of the JAMC's less distinguished later tracks, but the acoustic version of "My Girl" is killer.

5 out of 5 stars This is probably my favorite SLITS record.......2006-03-06

Most bands don't do much unique on Peel shows from what my ears have heard. Typically they're just recreating what they did in the studio for their records.

That's not the case w/ the SLITS. When I heard this record it took me places musically that the SLITS had never been before, certainly as a complete record.

The Cut first album is quite something. Course, that's assuming yer into the sound these gals made. It's not your usual stuff, punk or otherwise. Sure, they existed right in the fermament of the late 70's punk scene. But they carved out a musical place that is still only theirs.

This is an invaluable release because the SLITS released so few records. I'd recommend it in a heart beat, though I'd caution you to listen to those amazon 'listen' buttons first cuz this is not automatically going to be the group you just dig. We gotta find out if yer adventrous musically or not first. If you can get into their groove, man, they did some hot stuff and here's where they really get into it most. chrisbct@hotmail.com

This may be perhaps the worst punk cd put out by a group of crazed women obsessed with the popularity of bands like the Sex Pistols, and the Clash. These chicks were amateurs when it came to playing their instruments, damn they even had to have Mick Jones from the Clash tune their instruments for them when they were on tour together. Sorry ladies just because you have the heart, and the enthusisam does not mean that the talent portion will fall in. This time you came up short. Instead try checking out X ray Spex, or the Avengers, or Patti Smiths first album Horses if your into the whole female empowerment punk rock group. POSEURS.

    Album Description

As Sting expanded past The Police into his solo career and further still with young jazz musicians Brandford Marsalis and Kenny Kirkland, he encountered the venerable Gil Evans who had embraced rock in the past with his big band recordings of Jimi Hendrix tunes. These live recordings from Perugia, Italy in 1987 (plus one earlier Evans recording from 1976) fuse the work of the two principles accompanied by sidemen of reknown. This night included Hendrix ("Little Wing") and Sting pieces ("Tea in the Sahara", "Consider Me Gone") in addition to Billy Holiday's classic "Strange Fruit".

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Strange incomplete release of the landmark Sting/Gil Evans Italian collaboration.......2006-09-17

Though you can't tell from the poorly-selected samples included here, the Gil Evans band does indeed actually play on this CD, sometimes in a full force wall of complex voicings (though the full horn section is usually used sparingly -- after all, how much time could Gil Evans have had to write the arrangements for this one-night stand?). Also, tracks 3, 6 and 9 don't involve Sting at all, being from a completely different Gil Evans live performance (in Belgrade) eleven years earlier!

The Sting/Gil Evans tracks are from a live performance in Italy from 1987. Though I don't have my original copy of that performance accessible to me now, I know that there were other songs from that performance that are not included here, in particular an oddly exciting version of "Roxanne" where Sting seems to enter in the wrong key but which by the end has a hugely wailing wall of horns over the rocking finale. I believe there were also performances of "Shadows in the Rain" and "Synchronicity I" which are not included here. Ironically, these are some of the highest-energy songs of the evening, and they're all missing from this CD.

So while the performance is a strong four stars, the incompleteness of this release tempers my rating slightly. If you are a Sting fan and have no copy of this material at all, you probably should own it, incomplete as this version is. It was an unusual night, as Sting was a great admirer of Gil Evans, who died the year after this concert took place. The performance feels like perhaps there was not too much rehearsal (and we know how Sting loves to rehearse), but all concerned jumped in fearlessly, creating a rather adrenalin-filled night to remember. There's a high-energy vulnerability to Sting's singing on the concert, and the edgily dissonant sound of Gil Evans' charts and band bring a frenzied nobility to the proceedings.

If possible, you should probably hold out for the original release of this Gil Evans Sting material (with all the additional songs). It is called "Last Session" and, as of the time I'm typing this, appears at Amazon here:

    [...]

I believe that "Last Session" was a bootleg, and I'm sort of assuming "Strange Fruit" is too, which is no reason why you shouldn't either one. I'm sure Sting won't mind. ;)

4 out of 5 stars Classic Early Ants ranks right up there with Dirk..........2006-04-21

Finally the BBC has properly issued the complete BBC sessions by Adam and The Ants. Tracks four through twelve were previously with cool artwork issued in 1991 but ommitted the pseudo-offensive "Deutscher Girls" (containing the line "why did you have to be so Natzi?" - hardly promoting Natzis) and "Puerto-Rican" a great song with tounge-in cheek lyrics (irony is seemingly often misunderstood by Americans). The versions of these songs are interesting early versions of songs that were later released either on Dirk Wears White Sox or as A-Sides or B-Sides (or sometimes not at all).

The version of "Zerox" here is incredible (although the single/album version remains the definitive version). It sounds like Kraftwerk playing an angular punk rock song. Terrific!
The versions of "Tabletalk" (with its great "love love love" guitar line), "Animals And Men" (played here twice as fast as the Dirk version) and "Ligotage" (which is French for "Bondage") are all fantastic slices of brooding angular Dirk-era atonal punk.

"It Doesn't Matter" is a fun little song that the band re-recorded during the Vive Le Rock sessions (but in that version they left out the "you smell" punchline). "Lou" -a song about Lou Reed - is pretty much ruined by Jordan's screaming throughout it.
"Cleopatra" is done a tad too slow here and the version of "You're So Physical" here is pretty similar to the Do-It version.
Jumping from '79 to '95 the acoustic versions of "Wonderful" and "Gotta Be A Sin" are pretty ace. The version of "Antmusic" is pretty funny Ant sounds like he's having fun.

A worthwhile and necessary purchase for any Ant fan.

4 out of 5 stars Early Ants Stand And Deliver!.......2004-01-11

Most of this disc was released as 'The Peel Sessions' about a decade ago, but this superior version also has two additional early tracks: 'Puerto Rican' and another version of 'Deutcher Girls', as well as three acoustic tracks from 1995. This is a must for anyone interested in Adam's punk roots or punk music in general. A lot of early Ants classics are here: '(You're So) Physical', 'Zerox', 'Never Trust A MAn With Egg On His Face', etc, just that they're different versions- some are slightly slowed down and some are slightly faster than the originals. Forgotten track 'Puerto Rican' finally makes it onto an Ants album, and then there's 'Lou' and 'Ligotage' as well which ended up on the UK Antbox box set from 2000. All classic punk/Ants material which you NEED! Great material, play loud. At the end of the disc is three acoustic cuts from 1995 which are slightly out of place amid these early John Peel sessions from the late 70's, but are a welcome addition. Of these, included is a gorgeous 'Wonderful' as well as a drum-free acoustic version of 'Antmusic' which is stripped down almost into a campfire singalong. These were just Adam and Marco, i believe. The rest of the disc is the original Ants. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars WOW WOW WOW!.......2003-11-13

What an unbelievebly great cd. I am a fairly new Adam Ant fan. I only discovered him about a year ago. I knew about Goody Two Shoes and all that (which is a great song of course) but I had NO IDEA how talented he really is. If you like punk and want to hear something different- buy it! It's really too bad that the Ants are never brought up when talking about the early punk era. Its always the Ramones, the Clash, the Sex Pistols ect. But the Ants were up at the top of early, influencial punk bands. Please please please- buy this cd. You wont regret it. And the lkast three songs are great too. Ant Music, Wonderful and Gotta Be A Sin (that LUCKY Heather Graham!!!!) were all recorded acoustically and they are grogeous. I LOVE YOU ADAM!!

5 out of 5 stars too bad the rating only goes to 5!.......2003-07-09

I cant say enough about this cd. You MUST own this!!!!!!!! I recieved it a week ago and I've pretty much listened to it nonstop. I'll admit I am an Ant Freak. I love Adam Ant. I think Marco Pirroni is unreal. If you like early punk, you'll LOVE this. These are some of the Ants BEST songs on one cd. Something that is hard to come by for Americans. We weren't blessed with Antbox like the UK was. And these songs are live recordings so you can hear how talented the Ants really were. And a higlight is the acoustic versions of Wonderful, Antmusic (NO drums at all and it just sounds terrific...he recorded this version in 1996 and he sounded better then ever) and Gotta Be a Sin. You really HAVE to buy this cd!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Criminally overlooked in the US...This is great stuff!!!.......2001-08-13

What a shame that Adam Ant is only known by many for his hit single "Goody Two Shoes". Adam and the Ants have a hard edge to their music that transcends the term "new wave". Fantastic melodies, the excellent hard rock guitar sounds from Marco, Adam's always excellent vocals make this CD more than just an interesting curiosity. I can't recommend any CD I've heard lately as much as this. This CD has a raw edge that enhances the already classic material included. The acoustic version of Adam's last hit "Wonderful" is just that.

5 out of 5 stars Essential and amazing!.......2003-11-04

I was expecting this to be a disc collectors would only be interested in, however the versions on this disc are amazing! This disc puts much more electro into the more produced versions that appeared on their debut disc. I actually prefer these versions to the album versions. The last (audio) cut, "Where was Your Heart.." is a radical reworking of the version that appeared on their (then) last studio album. The two video tracks from the Old Grey Whistle Test are also quite good. This is more then a collectors item. This is essential! I'd love to hear any other versions they did with this type of treatment!

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2002-04-16

Give Darkness and Man-Erg a pass, the rest of the tunes on this disc are nothing short of brilliant! It was with the second phase of this band's history that they really found their own sound. Each of these tunes from that era (Godbluff, Still Life) are incredible "live in the studio" performances that differ enough from the originals to make this recording a must have for fans of this era. Sound quality is frankly, perfect. The band is in equally top form. Highly recommended...Simon

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful record. It covers almost everything they made........1999-11-01

Live recording at the BBC without applauses or anything from the audience. Excellent performance and sound quality. Covers almost all of their carreer. A good introduction to an addictive prog band.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling document from the Golden age of Progressive Music.......1998-09-13

Vander Graaf Generator is one of the great unrecognised bands from the time of progressive rock. Called the Golden Age by afficionados the music was characterized by a literacy hitherto unknown in modern music. Foremost to the music of that time is the instumentation, imagery and when played live, eclecticism. Van der Graaf, fronted by Peter Hammil was most effective when presented live. Decidedly uncommercial they plumbed the depths of their emotional and musical skills to provide us with these tracks. Recorded in the timeless pristine fashion of the BBC (where the placement of a microphone matters) Hammil provokes us with his powerful emotional vocals. The band, flays us with with musical invention completely inappropriate for a pop band but amazingly effective using influences from Eddie Harris (electric saxophone) to Coltrane to Hendrix all with an orchestral bent. Highlights include the haunting "Still Life" and the mad maelstrom of "Man Erg".

Of the BBC recordings released in the wake of the CD, only the recording by Family Live at the Paris Theatre comes close to "Maida Vale". I highly recommend this recording for any real fan of progressive music from the Seventies.
